Motorola is actually doing something for their customers? I'm shocked. Depending on what kind of phones they announce, this may be cool. A lot of people will probably not want to stick with Motorola though.
EDIT: The Droid Razr M actually doesnt look that bad.
i want to see this happen, but i'm sure there is a way to screw over x2 users...maybe if they did though the wife would get the razr m
we'll see though
I just saw this and almost cheered during class lol.

Droid X2 was released May of 2011.
It would be amazing if we got Jelly Bean. That could open a lot of doors for us. (CM10 and all JB Roms due to an updated Kernel).
The $100 is kind of a lame incentive if we don't get the JB update. Who's really going to get another Moto phone? Show of hands please?

A 100.00 credit is what u will get the x2 was lucky to get official 2.3.5...if you have unlimited 3g and want to keep it you can't upgrade to a 4g phone so the 100.00 credit is useless. If you wanna loose the unlimited 3g then its a 100.00 credit and a switch to a laughable shared data plan...so either way your screwed...vzw and moto likely planned it out together

Let's see the details. I don't trust them at all. WE will see if it makes any impact. Motorola is still cow-towing to Verizon on locked boot loaders and installing root detectors. So I'm betting its nothing but a PR gimick.
Oh ,gee thanks MOTO> I got a X2 in OCt.. 2011 and you dropped support for it 6 months later, so now I can buy another Moto from Verizon for $650 and you will give me $100 . Big woop. you screwed me once, never again..........
Just my $0.02 US - I think if Google were to publicly acknowledge the work done by the various rom devs here at XDA and elsewhere, and especially, the cyanogen Mod Team, in advancing the capabilites of the Android OS, it would put a big crinkle in Verizon/Sprint/AT&T's propaganda about not wanting to unlock bootloaders and the bloatware the carriers put on the phones.
As another poster upthread put it, why put it on the phones if nobody is gonna use it and not contribute to the carrier's coffers? Give us a OEM interface but leave the crapware off and unlock the bootloaders if you want to sell more phones!
One thing Steve Jobs hated about Android is the ability to customize the OS. I say we stick it to Apple and continue to customize our phones to OUR liking!

My question still is: Is it just that the bootloader is that big of a pain in the arse, or does 850 dollars really not entice the right people..? lol

I have to agree with this list. Although I don't think the x1 down will receive ICS to push users to get newer devices.
It better also come with an unlocked bootloader IF we get ICS!

True, very true. But, to have an official ICS means possibly that Dragonzkiller and company can REALLY go to town on CM9 for the X2!
Motorola better not stiff us on ICS like they did the boot loaders.
But, the X2 will still be my final Moto device since they lied to us about the boot loaders and have not returned a single email I've sent. And I've been cordial and tactful. No hate, no cussing, no name-calling; very business-like but frank and to the point.

The official Motorola list has the DX2 as under evaluation for ICS which may be the same as never. My hope is that ICS is more profitable to Google for some reason so they would push Moto to update more phones. Even if it only makes it to a QA server and gets leaked out I would be happy.

X2 is not listed as NOT getting ICS. The article states:
The Droid 2, Defy, and Droid X don't appear to have made it to evaluation and planning considerations, but instead are listed alongside the most recent upgrade currently available (2.2 or 2.3).

If you look at the actual Motorola page, the X2 is listed as in the evaluation and planning stage whereas before it was shown as having received the 2.3.4 upgrade. This doesn't guarantee an ICS upgrade, but it also doesn't rule it out of consideration like the Droid 2, Defy and Droid X appear to have been.
Just wanted to clear that up. I'm still waiting to hear back from Motorola and/or see what actions they take, but HTC is definitely the way I'm going. They just announced MORE phones that they are adding to their bootloader unlocking program.

I've been a user of many motorola products for YEARS.
this statement means "we have abandoned this device, but the first ones are still under warranty so we have to say this"
their software engineers need to all die in a fire, they've let me down in this regard numerous times over the years
however, I have NEVER had ANYTHING motorola fail on me hardware wise, well aside from the touchscreen on my MW-520 mobile computer, but it got hit by some untethered cargo during a 45mph side-impact collision, and it still fn worked, it was just cracked.
that's the ONLY reason I won't go HTC, never had ANYTHING HTC last longer than 90 days without having some kind of hardware problem, and I've had half a dozen different ones (probably 2 dozen if you count all the warranty replacements)
Today I had my very first service/call quality issue ever, I ended up reporting an outage/interference in downtown Denver cause it was only in a 2 block area. Strange thing was my co-worker who is a sprint customer had the exact same issues on a completely different phone, and they both worked fine there yesterday.
My wife got the Droid Razr on launch day in November and she has gotten 3 updates since then. I have had my X2 since July and have only gotten 2 updates. This is ridiculous. Even Apple put out updates for my 2nd Gen Ipod touch for 2 years after I bought it. This will not make me leave Android though. But I will leave Motorola. HTC is doing a great job unlocking there phones for power users if they are unsatisfied with the way their phones currently run. And that's where I'm headed. The HTC Rezound has several ICS roms already and that impresses me because that's the phone that I'm probably going to get. Sorry for the rant. I just needed to say something about this.

For me it's not about getting ICS, it's about updates that fix the problems with this phone. Sure, I want ICS but I would be satisfied with regular GB updates. I understand that it will take awhile for us to get ICS since they have so many phones out there. Not knowing whether or not they have ended support for the X2 is what's frustrating.

I wish Motorola would just forgo ICS and just work on a JB ROM for the Photon since we have to wait for Q4 release anyways. I wouldn't mind if it didn't get released until Nov/Dec if that is what it took. I would love to use Google Now and new voice feature.

1. Can we stop hating on Motorola? Our phones are made by Motorola Mobility, which is now a part of Google. I think Google deserves a fair share of blame for capable Motorola phones not being updated with/shortly after the Nexus line. Nexus is third-party anyway. N1 was HTC, next one was either HTC or Samsung, GNex is Samsung, and N7 is Asus. First-party is the Droid line and anything else by Motorola.
2. JB should be CM10; KLP should be CM11. J is the 10th letter of the alphabet; I the 9th. CM hasn't done .n releases for major revisions of Android arbitrarily considered to be minor. CM7.2 is still Gingerbread. There is no CM8 AFAIK because that number is reserved for Honeycomb. (Maybe there is a CM8 based on HC and I'm simply misinformed. But I haven't heard of it.)
3. I don't trust Google/Motorola Mobility to upgrade us Electrify owners to anything. I do believe Photon will get ICS by the end of the year, if not sooner.
4. "Why don't they skip ICS?" Your Money. They know you... or rather the uninformed masses... will buy an ICS phone to replace their GB phone, then a JB phone to replace that.
5. There is no new Play Store. You may have heard about a new Play storefront that removes reflections. It's all server side; you have it already.

Well if Motorola is truly working on a new LTE phone for Sprint then I doubt Sprint would entertain the JB ROM idea for the Photon 4G. Depending on when the phone is going to be released, they might target the new LTE phone to have Jelly Bean especially if the phone won't launch until October/November.

It is unsure at this point.
From the link in the OP.
All with nary a word from The Now Network, which is usually pretty on top of announcing updates for devices. Ergo, at this point, we're not entirely sure if this is the start of a full-on rollout or just a "soak test" of sorts. We're thinking the former, but until official word is muttered from the lips of Sprint, it's a crapshoot.

From having previous experience with Att and Android it could still be a while. Att gets in no hurry for updates. I don't know what is involved with their testing of new firmware but it's ridiculous.

I think the testing isn't what kills it... I think att doesn't test at all half the time. What do they have to lose if we don't get updates. People rarely get mad at carriers when the manufacturer can be blamed.
It would not surprise me find out att won't push the update because it says "lg" at the top of the phone instead of "att"

and why incur the cost, if there's virtually no recourse for not releasing the updated OS. But if that's going to be the case, have the manufacturer release the upgrades, requiring that their own crapware is included in the release.

Guys, you've got to remember that us, the people on XDA, arent the majority. Most people don't know what jellybean is and if they do they couldn't tell you the difference in jelly bean and ICS. AT&T knows this so they don't bother with updates, they're lazy and couldn't care less about the minority. Honestly, i don't think any of the people who handle the updates at AT&T know whats new in jellybean. Maybe they should hire some xda devs to handle their updates haha

Heck, with how well this phone runs on ICS, aside from getting Google Now I'm still not entirely clear on what the JB ROMs we have give us, and I generally pay attention to these things...

I completely agree, I'm honestly kinda scared that the jellybean update could make the experience worse, at least an official update. This is the best phone I've ever used, even with ICS and little rom support. We've got great devs and even the stock experience isnt bad. Plus, google now is cool but I'm happy with this phone as is, I've got my nexus 7 for that haha
I had CM10.1 on my last phone, I really don't feel like I'm missing anything significant at all with rooted stock ics on this phone...

I'm happy with rooted stock as well, except that I am hoping for a reduction in the excessive msm_hsic_host wakelocks that drain our batteries (seems this was fixed on the Nexus 4).

It's quite a bit faster on jellybean and has Google now and a different font and a better modem.

does this means that a dev could get the update rom from sprint and port it to att? or are the phones too much dissimilar to do that?
We have jelly bean already. I am running the version found in the developer section and I love it

I've been on SnowJB for a while now. It's still about the principle. Sprint released jb, even if it is just a soak test. AT&T is usually the last to get out updates for devices that have been released on multiple carriers. From my experience and research it is usually T-Mobile first, Sprint second, and ATT/Verizon tied for last.

No update anytime soon. Trust me. Att wants you to buy new hardware. (Lgog pro)
They make money buy getting new contracts. After new og hits we get jb. I had HTC vivid there was no ICS till onex was out

Which version of the LGOG sold world wide is closest to ours?
i'm used to the One X and Rogers&At&T being identical.

That makes no sense because everyone who bought a LGOG shouldn't be anywhere close to getting another two-year contract. The LGOG is only 5 months old.

Definitely. I'd like to see things out faster, too, but you hear a lot of pure speculation and conspiracy theories around here.
