[ Guide ] Fix Battery Drain Issue ( Root Required ) - Motorola Photon 4G

Guys This is my 1st Post on XDA.. So pls bare the mistakes that i make..
Am a Photon user for around a Month, i had a gr8 Battery life in the 1st, and after When i tried MIUI and CM9 and CM7 and rolled back to Stock Rom, my Battery life got messed up pretty badly..
I tried to drain the battery till my Photon died and recharged it again to 100% for 3 to 4 times, still no use at all..
As soon as Unplug the Charge from my Photon, 10% drops inside 30min without any issue..
I was digging our Photon section and i down a guide somewhere regarding battery calibration after a Fresh Rom install..
So what i did now is.
My Device is Rooted but no CWM in it.
I went into Play store and grabbed a free of a APP called Battery Calibrator
Installed it and Charged my Photon to 100%.
As soon i get notification that my device is fully charged, without unplugging the device from the charger, i launched the Battery Calibrator App and Click Calibrate Now button in the bottom and unplugged it from the charger..
Booommmm... 3hr 5min still at 100% with wifi turned on, few min of call and msgs. Still am at 100%
Let me know guys if this works out for you too..

I think your exaggerating a little. I will try it soon, and post results.

yeah... i think your phone is playin a joke on you. if its still showing 100%, then its probably showing the date as April 1st.
if u r unlocked, wiping stats is the best way. if not unlocked... well you are missing out on alota greatness with an unlocked photon.
Throw the finger to wimax (never was great and never will be, dead) and unlock

Sounds like you just wiped battery stats and the manager of the Android framework engineering department at google chimed in to debunk this process impacting battery life.
Not saying it's all placebo, but Dianne Hackborn is lol
I did expose a motorola bug while playing around one day which sucked a battery from full to dead in about 4 hours. Turns out moto has a bug where if you start the process of adding a new sync account, and back out or don't complete the process, it causes a wake lock and kills the device. Battery pulls, wiping cache/delvik/etc ... none of that works. Once i tied the mystery wake lock back to the add accounts bug, i deleted my accounts, set them back up, and the wake lock was gone which returned my battery life. I suffered through this for about 4 days and it was completely frustrating.
Cheers!
P.S. Maybe this can be moved to general?

In my experience, the phone goes to 99% IMMEDIATELY after you unplug off the charger.
Are you sure something didn't go screwy with your phone?

HOW TO: Solve Battery Life Issues

***NOTICE***
The ROM Manager version of CWM does NOT wipe battery stats properly, as with many other things. What you need is jt1134's version of CWM that is all happy and works and stuff.
You can find his happy CWM here. And here. And also here.
And here.
Big thanks to LegionTHEFecalExcretion for the heads up on that.
***END NOTICE***
NOTE: On current DL30 and EB01 ROMs, you will not see battery life like you did on DL09 with undervolted kernels. There are NO undervolted kernels as of yet, everything kernel wise with Froyo ROMs in very much stock. These steps will improve your battery life in comparison to when you flashed Froyo, but you are not going to see spectacular changes in battery life up to what you were getting with undervolted DL09, etc. It's just not possible until we get undervolted kernels and Froyo matures for our device, development wise.
Hi everyone, I've been seeing a lot of threads about bad battery life, whether switching to Kaoscinate, Vanilla, or DL30. Stop it! Just kidding. There is a simple process everyone should follow when switching between different enough ROMs, like AOSP, CM6 and TW Eclair and Froyo. This is how you retrain your battery.
1. Charge your battery to 100% (when it gets there, let it SIT there, your phone is NOT reporting correctly).
2. Reboot to Recovery and Advanced -> Wipe Battery Stats.
3. Reboot, and use your phone until it is VERY low (5-10%, you can let it die if you want).
4. Charge your phone back to 100%
5. (Optional) Power down, then power on phone. (Thanks goes to BrwnSuperman for this suggestion, give it a try!)
Your battery issues should be solved. This needs to be done every once in a while, especially when switching between different ROMs and OS versions.
User dalrym05 posted this alternate method for retraining the battery on page 4 as well, so I thought I would share it here in the OP. I'm posting this as a USE AT YOUR OWN RISK method, as I have not tested it, and am not quite sure what the *228 steps for it actually accomplish and have to do with retraining the OS battery reporting, so I'm leaving it quoted to dalrym05 for the time being.
dalrym05 said:
Here were my steps to better battery.
1.*228 option 1
2.*228 option 2
3. Run battery completely dead to 0%
4. Plug in and boot immediately into cwm
5. Wipe battery stats and dalvik cache
6. Reboot and let charge fully before unplugging
7. Completely discharge again and fully charge again.
After this you should notice a very nice increase in battery as I did. My battery life is back up to par with eclair.

NOTE: I did edit his post to make it a little more clear. I'm slightly anal retentive that way.
HybridByNature had an excellent suggestion on page 4. If people have good tips and tricks for maintaining good battery life, and they are easily reproducible, then I will gladly add them to the OP here. What works for you?
HybridByNature said:
This might also be a good place to add tips & tricks to extending battery life.
IE
-Close programs that you aren't using.
-Don't leave your camera or navigation running in the background.
-Turn off WiFi & GPS etc when you aren't using them.
-Don't run your screen at full brightness if you can help it.
-Figure out what uses more battery life than other things:
Pandora, internet browsing, downloading, camera/camcorder, Angry Birds etc.
If you are rooted, try and narrow it down to the best kernel/theme for your situation. I've found that I have better battery with a non-voodoo kernel but the performance increase is worth it so that's a trade-off that I make.
Let's hear from our readers: What is working for you?

Would not surprise me if this is all it is. I have turned my phone off at 5% for an hour and turned it back on without charging and then it showed 45%. I know when batteries are low letting them sit a little bit can help, but not that much.
It is just being reported inaccurately by the OS.
This how to has been reposted like 9001 times. But yes, this is one day to do it.

Yes, but not as a thread, it gets posted in everyone else's "Why does my battery life suck ass" threads, so I made this so maybe people would see it and try it before posting another useless question thread in Development.
Definitely works though. Did it yesterday. Good post. It has been posted in other threads ... but I think we all know people don't read through everything very often.

I have the battery charger and 3 batteries, I always run my battery low and leave it in the charger for a day.
I did this last night and it didn't work too well for me.
Also, when I go to wipe battery stats in the recovery, it doesn't tell me if it wiped or not, just goes back to the advanced menu.
And also, should I be concerned that when I cold boot into the recovery, it doesn't appear to be CWM? It says Android recovery...I know I have CWM recovery installed.
Samerhing happens to me... and I just took it off the charger and I'm on 96 percent in less than 1 min

Wow same here..I just took mine off the charger bout 10 minutes ago and it's at 95% now. I guess I'm gonna let the battery run completely dead and charge it and see what happens.
I did something similar. I charged to 100% while it was on, removed from charger then powered off. When phone was off I plugged charger back in and waited til it was at 100% then unplugged again and powered on. Waited until phone was completely on then unplugged again and connected to charger. Waited til it was at 100% and while still plugged in at 100% booted into recovery and wiped battery stats. Then rebooted phone into OS and unplugged. I had tried this previously with DL09 and it helped a little. Last night I wanted to see how my battery would drain after doing this. With WiFi on and I got about 10 emails during the night, from 8:30pm to 6:00am I lost only 13%!!! Previously I would have lost from 35 to 40%. ymmv

Wow.
If I go to Battery History and change the top dropdown to Partial Wake Usage, it says Android System at the top with a bar that's at least 75% full.

This is a proven technique, and it takes patience. Seeing the battery drop from 100% down to 95 or 96% after unplugging is normal behavior. I've done this already. Left my phone unplugged overnight and lost 1% battery. If you're too impatient to take the time to do this, that's your loss. You'll see the battery life "improve" over the course of a few days as the reporting gets more and more accurate.

I agree with supplysidejesus. This is a standard practice and should be done with each major rom or kernel install. This leak hasn't been put long enough for most of us to know what our expected battery life will be yet. Give it a few days for your phones to adjust.

try disabling gps in the notifications, that worked for me, but once i turn gps on again, it will drive up to a high percentage.

Battery is messed up- Help please.

Right i seriously need help now guys.
My battery is completely and utterly- f*cked.
It says it is charging but it doesnt charge- the number changes but it goes for 80% then drop to 70% etc so i can never get a full charge.
I thought i fixed it last night when i drained it and recharged it back to as high as i could get it (94%), unlocked it this morning and it went from 70% when i locked it last night to 50%- and thats not the worst part- i sent 3 texts and it went to 15% battery, yes, 15%.
I am appaled at it and its well and truly put me off buying another Android phone or Samsung phone.
I need help now, if you guys cant fix it for me, my warranty is over from Carphone Warehouse and i cant be arsed with it.
I cant afford to simply go and buy a new phone so please dont say that kind of dumb suggestion.
Thank you.
Also i want to know if the problem is my phone, the battery itself or the charger/usb cable.

Well, alittle phone info might help.
What phone is it?
How old is it?
If you do have warranty, I would suggest using it.
If you're rooted, try calibrating the battery, Either wipe the battery stats manually in CWM or just use this handy app from the market:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nema.batterycalibration&feature=search_result
be sure to follow instructions precisely.
Check to make sure that all your apps that have updates where it can notify you are set to update in intervals of.every 1-2 hours. If you have several games on the phone that have a simulation theme to it like paradise island there are constant clocks that will run in the background regardless if you use a task killer. That I'm only like 90% sure but of. If you think about It things kinda evolve in the game each little item takes a form of clock in the code..which drains battery. The more.games you have the more constant clocks that will run. If you have several social networking apps I.e Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Google+ etc or any other app that can post to one another social i.e Twitter will also post one Facebook at the same time. One post Will run both apps if one is always set to update like every 30 minutes both with run in the background. If any app that you log in with logs in with a.Facebook account then once you open that up and your signed in then the internet app will be active.because.its accessing.the internet to log in. So in the end check to see what the intervals are when apps refresh for notifications. Try setting your peek times and off peek times for updates, and uninstall Any apps that you haven't gone to for over a 4 days. The chances.are you rarely use them. Hopefully this helps. One last thing is that some batteries if it only takes 4 hrs to fully charge the battery stops charging and uses its own power regardless if its plugged in. Ie you plug the phone in when you go to bed at 10pm the phone takes 4hra so at 2am the battery no longer runs off the charger it runs from the battery itself. Then when you wake up it may aleady be at 80%.
I'd any of this helps let me know. Gold luck.

You need to redownload the Rom manager and do a new flash recovery. Other than that i think your battery might be just old. Batteries do have a limit to to how many times they can be recharged. That's why on new battery packages they say 1000 charges or something like that meaning after 1000 charges the battery will begin to increasingly die quicker. Sorry for the wording I'm not sure how to to word that. Youll probably be better off buying a new battery.

if you had your phone replaced you may have received a refurbished phone. Most businesses do that if your not there to pick a new one up.
I can try as a favor. Exactly what brand of phone do you have and version. I.E HTC Hero. if its a device that is on multiple carriers which carrier. I might have a battery laying around. If i have one they are in good shape I keep tons from friends who give me there old phones I use the phones for robotics but not the batteries So if you let me know what you have and if i have it i can mail the battery to you for free. I know how it feels when someone is in this case im more then will to help. its up to you.

Battery drain while powered off!

I have a serious problem.
My battery is draining more charge when it is powered off than when it is on!
First off, yes, I am powering it off and not just putting it in sleep.
What happens is this; I power it off for the night, battery at 100, turn it on in morning, battery is at 70-50! Now get this, I reboot this morning, battery instantly drops another 10%!!!!
What on earth is going on here? Does anyone else's have similar problems? I did Google it, but can't find a solution, although it looks like I am not the only one with the problem!
Please help!
Edit: here is a screenshot of my battery use, if anyone wants (sorry, don't know how to post picture other than as attachment)

Mine is US version, comes with 2.3.5.
Use the original version 2.2 Froyo that came with it. I did not want to update because everything works fine. no bugs of any kind. I think I did the right thing, because I have read several bugs related to the update to 2.3.5.
Do not always update is really necessary. Unless something does not work well or update the device will really improve. But this is not always true.
In my case the battery has excellent durability. An exception to games but that's with any Android. Even with a 2500 MAH as the G70. Luckily, I'm not adept at games.

I've notcied that my battery would drain faster when connected to wifi at home.
I have 5.0, 2.3.5 US version. I had a problem getting mine to charge to 100% (seemed to stop at 80%), but finally it hit 100%. Got to 80% in 3-4 hours, got to 100 in 6 hours extra!
Mine seems to drain "normally", at 65% after 23 hours. Not been doing a lot with it, just messing with apps (installing, rearranging). I always turn off wifi when not using it (especially if there's none around).
You might install "Power Tudor" and see what exactly is using that much power to drain yours that fast. Could be something stuck syncing (like if you have mail set to sync every 10 minutes).
Well, the thing is, it shouldn't be syncing or doing anything while powered off! Oh well, I have just gone to putting in airplane mode, then letting it sleep at night, doesn't burn any battery that way anyway!
Just curious, isn't "airplane mode" the same as just turning off wifi, since it has no cell radios?
I also question the time scale on the battery chart, never seems right to me. If your graph is 10 hours, and it was off at night, I would think it should register than 6-8 hours (or whatever your "night" was. Looks like it was only about an hour.

airplane mode turns off all antennas (wifi,GPS,FM radio). Yeah the battery chart doesn't make Denver to me either, but whatever.
Just keep it plugged in at night, I guess.

Battery drain problem..I think?

And im not sure what to do. I need some advice because I just cant find the issue! This morning was the final straw, my phone was at 100% charged and all i did was take about a 3 hour nap woke up to an over heated phone and the battery at 10%. WTH?? I use cpu spy and juice defender and nothing. I barely have any apps other than a wellsfargo one and 3g watchdog. Im running [ROM]<=TASK650's ICS'd OUT! V5 right now and i just switched over from cm7 because i thought maybe that would've been the problem? I dont know if its a deep sleep issue because ill look over at it sometimes and the screen just turns on out of nowhere and ill have to press the sleep button for it to turn back off. It also like to randomly turn off as it please. AHH THE FRUSTRATION .
Anyway enough rant can someone help? Or at least give some advice on what I should try or do? Thanks.
Your screenshots are inconsistent with your stated behavior... Loss of 20-30%/hour and an overheated phone says the thing is stuck at 1200 MHz and full load - but your CPUSpy graph shows only 9% at 1200, and a total of maybe 40-50 minutes since reset.
Also the battery graph in your first shot has a major discontinuity... It drops from 100% to 10% instantly. I've seen glitches of 20-30% jumps at a time after a fuel gauge reset, but never anything like that.
So then what your saying is I should kill it with fire and then return it and grab another one? lol I dont know anyone else with this type of situation. Im not just one to go and ask a question because im too lazy to search. I swear i looked and googled EVERYWHERE for some type of solution but i just haven't found someone with this type of problem.
as Entropy mentioned, that jump in the first screenshot makes no sense. You should probably recalibrate the fuel gauge.
Looking at the 2nd screenshot, a lack of deep sleep seems to be the culprit. You'll need to track down what's keeping your phone awake. I've read something about exporting the wakelock log but perhaps there's already an app for that...
Also, clicking on the graph (in the first SS) will show you a more detailed burn down which might help isolate the issue.
Lastly, did you change kernels as well?
Im sorry im fairly new at this. It just has the kernel that the rom came with. I recalibrated the fuel gauge like you said and retook some screen shots that ill just leave here. It keeps over heating and Shutting off on me every half hour or so. On top of that The battery just drains in a mater of 3 to 4 hours. I think the problem is just the phone itself. Im going to try and put the original stock rom on it later this week when i have time (Finals are driving me crazy) and then Im going to try and send it back and get another one. I might need a usb jig thingy tho. Its very frustrating this phone isn't even a month old and like i said before i googled for a full hour and a half and I just couldnt find a solution to this.
mmmk this just happened.
That certainly doesn't look normal. When it takes those sharp dives is the phone rebooting? Also when you flashed your new ROM did you wipe all data in cwm first?

I had a similar problem (phone got extremely hot) when i first flashed to UnNamed but after re-calibrating the fuel gauge a few times everything was all good.

Suggest running better battery stats from a full charge and when you get that instant drop go into bbs look at partial wake locks.
Also have you done any
oc/uc ?
Running ICScrewD ROM

Yes it shuts off every half hour or so and when i realize it and turn it back on the battery is drained significantly and yes i wiped all the data in cwm.

Ok Ill definitely give that a try the moment I have a chance and report back here the results. I haven't done any oc/uc either. Thank you guys for taking the time to help me figure this out.
I would try a CWM Backup. Then Factory Reset, Cache Wipe. Then install a fresh copy of Task v6. If that doesn't fix it, restore back to your backup you did.
I was having fun with undervolting myself (would crash my phone). Every battery pull I did, I lost 20-50% battery life. JUST turning the phone back on! Though in my case the phone would stick at this percentage for a long time, then when it caught up, eventually draining. I would assume the battery was not calibrated, but people keep telling me "this battery does not need calibration" (Whatever).
It seemed to fix itself for me though, after letting it drain down a bit more. I let it fully charge this time with the official wall charger. This was with Task & Siyah. Has not happened since.
I hope your battery works itself out!

kk so I'd guess your battery really isn't that low, it's just reading low after those reboots. For whatever reason sometimes the phone will show a significant loss after a reboot, but really didn't lose that much. However something still isn't rite obviously. I'd suggest redownloading your ROM and clearing/wiping everything in CWM. And do a fresh install. Someone might be better able to help, but if I was getting random power downs that's probably what I'd try. (I might be wrong, but I don't see how wakelocks would be causing it to power down)

Thanks for the input everyone. I just got back from class now and my phones dead no surprise there but Im gonna let it charge back up and ill repost some screen shots of cpu spy and betterbatterystats since i just got that running on the phone. Afterwards Im going to try to just wipe everything on cwm reinstall a rom and see what happens from there. I bought a usb jig that should be coming in by the end of the week just in case all else fails and i'll just send it to att and have them ship me a new one. Thanks for all the feedback you guys are awesome!
OH I forgot to mention I dont think the phone actually shuts off because I was talking on it for a bit but i was talking through my bluetooth headset. I went to check if i had a text message and the screen wouldn't power on but I was still able to talk on the phone WTF? Makes no sense to me.
Really starting to wonder if your CPU has voltages it can't handle...

[Q][SOLVED] HELP Sudden Battery Drain

This is what happened...
yesterday at 7:00 AM my phone was at 98% Battery
Only Flight mod and Power saver mod was enabled,
Every thing else was disabled
Then i left home without taking my phone ( It was on my bed i forgot to take)
Later i returned home at 2:00 PM
And found my phone very hot.
Now the battery is at 14%
It says 88% of Battery was used for Android OS
Then i turned off my phone
After some time heat went off...
Then i turned on and plugged in for Charging
It Took 4 hours to charge 24% :crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:
Can anyone please explain whats happening ???
It sounds like something is keeping the cpu running, which is why android is is so high and explain the battery loss and heat. You could go into your settings and look at the running apps in applications manager, and see if anything is out of the ordinary.

Could be something like mediascanner scanning the sdcard if you hve one. GSAM and BBS are good apps to check wakelocks. The latter is better but it's a pay for app.

1. what rom are you using? 2. slow charging may be due to cable. change the cable and check the result. :good:
Remove new installed apps, check cable, restart your phone...
Now its working fine
Is there any way to find out which app was using my Battery ?
I'm On I9300XXUFME7 – Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean leaked firmware

I have the exact same problem but mine hasn't gone away. I can charge it all night and in the morning it will be at like 40%.
It only started after I flashed that leaked firmware. I have since rooted it and frozen out all the bloatware to no avail.
I'd love to hear any suggestions on how to solve this?

Well theres 2 things...
1) Like Laura, drain so excessive that when charging it is slow
2) No drain, just slow charging
Different answers for both situations. Are you 1 or 2?

The best app IMHO is BetterBattery Stats. It's not free though, but it's a great asset. I have the widget on my home screen at all times. If you're not in a position to pay for an app, try GSAM, but BBS IS better. This will only be good until you pull the battery though so you need to ensure you check before rebooting. It will show you which apps are keeping the phone awake etc.

Does your phone gets over heated during the charging time ?
Have you tried another cable for charging ?

I'm ready to Pay for BetterBattery Stats..
I don't mind if its a paid app or not as long as it servers me good...
After installing that app do I have to remove my battery and re-insert it ?
What rootSU meant is the app will record data till the time you pull out your battery.

Yep. Best way to get good stats is to charge the phone full, unplug it and go about your business. Try not to reboot. At the end of the day lets see those stats and what we can find out.
Here is the list of apps on my Phone...
I don't have many apps...
I have Flashed my phone just a week ago..
And I haven't got time to restore all my apps again..
So, this is all the apps that i pretty much use now...
