[Q] Problems updating rooted S3 to latest firmware (I9300XXBLH3) - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
Samsung recently released firmware update PDA: I9300XXBLH3, CSC: I9300DBTBLH4, Version: 4.0.4, Date: 2012-08-24.
My S3 is rooted and encrypted. I had to decrypt it before I could downloading the update. Now I hit the update button and my S3 rebooted into CWM, telling me
Code:
E: Invalid command argument
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Install Untrusted Package? Yes / No.
If I hit Yes CWM shows me robot with a red triangle and some text:
Code:
Installing update...
assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") == "m0" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "m0"
E: Error in /cache/fota/update.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
I was able to reboot my S3 the usual way afterwards.
How can I solve that problem and update to the new firmware?
Thanks in advance!

guess that you are trying to update via OTA on rooted firmware ???
As per the instructions OTA fails on root phones .
Update firmware via KIES .
jje

I see. Okay. I will do so.
Do I have afterwards to re-root my device? And can I keep my apps & data due to unrooting it again?

Always recommended to backup your apps and data. After update via kies, you need to reroot you phone.

Okey. Thank you people for the quick response.

Just open the updater script using notepad ++ and delete those two lines.. Save the script.. And then flash
By the way I am typing from my phone.. So expect typos!!

@zoot1: In the meantime I tried it updating using KIES with success. It was a long procedure.
Is your method save for updating deleting these two lines?

If you are using the correct firmware with the correct device than it should be safe.. I once had faced the same assert checks fail on me.. Deleted those 2 line and updated successfully..

Check out the OP on the thread for the AOSP version of jelly bean. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1765254
It says you need to update your recovery to a certain version. That is said to stop the assert 7 issue you are having.

Hi,
I'm new to this forum and thisis my first post with a rather serious Problem:
I tried to flash my GalaxyTab P7500 as described here in post #80 using Mobile Odin. Problem is, the tab did not restart but has been stuck for an hour with the attached screen. It does not react to anything, not even the power button.
Any ideas what went wrong and what I could do?
Greets,
selcall
Edit: stupid me, didn't press power off long enough. Seems to work, although it should have rebooted by itself!
the first time I tried to install CM10 I've got the same same system error.
you have to use the cwm version 5.5.0.4
you can found it on DROID basement website.
edit:
link for cwm
http://droidbasement.com/db-blog/?p=2668
flash via Odin and the flashing of cm should work fine.

Is 5.5.0.4 REQUIRED for CM10 to flash properly? Or will any version over and above but inclusive of 5.5.0.4 work? (I'm on 5.8.3.1 for example, flashed via Rom Manager...)

Can't Flash CM9

I flashed back to stock AT&T, rooted, added Superuser, installed CWM, downloaded the CM9 stable zip from their site, put it on SD (tried internal and external, not that it should make any difference...), and keep getting this:
Installing: /sdcard/cm-9.0.0-quincyatt.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") == "SGH-I717" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "SGH-I717" || getprop("ro.product.device") == "quincyatt" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "quincyatt"
E:Error in /sdcard/cm-9.0.0-quincyatt.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
Was it a bad download, perhaps? Seems unlikely, but you never know I suppose.... The only thing I can come up with is that I'm on kernel 2.whatever and the screenshots I see with 4.0+ have 3.0.8. If this is the problem, how can I get that kernel on my Note before flashing CM9 again?
Please let me know if I'm missing any other important information needed to help solve this awful stock phone problem
You need to update ROM manager.

No, he needs to update his recovery which can be done via ROM manager if he wants to keep cwm. Twrp 2.2.1.1 also works.
CWM 5.8.4.8 is what ROM manager should install for you. If you give them money ROM manager can install the touch CWM 5.8.4.3. All of these versions work to flash cm9, cm10, or any other ROM.

I just got 5.5.0.4 which I assumed was the latest, and when I installed it again through ROM manager it gave me 5.0.2.7. Odd.
I'll look for 5.8 and update...

For the life of me I can't get CWM to update. I got 5.8.4.8 from their site, which is just a recovery img, put it on the SD card as is, didn't do anything, made it a zip to try to run it as update.zip, won't do it. I deleted the existing CWM folders, put the new one on there, and it still loads 5.5.0.4. Tried formatting everything, didn't work. ROM manager won't do anything for me either.

Yeah if you're going to use the .img you have to use adb. The instructions are around.
ROM manager has the option at the top to "flash ClockworkMod recovery" that should install the latest non touch CWM. Did you try that?

I got an error in the command prompt when I tried adb, and I tried to Flash ClockworkMod Recovery in ROM manager but it installed 5.0 (wtf); since I can't get CWM to update to 5.8 I gave up and reflashed to stock, rerooted, reinstalled Superuser, put the TWRP 2.2.1.1 zip on my SD (openrecovery-twrp-2.2.1.1-sgh-i717-signed.zip), but when I try to install it gets a quarter of the way through and I get this:
-- Install /sdcard ...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
install_package = (2)
Installation aborted.
So I got GooManager from the market, and when I try to Install OpenRecoveryScript I get "No recoveries were found for your device."
I just can't catch a break here. What am I missing??

Sorry no, I reflashed to stock because it was the only way I could get rid of CWM completely. So that was in the stock recovery mode while trying to flash TWRP.

Haha, ok. So you are Odin'd back to stock and stock recovery. I would use Odin to install the cwm from braways thread in dev section. Then you will have cwm and can flash stuff (like twrp). Once you flash latest twrp you will be set to flash any Rom. Hope that helps.
You can't flash this stuff from stock 3e recovery.
Good luck.

That's exactly what I used last time, the download for CWM there gave me 5.5 which caused the rest of my (initial) problems. After reflashing stock, I tried to put 5.8 on the SD and install the zip, and it wouldn't do that either. I'll give that another shot since TWRP isn't working either....
Finally got it: had to reinstall CWM 5.5 so I could install TWRP 2.2.1.1 and then it let me flash CM9. I swear I tried that already; I guess it just needed to be rubbed the right way. Thanks for the help!

[Q] Problemwith installing CM10

Hello,
Recently rooted my phone with CF-root and installed the nightly build of Cm10. I took the zip-file into my "download" in the interntal memory and went to recovery. When i click the file and start downloading it(after factory reset, cach e.t.c) i get an "installation aborted". Its a long text over "Installation aborted" that i dont understand I have done this to me s2 before(cm9), and i cant understand what im doin wrong.
Please help me. Want to figure this out before i go to bed . Need my phone.
Thank you!
somebody help me??
Well what you have written does not give any information about the error..
Maybe it was a bad download.. Just downloaded it again and check the md5..also if the the problem persists.. Try to put the exact message here.. You can get it in the cache partition as lastinstall.txt..
By the way I am typing from my phone.. So expect typos!!

Thank you for answering !
I have tryed many different builds in CM10, so its not a bad download.
The error i am receiving is following : asser failed: getprop("ro.product.device") == " Under this it says the same as i just wrote. Then it says : E=Error in /sdcard/cm-10-20120913-NIGTHLY-d2att.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
I am running CWM-based recovery v5.5.0.4 with CF-v1.3 root

Tell me something, do you have an international galaxy S3, if yes then I believe you are downloading the wrong CM10 file, go to this page and then download the file..
The error is saying that your device check is failing..if your device check fails even after you use the linked file then using 7zip open up the file, go to META-INF>com>google>android>updater-binary and open it using Notepad++ delete the 2 lines starting from assert_check(getprop("ro.product.device") ..
Save the file and then try to flash..however in my opinion you are flashing the wrong file as the 13-09 file does not have cm-10-20120913-NIGTHLY-d2att.zip in its name..

do you have _hack_recovery.zip by condi's AiO? If you do try to flash it. if you see that hack_recovery flashes system so you should try new feature of AiO - direct flashing from recovery. I've repaired my tablet with condi's help when my stuck on sony logo after my stupid mistake with bulpild.prop.
But my tablet was soft bricked. You should be ready to replace motherboard if your tablet is not soft bricked.

Sadly,I forgot to make a nandroid backup and now my phone only boots in CWM and Download Mode. What can I do?
Stupid title does not describe your problem.
What you can do is read the faqs and guides first or pay for a service repair .
Or you could ask where you got your instructions from as the firmware/ link is not XDA .
Hey,
Try flashing latest official cwm recovery fron their official site.
It should work.

Hey
Try these steps (after error comes)
1. Reboot recovery
2. Flash again
This worked on my sgs hopes it works for you..and also this happens due to kernel..
