Sounds like you have an AWS Streak, which will never get 3G on Straight Talk due to hardware differences in the radio.
Yeah I know of the aws streak but I know rogers uses att bands

If you're on Straight Talk you need to set up the APN (Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Network > Access Point Names) before the service will work correctly. You should have the APN info already, but if not it's on Straight Talk's website.
Done did that to and only edge and will only pick up anytype of cell service if I have GSM only picked

My Streak is an unlocked unit that came direct from Dell. Devices that came straight from Dell were configured to use AT&T as their carrier, since AT&T is the largest GSM carrier in the country. While the unlocked Streaks could be used on T-Mobile, they never would get 3G/HSPA+ speeds on that network, because the radio frequencies T-Mobile uses are slightly different from AT&T. Dell did produce, in limited numbers, a Dell Streak compatible with T-Mobile frequencies. We refer to this type of Streak as the AWS Streak. Using an AWS Streak on AT&T would produce the same result as using a regular Streak on T-Mobile: 2G (EDGE) speeds and no better.
Straight Talk is an AT&T MVNO. They purchase signal from AT&T for use with their own lineup of phones as well as "Bring Your Own Device" plans. My unlocked Streak works perfectly on Straight Talk's service, with HSPA+ speeds. If it were an AWS Streak I had and I were to use it on Straight Talk, I would do no better than 2G (EDGE) speeds.
Since your Streak does not get 3G/HSPA+ on Straight Talk, your Streak must be an AWS Streak.
That's eerie because I got it from a guy in Canada that got it from Rogers which has the same bands as att

The only other explanation would be that your Streak's radio is defective, but I don't see that here. The one other thing to keep in mind is Rogers HSPA is on a separate network from their 2G service, unlike AT&T. That HSPA service could be running on the T-Mobile frequencies, which would be in keeping with Rogers' claims on their page for the Streak of it being capable of HSPA on their network, yet consistent with both your observations as well as the guy in Canada you got the Streak from.

Hi
My unlocked US streak directly bought from dell is on its way to me in Texas.
Will it work to make calls and 3g data when I travel to India ? It is triband gsm baseband out there used by operators and users can use any phone.
I m worried if I have to flash europe baseband over?
Thanks

Ok I did some reading and think 2g calls should work
3g in india is 2100MHz
Streak should support 2100MHz so it should work too. Can somepne confirm?

the streak is quad band 2g, in other words, a world phone so you will b able to make calls, not sure about 3g though
@rptw
Thank you ...
One related question to all, so that when someone knowledgeable passes by, I can get my answer:
Q: Is the UMTS band frequency for Dell Streak (US unlocked version) a software configuration thing or is it part of the hardware radios?
I saw a screenshot of the phone settings on the web that seems to suggest the Dell Streak having the option to choose the 900 MHZ UMTS band, if needed. Can someone confirm?
according to gsmarena.com, there are two models of the streak in terms of 3g bands go, one is the 900/2100 version and the other is the 850/1900/2100 (att/rogers) version. depending on which one it is that you get will determine which frequencies your phone will work on so yes, to answer your question, band frequency is part of hardware radios.
Dell Streak unlock
Does anyone has been able to use dell streak 5 unlock from dell with T mobile USA and get 3g data service?
I just bougth a aws one off ebay that works with tmobile 3g, but They are rare to show up on there.
what is aws?
Aws is 1700 Mhz 3g used in Tmobile in the US. The unlocked streak from Dell has only the at&t 3g support and 2100mhz
Aws streak is rare and not on sale from Dell

I may have gotten in over my head and am wondering if anyone can advise if I just blew it or if there is something I can do.
I am a Cincinnati Bell Wireless (CBW) customer and am less than satisfied with the Motorola XT720 and Samsung Galaxy S.
I looked at the specs for the Atrix (3G Network HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 ) vs the Samsung (3G Network HSDPA 1700 / 2100 ) and since I thought CBW worked on 1700 and 2100) I thought the Atrix may work on it as I was under the impression that if any one of the 3G bands matched the phone would work.
As a side note - part of my issue with the Samsung is the GPS issues. Part of it is more the issue that CBWs 3G network is not super strong and hence I am on edge even in their 3G coverage area.
Anyhow, I can only get an edge connection. While roaming this week end I did get 3G from time to time. The simple answer may be that I screwed up and bought a phone that I can't get to work with Cincinnati Bell Wireless, but I thought I would place a post out here to see if I am overlooking something. Something odd like AT&T locking out the 2100 or something that there may be a hack to open up which would let the phone work with CBW on 3G or something like that.
If anyone has ideas I would appreciate it. The Atrix is an awesome phone. Not sure that I am ready to pay the AT&T rates over what I have with CBW, especially without unlimited data so I thought I'd put a post out here and see if there is something I can try.
Thanks!
Hey man,
Im in the Cincinnati Market as well and have been with ATT for about, well since they were Ameritech. (long time) i have the Atrix and Lapdock and have been researching switching to CBW for the savings of about 100 per month for my 5 phone plan. I think that the 3g should work but havent verifited that yet. i have unlocked my phone and am taking it to the florence mall CBW to try a demo phone sim to see if i can get 3g. i currently average 1.5 mg download and .5 up load, i have noticed a difference in the towers, in some areas i can get up to 4.5 mb download and 1.5 upload on ATT 3g towers, My ATT guy says that the 4g towers will be turned on in September. should be way faster then. so i will let you know what i find out when i try the CBW sim. but im still unsure about the switch because CBW girl says their 4g is a ways off.
Good luck.
Thanks. Look forward to hearing back. At the moment i cant get it to work and cbw says it won't work.

Any updates on whether the Atrix would work on CBW? I've been debating if I should switch over to Cincinnati Bell when my Verizon contract is up.
Right now all I can say is that voice and edge work but not 3G data. Personally I am getting fed up with some of CBWs practices and policies. The best i have to say is they have an unlimited data option.

The 2100 3g band is for Europe only. The atrix will not work anywhere in north America on the 2100 band and it does not have the 1700 band. Unless your carrier lets you roam on att you will not be able to use 3g

Telus is a CDMA network, like Verizon down in the US. The Streak is a GSM device and doesn't see CDMA networks. Thus you're limited to Rogers or other GSM networks.

I guess by now you know that CDMA and GSM are 2G, and both Telus and Rogers are on 3G (HSPA) now, and as long as the phone is unlocked, you can use it on each other's network.
I am using my Streak from Rogers on the Telus network, with full data access. What you need is the right APN setting, and the betwork selection set to Auto
OP: anyway you know if your phone can support 850/1900 HSPA network ?
Otherwise, the Rogers network you see is just GSM
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
HSPA is a GSM standard, otherwise the Streak won't see the network. If that were not the case, then Streaks would function on Verizon and Sprint's networks in the States. Verizon and Sprint utilize EVDO for 3G, and LTE for 4G. Those are CDMA standards, and thus Streaks won't work on Verizon or Sprint. However, Bell and Telus have gone with dual networks, keeping CDMA support for older phones and utilizing HSPA for newer.
Apparently from your post Telus did get its HSPA network up and running. Good news, and my fault for doing improper research, as you note. Thanks for rubbing salt into the wound.

Haha ... no, not intention to correct you in public, just some clarifications.
It's all cool !
Just hope the OP can set it up ... perhaps check the Telus site for APN settings.

I confirmed that the TMOUS Radar *is* capable of 3G on AT&T.
I unlocked it this morning and put in a prepaid AT&T SIM (GoPhone). HTC Connection Setup ran and a few minutes later I was on AT&T with 3G support. The phone recognizes the HSPA+ signal and lights up the indicators with the '4G' label.
The phone's box says it supports UMTS 1900 -- this fact is not listed in any other spec I've seen on-line for the device. That band is only one of the 2 AT&T use for UMTS, so if you are unlucky and have only 850 then 3G/4G probably won't work. Guess AT&T uses 1900 where I am.
Do you know of any way to tell which band at&t uses in various areas?
Sorry, I don't know of any way to know that. I am not an AT&T expert -- knowing whether the phone could be used w/ AT&T 3G was an academic exercise for me just to satisfy curiosity.
What did you use for unlock?
Wonder if it'll work, roaming on AT&T 3G, with a T-Mo US prepaid SIM...

I am thinking of switching to Straightalk $45 unlimited everything plan for my Vibrant (unlocked and rooted). I am wondering if anyone here is using Straightalk on Vibrant. I hear people talking about
‘Straight talk Tmobile sim’ and
‘Straighttalk AT&T sim’.
This might be a dumb questions but What is the difference between the two? Do I have to request a ‘Straight talk Tmobile sim’ in order for it to work with my Vibrant. Will I get 3G speeds and not edge? I also hear that MMS don’t work but I m not too concerned with those since I don’t use many.
I would love to hear from any straighttalk users on Vibrant!!
Thanks
Straight talk is an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator). They use different carriers. You need to specify which carrier sim you need per your device in order to get 3g data speeds.

So I need to tell them I need Tmobile compatible sim for me to get 3g on my vibrant?
You can get either t-mobile or at&t sim. They both will get 3g on vibrant. Vibrant has att 3g combatiable bands. Go with the compant that provides better coverage in your area.

Thanks. Its good to know that Vibrant gets 3g on either ST ATT & ST Tmobile sim.
I would double check that AT&T is using bands for 3g service that are compatible with vibrant. I know that the AT&T captivate doesnt work on T-Mobile 3g service.
What you don't know could fill a book.
