Hi
when I understood it in the right way, the S2 and S3 have the same GPU. (mali)
The only Difference is that the one from the S3 can run at 400Mhz.
But u can overclock the one from the S2 to 400 MHz too.
My question:
1.)If they run the GPU in the S3 @400 MHz is it then safe to overclock it in the S2 to 400MHz?
Or do they have a whole new cooling concept?
2.) On what depends the video decoding speed?
I can run h264 movies in 1080p at up to 14 MBit /s on my S2.
What bitrates is the S3 capable of?
Do they use CPU or GPU for hardware decoding?
Thx in advance
Generally hd video decoding are done via GPU, s3 is capable of playing any video at any format. the same stands for s2 , i havent found any videos incapable of playing.
No its not the same gpu.
sgs3 has double the power of sgs2 in gpu department due to clock speed and may be a nm shrink.
edit: looks like both are quadcore gpus
No its not the same gpu.

From what source you take that information?
My information:
S2 : DualCore + Mali 400 @ 266Mhz
S3 : QuadCore + Mali 400 @ 400Mhz

I dont talk about the format.
The bitrate is the interesting thing. I can't play h264 videos with more than 14Mbit/s on my S2 @ an 1080p resolution
*push*
Does the galaxy s2 have mali-400mp4 the quad-core version of mali-400mp or some other one ?
it's really confusing
if it's a quad-core unit then how do i check that ?
And if possible could any of you put up a screen shot of gpu info from quadrant
improved Exynos CPU chip on a smaller die 32nm, (s2 45nm), its safe to use it at 400mhz but more heat is generated
Samsung mentioned its graphics performance is 50% higher than in the Galaxy S II, but this can easily be done by just upping the clock speed of the GPU to about 400MHz.

S2: 45 nm
S3: 32 nm
So they are different chips with different thermal profiles. Run the S3 at 400MHz and it is fine. Run the S2 at 400MHz and you get a lot of heat being generated.

The GPU can decode that without problems. Is your h264 video using AC3 audio? Test using a video with a standard mp3 audio track.
S3 more plastic feals cheap not my new Phone.. I am still use my sgs2.
Both are fast at playing Videos. I cant find any Video that can or will make any problem
I think i sell my s3

I transferred some videos recorded on my friend's s3 and played them on my phone and it plays fine but gets stuck at some points, misses some frames and then continues, audio goes on but video gets stuck. It worked fine if I forward to the point where it happens, then that part plays smoothly. from what I read, the S2 and S3 both record 1080 at 17 mbps so why is this happening? The files are stored on the internal SD and I played them using stock video player. I'm on siyah kernal also.

Hi! Happy new year! I've jus bought a brand new xperia neo on amazon and i'm waiting for being delivered soon (i'm in Venezuela). looking for more information about the smartphone i've seen that it has a 8.1mpx camera but only record at 720p, the question is ¿It's possible to enable 1080p recording with this camera? it has a very good hardware so i think it's very possible.
What do you know about it?
Thanks a lot!

Don't think so:
The X10 also didn't have multi-touch and 720p recording when it was launched, but after an update it was capable of that.
But maybe the quality is better on 720p than on 1080p, less noise, better light conditions, more fps.
For x10
Yes, [email protected] ([email protected] with cont. autofocus via Android 2.1 Eclair update)
---
For HD video is required Single core 1GHz which x10 have.
But for FULL HD is required minimal 1.0 Dual core processor which x10 dont have, arc dont have and neo dont have.
Phone with 1.0ghz single core dosent have power enough to record that resolution or even playback it.

Check Desire HD/s threads... It have same hardware. This MSM chips are not capable of 1080p recording or playback. Nothing will change that.
i can't see diference betwen 720p to 1080p on 3.7 screen
Ok now i Get it, thanks for the replys, maybe the developers in the future can do something about it. Dont loose the hopes!!

yes but if you gonna see videos on LCD TV 42" you can note the difference between resolutions. That's why i'm asking in the first place.
It is possible to do. But i can only tell it is hard and takes alot of time. The Canon EOS 500D has also only 1080p (20fps) and it took a **** time before someone could make it 24 fps (still not usuable enough though) But im comparing DLSR with smartphone just my words
Its processor limitation not camera sensor limitation...

After reading this tread i actually searched the market and found Lgcamera (free)
After installing it i changed to cam mode and selected 1080p and tried to record...
And actually it starterd ---RECORDING 1080p--- After that i tried it again but it wasnt able to record a video, even after setting it to 720p it still wasnt able to record.
So i installed it again and it worked again. So i looks like neo can record
1920x1080p - h.264 - mp4 - up to 30 bitrate and max of 30 fps
--> Looks like cleraring cache & data of Lgcamera fixes the "cannot record video bug" so u dont have to install it every time again.
To record properly i OC to 1800 Ondemand with 40 cpu treshhold, using lower settings resolved for me not to be able to record video in 1080 (even after reinstalling)
I see quite a improvement on a bigger screen.

m&m mmm schmeckt gut !
the device is based on qualcomm 8255 chip just like HTC Sensation XL
but im wondering why with a same mkv video data, XL can play it with hardware acceleration or you can say hardware decode ,but not on Ray with the same player software, i used to try by bsplayer downloaded from the market
so im wondering if there are something missed on stock rom to make it work?
Ray have MSM8255. Which is Single-core CPU + Adreno 205. Sensation XL have MSM8255T, which is Dual-core CPU + Adreno 220.
Answer is: No, you cant play video with res. higher than 720p (and not even the .mkv ones.) Still, you can use players, like DICE with software acceleration enabled to watch those videos (1080p=laggin hell).
no, HTC sensation XL is also this chip running with 1.5Ghz with adreno 205
the video is 720p, i know this chip can only afford 720p decoding
the same result with HTC Flyer with 8255 adreno 205
What difference does it make?
Your device doesnt have 1280x720 screen resolution, It's got 854x480. So a 480p video is perfect for the device's screen...
Emmm, go to any device specific site, and lurk there abouut those platforms. Sensation: Dual core, Xperia 2011 : Single core

single core 8255 with adreno 205 certainly
maybe its different spec in different country.. but in Asia, its single core 8255...just like Ray and HTC Flyer...
There are 3 different Sensations... The normal one, the XL and the XE. The normal one and the XE have a MSM8260 dual core clocked at 1.2 and 1.5Ghz respectively. The XL is the only single core one. So yea you are wrong and right at the same time

As you can see with the exception of the screen, camera, battery and a bit of height/weight they are indeed very similar. I saw a video on youtube with a guy who overclocked his GS1 to 1.7 ghz. Also if you go look at AnTuTu Benchmark v2.8.2 the highest clock speed is 1.8ghz. This got me the thinking that it could be possible with the Galaxy Player 4.0. Any thoughts on this?

It's potentially possible, but not very practical. I've overclocked to 1.7GHz with my Samsung Galaxy Player 5 so far, but I wouldn't keep it at that regularly. I only overclock to 1.5GHz on a regular basis. Any higher is just dangerous and not worth the extra speed.
I'm probably going to scrap modding the SGP5 and just buy a Galaxy Nexus Tablet 7 since that will have more options for getting the most power out of it with the quad-core proc + more RAM, etc

Well if the 5.0 can do I'm sure the 4.0 can too. I was just wondering that's all. Also can you tell me what did you get in quadrant? The only thing about the Galaxy Nexus Tablet wrong is that there's no micro usb. To me that was a very bad move on Samsung's Part. It makes no sense imo.
I've had my 5.0 to 1.7ghz as well, but backed off because the players lack a cpu temp sensor. I run mine daily at 1.5 but I have no idea what the 4.0 is capable of.
If the 4.0 uses the Hummingbird CPU and it's rooted I believe the Tegrak Overclock can do the work.

NONE of the 4.0 ROM's are default overclocked, as overclocking has more to do with the kernel then the ROM.
To the OP I run the terrasilent kernel on my 4.0 and use the app "no frills cpu" it allows for a 1.2 Ghz overclock and more importantly allows "apply on boot" for free, tegrak will go higher but you'll need to buy the ultimate version to do it and have it "apply on boot".
Yes I believe Hanthesolo Actually went up to 1.5GHz but even still if you flash a custom kernel it will by default run at 1.2GHz

Yes and No, yes Han has pushed his to 1.5Ghz but BY DEFAULT it's the stock 1Ghz NOT 1.2Ghz no matter what ROM or Kernel you run on the 4.0, you must use an APP to overclock, the kernels simply give you the ABILITY to overclock.
No Frills CPU will let you do 1.2Ghz and apply on boot for free
Tegrak will do 1.3Ghz but has to be manually applied for free
Tegrak Ultimate will go higher but you have to buy it

What was your Quadrant Score?
I have experienced some pretty choppy graphics when playing NFS Most Wanted with my i9300. The game stutters from time to time and by the looks of it it seems rendered at 20-22 FPS (not terribly laggy, but it's not good below 24).
So I decided to port NFS Most Wanted from my GS3 to my GS1 (i9000), which was probably incompatible from the market because of the "old" hardware. To my surprise, the game was rendered at a steady 40+ FPS with only the occasional stutter when 3+ cops are after me and 5 cars are on display. This, on a 1.14 Ghz Exynos Single core processor with a PowerVR SGX 540 card running at 200 Mhz.
Can someone tell me what is the reason behind this? Is this a Mali (ARM) specific problem? A Mali 400 running at 533 Mhz with the Exynos Quad should be able to smoke the SGX 540 running at 200 Mhz. Yes the SGX is powering a WVGA display I know, but with over twice the clock rate I don't see why the Mali should perform worse!
Experienced the same. I thought it was just a laggy game but I tried it on an Xperia Ion and was suprised that it turned out smoother than the SIII
works fine here. stock unrooted atm. i'm guessing over 40fps.

Ion has the Adreno 220 if i recall correctly? It should be more or less equal to Mali, but a Mali at that clock rate should be faster. Both the Ion and Sgs3 render 720p displays so its a fair fight there.

I assume you are sticking with the stock clock rates as well (1.4 GHz CPU, 440 MHz GPU)? Are you on 4.1.2 or 4.1.1? I have tries both ELL5 4.1.2 and CM10.1 and they both produce similar results, but CM was slightly worse.

Of course quad core is better.. it lags maybe because the person playing has app running in the background.

long story short no, the main problem is on thermal issue and games optimization
when you talking about games, it's not about the processor. It's about the gpu and the screen resolution, the overclocked mali on s3 doesnt have enough muscle to drive the 720p screen(only applied to heavy effect gameloft games). Some new games is optimized for S3 tough, like Horn for example, Its lag on S2 but not on S3.
in term on gaming , i only see note 3 as a worthy upgrade from S2

when you talking about games, it's not about the processor.

Any snapdragon 600/800 can handle hi-end graphics cuz these monstruous cpus come with a powerfull gpu that handles 1080p flawlessly

search gfxbench
on android there are many things to consider if you want to play high end games.
the screen resolusion
the rom
the kernel
the game developer optimization
for example gta 3 is more smooth on tegra 3 than adreno 320,because the game is more optimized on tegra

Overclocked? S3 has 2 more GPU cores vs S2's Mali ,not overclocked alone.
Gaming is not a problem on my s3 at least ,GPU drivers are continuously being updated by Samsung I9300XXUGMK6 for example has the latest driver.

logic?
mali 400 have max 4 core ,if S3 have more 2 cores than mali 400 on S2 then you can say is mali 400 mp6, is there mali 400 mp6? no , go email arm mr smartass
S3 mali 400 gpu MP4 is the same as S2 only overclocked
it's faster because it's overclocked and better 32nm process

Thanks for the heads up.
I had read somewhere that 4210 has mali400mp2.
So it looks like the newer process gives the 4412 enough headroom for a higher clocked GPU (and maybe some micro architectural improvements?)

But still the onscreen performance of S3 is more than S2 in gfx benchmark ,which certainly proves that the mali400 in S3 does better than the one in S2 even though it has to push 2.4 times the pixels.

it's faster because it's overclocked. You better read anandtech galaxy s2 international review about mali gpu architecture, all the answer for your question is in there.

You can overclock s2 like s3 to 440mhz ,but it won't yield same results due to thermal/power constraints (45nm vs 32nm)
Also mali400(in s3) can be over clocked to 700mhz stably which shows that there is a lot of headroom left in s3.
Everything aside,my point is S3 scores more than S2 in on screen Gfxbench which does prove that S3 does better than S2 in reality.
(This is what OP asked)

if you overclock s2 gpu would it be on par with s3 gaming performence? or is quad core s3 better than dual core s2 when it comes to high end games. cause i seen asphalt 8 lag on s3 while it didnt on s2

it may be better in benchmark, but the fill rate still not enough for the 720p screen, especially in real life case.
maybe you can overclock the gpu to 533mhz, play asphalt 8 in max setting and share the fps perfomance
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=im_w-EZifjU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LorZHr9MErk
Looking at the date it was posted (that video) that s3 must have been running old 4.1 firmware.
performance has increased by ~30% in GPU benchmarks and
maybe even more in real gaming from 4.2 onwards (which have the latest Mali drivers).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2124093
I am done with gaming right now but from my experience ,with latest Mali drivers asphalt 8 was smooth(Maxed out) except for one stage which was I think was the Tokyo race where fps averaged about 20fps (S2 lagged in that stage too).
And rip tide GP2 was smooth throughout with no lag and fps averaged around 52 (used fps meter from play store )
Gaming was a pain before 4.2 ,but right now it isn't for the most part(CPU throttling down to 800mhz )
No other game in my memory lagged usually I keep CPU at 1300mhz and with some undervolting (to decrease throttling )
and GPU at 350mhz (that's right Riptide GP2 was smooth at the frequency) but for asphalt 8 440-533mhz and maybe 700mhz when I come across a game which really lags.(Again 700mhz is stable ,no crashes or instability only battery drains pretty fast.)
Actually fillrate has been the strong part for Mali 400 gpu.
