Rooted SG3 no updates available? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I have an SG3 unlocked and I rooted it. Baseband I9300XXLF5, Build IMM76D.I9300XXALF6
I haven't received any update and from Kies it show no firmware update availabel. Is it because I have a rooted device?
I checked in SamMobile but I don't understand which firmare or how I should download.
Alex

You can search firmwares by country/region.

I am also a bit confused with the number of firmware out there and wondering which is the latest. The only thing I know is the leaked JB firmware XXDLH4 > XXDLH6 and now the XXDLH7. Its easy to see which is newer but on the original firmware, so many different code and its just confusing

Regarding firmware based on region, I am from Blackberry. Its often ok or should I say OK to download firmware from other service provider as long the phone is the same model. Sometimes, your region or provider may not update their firmware so installing other provider's / region's firmware will actually be better. Some regions just seems to update their firmware much faster than others and providing improvements and fixes faster than others.

Odin Flash FAILS with ITV file (lates Italian firmware). I use md5 file on CSC via Odin.
I will try using the Britain file.
Now that I am rooted of I need to update when JB comes out do I need to unroot?
The unroot process I've seen on YouTube imply a total wipe of the phone. A real hassle.
Any alternative?

Firmware is PDA not CSC.
Dev section Chainfires CF Root no wipe.

"US" XXgxx firmware. What's "US" in it? Yes you can use firmwares from other regions. I am using Lg9 right now from singapore in india. The only disadvantage I see is that India is not listed under country list in yahoo news. This would apply to european builds too.
XX - european, DX - Singapore region, DD - Indian subcontinent.

OTA or KIES updates depend upon the phone codes you present to the server and also the firmware for those codes actually uploaded to the server .
Your phone latest firmware is LFB that's the reality other providers may have older or newer firmware .
JB probability is Europe first but thats just a guess until its released .
You want to use US firmware please be aware and read the sticky at the top of the page that flashing firmware for a US phone that is not Internationale I9300 will brick your phone .

[Q] Unlocked Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi guys, just a generic question. What does it mean when the phone is unlocked? I got an unlocked Galaxy S III I9300 and I'm using it on US T-Mobile. Curiously, the phone came with a lot of German T-Mobile bloatware. Are all I9300 not the same? Is it possible to make it completely carrier free? Please enlighten me
It means its not locked to a network .
Branded means its branded by a carrier/network.provider .
Flashing stock rom will remove the branding .
jje
Thanks for the info. Is there a way to update to the stock rom officially through kies or something? And I'm just wondering, are there any carriers in Europe that use stock rom?
Thanks

If you do it through KIES, it will keep all the branding, because it will update the ROM for the same CSC (operator-specific firmware) you have.
You need to first install, using Odin or MobileODIN, an unbranded firmware. All countries have branded and unbranded firmwares.
For instance, an UK unbranded ROM can be downloaded like this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28367295#post28367295
There are unbranded ROMs for all European countries. Use CheckFus to figure out what their CSC code is.
Thanks. So after i flash an unbranded firmware i can get the unbranded rom updates? And it won't wipe my phone right. Does samsung sell the I9300 with unbranded firmware and rom anywhere in Europe? Personally got mine on Amazon.

- It won't wipe your phone, UNLESS you tell it to.
- There aren't that many OTA updates anyway, so don't worry about it. Besides, when an update is released, you can install it on your phone using the Odin or MobileOdin methods long before it is available on the OTA. None of these require you to wipe your phone.
to use Odin you don't need root, but you do if you want to use mobileOdin.
I've flashed over 20 stock unbranded ROMs on my S III and I never did a data wipe on it, and yet it works flawlessly.
Using the top-right panel of CheckFus, you can download ANY CSC you want as long as it is for the GT-I9300. You don't have to keep it locked to a specific CSC. For Germany I believe the unbranded CSC is coded DBT (or something like that).
Hey, thanks for the info. The website for Checkfus Downloader isn't working. Do you have a link to it or can you post it here? From what I've read, CHANGING the CSC will wipe the phone right. Is there any reason for me to change the CSC to UK or something? I don't really care if the default language is German as long as I can change it to English. I just want to get rid of the bloatware and get an unbranded firmware/rom.
EDIT: Found the firmware on SamMobile. Thanks for the DBT tip.
http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=8&view=6505
I just want to confirm flashing that won't wipe my phone? Because the CSC is different isn't it?
EDIT 2: Read your post again. So flashing the firmware won't actually change the CSC right. I just won't be able to keep the unbranded rom if I update via KIES?

-Ok, so. Basically I can flash any unbranded firmware I want (UK, German, etc...) regardless of the CSC.
-I just have to use Odin everytime I want to update.
-Also, will I lose the unlock?
-Will there be issues with the modem/baseband/CSC incompatibility or something.
P.S. I keep asking if Odin will wipe my phone because I used to own a Galaxy S 1, and Odin was basically the last resort to flash your phone back to stock, and it was always a wipe.
Thank you.
I have a galaxy s 3 which was given to me as a gift. It was on orange, but was unlocked for me so that I can use it on o2.
I have no idea how it was unlocked, but im unsure about upgrading the software through kies.
Can I still upgrade my software through kies to the latest jellybean? Because ive been waiting for the upgrade on my phone and it still hasnt come up. infact i dont have the option to check for updates either
what shall i do? I dont know if ill lose my data or block my phone by upgrading to jellybean via kies
help please
Your phone maybe unlocked but have the same carrier firmware. You need to flash via Odin a unbranded firmware, as if you do update by kies it may lock your phone again.

How to flash OTA flash files downloaded from samfirmware?

Hi all
How should I flash the OTA flash files downloaded from Samfirmware?? Should I use ADB?? If yes, can anyone tell me the commands??

If you are talking about OTA and not the full firmware..it has to be flashed in stock recovery...first make sure you have the correct firmware version on your phone..the firmware version required will be given alongside the OTA on samfirmware..now move the OTA to your sdcard..reboot into stock recovery..use vol up+power+home buttons..then choose install update from there..
I need to do this. I'll do a Titanium Backup before, but should I expect all my content, apps, preferences and all that to be intact after the procedure (presuming everything goes the way it should)?
Edit: Also, why can't I see an option for United States in the drop-down menu when narrowing down my device? Should I use some other country?

And do you know what this ota files are used for? I've an S5830 from Vodafone(Spain) and I want to get it back to the original firm (you know, operator apps and some more innecesary ****), but I'm unable to find one on the internet.

If your phone is network locked you will need to search elsewhere for your career specific version. These are unbranded roms just ensure you change the cschool to your correct region. Apparently it does not void warranty if you sent your device back with a stock unbranded Rom but you will be doing so at you own risk. You will also need to check that your flashcounter is set to 0 (search xda for full tutorials regarding this) all of the above is what I have found but may not be the full instructions follow so therefore please do your research first. I cannot be held responsible for anything that may go wrong. I hope I have been of some help.

My apologies that should be ''csc''. I wrote that post from my phone and did not notice that predictive text must have changed that.
If you go to http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-I9300 and find the last DBT release (CSC for Germany) and download that.
Please bare in mind that DBT is the unbranded csc if your device was originally carrier locked you may need to flash that for example the csc for t-mobile germany is DTM.
If you hover the mouse over each csc on this page it will tell you the country and carrier

[Q] Change CSC, to get fresh updates - unbranded phone

Hi all,
I recently bought a Galaxy S3 I9300 International through a coupon (like groupon) and they sent me a Phone with CSC "COA" (cosmote, Romania)
Iinstalled my Italian sim without any issue, so i think the phone is unlocked or similar.
I noticed that the phone has the firmware XXEMC2 (March 2013?) and i want to install all new updates... but i think that Romania doesn't update regularly the official firmware (i don't see custom icons for the romanian firmware)
Is it advisable to flash the Italian Firmware (maybe the latest XXEMF6, or the actual XXEMC2), and change the CSC code to ITV to get newer updates soon?
Or i'm approaching to an unnecessary procedure that may brick my phone (or voiding the warranty?)
Thanks in advance!
Having the right CSC and unmodified status will allow you receive OTA updates, which will probably be six months behind those posted on xda.
Go to sammobile and download the latest rom for the country where you will be using the phone, flash using odin on your pc. This gives you the right modem and won't brick your phone.
Thanks for the reply.
Now i'm downloading the latest ITV firmware I9300XXEMG4_I9300ITVEMG2_ITV.zip from the site you specified (seems to be the one that Kies tries to install, since it has the icon highlighted.
Then, i need to flash the firmware twice in order to change the CSC Code, right?
Do i need to do other task, in order to have the "unmodified" status ?

Best go read the stickies in general before you flash anything, your logic on updating seems confused. The CSC code makes almost no difference to how you use the phone.

No, the firmware is irrelevant to the carrier. Only simlock is carrier specific, if your sim works then you can use any firmware.

I think i'm confused now
That's my noob point of view:
I unboxed the phone and installed my sim without any issue, so i think it's not simlocked.
I think that the Cosmote - Romania carrier (CSC "COA") doesn't release updates often (I don't see firmware XXEMF6 or the latest XXEMG4 (/efs issue apart)
I'm sticky with stock/original/samsung firmware XXEMC2 (march 2013)
if i flash the exact revision, but ITV, (since i'm italian) Firmware i can obtain all the fresh, unbranded, updates.
now... i don't know exactly the roll-out date policy for every firmware /country, and if any carrirer can/has to "customize" a firmware in order to release (with a delay, of course) And/Or if it's interested to release an update.
What i'm thinking now is "nice. an update... let's install." but i want to be more-than-sure that this simple procedure won't brick my phone.
Please be patient with me.

Anytime you flash anything you Risk bricking your phone and or voiding your warranty. The. Only official procedures for updating your firmware are kies and ota updates.
allright.. i flashed the ITV firmware adn it went OK
but now i see the correct CSC, and Kies says that my phone doesn't support updates.
I correctly flashed a second time, but with no result.
Any tips?
You can still update your firmware with kies. To do so you need to manually input model and serial numbers . also you have to put phone in download mode before connecting to computer.

i did this procedure (i told to Kies my model and S/N ) to factory reset the phone and Kies downloaded a Firmware.
it downloaded I9300XXEMC2 (the same) but with CSC I9300QXFEMA2 :silly:
Now my phone has a UGLY splash boot of "La Fleur" carrier!
Before this madness i had a, as far i know, a International S3 (CSC EMC1 (COA))... now i have a branded Phone!
(though my sim still works without issues)
What the hell has happened?
If you want ota updates or want to update by using kies than stay with this firmware. If you want the newest unbranded firmwares than flash with Odin any firmware you like that is compatible with I 9300. Make sure CSC matches your region. The lafleur screen is the boot animation which can be replaced manually if you root. You may be able to change csc with CSC changer app. Probably need root for that too. You can always reflash the firmware update you initially flashed and were happy with. Whatever kies gives you is what the phone was programmed initially for your phone. I think. I prefer to use sammobile and Odin as you can get more current firmwares
if you want to customize your phone by changing csc or flashing firmwares even official firmwares than do not use kies or ota for updating for updating. also since customization always risky it is best to back up your EFS. this too requires Root. PLEASE READ THE STICKIES . and the FAQs . before you proceed with flashing anything else. Right now your phone is official and upgradeable through kies.If you are not happy with what samsung gives you than I suggest you ROOT
