Question about AOKP/AOSP, Sammy ROMs, AllShare & altenatives - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wondering if it's possible to combine the awesome customization ability of AOKP/AOSP with Sammy apps like AllShare. If not, is there an alternative? My relatives, friends & I have Sammy TV's in the house & I would love to share with them hence the question. I'm also slowing converting them to Sammy phones. With AllShare Cast coming out in the future, I'm trying to figure out the best way for us to share with each other.
Some of them have PCs plugged into the TVs to share videos but we are trying to do something different plus the kids love to play games off my S3. I know I can do MHL to HDMI but I haven't been able to buy the new connector for it.

Samsung apps require Samsung framework.

I figured that much but was hoping there would be an alternative to have the best of both worlds.

I've been able to find a few but nothing like the ability on a Sammy ROM & turning on sharing to share directly from the phone to the TV. All the apps I've found wants me to install their software on a PC to be able to share to the TV.
Not all my friends & relatives are tech savvy, so they want to easiest solution as possible. Plus, not all of them have a PC connected to their TVs.

Look, like sammy stuff? Stick with Sammy roms.
Take it from an aosp developer (me) that sammy stuff will not work without sammy roms.
Its pointless asking. Sammy is so advanced that aosp is a step backwards

who doesn't want an AOSP rom?
I also really don't care about an ICS release - though I'll happily take it, stock and rooted.

When the ICS kernel is ready, you can flash the i9100 stock ICS rom.
I'll probably try it out at the very least. I think I'm addicted to flashing.

I just don't like thw TW launcher as much. It's good, don't get me wrong, but I wish it had more flexibility. TW 4.5 has some of those, but then it lacks some from the official TW3.
Other wise, I like some of the other additions by Samsung. Specially the changes in Clock and Contacts.
So now I am aiming for stock i9100 + Nova/Apex launcher
Wow... just...wow....how can you have Android phone, and just want a phone that just works? Just curious case my phone is my computer,TV. Dvr ....everything

I like Samsung based over aosp based too. But development on both fronts helps make for an overall better experience for anyone who likes flashing and tinkering with there phone.
As far as tw launcher, it has gotten allot better, but no matter whether I run asop based or Samsung based I always seem to find my way to go launcher or adw.
Once ics is working well enough for me to keep it on my phone longer than a day or two, I'm going to spend some time checking out the nova launcher.

I partially agree. I don't really care about ICS, but I'll probably update to it when it comes out. I am perfectly happy with the setup I have now. I dont't understand why people are acting like they "need" it.
I also like AOSP and its simplicity, but I love the media format support provided by Samsung roms. Full 1080p wmv's @ 10mbps? Yes please. I don't care for Touchwiz launcher itself though.
And I can't live without allshare
I might be crazy but if a rom has it removed on install I will instantly flash another rom with it.

I find you need a balance between constantly flashing and having a functional device.

My phone is a communication device primarily, a personal organizer and music source for my truck, and sometimes light gaming device.
It'll never replace my desktop, and it'll never replace my HTPC + 55" Samsung LED SmartTV. I just can't stand watching video on such a small screen.

1.) Flashing ROMs doesn't mean one's device doesn't work. It simply means they want a change from stock/whatever they decide to change from.
2.) Flashing ROMs doesn't disable your device as a communication platform. AOSP based ROMs (With ICS, at least) have a better calendar, camera application, and are compatible with virtually every app you currently have now.
3.) Not trying to sound like a ****, but if you just want it to work and aren't concerned with flashing the ROM or anything, why are you on XDA Developers?

[Q] CM9/AOKP MHL support?

Sorry to ask this again, since previous posts have not been updated in awhile, but is there any update on MHL support for the i777 in the most recent CM9/AOKP?
Just tried it, still doesn't work. It shows whatever is on the screen when first plugged in, but doesn't update screen changes.
There's something I don't understand about this though... I was under the impression that it didn't work because of a closed-source Samsung driver, but it works on the Galaxy Nexus. If the GNex is very close in hardware to the i777/i9100, why couldn't the driver be copied right into these devices, even if it is closed source? Hopefully someone in the know will enlighten this noob.

I forget where the support dropped, but it used to play video fine. MX player could push 1080p content fine. But, only local video worked, not Netflix, and not any other screen mirroring like games. Last time I tried it, it doesn't work anymore.

First Post
Hello to every member of this thread, this is actually my first post on XDA.
You know, i've been following this thread from the outside, but I decided to register and take part because this MHL issue is driving me crazy.
I was an AOKP full user, since I found their JB ROM stabilty and speed awesome. However, yesterday I received a MHL adapter by Samsung, and got terribly dissapointed by the fact that the MHL was not working.
It doesnt even show the first screen image, like someone said. In my case, was a big "NO SIGNAL" sign on the TV.
This morning, after some research, I discovered that CM9 nor AOKP were MHL friendly, so I started trying random ROMS to see if any of them work. Only tried Serendipity and Shostock.
Compared with AOKP, both of them are very limited (no ROM customization, plus some bugs...) but the MHL DID work, and got very dissapointed:
My HDTV shows an ugly and pixelated mirror of my homescreen (maybe a resolution issue?)
Regarding speed, didnt find any lags, even with the Rise of Glory game... But the image quality was SO bad, that I prefeer looking at the phone, rather than the tv (in the phone, not a single quality drop):
So, here I am, now Im about to try Mystic Glory ROM, to see if I can get a decent MHL viewing.
You know, even the YouTUbe app, downloading an HD 720p video, in the TV looked like an awful 360p.
Already checked the TV configuration, is not possible to set the HDMI resolution (and couldnt find any resolution change for the phone).
One last thing, I find really suspicious the fact that my phone doesnt react when I plug the adapter.
Any Ideas?
Big hug for everyone
If you had read around you would know mhl is not working on aosp roms, it is working on touchwiz roms.

Yeah, but is almost impossible to know wich ones are aosp based or touchwiz based... Just came from testing Mystic Glory, not only the MHL didnt work, but also the rom included the wrong kernel and my phone is working horribly. Im about to try a different one.

Maybe Im too noob to get this straight, but Im studying the Development section and all the ROMS have a beatiful description, but none of them tell if they are AOSP or TouchWiz based (except Cm9 and AOKP, wich are obvious...)
So, can U name (only name!) the best TW based custom ROM for you? So I can look forward to get it...

Tibu file(s) transfer

Good morning all youz. I am receiving my Gnote2 (verizon) today from swappa. OK, it is rooted and unlocked. It has Keen put back to stock but still rooted and unlocked. Couple of different things. I thought about taken Tibu files I have on my gnex save them on laptop and then transfer it to gnote. Is that 'correct thinking'?
Also, since it is on stock and I have been reading in all the forums about NOT taking the OTA. I am a crackflasher so I get that the roms have the ota in them. So what is the best rom 'in someones opinion's (winkwink)out there. I definitely need wifi wireless hotspot (not detected) so I can use my tablet anywhere.
Thanks.

From what I understand you can take the folders from Tibu and move them to a new phone, but I dont know if everything will work. Its always best to just download all the apps, from the Play Store or whatever other app stores you use, in my opinion. Some apps may not work and may cause issues on your rom, ultimately its your choice though. If you have problems you could go back to a nandroid and then download the apps from the app market.
As for good roms.... Well that depends on if you want to stay on TW, for the S-pen and various other features, or if you want AOSP.
If you want TW I would suggest CleanRom ACE or Beans, CR is always updated to the latest update with a crapload of features packed in and has an Aroma installer so you can choose exactly what apps and mods you want. Beans is a AOSP themed TW rom with a crapload of stuff packed in too and has a bunch of mods that you can flash after the rom. I prefer Scotts CleanRom ACE but it is really up to you as to whether you would have the AOSP theme or go with the way stock TW looks.
As for AOSP I would suggest Vanilla Rootbox or ParanoidAndroid. Those are my 2 favorites and the list of new stuff on them is huge so I am not going to type that out. The downside with AOSP is you lose the special S-pen features and the special apps like S-note. You can add the majority of S-pen features back to AOSP with an app name GMD Spen Control from the Play store, its a little pricey but is most definitely worth it because it even adds new S-pen features to TW.

MultiWindow - is it growing on you?

So for the first few months I've had this thing I turned off almost all touchwiz bells and whistles. Bad memories from previously owned samsung devices.
Anywho I've recently been doing a lot of Youtubing and am finding multiwindow very very helpful (I'm mainly interested in the audio). Anyone else found a us for it?
How about the other stuff like air *?

Nope that's only for TW no way of easily porting that over and since cm is for many different devices... Let's just say it would be a massive nuclear pain in the ass to even attempt to port it over... Not to mention it would almost certainly be illegal because of patents and probably have to dirty hack with samsung manufacturer code signatures.

No, I find multiwin to be annoying, I run CM to NOT have any TouchWiz stuff, most of which I don't need or want.
CM does everything I want and/or need so I don't miss any of the TouchWiz annoyances.... err, I mean, features.

Multiwindow for asop - Who is on it ?

Multiwindow provides true multitasking abilities and Samsung has shown that it works great.
However none of the asop based roms have this ability.
Cyanogen started work on it but Google cut it short. But I guess Google said nothing when Samsung did the same thing.
Recently Paranoid android team started to work on it, but still very primitive.
Does anyone know any developer working on getting this feature ?
I think they did something like that on paranadroid rom

Bump.. I'd love to see this in AOSP, until then i'd also like to see more apps have widget interfaces which could provide a similar effect. IE A widget for browser and an IM chat widget so you can have both open at once.
It is hard to get this working without breaking Samsung copyrights. Some are working in it but some are not as they see no real benifit from it.

I never said anything about their framework. I said copyrights. They are very different things. You have to understand that the way something is done on a code level can be copyrighted and in doing so no one else can make it happen in the same way. So it would be pretty much rewritting the entire function from scratch. Then they have to make sure that it is not breaking copyrights.
