RMA'd Prime Unlock SUCCESS! - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Here's the story:
Bought Prime. Loved Prime. Unlocked, rooted and loaded custom ICS ROM on Prime. Couple months later, green rear camera of DEATH on Prime.
I hesitated to RMA because I'd read how a new motherboard on an already unlocked serial resulted in being unable to unlock after RMA. RMA'd anyway and trusted to luck. They replaced the motherboard. Received back, camera fixed, stock ROM-JB loaded.
Downloaded the unlock tool from Asus' site, though it said for ICS only. Ran it and gave me the "network problem" error. Dang!
Fast forward a few months - I was sitting in church yesterday (yes, church) and on a whim tried the unlock tool again. Then it prompted me for a pin or Google authentication! Holy crap! I went through the rest of the unlock process and when my Prime rebooted it showed me the comforting "This device has been UnLocked" message! Woo!
Fast forward a few hours and I rooted my device, backed it up using Titanium, and am now happily running the ever-so-sweet AndroWook 1.51!
So long story short, if you unlocked your device and then your motherboard was replaced and you couldn't unlock again, give it another go!

Thinking of installing a custom rom, coz performance of this device is just pathetic compared to my nexus 4 lol. I sent mine in for RMA and they also replaced main board. My serial is 'unknown'. Is it like this for you?

Fortunately I never had the unknown serial number issue. For me, ASUS remembered to transfer my original serial number to my new motherboard.

I unlocked mine with no troubles on Thursday, that is to say 4 days ago.

I've had mine a couple of weeks and updated it to.21 then decided to unlock and root, of course i took the hard road but thanks to xda and all the great devs i was able to use the unlock tool, roll back to .15 root and so on
So I get the app installed. I agree to the black pop up box then I get a second page with an orangey warning exclamation point and other text but I don't see any option to execute on this page and I can't scroll down to select anything or click on the triangle.
What do I do from this screen? Am I unlocked or is it hanging?

Got device with .17 on it rooted with no problem.. same with registration tried apk v7 and 7.1 all i get is the network error previously mentioned. Have spent time getting things setup to my liking but until I have CWM installed I hate to do much more. Does anyone know of an alternative bootloader unlocker besides asus? And, does anyone have any confirmed news as to what asus is doing or thinking on this? Bought device 2Jun12. Thx!

I believe you have to be unrooted for the Asus bootloader app to work.
Hmmm don't recall seeing that but, no big deal to try it... let you know... nope wiped twice and installed v7 clean same error about network....
I unlocked two days ago, no problems at all.
Searched other forums and seems like a common yet erratic problem. I'm not a programmer myself ( linux cisco onetime MCSE )... but it appears there are ways to rewrite .apk filez and I hope one of our talented members can find an alternate method or fix for this one.. any takers?
I just unlocked the bootloader after getting the.28 update OTA. No problem at all. One point to remember when using the Asus unlock tool is that you have to be unrooted.
I tried from clean reset twice no root and got same msg. Firmware update says no update avail currently has build 9.4.3.17 US that it came with. nothing good is free if anybody here has a proposed solution I'm more than happy to contribute!
asus support
Well I sent asus support a description of my problem and got a reply to call a support center. They were very polite and listened to my findings after the expected warrantys gone if you tried this sermon... bottom line is this: it became clear that there is a serial number problem at asus they kept telling me mine was invalid even though I read it right off the unit to them. I pointed out that when Unit was registered online - no problem. Their only suggestion was to wipe unit download .29 and try again bad serial number not withstanding. No dice same error msg... have to wait till a modified unlocker is finished.

i don't know why people are saying this...
i unlocked mine well after i rooted it...absolutely no problems
i even specifically wanted to root it first...as unlocked the bootloader on some devices wipes everything..so i rooted, backed up my apps, then unlocked the bootloader..without a problem
but unlocking the bootloader (and consequently rooting) does not wipe anything so you're fine regardless
and as far as recently unlocking...i got one of the first primes and i JUST unlocked mine three days ago without a problem..*knock on wood*

I was fully rooted and running the .28 update but was unhappy with it. A few days ago, I unlocked my rooted .28 TFP with no issues. I am now a very happy TFP owner running Virtuous Prime Rom with Motley's 3.04b kernel OC'd at 1.7ghz and running great!

did the OP figure this out? tried reinstalling drivers (could only do windows default drivers), full wipe. about to try downloading the .28 f/w to my sd to flash/wipe it that way. i do NOT have the serial unknown issue and have had no issue with OTA's.
I did send it in for green camera and mura issues, but i'm nearly certain they did not replace my mo-bo

Hi all, I decided to finally take the dive a couple days ago to unlock my beloved prime and try out androwook and other custom roms that supposedly put stock to shame. However, I was unfortunately confronted by a crude and nasty message along the lines of:
Code:
An unknown error occurs, which may be a network connection issue.
Please wait and try again later
As usual, I unrooted, rebooted, and tried again. No luck.
I disabled and uninstalled ATP Tweak (sio scheduler/systune), replaced my modified dock keyboard files (browser mod, switched alt/search buttons), and tried again. No luck.
Factory reset from the settings menu. No luck.
Placed the .28 US update on my SD card, rebooted, and re-flashed the update. No luck.
Where does that leave me now? Locked and feeling imprisoned. I'm wondering if it is worth it to downgrade and try unlocking. So far, I have only seen one person have any success with this. Due to the potential brick risk, I want to stay away from this unless I know it will work. I also know that Asus asked for the MAC address of a prime owner with this issue, but that didn't go anywhere.
This seems like it may be an issue that is experienced by anyone that RMA'ed their tablet for whatever reason. I, personally, sent mine in for a green camera issue and mura, but do not think that they changed my motherboard.
I am also curious to see how many other people are having this issue. If it is sizable, I am willing to start a petition to Asus for them to support their unlock tool and fix this stupid error without an RMA. To that effect, please answer the poll above to let me gather some data on the unlock tool.
Thanks to everyone for your help and support that makes xda such an amazing community!
PS I don't want to see any "Asus sucks" posts. There are tons of other threads for that so please spare us
Additional info:
Have tried this on several different network connections.
Have not yet contacted Asus to see if they have my prime listed as "unlocked" already, but will do so sometime this week.
Logcat of running unlock tool results in this:
Code:
D/KeyBoxService(10158): === StatusCode: SC_UNAUTHORIZED!
D/KeyBoxService(10158): === OTA BEGIN
E/KeyBoxService(10158): === Connection to http://wvdrm.asus.com refused
D/KeyBoxService(10158): === Retry after 600 seconds.
D/KeyBoxService(10158): === OTA END
July 13th Update:
I have contacted Asus with this information. I learned something interesting. Asus has my tablet (s/n) listed as LOCKED. They also did not replace my mainboard when I RMA'ed the tablet. I also have not had the unknown serial number issue. Considering those were the 3 criteria a few of us had considered to be the reasons for not being able to unlock, I am now baffled.
I am going to continue communicating with Asus and hopefully push the matter a little bit more so that something happens. As I was told, "HQ is probably aware and working towards a fix". Let's hope that happens sooner rather than later.
September 5th update:
Seems that Asus HQ figured out a fix, but it requires an RMA. We'll find out soon if it actually works...
September 29th update:
Some of the members in this thread have sent their primes in for an RMA to fix the issue. The first prime back STILL has the problem. Asus HQ is looking into the matter...again...
Asus wants me to resend my tablet back to RMA to see if they can fix the problem. I'll see what they have to say, don't really want to RMA back. It's a software issue it seems to me, changing any hardware will just make it worse.
edit: Email was no help. Dumb. Stuck again! Yay

I found a tool for downgrading that worked pretty well, and when combined with Sparkys tool that will root you so easily on .28, the process of downgrading might be worth a try once you've done everything else.
I'm anxious to hear if anyone who's never rooted and has a serial number has ever had this problem.
I thought my tablet hadn't been unlocked correctly because of some issues and some of the people helping me troubleshoot and figure out the prime when I first got it told me to try running the unlock tool again and said i should get a response, but I always got the same network error. However I bought my prime second hand and it had been rooted before. Finally ended up doing some manual tests with ADB to determine if my problem was unlock related and it wasn't.
I had just gotten the prime, and people said even being unlocked I still shouldn't have gotten that network error. I just gave up after that, and have always wondered if it was related to it being previously rooted.
I can't unlock my tablet. I just don't get any error message at all. But I am 100% sure it's not unlocked.
No Problems here
I have a rooted 0.28, I did not root until after I got the 0.28 update.
I just ran the unlock tool downloaded from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1510737
I had to use the dropbox downlown because the one from ASUS would not work.
Unlocked, no issues. No factor reset necessary, no removing root. Now i'm completely unlocked and ruined my warranty just for you guys.
Now i'm going to go install a custom rom.
Later.
Unlocking by a dummy
I unlocked a couple of weeks ago but it wasn't easy. Why? because I am half dumb and need reading glasses. It took me part of 2 days to figure out what was going on. I would get to the final scare screen that warns you that if you do this you are screwed forever and then I could not go any further. There were no buttons to click or agreement check boxes to check just the sad warning big as life.
Then I watched a video, the one with the hyper dude with braces unlocking his prime. And I realized I was missing the buttons on that warning screen. It occurred to met that I had amped up my font size so I could read my tablet without my reading glasses. This action made the font from the warning too big to fit the button on the screen. Went into settings, decreased font size, unlocked, never better.

No, never had to RMA. My device is from the US and I'm in Poland so I'm not sure if an RMA would work anyway. I've had it for a month and besides the left screen tearing issue, it works great!
I'm going to install Wooki first and see how that goes. TWRP is already installed and backup has been created. I'll report back if this fixes things. I'm going to try without doing a full wipe (cache and dalvik only). I don't really want to re-install everything.

From past experience, you should always do a full wipe especially if you want your prime to be performing well. Do a titanium backup of all your apps (the pro version is WELL worth the money) and you'll be up and running with an hour exactly how you were before. Good luck!

Yes, my experience with the HTC Desire tells me a full wipe is probably necessary, however I don't like titanium backup. It takes too long and it's easier just letting everything trickle in over the market. I've also found that, unless you're moving from 2.3 to 4.0.x clearing dalvik and cache usually works just as well. It's not like any rom formats the internal memory to use a different setup with better performance...though maybe that's not a bad idea.
BTW, when I said the one from ASUS wouldn't work, I meant it would not download. It just looping on my tablet to which browser it should use, and I eventually gave up and tried the other link.
Got my prime back from asus RMA no more chance to unlock. My prime was unlocked before send to RMA.
They changed the board or chip, when I did the RMA the .28 update JUST came out so I tried applying it before I sent it off. Worked, so it was updated. Then they sent it back after RMA and it was a March update, way back. Don't think they downgraded, but they did change something. Then no unlock at all (though I never tried beforehand, I imagine it would have worked)

I had .28 rooted and was able to do the unlock no problem. I had to download the app from a dropbox account as I was unable to download from ASUS's website.
The issue seems to be related to RMAs. I bought mine 2nd hand from a guy who got it from his boss, so theres no way of knowing if it was ever returned. It doesnt seem to matter on which firmware you are or if you are rooted or not.... All we (probably) have in common is the RMA factor. At least thats progress!

[Q] Unknown serial after RMA.. How can I unlock?

After receiving my prime back after RMA, my serial is unknown in settings. They replaced motherboard. The unlock tool gives me the network error.
How can I unlock and install a custom rom? The performance of the Prime is pathetic on stock.
Does the 'Ratchet' tool work on Jellybean? It said 'access denied' in command prompt when I tried to push a file.

Trouble is you need root in the first place to use this tool .
Best you can do is to complain to Asus that they have returned your device in such a state. You are not alone though - seems to be their policy to "forget" to restore a serial number.
This is what ASUS told me after I inquired:
"Hi,
I've checked with the technician and please return the unit and he'll
rewrite the serial no. again.
Please send the unit back using the same reference no. "
I'm really don't want to go through all that again... And I have to pay for shipping!
And since I've actually opened my Prime to fix WiFi with tinfoil stuffed in there, I have to open it again to take all the foil out.. Maybe I'll tell them that WiFi also doesn't properly.

New found love

Every now and then, I was going through the TF201 forum for any chance that a Root exploit may be found for my prime without having to unlock. I am an early adopter of the Prime. I was rooted on my prime when it was still on ICS but had to RMA for screen and wifi problems. When it came back repaired, I didn't rooted it before JB was available thinking that I could root it after. But with the number of dev leaving this thread for better devices, no exploit was found right away. I started to get bitter at my Prime because of a weak wifi and the fact that I could not root it. I was considering selling it for a Note 10.1. Now, that an exploit has been found, thanks to flumpster for leading ufs in the right direction, my bitterness for my prime is diminished and I will keep it for another 6-12 months at least.
I had exactly the same issue. Sent for RMA a few days before JB release. I unrooted and deleted the backup before sending it in, thinking I would re-root before updating when I got it back. Unfortunately it came back with JB installed and so I have been using it less and less in the past few months. I'm ecstatic that I have root again.
It's essential for my needs.

That is exactly what happened to me. Left with ICS, came back with locked Jellybean.
There have been many days I considering just throwing it against the wall when the performance was bad and there was nothing I could do to make it better.
Honestly if they give us a ironed out 4.2 update that I can take a root to then I could accept not being able to unlock. I actually like Asus's ROM once is performance is boosted.
My wifi is a little better thanks to my custom build.prop and the piece of foil trick. Now that I am completely out of warranty I might try to open it soon and see if I can do better on that end.

Bricked my Tablet

Hello guys,
I have (had) a transformer prime with stock android 4.1.
I tried to flash my Prime with Goomanager and TWRP.
I found out that I had to install twrp manually to do this. (it was disabled by goomanager for the prime)
So I rooted my tablet with motor chopper, unlocked my bootloader with the asus apk and followed these instructions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-KLPDu2sos
They looked pretty straight forward, so I thought I'd give it a try.
I downloaded the file and relocated it to /twrp.blob and typed "reboot".
After rebooting I used goomanagers "Restore Recovery" button and after that it wouldn't boot.
It always freezes at the boot screen. (the one with the asus Logo in the center and Nvidia logo in the right bottom corner)
It also says "The device is unlocked." in the left upper corner.
I didn't know that I would need ADB (i didn't even know at that time, what that was) or fastboot on my laptop. Maybe this is my problem.
I tried the follwing things:
- press power and lower volume:
the tablets just turns off and on to this same splash screen
- I thought about trying option 1 from here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514088), but I had to install adb and fastboot, but when I type "adb devices" in the console, it says "list of devices attached", but there aren't any.
(my tablet is connected and is turned on [at least to this splash screen])
I hope you guys can help me and I didn't brick my tablet completely.
thanks
Simon
Same exact thing happened to me. Tried to reboot into recovery and now I can't get past the splash screen. No option for fastboot and adb does not show my device. I had to send mine in to Asus and that was three weeks ago. They have informed me that there will be a charge (have not said how much yet) but other than that no response from them. The issue we are having is a hard brick and unless you backed your prime up with nvflash? tool before upgrading to Jeallybean there is no way to recover it.
Hi @slatonyam,
thank you very much for your answer.
Could you please be so kind to tell me what it cost to repair it, after you got it back?
I just want to make sure it is worth the trouble and money.
Isn't there another way by using a micro sd with a build or similar?
best regards

Simon after three weeks of sitting on my tablet and numerous phone calls and emails from me, Asus finally got back to me with a quote. I believe the only reason they got back to me is because I told them to ship my tablet back to me and forget the repairs. This is the quote they gave me:
$213 for the motherboard
$65 for labor
I had already told them to ship my tablet back to me so I wasn't interested in getting it repaired and the cost is too much. I only paid $249 for the tablet through New Egg. So I think I just might buy a motherboard off ebay and try to repair it myself, I figure I have nothing to lose.

Update after 3 days or so waiting for them to ship my tablet. I received a email Tuesday stating that they were finally shipping my tablet back. But under the serial number I noticed that the device they are sending begins with CA whereas the one I sent in begins with a C1. Maybe they replaced my tablet after all. Will let everyone know when I receive it Tuesday.

I did sent my Transformer to Asus exactly 7 days ago and just got it back.
(had to send it to Asus Czeck, because I live in Austria - but it was pretty fast)
it is working again (got the same device) and it seems like they repaired it on warranty, because they didn't sent me a payment information or anything.
just got a working device back today.
I'm happy and I wish you good luck with your device.
best regards
Thanks for your kind words but I received the tablet back today and it was not repaired. But so happy that you received a repair for yours. I guess I will just lean on my Nook HD+ for now until a solution is released.
