I have this question from the day i started to use this mobile. In settings > apps>running if you add up used and free memory my phone is showing only around 768 mb. But according to specifications provided the phone has 1gb of ram which is why i bought this phone. Does anybody else have this problem...?

Which previous phone models? Please list.
Every android reserves some RAM space for its internal processing depending on configurations, features and apps preinstalled. The reserved space is also in constant use. Some smart developers discovered RAMHACK Methods to exploit and save some RAM from it for many other models. Example O2X.
Sorry but No need for discussion for this common thing in all androids.

Dude. You mean storage?
Because 64gb of ram sounds much.... too much for daily use.
And to awnser thats normal windows 8 takes likes 20gb and then im being kind.
And yea was gone ask the same question why we only have 768 mb. Why other phone like galaxy s3 or htc one x. Have like 820 more.
And they have bigger procesor... why we miss so much ram...
Hope some ram hack. To have more ram. Runs always out off ram
Maybe its a good thing that less ram is available to us and more to system. Ive noticed that this phone is much more smoother and less laggy than my pass phones with same 1gb ram but with newer 1.5ghz dual core snapdragon s4 processor like the one s.
Sent from my LG-P769 using xda app-developers app
The reason why not all of the RAM is available for processes is either because something is mounted to a RAM-Disk, or the memory chunk is used as a frame buffer for the display.
this is bull**** anyway. everyone says that processor is using this 250 but as you dive in, processor and natice functions like system uses 250 of this 750. so you have like 500 free ram as most.

I think giving more ram to processor is good thing because i have noticed that my phone is much smoother than my friends androids such as htc desire x, experia p.

Am going to get Sensation XE soon , it has 1.5 dual core processor , adreno 220 gpu and 768 mb ram.
Now the question is tat wether 768 ram wud be enough for me to play HD games...will the games lag a lot on this phone ?
I think it's beyond enough. Period.
Curious, Sensation XE isnt cheap at all, why you choose that instead of other devices?
I think something like Atrix, Optimus 2X, Evo 3D lies on the same level with it right?
Atrix and Optimus 2X both benefits from the newer Cortex A9 and Atrix has a even higher 1Gb Ram, while Evo 3D same processor with XE, alongside with a massive 1Gb Ram too. AFAIK, that 300Mhz wont be a big difference in gaming.
768 is the perfect amount imo, I owned an incredible s and that was what it had, and I could never get it to run out of ram, especially once I put cyanogenmod on it.
To tell you the truth, you would never notice a difference between 768mb and 1gb.

just searched and it "tombstones" apps, task switching so it doesn't need much memory for that.
App switching is a lot different from multitasking
Multitask: multiple applications running at the same time
Task switch: leaving an app open in idle state while u open a new one
Am i right? If so then the second doesnt need much ram at first but consumes more ram over time(i think, i dont really reasearch, i just talk on experience or other things ive heard)

yeah it basically dehydrated it so it is esentially using no memory.
Puts it into a state and just remembers the state.
It isn't actually running multiple apps simultaneously.
For an example, I took dehydrate apps off of my wp7 and with 5 graphic intensive games open it only gets to 30 Mb peak memory usage haha
That is closer to TRUE multitasking then dehydrating apps is as well.

well TRUE multitasking has its benefits too..
Taking off "dehydrate on pause" made it act the same though imo, It acts just like true multitasking it just freezes the app and starts right where it was instantly.
There is a five app limit though.
In my system monitor app it shows two cores but the second one is greyed out and says its 100% idle the whole time. Does the os not use both cores? Or is the app possibly wrong?

It means it's not being used. The second core is used as more of an 'overflow' core.

Dual core isn't "necessary" but yeah you will see pretty nice gains when both cores are used on the OS level. Also when more appps/programs are coded for multithreading we will enjoy the extra core. I mean alot of windows 7 phones are still single core and there's like no lag that I've heard about, same applies for iOS. Yes I know each OS has it perks and cons, but with this level of hardware on Android devices we shouldn't have any transitional/UI lag. Hoping that ICS will address this issue finally.

Hmm. I don't think GB is designed truly for dual core, not sure if it fully utilizes the extra core.

that was my understanding. Gingerbread wasn't written to run on two cores, just the one. Hence the reason why until we get ICS, the Nexus will be a "faster" phone as it will actually utilize both cores.
we just need Mango (Windows Mobile 7.5) then we kick it into TURBO speed!... w00t
hahahahhaha
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
My understanding of this is that Android at the system level (ie, the underlying linux) is SMP capable and active. Distinct apps will run on each core as the OS sees fit.
What isn't dual core about android is the application layer. A given app cannot multi-thread and use two cores. That comes with Honeycomb +
TL;DR - You get some benefit from Dual Core now - you will get more later.

I thought ICS would have a better RAM management... like in my Galaxy Note (running ICS 4.0.3), those APPs or programs I'm not using or opened are not automatically running in the background... unlike now, even I forced them to close, they will still keep running and consumed memory...

Don't listen to everyone in this thread. They're just giving you a hard time. I to upgrade you RAM.
1. Obtain a PhD in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Mechanical Engineering won't hurt either as you might need to redesign parts of the phone, just get an Associates here.
2. Obtain a certification in IPC micro soldering and get some hands on experience.
3. Buy the same Ram from the USA SGS3 tear down guide.
4. Simply solder on new ram, rewrite brand new drivers, make a custom aosp rom to accommodate these changes.

I think our device is just fine with the amount of ram it already has.
I mean it runs better than anything I have had before and its down right awesome to use.
There though might be a solution where they have swapped out partitions of the sd card to use as ram before but not sure if its been done on here
This is not a laptop or a pc where memory can be added..!!!
It is a electronic device, so be sensible. And I know that 1 GB RAM is more than enough for the SGS3 international to run, although a 2GB and 4-core phone would have been nice. But things does not always work the way we like...
2-Core --> 2GB RAM.
4-Core --> 1GB RAM.
So it does have its ups and downs.
LOL.
