Updating from villain gb to ics - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys well Im a bit confused right now need some advice,Ive been wanting to update to ics from villain 3.0 android gb 2.3.5 was trying to flash a already modded ics rom but I was told that before I could flash any modded ics rom available here I had to update to Ics 4.0. If im on villain 3.0 android 2.3.5 with ninphetamine kernel can I just update it through kies and then root it again? also would like to know chances of hardbricking the device doing these since my last phone was an xperia x10 and as far as I knew if you didnt flash a different radio or play with bootloader the device was unbrickable is it the same with s2?
My phone info is this:
villain rom 3.0 android 2.3.5 gb
Ninphetamine kernel cf rooted
Baseband I9100UMKG2
Model GT-I9100
Thanks a lot

Not really the same thing. Bricking your device may also happen if you have a bad emmc chip and you wipe your device while running a kernel with emmc erase bug.
To update/upgrade to ICS you don't really need to update first through Odin or flash another bootloader, just follow my instructions below:
General steps before flashing a new ROM.
1. Backup your present ROM just incase
1. Wipe data/ factory reset
2. Wipe cache partition
3. Wipe dalvik cache (under advanced)
4. Format /system (under mount)
5. Flash your desired Rom/zips (inn your case, this will be a Samsung based ICS ROM)
6. Fix permissions (under advanced)
Notes:
- If you are moving from from an AOSP ROM to
Samsung (vice versa), perform all the steps
above.
- If you are upgrading / downgrading from one
android version to another e.g ICS to jellybean
or 4.0.3 to 4.0.4, also perform all the steps
above.
- If you are upgrading from a Samsung ROM to
another wipe the same android version, you
may skip step 1.
- if you are upgrading your Aosp/aokp Rom
with another with the same android version e.g
4.0.4 Aosp to 4.0.4 aokp, you may also skip
step 1.
*******Important******
If you are presently running a Samsung based
4.0.4 Rom that is using Samsung based kernel
e.g CF-ROOT or stock kernel, please flash
Siyah kernel before performing any of the above
steps. You will end up with ash unusable
device if you don't adhere to this important
information.

I checked the Rom, is over 290mb and would contain all necessary files.
There is no need for you to install stock ROM first, it should work.
(I'm still using my gingerbread bootloader and I've flashed more than 15 ICS Roms. Presently I'm running jellybean).
I think ninphetamine kernel has CWM recovery.
Just go ahead, follow my instructions in previous post.
All should go on fine.
Clicking on the THANKS button when I've helped keeps me motivated

Thanks a lot again, I'll log into my pc to thank you cause from my phone can't see the thanks button xD , when I flash this rom it says it has siyah kernel, so if it replaces my ninphetamine am I going to lose cw? cause if ninphetamine kernel is the one that has it included its gonna dissapear?
Also recently Ive seen that roms here doesnt mention anything about baseband compatibility anymore, when I flashed my s2 the first time everyone adviced to check if the rom was compatible with your baseband and now no one mentions that in their roms, how come has it become universal or something?

[Q] Kernel Panic with Many ROMs.

I am using SGS2 i9100 and rooted and CWM installed as follows:
1. PC Odin Flash LPB Firmware (ICS 4.0.3).
2. PC Odin Flash CF Root LPB Kernel.
3. Mobile Odin Flash Stock LPB Kernel to remove Yellow triangle.
4. Mobile Odin Flash CF Kernel again to get CWM Recovery as well as root.
So far everything is OK. I can boot to recovery and installed CheckROM v6. Perfect no problems.
Then decided to try MIUI (ICS) when it was released. After complete wipe, ROM installation completed and on reboot > Kernel Panic Upload Mode. Couldn't boot to recovery Just to Download Mode. Had to follow steps 1 to 4 again to get Phone working with root and recovery. Tried a couple of times with MIUI from different sources like miui.us or miuiandroid.com but same result. So back to CheckRom v6 which works without problem.
With recent better ICS ROMs available, tried to install Omega v1.0. Again Kernel Panic Upload Mode. Followed steps 1 to 4 again. Tried Omega 12.0 used by lot of people. Again Kernel Panic Upload Mode. Tried PC Odin Flash of Siyah Kernel. Got the Siyah screen to show on bootup but this remained a while ... ROM did not boot and then screen turned to Kernel Panic Upload Mode after waiting a couple of minutes.
After again doing steps 1 to 4 I am back on CheckROM v6 which works flawlessly.
Why can I not use any rom which tons of users are using? Is there a hardware peculiarity which is preventing this? Should I try out old or new or ICS bootloaders? I don't want to mess with bootloaders as I hear these can hard brick the device.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
PS: My Complete Wipe steps are:
1. Remove user data/Factory reset.
2. Clear Cache
3. Clear Dalvik Cache.
4. Optionally Format system partition in mounts and storage.
The reason is obvious ....Why old LPB???? Stay away.....
Start again from the GB rom better 2.3.5 from odin
Root with cf root and flash any rom what you want from CWM...
No need to change bootloader again...the one you get along with the gb rom is enough further for all
OK I have KE8 (Gingerbread ROM 2.3.3 which is latest for my location) downloaded. Will a PC Odin flash of this remove my current troublesome bootloaders? Or should I download another GB Rom 2.3.5 or newer for PC Odin Flash?
PS: I used LPB assuming that an ICS Rom would give me the bootloaders which would not give me headaches from installing custom ROMs from XDA here. If someone could explain to me where my logic went wrong?
ZACQ8 you called LPB old, but wouldn't it be newer than the 2.3.5 GB ROMs?

you can flash the one which you are having now, but make sure CF-root is available for that to Root and install CWM, for your further flashing of ROMs,
yes that will replace the bootloader, but doesnt matter, it will be ok for all custom roms, (unless some Rom devs insist to replace bootloader first for their Roms)
I told the LPB is the old in the sence, it is old beta release among the ICS versions. Kernel Panic was highly reported while using this version.
Kernel panic Mode is hardly reported when people are coming from GB roms and installing Roms from CWM. that is why I sugested flash a GB rom from ODIN then move to any ROM through CWM.
You can also flash and try latest ICS version from ODIN.
Cool. That's the task for tonight then.
Sent from my GNex on AOKP.
if you are flashing a custom ICS ROM take the LP9 version,
one custom ROM with LP8 version has gaven me once the Kernel Panic
Goodluck
Thanks that worked. Installed Omega 1.0. Downloading Omega 2.1. No kernel panics. So from now the phone shoul dbe trouble fre hopfully.
wen u get prblms instead of keeping on flashing jus stop an ask..
flash stock gb after wipe..
then root properly..
don go for any rcs, beta, alpha root release....
then its a good idea to flash stock ics ...
wen u get a clear pic,u can go for aokp, aosp which will b diff...
bottom line kno some basics instead of jumping far away......cheerz
Looks like I'm in the same situation, I had used odin to flash with I9100_CODE_I9100XXLP2_CL57619_REV02_user_low_ship.tar.md5 back in Jan/Feb and flashed it with CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_LP2-v5.2-CWM5 kernel.
I was then able to flash new ROMS no problem with CWN
Then flashed the other day with the latest Ressurection Remix 2.2 and am getting the dreaded "Kernel Panic...."
So I'm back to the I9100_CODE_I9100XXLP2_CL57619_REV02_user_low_ship ROM.
My plan is to flash it with a 2.3.6 ROM using odin, then apply the CF-Root kernel and from there I'm hoping I can then apply Ressurection Remix ROM.
I'm just a bit unsure of which versions of the ROMS to use, I haven't been able to find a guide to selecting the correct versions for my phone. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Samsung Galaxy S2G (GT-I9100G) insane chip

Hi, beloved developers
I recently try German version ICS 4.0.4 on my S2G. It works done but it wasn't write Arabic so I changed it to Pakistan version 4.0.4 as it read/write Arabic.
I don't wipe data from recovery mode, I just make factory reset before and after installing the "Official Rom" - as I don't try to flash a custom rom till now because I'm afraid from it - from the phone setting.
BUT, I read a topic which made me panic which was about emmc check. I downloaded the program from google play and run it and "Yes, Insane chip" appeared, Then I try XDA tool too and " danger" message appeared.
Now, I can't wipe data from recovery mode and can't flash a custom rom or any thing from RM or what (Safe or not?).
Please, What's the solution?
I want to flash a kernel what is the appropriate kernel to my phone, and Is it break my warranty or not?
Root or unroot my phone? your opinion please?

Thanks .
But what about the first part of the question about insane chip
You don't need to worry about the insane chip if you're completely stock. Wiping/factory reset won't trigger the bug. If you flash a custom kernel, make sure that it has that bug disabled.

Thank you
please correct me if I'm wrong
Can I wipe/factory reset from recovery mode without problems?
If I flash an official rom there is no problem?
What about custom rom?
What will happen if i root my device with this bug? (by the way if I root, I can unroot and phone warrenty is back?)
How can I disable this bug?

1. You can wipe / factory reset in Stock recovery only. You can also wipe your phone by going to Settings > Backup & Reset, instead of booting to Recovery. Nothing bad should happen
2. Yes there is no problem
3. If you want to flash custom ROM, it's better you flash a safe custom kernel first before messing with the phone
4. Nothing bad will happen if you root your device only. However, If you wipe, create or restore backup in CWM recovery while running the Stock 4.0.4 kernel, then your phone will be bricked!
If you want to unroot and claim warranty, it's much better to flash back the stock ROM.
5. The best way to avoid this bug is by doing one of the following.
a. If you want to stay on ICS 4.0.4 stock firmware, then don't use CWM recovery at all!
b. If you want to flash custom ROM or want to you use CWM recovery, then it's better you flash a safe custom kernel first
c. Downgrade to ICS 4.0.3 firmware

Thanks,
I'm sorry for my lots of questions.
- I understand that (CWM) is a custom recovery can be flashed by odin and it delete the original phone recovery mode and this CWM may brick my phone under android 4.0.4.
- I understand that if I wan't to flash a custom rom I should use CWM recovery and to use it I must flash custom kernel but official kernel is dangerous. then I can flash any custom rom and wipe data from CWM recovery.
- Is stock rom is any official rom? or where can I get it?
- I understand that the bug reason is from 4.0.4 kernel and if I downgrade to ICS 4.0.3 the bug will disappear.
- In my Case what is the appropriate kernel to avoid this bug. and appropriate root ?

1. Yes. There are temporary CWM recoveries too, which will not DELETE the stock recovery but overall, you are correct
2. Yes
3. I don't understand this question
4. Yes
5. Read my comprehensive answer below.
After going through All the kernels available for your phone (GT I9100G), these are my conclusions and recommendations
1. All custom kernels available for your phone are not fully compatible with ICS 4.0.4.
If you flash any custom kernel,
- Your phone may/may not boot
-Your bluetooth will not work!
-Only one custom kernel with the above bugs is safe for ICS 4.0.4
2. If you only want to ROOT your phone, visit this thread
Only method 2, is recommended for your phone. You will be safe if you don't wipe, create/restore backup in the temporary CWM recovery. Just follow the instructions
3. If you want to flash custom ROMs and kernels, then you have to first downgrade to ICS 4.0.3 firmware, then ROOT with any method in the link I provided in 2.

You in post # 6 told me if I want to re back my phone warranty I have to flash a stock rom. This stock rom is any official rom or what is it?
So I will re flash ICS 4.0.3 and root my device as you said then I can flash any custom rom to my phone based on any android version 4.0.4 or 4.1.1 with no problems.

i understand your question now.
If you want to totally unroot your device to claim warranty, then visit Sammobile website, download the original firmware for your country, then flash it. This will fully unroot your phone and make it ready for warranty claim.
If you want to unroot only, then you can just flash any stock firmware.
Note: ALWAYS had the rooting method that won't increase your binary counter! This one is very important for warranty claim in future.

"Always USE the rooting method that won't increase your binary counter"
Ok. I'll explain.
1. When you flash any file not signed by Samsung eg Custom kernel or ROM via Odin, it will increase you binary counter ( You will see this binary counter when you boot your device into download mode)
2. If you flash custom kernel/ROMs via CWM recovery, it will not increase the binary counter
3. This binary counter increases as you flash more custom kernels/ROMs via Odin to your phone.
4. When you take/send your phone to Samsung to claim warranty, the first thing the technician will try to check is the binary counter if possible.
5. On GT I9100, It is extremely very easy to reset this counter. with an app.
6. On your phone GT I9100G however, it is very hard to reset the binary counter. I know you can use the USB jig to reset it, but it may not work on new bootloaders which i guess you have already.
These are the reasons why I advised you to Root your phone with method 2 in that Rooting tutorial, which will not increase you binary counter.
Thank you, man
as Samsung till now don't update GT-I9100G with gelly bean. I decided to flash a custom rom
I downgrade as you advised me to ICS 4.0.3 KSA but I still have Insane chip
Now I must flash a CWM to flash the custom rom, It's safe to do this now as I will wipe data from it (CWM)
1-What is the appropriate CWM to my phone? and how can I flash it Via odin or Via Recovery mode?
2-I'm living in KSA which rom i choose [JB][4.2.1] CyanogenMod 10.1 official nightlies or [JB 4.1.2][PA2.55][AOKP-ML1][CM10]P.A.C True All in 1 ROM? as I need mobile to read and write arabic without any external applications.
3- I had a problem "my phone is always open but when some one try to call me it say mobile is closed" Is that from the rom cause of different modem in rom or how can i fix this (this problem not from the carrier as i try the sim in Nokia mobile and worked fine).
pls help?
i am little bit confused if i downgrade my i9100g from jb to ics or back to stock rom from custom rom should i flash the kernel for ics?pls help.thanks in advance.

[Q] Need help with rooting [official ICS 4.0.3][UCLE5]

Hello guys, So I'm fairly new to rooting (first android/smartphone/ but good experience with PCs) and was wondering if anyone could help me out. I'm using the ICS 4.0.3 build from kies, with the UCLE5, and build number IML74k.CLE5.
*from reading the stickies I've learned to NOT use ROM manager, galaxys2root.com, and to not use the STOCK ICS method as it has a brickbug ( the ones on forum)
Last night I tried rooting my phone by using Doomlord's guide but it didn't work ( I had unknown sources, and USB debugging on*but my phone was on and not on download mode or anything* )
Then I tried SuperOneClick root and it was just stuck on one of the steps, and the only way to stop it was to end task the program and ADP...any tips on what I'm doing wrong? Sorry for being a nub lol
*please move to Q and Q accidently posted in general section
Just use Odin to flash any ics kernel u want.
so I guess Ill try to flash using step 3. on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285894 using ODIN3, then install a kernel ( i want to use 3.3d Siyah ) and then flash a custom ROM (like semi_v17) *the guide from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650948 correct?
I also want to add that after i Root using 2c.) How to root by flashing Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock, Kernel + Rooted System Package with Modem using Odin3 One-Click Downloader (Windows) that method, I boot into 3E recovery and perform data/factory wipe, wipe cache, dalvik and reset extweaks profiles...then install semi_v17 ROM while in recovery mode and done? Just making sure before I do anything with my phone
I know that relying on the sticky posts leaves some confusion because of Gingerbread and ICS versions. The Entropy512 stock plus root is a Gingerbread firmware with stock kernel and root. If you go that route, you then need to install a Gingerbread custom kernel, and then you can flash Semi from ClockworkMod Recovery if that is what you want.
In my opinion, since you are already on UCLE5 stock, the best route would be to flash the UCLE5 stock plus root package that you can download from the development section, and then install a custom ICS kernel. I know you were trying to avoid the Emmc Superbrick Bug, but since you have stock UCLE5 with the stock kernel on the phone now, you already (supposedly) have the Emmc Superbrick Bug present in the stock kernel. All the instructions needed to install a custom kernel are contained in the OP of the UCLE5 stock plus root thread.
If you have additional questions, just ask.

So I flash the build from this [Heimdall][Odin][Stock][Root]UCLE5 Stock ICS with Root..(no need to flash according to thread)
pick one of the the three kernels (prob going with AJ siyad) and install using Odin lite..then ROM? (like Semi v17?) it gets confusing at some parts cause on the Stock ICS + root section is says to wipe before flashing if coming from another base (im guessing since im on the UCLE5 base i dont need too)

Yeah just use mobild odin to flash a kernel and then boot into recovery then wipe then flash semi. I really wish we could update those stickies. They are pretty confusing
One last question...sorry for being a complete noob lmao after I get the kernel, I boot into CWM recovery wipe...and use mobile odin to flash semi?

Yeah, all good but, have you read this?
Is your device a GT I9100? Are you on 4.0.4? Got the brick bug? You know siyah is a safe kernel?

The thing is where you're flashing from.
And yes, only 4.0.4's kernel's dangerous.

If you want to go from stock ICS to stock JB you have no need to root.
All you do is simply reboot into download mode (Power on using Volume Up + Home + Power) then flash the JB md5 file via ODIN.
Once you have flashed the file you may find system wont boot into rom (this is normal). Just reboot into download mode and flash latest version of Siyah kernel (.tar file) which will be Siyah v6 beta4 (or above). This will give you cwm recovery, better battery life, root access, SU etc.
Go and have a look at some topics/search etc, All the info you need is already on here and if you try and take some shortcuts you may run into problems or even possibly brick your device so take some time and learn.
PS. Yes the eMMc brick bug is part of stock 4.0.4 kernel so just dont go into stock recovery. You can also brick device by your flash process getting interrupted so make sure you have drivers installed correctly (install kies) and taht you're not running any other programs while flashing and also that you have at least 55% battery.
It's a very good thing you are reading before getting the bad boy you intend to flash.
See the thing about this bug is when you make a back up, wipe things up from the recovery, and flash via oding. Once you do the wipes, you are kinda screwed.
Now, you got a couple of choices here:
1) Your device arrives with 4.0.4 ICS, flash siyah kernel (I'll get you off the hook).
2) Arrives with 4.0.3, you are good to go, no danger.
3) You can try mobile odin, it flashes with its own kernel and, apart from being fast, it's easy.
4) If you get a gingerbread version, you good as well.
That being said, I'd advice you to play with it for a couple of days instead of flashing right away.
Check out some videos, read something about ExynosAbuse (It'll get you rooted with one click) and revolv around the q&a section looking for "not to do list".
good luck and remember, keep on reading.

Thanks a lot for all your help
the ressurection remix rom i downloaded came as zip file.I can flash it from cwm itself right?
and regarding the kernel im a bit confused between siyah and dorimanx .I know it depends on phone but what would u suggest?ur personal choice
and i need one more help.I need a vanilla jb rom.Not too much bloatware and with less bugs as possible and tweaked for performance and battery. The problem is net speed is very very low...trust me..i cannot try most of them unless i wait for weeks. So if anyone can suggest i can download that alone and do

[Q] CyanogenMod

Hello people
I recently tried installing CyanogenMod 10 on my intl Galaxy Player 5.0.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2077671
Some things about my phone:
I recently rooted it and i am able to enter download or recovery mode, i have the intl model and im currently running:
This ROM:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1623529
And this KERNEL:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1414565
Everytime i get an assert failed error (yes formatting does not help.....) and when installing the kernel within the thread i bricked my phone....
I was able to recover it but i dont wanna brick my phone again so any help and/or detailted instructions how to get that rom installed would be appreciated.
When i was trying to flash, thought it was with Odin. My programme crashed upon NaNDwrite....
Thanks in advance, hope someone can help me out!

Umm, if I'm understanding correctly, you installed the ROM- CM10, that is- and/or kernel via Odin. CM10 and the Mercurius kernel are zip files (.tar, .pit and the like are for Odin, not zips...if I understood correctly).
You want to place the ROM and the GAPPS zips on your actual SD card. Make sure the SD card is working properly. Reset and go to CWM (Power+Vol up).
Then, accd to the instructions on the CM10 page:
"Installation:
Reboot to CWM
Make a Nandroid (optional, but recommended)
Format /system if you had a different GApps package installed
Install ROM
Install GAPPS if you just formatted /system
Wipe data/factory reset if you are coming from Gingerbread
Reboot
??? (wait a while...)
Profit"
I'd say make a backup before doing any of this, but I'm assuming you're beyond that point....But before going on to CM10, it might be a good idea to recover your device first and back it up. Maybe flash a GB rom via CWM or Odin before proceeding to CM10, making a backup just in case...
Ok

Just flash CM10 kernel zip
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2109674
from CWM5 and then reboot CMW and you will have CWM6..then just install CM10 rom.

would he have to flash the kernel first, though? I'm unfamiliar with rjs, but am assuming that rjs version of CWM would be identical to entropys version of CWM, which means that he could just flash the CM10 ROM since it has the kernel baked in.
When I upgraded from Chip -> CM10, I just flashed via CWM, upgrading both the ROM and CWM in the process.

I remember Dkonzig mentioning this, that the path to JB was through ICS, but for my US device, I just flashed directly to GB. I remember another Int'l GB user who flashed directly to JB and was fine. this is peculiar.
so two methods to choose from, I suppose.
