I dropped my phone today, and found some sort of cracked glass under my invisible shield.
As the pictures says, the crack is almost unnoticeable if you look at it straight... but if you look at it sideways, you can see the cracked glass.... the SAMOLED is not ruined i dont think, but the glass sure is...
Will the following product be a good replacement for this ? or will the tmobile replace it under warranty? do you guys think they will be able to spot that?
http://www.repairsuniverse.com/samsung-vibrant-t959-lcd-touch-screen-replacement.html
AMOLED displays won't get ruined by a piece of plastic touching it because the whole screen is an array of lights
Another good thing about AMOLED!
About the warranty... I think this depends on the person checking your phone for warranty status. If the employee is doing his job quick, he might not notice the crack. Though if he really checks everything, it will be detected.
The good thing here is that your screen still works... but how is the touch input? Is it distorted around the area of the crack?
I think you should try to repair it; buy the parts online, check out a tutorial, etc.

I couldn't find a lot of replacement parts online. I found some which are just LCD screen and not SAMOLOED according to some forums... this was the only one that says that it is SAMoLED, but there was no reviews or nothing about this website, so i don't know weather its genuinely SAMOLED or not. Any feedback will be appreciated...
I called tmobile and the rep said that there is nothing that they can do about it.
Hey
So I have a question what is the quality of the glass on top?? =/
Today I was walking and i moved aside for someone else to pass through my leg just tapped and i mean TAP!! a normal gentle tap! a table on the side after a while i take out the phone and i see the glass on top is shattered.
I am seriously confused what was the quality of the glass? the phone functions normal everything is fine just the shatter at the top and the ripples .
So apart from the quality can it be replaced since i have no option!! have to give to the service center to fix the yellow tint too hope they take it with the broken glass and all....
so will they?
I wonder if they will fix the yellow tint issue under warranty I don't want the reply "oh you damaged screen so you get yellow tint we no fix without charge" (Believe me the reps sound like this )
But seriously isn't this a quality issue of some sort I mean is the glass supposed to shatter this easily =/
Oh yeah this is my first android phone ever.
SE so had good quality so went for it but then again those were feature phones such as w800i etc
damn... no words
mine got insurance already to avoid such surprises.
call them and ask what can be done, explain the situation maybe they will help you
i wish you all the luck mate
did you remove the screen protector that came with the phone (already put on).
I think that protector prevents cracking....

yeah that is on thats the point i am confused cause of that and lol i think the glass is in place just cause of that screen protector or else it would have come off and you know so yeah be warned fellow member the Sheet does not protect against cracking only holds it in place after it shatters
Sorry for that.....
Next time keep the glass side facing to your leg.

Yeah that's what I have learnt the hard way
On another note could just go on to invent a time machine...(Sorry I get a bit carried away I know )
Quality is offer by Ericsson !
not SONY ! :-D
Sony need get money :-D
And that's why this phone have cheap piece in.
like the screen,or plastic,or battery or. .....
but
I if I'm right the screen is
by Samsung,
not sony(not totally sure)but on the vita yes
In major way sony do nothing,
they just buy and assembly some piece in the phone in china,
under their brand.
Only design and motherboard is sony
It's a pure cheap brand by fan ! :-D
This is not my first phone krkr!
I mean 34
I alway buy Ericsson in the past,
because they do some good
quality phone
but motorola have good quality phone too
(they construct all piece in the phone)
I have a sony ps vita,
and this is the same way,
the screen have spot,tint,line,ect..
If you not agree with me,
go on google and search about this ;-)
I'm surprised that you ignore quality on a phone made in china at low price !
But for me
I like the design of sony they made beautifully phone.
Btw,
Sad for you, hope you can get another phone
This phone is fragile,very fragile!
What do u mean. Quality offered by Ericsson. Have u been smoking? And who told u the screen if the vita is by Samsung. Sony manufactures OLED screens. The display on this phone is by Sony. So is the camera, or u wanna say exmor is by samsung. Even the battery. Dude, get your facts straight.

@kaosdroid don't talk rubbish, anyway this phone was designed while under Sony Ericsson...
to the OP I'm sorry, but that does not look like a gentle tap the point of impact looks like there was some pretty heavy force. Are sure it was from hitting the table? Not that I don't believe you, maybe it hit a weak point in the glass?
I always put the phone in my pocket screen facing inwards (to my leg) which just protects the screen from such damage, good tip
As for replacing under warranty due to the yellowing, I don't know if the digitiser and LED screen are intact as one piece i.e. the glass that shattered isn't the part they replace when repairing the screen problem

to the Sammy troll . Xperia s was made by se as this phone was designed 2 years ago look it up n vita OLED is by Sony n this display is also by sony oh n Sony has good build quality too btw they are known for it worldwide what planet do you live on??? He really must have dopped acid or something
Yeah thats what I am hoping like they are different parts. I duno whatever just hope they are going to be cooperative you know. I swear it was a tap cause se I shuffled to the side between the desks to make way for a guy passing n then on to the path I wasn't running or anything I was in class. But you know what I thought about the weak point how the ripples are made came to the conclusion that the point of impact was the speaker grill if thats what it is just below the Sony logo n that too the very edge of it so talk about bad luck to the max. Just hope it can be replaced n wont cost me an arm n a leg knowing Sony's pricing

To the discussion about who made the screen etc.
It may shock people to know sony have never manfuactured lcd panels themselves, they dont have a fab for it. They used to have a technical partnership / joint venture with samsung electroncs called S-LCD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-LCD)
But when sony brought out the erricson side of the mobile partnership, samsung purchased sony's stake in the displays partnership and then spun off the display arm into a new company (called samsung displays I think).
The new ipads screen is made by samsung
Samsung manufacture small and large lcd's along with there oled lines, they are one of the biggest manufacturers of lcd panels going the other major players are AUO, Hitachi, Lg, NEC/Phillips
Also from samsungs financial report (2010) sony are samsung electronics biggest buyer.
Samsung's largest clients (Q1 2010)
Rank/company Part description Buying (trillion KRW) Percent of total sales
1 Sony DRAM, NAND flash, LCD panels, 1.28 3.7
Edit - Have just had a quick look around on google and it doesn't seem as if anyone has done a bill of materials for it yet (they like pulling ipads apart for this) so unless people have screen part numbers we cant confirm / deny the supplier of the xperia s' screen
Hello, here is my problem:
I bought the phone used (refurbished) from a second hand store. The phone's exterior is is great condition. There is only one problem: The OLED display is terribly burned! Black screen are washed out with heat marks (inverse burns), and coloured screens are burnt.
The phone probably used to be a display phone for an store somewhere. The blue leds are the worst (yes I know what I am talking about), and the green and red ones are okay. I try not to display any images or colors that have more that 30% blue.
I've been ripped off too. The store has a BS no refund policy that they told me after I bought the phone. I can't do an exchange (partially my fault too, because I was afraid they would give me a worse phone!). I had no idea it was burned until I went home and turned it on. I was planning on returning it, but then did some research about the business.. I will never shop there again
I don't want to the phone replaced unless it is a newer model, or better condition than this one (that I have). And I don't want to go to a third party service, unless they actually know what they are doing. The process of removing the screen is time consuming, and very risky. I don't trust anyone but Samsung at the moment.
So.. I have two options:
a) Don't get the phone repaired, and maybe flash a better Rom on it. This will probably ruin my chances of ever getting my phone fixed by Samsung if I am not careful. Short term satisfaction, until the screen dies out (I hate OLED displays for that reason).
Or
b) Pay Samsung to fix or replace my phone. I have contacted them a month ago, and they said that I could get a repair as long as my phone was not rooted. I have no idea how much it should cost (if you know, please tell me!), or, if it is really worth it. Long term satisfaction, a working screen.
And Im not talking little ghosting burns either. My screen is always a greenish yellow tinge. And I cant look at anything without seeing a burned in screen.
And if they flash at&t ics Rom because I am still on GB, then I will root and flash ShoStock 3 instead.
What should I do? What is your experience? And where (and for how much) will Samsung charge for a screen repair? Thanks.
BTW, I live in Canada. It is unlocked.

Any other input? Advice? Similar problems?
This will help everyone who has the "burn in issue". This is a awesome phone (not the best, but still great). I think it is worth keeping.
I tried that link you posted. They say that they are selling a OEM LED screen. I find that funny, since that probably isn't real. Probably just a mistake on their part, great price though (considering the type of screen).

If you are going to replace the screen yourself...and I just did it..not hard at all. Etradesupply.com has the lcd digitizer with front housing for under 120 dollars. It includes capacitive button ribbon as well. Yes this company is in China...but it was recommended by a friend of mine and I am very happy with the product. I replaced my screen very easily. If you go that route it is worth it.

I am happy that you found a replacement screen for your device.
But, how long is it going to last? I am surprised that companies are spending money to make OLED (not LCD) displays for phones that are outdated. This phone is maybe two years old now, and if the screen is this burnt out: Is it really worth it? Do I have to keep replacing my screen every 2 years, or, is Samsung going to admit that their samoled, and other OLED technologies are "not ready for long term use because they die too quickly"?
Of course not, they just want your money!
A OLED works almost the opposite way as a LCD does. A LCD must send MORE power to a pixel that is displaying a dark pixel, while a LED display uses less energy to power a dark pixel. Almost like those old CUT monitors, it uses the additive theory of light, versus the LCD subtracting theory of light.
But they still use three color pigments: Red, Green, and Blue.
Someone who claims they are selling a i777 LCD digitizer with bottom button row is a nut ball, or, are false advertising what they are selling. I seem to be finding this problem with every third-party part company that sells parts for the OLED display.
I wish it had a LCD: It would last so much longer. Less heat, less problems, less stress, cheaper parts, and more confidence.
My verdict:
I don't trust myself enough to replace the parts myself. I ruined my iphone 3gs that way, and don't want to ruin this phone. If the phone was cheaper (I was also ripped off for the phone), then I would be slightly less reluctant to do it myself.
I will look into it some more, thanks fro your help.
Any Samsung screen replacements yet?

Just in this statement you're comparing apples to oranges. There is no comparison,They are not manufactured they same. This device is much much easier to disassemble and reassemble then any I-device. And anyone that has this device, knows that the screen longevity is about two years and that the blues are what burns out the quickest, unfortunately its part of the business world, mass production and cutting overhead.
In my opinion, from just reading your posts you're trying to get a quality device at a minimal cost and now you're going to nickle and dime yourself to death. On top of that, getting aggravated every time you look at your device. Save yourself time, money and aggravation and get a new device...besides.... this one, even though its still a great device and still being supported by great devs is a dinosaur and will in the near future be shelved.
Veni, vidi, vici.
Just my own opinion, but I think they're well aware that their oled displays don't last long. Odds are their thinking is that if your average display lasts between 2-3 years it'll help push you towards another new device. Just something to consider.
I have been looking at the Nexus 4. This phone (I777), is the perfect size phone for me. Not huge, but not small either. I just really hate the OLED. If it were ten years into the future (assuming that the led technology has a longer life span), then I would not be having this problem.
The nexus 4 is slightly bigger than the S2.. I like to buy older phones, because they come at reduced cost. Maybe I will wait for the next nexus to come out, then buy the old or new one.

For those of you who've replaced your screens either DIY or via LG warranty replacement...please post how your screen quality and viewing angles compare to the original LCD.
I'll start...
1. On my Current G2, I had a perfect screen. Perfect viewing angles and excellent image quality with no defects
2. Ebay Replacement screen #1 had dead pixels and Mira lines.
3. Ebay replacement screen # 2 had horrible color. Almost black and white
4. Amazon replacement screen has great color & image quality but lesser degree of viewing angles.
It's hard to explain but easy to compare to other G2s and phones when you compare side by side.
After all these screen swaps in the last couple months I've decided to keep this screen and use the phone as is.
How does your replacement screen compare to the original one?
I got LG performed a "total refurbished" when I dropped and shattered my screen.
It came back and looked like new, no difference to the original.
After a shattered screen i got it replaced.two months waoting time.now have jdi panel but brightness is very low and have lots of screen bleed around the edges.the repairman did not do a good job but the panel itself is of lower quality.color and contrast ok but luminosity is about 70%of the original...not happy but no money for yet another panel...
Conclusion:dont drop the phone...
After having touch screen issues on my phone (no-touch zone, ghost touches), I bought a replacement screen for my D800 off eBay.
Got it replaced and so far, the quality (colours, brightness, touch accuracy) is very good. I'd say the screen is slightly more yellow than my original screen but it's by no means an issue.
The screen I got for my "new" Z3, is full of problems. It has press marks(areas on the screen which appear brighter/whiter) and the screen "flickers" on high brightness. My friend can't see it well, but I can very clearly see the screen going bright->dark->bright->dark slightly and very quickly.
Dropped mine and got it replaced at a cheap place in Bangkok.
Colours are the same, viewing angles are not as good, but
those doesn't matter to me.
Been 2 months dropped phone again, screen shattert again...
Biggest supprise: Touch is still working perfectly! Seems like the cheap replacement screen doesn't have the NoGap technology like the original ones haha. Seems like win win to me!

Thanks for the responses guys and sorry to hear about your screens.
Made a new poll. Please participate.
I'm trying to make a case that there are different versions of LCD panels made by different manufacturers.
They don't advertise which is which but we're starting to notice now that we're having out screens replaced.
I replaced my LG D800 screen with one from Amazon and the colors are slightly darker but other than that no big deal. I didn't do a good job with the replacement so there is definite light bleed on the edges and after four months of using it im getting ghost touches if I press on the lower portion of the screen. Don't think it's quite worth the $80 replacement to try again and get it right, just something I'll deal with until a new phone comes out and I can get it replaced all together.
Similar experience to laboratik except the repair was done at LG so the workmanship is good. But it is jdi panel and darker than the original.
Thank you guys for the responses. This thread should be helpful to others in our same situation.
The sad fact is that the market is flooded with aftermarket screens made by who knows.
Just compared my screen with the S6 Edge and have to say I'm very impressed with the image and color on this replacement screen however that's where the buck stops.
The reduced viewing angles are tolerable at best. I'd hate to remove this replacement screen send it back all over again...roll, dice pray I get a perfect match but unless I'm removing it from a G2 myself I'm starting to believe it's not likely it'll happen.
Check out this review on Amazon re: the screen I have.
This guy nails my current situation

I got a few of them from eBay, I can link you the buyer if you want, I've sold them and they are close to OEM, they only have one MAJOR flaw, they are thicker. While you'd think this wouldn't be an issue, they are thick enough to not be able to slip into most cases, so it's annoying.
http://www.ebay.com/usr/wholesaleblimited?_trksid=p2053788.m1543.l2754
That's the ebay seller I use for replacement parts.
So far the screens have been OEM quality( G2, GPro, AHD) I've bought a few from there, and they all have great quality, except for the thickness, they all seem to be thicker, this is probably due to it not being real gorilla glass, and just a knock off lol.
it looks like my replacement screen for LG service center has slightly lower sunlight legibility than original,
I dont know which panel is this, but brightness is reduced

After removing the Amazon screen and reinstalling the original one, I notice the Amazon one has slightly higher ppi/contrast with a smoother looking picture....WTH
Now if I can have that with the original screen's viewing angles I'd be golden....

I've heard about "crazy touch" issue too so im afraid if im not lucky enough to get one of those. Anyone here have experienced with these full lcd assembly from ebay? I would like to know if all those claim are true or not.
Anyway this is one im talking about - http://www.ebay.com.my/itm/301568732266?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

That one almost certainly looks like it will be a low quality replacement you will be unhappy with.
My personal opinion, if you want a full frame screen replacement....at least get one with the LG logo.
Saw one on ebay for 59.00 last night. The seller claimed to test them before they ship.

My shipment status says expected delivery Wed, Apr 15. Hope there are no more delays. Will keep the thread posted on how the screen performs.
Hi there.
My cousin dropped his phone and completely shattered the front glass. Phone still worked fine though. Went shopping for a replacement LCD+Touch glass part and finally found a shop which charged him about 60 bucks (this included service).
The display is not terrible, but it's definitely a no-brand spare, it's darker, has a blue-ish tint to it and on top of that, it seems to run on a lower resolution. It works fine for looking at memes on social media and stuff, but text and icons look jagged. The system effectively believes it's running untouched at 1080x1920 (checked via "wm size"), but the display itself is pushing less pixels than that.
He can live with that, though, so here comes my question point for discussion: Is there any practical way to measure the actual, physical resolution of this display?
I just thought it would be nice for Android to render everything at this display's native resolution. Jagged edges wont be gone, but I'm pretty sure using appropiate graphics assets and proper density is better than whatever downscaling is happening here.
Regards.
Get a magnifying glass and count the number of physical pixels.
All jokes aside, if you're rooted you can first try figure out what panel you have with "dmesg | grep panel" in terminal.
Other than that you should go back to the store your cousin got the screen repaired and demand an explanation from them and a refund.
Attached is the output I get on my own Z2 which has a OEM display. I didn't need root for this hehe. Lets see what it looks like on his phone next time I meet with him.
I really think requesting a refund is out of the question, it's been a few weeks since the repair took place and service technicians are a PITA to deal with 'round here.
Anyhow, what I'm worried about the most is software updates on the repaired Z2. Chinese knock-off parts are known to stop working or straight out break when treated with non-factory default firmware. It's sitting on 5.1 as we speak.
Update: The replacement display works after an upgrade to M build .291, the phone is now rooted and equiped with TWRP. I'll try to run
Code:
wm size 540x960
and
Code:
wm density 240
on it and see what happens. It could very well be a half-resolution panel, or a FWVGA one, we'll see.
UPDATE #2: The display looks worse after the fact. There's no saving it haha.
you buy a stock dislay from Sony or others?
Are they jagged or actually interlacing? I got a replacement that looked jagged but then I noticed they were actually interlacing which kind of looks like every other pixel is tearing slightly.
That gave it a jagged look. So it may be the right resolution, but just a faulty LCD. I was sent a new screen on request (ebay).
Either way you should get a replacement.
i got some low res display cheap from china. it was horrific resolution.. device also crashed ala bluescreen-of-death, especially when plying blossom blast or watching fb video. i ordered a display from eu on ebay, and now i'm happy again. and so is the device.
Same here and how to make things better
Flash kcal flashable mod and then use these settings R=255
Green=250 blue=245
Saturation =65
Value=135
Contrast =135
Ok turns out he broke the display again. This second replacement actually looks great, there's little difference when compared side-by-side with my Z2. Good thing he's no longer doomed to a bad display haha.

Not sure how this is supposed to help with resolution. Perhaps it would help with the blue tint, but the stock white balance does this as well.

Now that you mention it, that could explain the scanlines effect when looked up close.

Glad to know that. Who is this "eu"? Europe? Lol I'm out of touch here. Glad to know you got a fine display.
I REALLY hope to never ever need to go through display replacement lottery.
Compared to other devices, this Xperia is not hard to repair, and there are cheap spare parts, and quality parts available from a number of EUropean sellers.
Anyway, it's Friday, good to see this forum again, it's really a nice place.
Oh yeah, my daughter after terrorizing me for years finally made me buy her an iPhone, well... I'm waiting for replacement display nr5 for this 5s in a year now. Lol.

Sorry, he bought his display from a brick and mortar store, I have no idea where they get their parts from
