Best Hackable 10" Android Tablet for $300-$400? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Have had a Sony Tablet S that I have enjoyed, but as time goes on I find the inability to root it (came with the wrong kernel and then I got the upgrade notice to ICS the next day which sealed my fate) has become a larger and larger problem. Biggest issue is that the version of ICS on it makes the SD Card read only unless you use the Sony File Transfer program.
So am thinking of getting another 9-10" Android tablet. Would like to make sure it is at least dual core, and this time I'd like to make sure it's easily rooted, etc. Anything like that out there in the $300-$400 range? Would be great if like the Sony it supported a full sized SD card, but I will make do if it at least handles a micro SD.
Thanks in advance!

Xoom. Got jb ota over a week ago and its not too hard to find one for cheap. I got a 32gb for 299 at Walmart in January.

Even if its getting older the Xoom does look like a good tablet. It gets quick OS updates from Google, it already has Jelly Bean available. I don't know any other 9-10" tablets that even have JB yet, besides unofficial CM10 roms.

Xoom, eBay has great prices on it.

[Q] Which android tablet to buy ?

Hi to all,
I'm looking for a new tablet but don't now which is the best for a reasonable price.
I'm owning a Flytouch 3 but can't get used to the resistive screen (i'm used to the capacitive screen of my HTC Desire-S)
So my question , wich one is the best , cheapest and of course can be rooted ?
Nook colour looks promising, Very reasonable price,
Has its own XDA section too

2 things i want:
Capacitive touch (if possible multi)
10"
I don't know what reasonable price means for you, but Motorola Xoom is a great tablet

Nobody else got one ? strange , am i in the wrong section here ?
Its just your question is more of a personal choice thing. I have the Asus Tf. To me its a good tablet at a decent price, but to another person it might not be. If you're able go to a place that carry a few different brand and play with them.
baseballfanz is right its a personally opinion. Me personally I like the HTC Flyer. I have and EVO 4G and I am a sense junkie so it fits me. Price isn't too bad either. like $599.99 plus tax for one without a contract. Its not very big only 8" i think but thats big enough for me.
I'm looking for one to, which is better Samsung or HTC?
advent vega
i have a advent vega good cheap tablet got mine rooted and running android 3.1 and as far as i am aware it can run android 3.3 so go for that
pcpro.co.uk/reviews/smartphones/363172/advent-vega
from the above website
The Advent Vega is one of the more interesting tablets to appear in the run-up to Christmas. Priced at £250 inc VAT and sold exclusively through Dixons Group stores such as PC World, it includes a 10.1in capacitive touchscreen, a 1GHz Nvidia Tegra processor, 512MB of RAM and, crucially, Android 2.2.
I recommend the Asus EEE Transformer. It gets Android updates faster than any other device I've ever seen. It's responsive, and if you buy the dock keyboard, it has full SD and USB support. Without it, you still get a MicroSD slot and HDMI. Honestly, best featured tablet I've ever seen. I switched from my iPad for it.
if you must have a sd slot, get the motorola xoom, it's been rated as one of the best tablet, but if you dont need the sd slot, go for the galaxy tab 10.1.
i'm considering either the galaxy tab 10.1 or 8.9, both out at the moment, or wait for the galaxy tab 7.7, i have till end of december to decide.
the chances is, it should be the galaxy tab 7.7, because of the super amoled plus screen and built in sd slot that i want.
I have been looking at Tablets for literally a month and I havent made up my mind yet. I was originally looking at the Thrive, but changed my mind since it is really flimsy. Then I thought about getting the transformer but realized its really only huge sell point(to me) was the keyboard, which I wouldnt be getting. Then I was completely sold on the Xoom, and I almost bought it but decided to wait.. 2 days after waiting I starting looking at the 10.1 galaxy tab. So now Im torn between the Xoom and galaxy tab. Any advice would be real nice. I like that google bought moto, means the xoom will get updates sooner than any, but I like touchwiz(aside from the noticeable tag when changes pages). samsung has THE best screen out there and its thin and light. But the xoom is build more solidly and is more sturdy. They are like opposites while still being the same product so I am just stuck... lol
I've also have been looking for a while now and yesterday i ordered the motorola xoom , i've read a lot of reviews about a lot of tablets , and the xoom is still the best i think (will post if testing is done).I know motorla is working on a second xoom , but couldn't wait anymore

[Q] Any thoughts on NT replacement?

As I didn't root before 1.4.1 and still don't want to root I'm thinking of returning my NT. Anyone have any thoughts on some of the other 7" tabs out there as a replacement?
Acer a100.
Battery life is not as good, but it's a solid tablet for the same money
Maybe the Archos 70B Internet Tablet might interest you. I just saw an article saying it should be coming out soon. I'd post a link but my NT won't let me copy & paste. I will be seriously considering returning my NT before January 31 if things still look as they do now.

Yeah, I've looked at the Acer & the Lenovo ideapad a1. The archos is one that I hadn't checked out, though. Man, those first few weeks with my NT before 1.4.1 really spoiled me. I feel like my NT is broken now, and I really like the device.
Acer Iconia A100 4 hours of battery like 70 bucks more
Samsung Galaxy 10 hours 16 gb 150 bucks more
Archos 70B http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/20/archos-launches-70b-honeycomb-tablet-expected-to-ship-next-mont/ has 512 ram and a pro: HDMI for $199
I'm looking at refurbished HTC Evo View's in the area of $250-$280 when they pop up.
Also, Galaxy Tab 7 Plus that can be had for $370 brand new.
Then I missed this GREAT deal today because I was working and not at my computer... Toshiba Thrive 32gb (refurb) for.... $299 arghhhh

I'm thinking about to replace the Tablet with a Color. It's cheaper, $199 new and 149 pre-owned. Both are with 1 year warranty. Since the Color can be dual-booted, so I don't have to root it.

I was in the same boat as you. I had never rooted a device, and I was worried about what rooting entailed in relation to my warranty.
However, I decided to take the plunge anyway. I rooted my NT three days ago, following Indirect's method, and I can say that I am VERY happy with my decision.
Here are some reasons for my joy:
--->I can still access the B&N store, content, and in-store reading abilities (I just tested this tonight).
--->I can load whatever I want onto my device because I have access to root privileges and numerous app stores (Android Market, Amazon, B&N (although who would ever use this horrid marketplace)
--->I have a Swype keyboard on my tablet! (I use this on my phone and I absolutely love it on my NT)
What about the warranty you ask? With the availability of easy unrooting procedures and no instances of bricking a NT, I have confidence that I can always unroot my device if I find the need to use my warranty. Although, the only bad situation that I can imagine is if I somehow damage the device to the point where I cannot boot it up to undo the root (like if I dropped it in a lake or bathtub). Despite those worst case scenarios, I am totally willing to take the risk.
Someone has mentioned elsewhere that the NT is cheaper than other comparable tablets because B&N is counting on controlling the content and user experience to make a profit. By getting around their control by rooting, we (the consumer) are able to have a high quality tablet and the freedom that B&N was counting on restricting for their benefit.
Having said all of this, if you are unable/unwilling/too concerned to root your NT, then return the bad boy.

I 100% agree that the HTC Flyer/View is an amazing tablet. I owned the nook tablet for about 2 weeks until the update came out. Once I realized that B&N is going to continue to actively try and stop hacking I decided it wasn't worth the uphill battle for the life of the NT. I found a brand new Best Buy HTC Flyer on Craigslist for $280, about the same price as the NT after tax.
The HTC Flyer IMO is much snappier than the NT and I like the look and feel of it better than NT. I didn't think I would like the HTC Flyer from reviews, pics, and videos, but in person it is awesome. I really do think it is faster than the NT in general purposes. Battery life and screen are equivalent to NT. Basically, the NT is a little lighter and a little thinner but I think the build quality is better on the Flyer. The dual-core 1.0 GHz vs single-core 1.5 GHz is really a toss up, especially since the NT isn't running HC or ICS yet. HTC just released an official HC update. Also it has a fully active digitizer stylus that destroys the capacitive pens on any other tablet.
Alas, if the NT had the same hacking abilities as the NC, I would have kept it. I really like the NT and I am hoping this community outsmarts B&N. So with that, the HTC Flyer is a solid alternative if you want something similar with full android and no need for rooting.

Just out of curiosity, what did 1.4.1 change that was bad enough to make you want to return it? I have no idea because I rooted mine right after the first boot and removed all the B&N stuff so that it's just a regular android tablet.

I would just like to comment on Archos. I do not own a recent Archos device, but had one of their older media players. The firmware was garbage, the hardware sucked, and the support was non-existent. I bought it on sale from a different retailer, so unfortunately I was unable to return the device. It did have the factory warranty, however. I sent it back to get it fixed three times when the internal hard drive failed. Each time it took a month to get it back, and it broke again within four weeks. The fourth time it died, I gave up and threw the thing away. Horrible waste of money. I will never buy another Archos product again.

That's a shame. I bought an Archos 20gb Jukebox Recorder back in 2002. I replaced the firmware with Rockbox opensource firmware, upgraded the batteries over time, and eventually put a larger HDD in it. It still runs and I use it as an external harddrive. I'd still be using it as my music player except I replaced it with a video iPod with Rockbox software a little while back.

Nook Tablet for 199$ @ebay

Guys there a deal for today at ebay.com for Nook Tablet from B&N that gives it for only 199$
yep.. couldnt refuse at that price point.. they got rid of the coupon.. so just $199 outright.. so saves on taxes if your state requires collecting it.. debated.. but i just cant say no to a deal like that.. loved the original NC.. was a solid piece of kit.. so i know i'll love the tablet..
I would get it as well but I live outside USA so.... :/
I jumped on this too. I've been following various websites for a better price and this is by far the best I've found (without having to do any pricematch/coupon shenanegans).
And the offer runs to Feb 23, apparently. Hope this establishes the new price point !
B&N had to cut prices, Asus memo will be out very soon. And at $250 for a quad-core, with camera, GPS, and BlueTooth, it will eclipse the Nook Tablet and all bargain tablets.
Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't call this a "bargain". NT cannot recognize more than 2 points on the screen at any time, the wifi is buggy at best, the internal memory is almost not accessible. All in all, it's a good ereader. And that's it. The Kindle Fire is a far superior device. My only grip with the KF is that its memory is limited to 8 gigs and no microSD extension possible.

Well I for one am still very happy with mine. The wifi bug isn't that bad, and I have confidence the devs will get it under control. I have no problem accessing ask the space I need, and the battery life is incredible.
Having great dev support is not something to take lightly. The guys working on the NT are doing a great job. My Samsung Fascinate didn't have a usable CM7 until it had been out for almost a year. I wouldn't put it past them to get better multi-touch support for this device as well.
All in all, it's a great device, and the great dev support makes it even better.

Hi couple of questions before i decide to take the plunge
1)Have the devs found out how to use the 12GB space that BN owns
2)How easy is this to root?
thanks!
I ordered it two days ago, can't wait to get it in the mail now.
The B&N - not a good deal at $250?
Oh, come on. There's always something "new" in the horizon - better, faster and cheaper (ie, the Quad Core Asus). And if you wait long enough for the Asus, something *even* better will be "just around the corner".
The B&N is, for me, an*incredible* deal. I own a Galaxy SII, a Motorola Atrix (heavily modded) and I got an iPad 2 at the office. I can't believe how much I got when I bought my Nook for $250. I'd definitely do it again. It's *not* only a good eReader - it's a tremendous game machine (I haven't yet found a single game with any sort of lag), a great browser, a perfect multimedia device... the list goes on and on. IMHO, I'd rather have the Nook than my iPad, it's far, far more useful right now (rooted, with GoLaunch EX and minor tweaks). CM7 will only make things better.
Its problems are trivial. No true multitouch? Why would it be a dealbreaker? Wi-Fi bug? I've seen it every once in a while - my HP laptop is far, far worse. What else is there? Nothing. Again, to me, it delivers far more than I ever expected out of it.
I've seen cheaper tablets around - some chinese junk running at 1.5 GHz (LOL). They look cheap and have no warranties whatsoever. For me, the NT and the KF are what tablets are all about, and I'd rather own either one of them than wait for something that may or may not come out soon (the Asus Quad Core).

Well said i think exactly as you do and not because the a new tablet with more specifications with same or better price is round the corner means the quality will be good and the development for it will be fast, so far with the nook tablet devs have done an amazing job far before than what i ever expected. There is always people that do not appreciate the work that is being done and on top of that they ask for more, unfortunately XDA has got many of those, its a shame.
I think the nook tablet is an investment and i feel very happy with it, i will for sure enjoy it for a while and once another good deal like the NT comes out with decent hardware (not Chinese junk as @fjhuerta say) and green lights for development maybe then i would think in upgrade.

1) yes
2) very easy...check put the development forum and you'll see the one click root. In a few days CM7 will be released in greater fashion than previously. In a month or so the nook tablet and its downfalls will be completely absent. The devs have been incredible with this device and it's only getting better and better. I purchased mine on release day and my love for it grows by the day. I've owned the kindle fire as well...but I did return it because it lacked the ram power of the nook tablet, and I could certainly tell(yes I was rooted on it as well).
Trust your gut. In the long run, I think if you choose the nook tablet, you'll be extremely happy.

take note of the 512mb ram as well so not only is the 8 gig model less storage space...but also down to 512mb system ram. I was hoping they'd keep the 1 gig ram but just lower the 'hdd' shame not :/

From what I have been told a refurbished item could be one that is new, but overstock factory item. Or it could be a repaired item. My concern is you never know what you are getting. I found a refurbished Lenova 10.1 tablet at frys for 249. when new it was close to 500. I was leary, but got it anyway. Installed new rom amd its been great. I have also got a refurbished item and it was junk. I just always get a warranty if possible. Typically though they won't sell refurbished with warranty though. In the end its blind luck. Good luck. what are you looking to get?

Used wifi Xoom is my recommendation. My Xoom is a year old with EOS 2.0.0 running on it (ICS based rom) and its fantastic. Its a solid tablet with probably the most development (as its a GED).
Asus Transformer (the original one) is a decent buy as well, especially if you want the dock. The Acer Iconia A500 isn't bad but I really don't like the form factor on it.

i was looking at this one
Toshiba Thrive 10" 16GB tablet, model AT105-T1016
Toshiba Thrive is cool, but don't expect ICS until the end of June or the beginning of July.
I have 5 tablets, 1 has Honeycomb. Well, I haven't upgraded it to ICS because I didn't even know it had an update
I recommend you the Archos 101 Turbo. My A101 runs stock 4.0 and it's indeed fast in my opinion. It's already at the top of the food chain with Android 4.0 stock, and ROM development will likely start when Jelly Bean (Android 5.0) is released. I have the 250GB version, but you can get something smaller.
I also recommend the Galaxy Tab 2, if you really want Bluetooth.

Well, that is true, but 4.1 might just be a minor upgrade like Eclair (2.1) was to Pre-Eclair (2.0)
Yeah, that's what I figure, too. Also, not trying to hijack this thread or anything, but I'm torn between getting an Eee Pad SL101 or waiting for the MeMO 370T.
A device with model name ME370T passed through the FCC a few weeks ago and ASUS also let it be known that their Nexus Tablet would be shown at Google I/O. I also spoke to an ASUS customer service rep and she claimed Asus would be releasing BOTH the MeMO and the Nexus Tablet this summer, but I can't honestly put too much faith in a customer service representative. I guess I'll just have to wait for more information. I don't know why they're being so shady about it all though.

Or Froyo (2.2) to Gingerbread (2.3), which I wouldn't really say was a minor upgrade. With that said, I don't think there will be any huge leaps and bounds between ICS and the upcoming version, but I'm hoping there will be a single distinguishing feature.
As for the nexus tablet, if it has an sdcard slot + decent form factor (I love the nook's form factor, its not bland like the playbook or fire) then I'll probably sell my nook and grab one.
Don't know if I'll sell the Nook but can't resist the Nexus 7 when it comes out. I just have to get it.
Also thinking of the HP Touch off ebay mainly because of the low cost and they have CM9 nightly.

IS the Nook Tablet worthwhile

Hello folks,
I have a question regarding the Nook tablet. I was making a delivery to a customer this morning and he has a Nook 16GBTablet. We got to talking and he indicated that he was going to sell it since his wife didn't use it. It looks like new physically and I am considering obtaining it for one of my grandsons, basically so I can get my Nook Color with CM7.2 on it back from him. Is the Nook Tablet a worthwhile barter or would something else be better? I bought a Samsung Tab2 7" tablet for a younger grandson a couple of weeks ago and he really likes it, But I don't think I can get a deal like I got for the Samsung. I only gave $169 for it new, still sealed in the box and I doubt I will find another deal like that as I'm pretty sure the fella sold it to me for less than he paid for it. I'm getting off track here, what I need to know is if the Nook Tablet is even a worthwhile Andriod tablet or would I be better off waiting a bit for the new, different brand tablets to come out?
Check swappa.com and see the prices for the tablets. Maybe you get to catch a good deal, I bought my Samsung captivate there and loving it. The nook is worth it in my opinion and the deal breaker is the sdcard slot . Nexus 7 temps me but no sdcard slot no way I buy it, anyways for what I do the nook tablet is enough. Tho I know kids love games and probably that is what they do in their tablets more than anything and the nook does a decent job with kids games, heavy games not that good.
Tablets with Tegra 2 chip is gamers glory and with dual/quad cores is a dream but your budget is not enough.
Good luck!

The nexus 7 is ( in my humble opinion ) the product of the year. The other major producers were surprised and knocked back on their butt. Now they have to answer back with something equal or better. Then there is the argument that it is 'not' just the product but the 'exosphere' along with the product. Lastly, the Nook is a fine performing tablet.
The Nook Tablet, was made to be a reader, but the xda community saw it to having more potential then BN wanted it to. The Nook Tablet has gone far from becoming a full-fledged reader into a usable, 7-inch Android tablet wonder. The Nook was at the bottom along with it's brother in technology, the Kindle Fire, as it was a reader, but it has pushed to the top, and now is one of the most popular tablets out there. I have a Nexus 7 myself, and it is amazing, but was at the top from when it was born. The Nook, and the great devs of this forum, had to work it up there, while BN did not help even once, except for the kernel. We even have our own nearly working kernel, thanks to Rebellos, Chris, and Kuzma. We have succeeded in reaching the latest Google experience, Jelly Bean AKA Android 4.1, and the devs hope to keep working and catching up with Google. As the problems slide off the radar, more devs have appeared. The Nook may not be a Nexus 7, but it sure damn does the job like it.
From what I've heard/read/seen I could make such list of tablets in this class, from best to slighty worse
1) Nexus7
2) Nook Tablet
3) Kindle Fire (note this has got better Android support than NookTab for now <points at Hashcode>)
4) Nook Color
There are for sure others, but I don't know others.
Also, if you want to use it as overpowered Android device someday - get 16GB version, it has got 1GB of RAM, while 8GB ver got 512MB of RAM and it might be not enough for some games, more browser tabs, etc.
Thanks for the opinions.
If I and the owner decide to work out a barter I may do the deal. Cash purchases are not many, but I do quite a bit of bartering and it is a 16GB Tablet. Have a 14 almost 15 year old grandson that could make good use of it I believe. Don't know how savvy he would be to rooting the Nook though he is really good with computers, he fixes all my messups.
When the reboot bug gets squashed expect lovely things coming along.
I get 1.9Mpixel/sec on this test on default clocks.
http://www.ziilabs.com/products/software/mandelmark.php
0.1Mpixel/sec more than Galaxy nexus o.o
Imagine 2x1.2ghz and gpu from 308mhz to 384mhz that can be easily be achieved without any problems as our platform 2.3ES defaults to 1.2ghz.
Is not implemented yet because of the 1st priority is to fix that reboot bug!
Also new drivers for graphic card are release from ti DDK1.9 i guess more speed will be possible also with them implemented

When our developers finish with this board you will have nothing to be jealous from Nexus7.
You would be able to play anything you throw at it
Edit: 2.2 Mpixels/sec on DDK1.9
