Don't know if a universal usb charger will work and if so, we still need the cable. Any thoughts?
you would have to get a USB3 Car Charger which I have no idea if it exists yet
Try a power inverter they aren't terribly expensive on amazon.

HEHEHE This just made me realize that I will get to use the plug in my rear seat for the built in inverter in my Dodge !!! The only reason I can think of wanting a USB3 charger is if I find a mounting solution for the inside of the truck...like the in dash stuff being done with the xoom and ipad.
I'm hoping to combine this:

and this:

with some soldering fun to make my own car charging cable.

What you need is something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...17145&creative=399349&creativeASIN=B00144KS6W
Most of the 'universal' chargers out there have USB 2.0 connections.
I plugged my TF into my Nook Color charger (USB 2.0, 1.9A output), but the TF didn't react, so I'm expecting it won't charge the device. Might do it while it's powered off, but definitely not while it's on.
This leads me to the conclusion that the device will require a specific car charger. I don't know exactly how they'll get around the 15V source with a 12V car socket, tho.
While it may suck, an inverter with the regular AC charger may be the best solution. Get a QUALITY inverter, tho.
Anyone else charges their HTC Flyer in the car and, one takes a very long time and secondly if you are using the Flyer at the same time your charging it, it actually discharges. I am using a 2Amp car charger. I have never had a issue with other tablets I have.

Are you using the actual custom tipped charger from HTC or a standard micro USB charger? Only the flyer specific plug charges at full speed.
I charge my evo view with the HTC included cable and it works just fine.

That is wrong. The pin connections are exactly the same as a standard micro-USB but HTC have utilized a more robust housing for the connector as many on XDA and other forums have suffered broken sockets on other devices due to bad insertion of a tiny tip.. I try not to use anything else just for that reason but it's up to you....!
If you look carefully at the tip, it is longer and has a greater barrel contact area than a standard one giving a more secure connection.
I think a more likely reason for the OP's charging problem is that his 2amp power unit is not ACTUALLY delivering 2amps!
Some phone chargers, use a variable pulsed output for current regulation and the Flyer needs a continuous current.
Or it may just be faulty and not supplying enough!

I thought it had more to do with the port on the Flyer having 12 pins (instead of the 5-pin standard for MicroUSB) in order to supply an HDMI output in addition to sync.charge. And also, so that people would not use the Flyer's 1.5 amp charger to charge an HTC or other smartphone (which normally use a 1 amp charger).

In part, that is true, but the extra connections are much further in for HDMI and the connector is longer.
The charger only reaches the standard USB pins.
Also, it does not matter if you put a higher amp charger on any modern unit, so long as the voltage stays the same, all required current is regulated by the internal charging circuitry and is OK.
Example, small 12 volt bulb on car battery only uses what current it needs... Car starter motor.... Not the perfect example but good enough.
Today I tested the same charger without having the Flyer on, and does charge it without any issues. The car charger is a Kingston 2Amp charger. I also have tried using the cable that came with the Flyer and still same results as using a microUSB cable. If Flyer is on it seems not to charge and sometimes actually drops one bar. I like using the Flyer on as I go on the road for GPS, but not liking that it will not charge. I never had this issue with the Samsung Galaxy Tab.
Maybe I can try another charger that has a higher output like maybe 9v?

Absolutely NOT!
The voltage HAS to be 5 volt or you will fry it...
If you have used the charger with the HTC USB cable then it proves it is not supplying 2Amp, this beastie needs that to power and charge simultaneously when fully active GPS, DATA and high screen brightness.
The only solution is to try to find a good charger.
I use the data sync cable with a cigarette to usb adapter.
For fast charging in a car, you must use HTCFlyerCarChargerCC C500(1.67Amp,9V). Else you only will be able to charge the Flyer when its idle.

Totally agree, the HTC dedicated chargers are 9 Volt but if you use any other micro-USB cable or charger it has to be 5 Volt.
They are redily available online, Mobilefun in UK have them, also Amazon.
Be aware, many are advertising standard car chargers for the Flyer, get the official one and save a load of grief.

Actually I think the different tip is because it uses a different voltage to charge it though the AC adaptor (for faster charging) and it's so you don't accidently plug a phone into it and blow the phone

No, actually he's correct in that the HTC charger will fast-charge it while micro USB will not. I don't know how the Flyer can tell the difference between the two, or what the circuitry is, but the HTC Flyer charge clearly reads an output of 9 volts, considerably higher than standard USB, at 5 volts.

Not quite, the adapter requires power so you also need to plug a standard charger into it, plus you need an HDMI cable to go from the adapter to the TV. Frankly for now it's a more cumbersome solution than micro-HDMI as in the previous EVO (& Moto phones), since that was a 1 cable/adapter solution (unless you also wanted to charge the phone)...
In the future TVs will have MHL ports tho and you'll be able to output from phone to TV AND charge off the same MHL/USB-to-MHL/HDMI cable. For now tho, we have to live with the MHL to HDMI adapter with a charger plugged into it. Personally I think HTC & Samsung jumped the gun with this, by the time people have TVs that make MHL a better option than microHDMI we'll already be looking at the next generation of phones (if not the one after that).
P.S. I don't think it's necessary to bump three old threads on the same topic to get an answer to a question that has in fact already been answered on these boards. Just sayin'... Search button works.

That... Doesn't exist. The EVO 3D doesn't even have a microHDMI port, and standard HDMI of any kind doesn't transfer power (that's what MHL is for, to eventually allow a single cable power/video solution, duh).

The Evo 4G uses Micro HDMI. The Evo 3D uses MHL.
They are down to $14.02 on Monoprice now.
ONLY USB power
Is it just me - or using this monoprice adapter makes the phone charge in USB mode and not AC mode (50-90% reduction in charging current?).
I've tried several of my chargers that always report "AC charging" under settings, about phone, battery use (1000mA?)
but as soon as I plug in the monoprice MHL, it drops to "USB charging" (100mA - 500mA)?
I bought two of these Monoprice MHL adapters and both seem to do this. I've tried with four or five different micro-usb AC chargers and one DC cigarette lighter charger... all to the same result.
The result, for me, is that the phone charges at 1/10 the speed of normal - indeed depleting my battery even though it's plugged in to the charger (via the MHL adapter). Even turning my screen brightness all the way down and turning off all non-essential radios... still results in me not being able to watch a full movie before battery dies.
Is it just me or does MHL suck compared to the easy microHDMI of the evo4g?
Yeah it's kinda more cumbersome, eventually when TVs actually support MHL and we don't need these pass thru adapters then it'll be great as it'll be a single cable solution... It was implemented way too early on phones tho.

I can definitely confirm you're limited to USB power using the Monoprice adapter. BUT I'm definitely not losing battery power that fast. In fact, if I'm playing movies off the memory card - I'm still charging the phone. If I stream something while connected, my battery will drain - but nowhere near as bad as you're reporting.
I guess your ability to charge while playing from SD card is to be expected. Radios/streaming take a lot of power.
My normal use-case is 4G streaming netflix, hulu, youtube, hbo go via the MHL/HDMI to a pico projector. And it kills the battery REAL quick even with screen backlight to lowest, bluetooth and wifi off. I'll start experimenting with underclocking undervolting... to find the sweet spot of acceptable fps playback but little enough power to get under that threshold of charge from the adapter.
Anyone recommend a good program to see mA currently being used vs. mA drawn from charger?
Yeah, MHL seems like a great idea - except that not a single TV or device provides it. To me, seems a bad / annoying decision like providing USB5 in 2011... sure it's a cool technology - but isn't the point to be able to interface with EXISTING infrastructure? Annoying also that we NEED to plug in charger to use it.
Hello,
I have purchased the HTC Bluetooth Music Adapter from Sprint (also known as the HTC Car StereoClip): http://shop.htcpedia.com/htc-car-stereoclip-audio-bridge-a100.html
I've been using it for about a week now, and the battery has completely depleted for the first time. I noticed that I am not able to charge it using a vehicle power charger . I used the included USB cable, and it charges just fine with several different wall chargers I have lying around. It charges fine from a PC or laptop USB port. But when I try to charge it from the vehicle power adapter, nothing happns.
I have an official HTC dual car charger: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003OQUJRQ/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00. This charger is rated (like the standard HTC wall chargers) to put out a current of 1A per each outlet. So I don't understand why this Music Adapter will charge via a wall charger, but not a vehicle, and they have the same output, and are made by the same company. I double checked that the vehicle charger works with other devices. It will charge my HTC EVO 4G LTE, my Jawbone ICON bluetooth headset, as well as other friends' phones.
Does anyone else have problems getting their HTC Bluetooth StereoClip to charge? I know it's not the end of the world--I can always take it inside the house to charge it when it dies every few days, but it sure would be convenient to just have it charge in the car overnight without having to remember to tote it back and forth.
Please help!!
Thanks.
Um, I looked at the pictures of this device. When you are in your car, are you plugging your charger into the phones charging port? Not the port on the Bluetooth adapter. Your phone will never charge if you are plugged into the Bluetooth adapters port.
Are you trying to use it while it is being charged? I think i read before that the stereoclip uses the BT to stream the sound, and i've had a few bluetooth headsets that didn't work if it was being charged, and won't charge if you're actively using it (just tried out of curiosity). Only thing i can recommend is to try a single microusb cigarette charger, maybe its the way the charger is wired.
---------- Post added at 12:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:39 PM ----------
One question that is unrelated to this charging issue: in the bluetooth pairing settings for the stereoclip, does it do phone mode as well as media or just media? My car's headunit does phone and i'd like to see if i can just have each device handle a separate stream.
Hmm. Interesting. Mine charges fine using a rocketfish/best buy car adapter I have and a generic micro usb cable I got from Monoprice. Charging occurs on mine when it's off or on, streaming or not. The adapter and cable also work to charge my phone and jawbone too.
Maybe try change your usb cable or car adapter?

When in the car, my phone sits in the car dock...on the windshield, so yes it is plugged into one of the ports. And I plug another USB cable (from the 2nd port) into the BT Music Adapter. It won't charge. I have to take it inside and charge it from a wall charger.

Okay...I had a spare Rocketfish vehicle charger lying around, and I just went out to the car and tried it. It charges just fine fine!! However, an official HTC vehicle charger with an official HTC USB cable won't charge an official HTC accessory...WEIRD.
So problem "temporarily" solved: I have to have to keep TWO vehicle chargers in the car--the dual HTC for the car dock, and the rocketfish for the HTC bluetooth adapter. This really sucks, and defeats the purpose of me buying a dual adapter. Or, I could just bring the adapter in every 4 or 5 days and charge it inside. It gets about 5 hours of music streaming before it dies. Oh well...
The issue I have with mine is that if I plug it into my Bose soundlink aux port and connect to it, it actually sounds better then just connecting to the soundlink itself. Using the new Apt-x and all.
But I plug it into my car aux in and it doesn't sound any better then my universal one I'd been using on a2dp

The dual charger could be splitting the Amps, I've heard of 2A adapters pushing 2 to one port or 1 and 1 if 2 things are plugged in. Did you try charging the BT adapter without the phone plugged into the second port? The BT adapter probably requires a specific minimum amperage where as the phone will just go into USB charging instead of wall charging mode if under 1A.
I tried every possible combination. And I have verified that it puts out simulataneously 2A (1A + 1A). I connected my EVO 4G LTE, plus a friends original EVO 4G, and they both showed "AC Charghing," which means 1A. And of course, I tried charging the StereoClip with nothing else. I don't get it.

It will pair with anything. I use it with my Nexus 7 mainly.
And just as a precaution.. Don't leave this in your car if it is hot where you live.
I had mine in my car, for probably a month. Never used it other then when i first got it to verify it worked. Went to use it again, nada..
Wouldnt charge, wouldnt turn on, nothin. I'm assuming the 100+ degree heat for a month+ destroyed the battery. Sprint provides a 1 year warranty on their accessories, so i was able to swap it out no issue though.

Yes, it will pair with anything. My first HTC EVO 4G LTE (stupid) decided to break, so I was stuck with a Samsung Intercept as a loaner phone for awhile. It will pair with any bluetooth device, however...if that device doesn't support the new apt-X coding technology (like the EVO 4G LTE), the audio may not be as clear, and the connection will likely have intermittent skips (as with the Samsung Intercept).

Has anyone else used the PowerGen car charger with the Note? I have a handful of other ones that all claim to fast-charge devices, but apparently it only works with iPhones and iPads. But since the PowerGen unit is on the list, can I assume people have used it and confirmed it will give me a 1A charge rate on the Note? I need a charger that can keep up with the Note occasionally drawing 1.4 A or more (display 100% brightness, GPS, LTE, Bluetooth all active, running Navigation).
A quick search for "powergen" in this forum only brings up the above thread.
Works like a champ. My battery was charging at 1600mAh while streaming soundcloud and using navigation. Definitely does the job.
I am using my car charger for galaxy tab 10.1 (2.0 amp) and it is working much better than any of the 1 amp chargers I have tried, OEM, boxwave, etc...
I also use the GT 101. 110V charging brick, so when I travel, only one brick and two cables. My experience is that the 2 amp charger works really well and will charge the phone while using GPS full time, where the OEM charger and other 1 amp chargers either maintain charge, or slightly discharge.
Thanks for the confirmation! Of course, now I discover Amazon won't ship that to Canada, and amazon.ca does not carry it. :crying: I'd go see what TELUS has to offer, but I'm sure it will be A) expensive and B) not have dual USB ports, or perhaps not even a detachable cord.
If you do find one, also buy a charge-only usb cord.

Is that still needed if the charger itself correctly supports fast charging? The cord I use now is the one from my Touchpad. I get 1 A to the Note from the AC plug, and the Touchpad gets around 1.8 A. I do also have a charge-only cable (much thinner cord, only two wires), but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

The cord from the touchpad is probably wired correctly internally for fast charge. I bought a similar dual car charger and did not see a difference with the micro usb sync cable. I only saw a difference with a charge-only micro usb cable. The phone sees what pins are connected and determines if it is going to charge in usb charge mode(<=500ma) or AC charge mode(>=500ma).

I don't think it is, because it also works as a normal USB data cable. If pins 2 and 3 are shorted (D+ and D-), then the cable become "charge only" and cannot be used for data.

Then it sounds like that car charger was an "iPad-compatible" one, i.e.: it does not have D+/D- shorted out to indicate to non-Apple devices that it is capable of more than 500 mA.

You short the pins inside the AC adapter or car charger, rather than the cable. If I understand correctly, the danger of using a charge-only cable is if you plug it into an actual USB port that isn't designed to supply more than 500 mA. Your device could then try to pull down, say, 2000 mA and potentially damage the power supply on your laptop or desktop.

I'm using the Rocketfish 3.1A Model# RF-M657D with my Note. While using Google Nav, lowest brightness, keys backlight off, Sync off, HSPA+, the phone still loses charge (albeit, slowly). I'm assuming this is because the charger is not internally shorted between pins two and three as it is marketed as a iPad/iPhone charger. I'm using a Belkin Data/Charge cable so I know that is not shorted.
I have been doing some reading and last night, I purchased the "Satechi Smart Adapter Compatible with Samsung Galaxy S (I can't post links yet, google it.) so I will report back when I receive and pair it with the Rocketfish.
One thing I can't understand is how some of you have reported 1600mA from your car chargers. I am reading that without this adapter/cable mod, the Note will only run 460mA or so. With the adapter/cable mod, the Note's hardware maxes out at 960mA. Also, is their an app that allows me to see how much amperage the Note is receiving or are you guys pulling out the multimeter?

Works like a champ. My battery was charging at 1600mAh while streaming soundcloud and using navigation. Definitely does the job.

Where/how do you get this info? Asking because I'm curious to see how my car charger does. It has usb ports rated at 2A, and I think it's 2A shared instead of per port, but want to see how it actually does when plugged in.

My rocket fish model must put out more than yours. My pic is above your post. With Google Nav, Google play music (streaming, not native music), full sync, brightness to at least 50% it only lost 4% over 30-40mins.

From what I read, your charger is an .5 amp.
It's not like my phone dies or anything, but it'll lose like 5% an hour and I could be exaggerating. Are you using a charge-only cable or modded cable/charger at all? Like I said, I think this phone is only pulling down 460mA without said mod and I find 1600mA to be incorrect as I read the Note will only pull down 960mA max. We'll see what this adapter does for my charge times.

They only thing I'm using is that exact setup posted. RF adapter and a Motorola atrix desktop dock charge cable.. (basically just a longer version of the standard wall charger)

Ah, charge-only cable is the main factor here.

OK, I lied, I'm using the OEM cable that came with the Motorola Atrix 4G, not the longer cable from the desktop dock. I just checked my car and that's the cable that's in there.
