Help! USB device Not Recognised

Hi Everyone
First of all I'd like to thank everyone who contributes to this wonderful community. It made it very easy for a complete newcomer like me to install the Modaco custom rom on my hero and I've found answers to nearly all my other queries in the forums here.
I now have a problem I can't fix though and was hoping for some advice or help.
When I plug my Hero into my computer via the USB cable Windows has now started saying "USB device not recognised" and the phone does not acknowledge the connection other than charging. The error message says "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it".
I've tried all the USB ports and other USB devices and they work fine so I think it must be related to the phone. Tried powering off the PC and phone numerous times but hasn't helped.
I'm confused as it was working fine until recently and I can't think of what I've changed.
Can anyone help or offer any suggestions?
Thanks!
Just realised I've put this in completely the wrong forum. Sorry!
Can it be moved or should I repost in the correct forum?
Cheers

Thanks Liamhere.
Update- tried it on my work PC with same result.
I guess it confirms it's either the wire or the phone?

Try to download the HTC drivers from the HTC support or Android 1.6 SDK and reinstall the USB driver again.
Thanks for your suggestions and anyone else who has been racking their brains for me.
It was, after loads of fiddling with settings and drivers etc aproblem with the USB wire.
My new one arrived in the post and now the phone syncs up fine. Phew!
Old wire is now relegated to "charging only" duties.

[Q] HELP connection problems/soft brick

I have looked everywhere for answers but cant find any on how to get my phone to connect, well be recognized by my computers. I know exactly how to use Odin to get my phone out of its bricked stage through the download menu. But the thing is, it hasnt been recognized by my computers for awhile, even when i was using ICS on it, and i tried a lot of things but recently i havent been able to get it connected. I have no idea what to do, i need help on this urgently. Just to restate, my phone is not being recognized by my computer when plugged in through a working USB cord, please help
Go to Dev section and download the AIO toolbox (links are live again). It has Odin 1.8, the correct pit/tar files and drivers. Don't forget to download the .net files too in the OP.
Might have to go into device manager and delete the drivers you might still have in there that are bunked out.

installing stock rom without a usb cable

Hi,
I have an xperia go. The place I put my usb cable on was broken and since I had a custom rom in it, I didn't send it to warranty so I made some place else repair it.
now it charges but it isn't able to connect to pc. I use an ftp server to connect my phone to my pc, so if there is something like a zipped stock rom, I could use it to install the stock rom and maybe then I'd send it to warranty. (if it's not that void yet)...and if it is void, I need it anyway because 4.4.2 android rom can't play videos with a proper resolution. I mean it looks great only with the center mode of the video player, with fit to screen, crop modes the image sucks.
there was a similar question answered but that answer doesn't work with xgo.
Are you sure that your usb port from your go is broken??

well, my little cousin saw that it wasn't charging but sometimes charging so he forced the charger to get inside the socket and then the part of the phone that you plug the phone into was stucked inside the charger. ( so I lost both charger and the usb socket.)
it was definitely broken.
try changing your usb cable.
in my case it was my usb cable that is broken
and next time, please post Q&A related thread here Xperia P, U, Sola, Go Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting, not in general section

[Q] System won't detect Samsung s3 via usb cable.

Hello everyone! i have a strange problem with my Samsung s3 phone. the problem is when i connect my mobile via usb to my computer it won't detect my phone for USB storage but it charge my phone. a similar thread has been posted on this forum but solutions given there don't seem to be helpful for me. I've tried these methods to get it worked but failed.
changed USB cable and ports.
Ticked unticked USB debugging
and a member on this forum posted a code which was like *#7284# or *#7248# to change USB part of this utility from modem to PDA. but there is no USB option in this Utility it only shows UART which has these options.
Modem
PDA
Default selected option was PDA so i changed it to modem and rebooted my phone but still no luck...! Worst part of my problem is my system even won't feel there is something connected to the systemcomputer. Please Help!
Please somebody help.
Sir,
Please wait until mods will move this thread to the device specific forum for more relevant answers.

Good luck
