My wife has a Lumia 920.
we have had some problems with it and had to soft reset every few weeks.
yesterday the phone stopped booting.
it is charged.
when i soft reset it, it vibrates then does nothing.
hard reset does nothing.
hooking to usb does nothing, even after a known soft reset.
what does work is the factory USB cable.
once connected to a pc, it boots to the nokia screen, then shows:
ERROR: Unable to find a bootable option. Press any key to shut down.
Both ATT and Nokia are telling me that there is no way to recover the pictures.
Can anyone help me, or perform the data recovery?
pictures and video if our daughters birth are on there, so it is very important that we get them back.
email me at d.james2 at yahoo
thanks
Both AT&T and Nokia are correct. Unless the phone fully boots the directories the pictures are technically do not exist or at least are inaccessible. Think of it as computer of sorts with a hard drive that can not be removed or disconnected. If you can't get the computer running with it's OS then there is no way to access what is on the drive. One of the several flaws with the WP8 OS and the fact this phone does not use a memory card.
Do you happen to have skydrive backup turned on? If so, check whether the pics and video are on skydrive. Hope it helps

Did an update, came out with restart, then ATT boot logo, then Nokia boot logo, then gears for update, then ended up with a sad face.
Completely unresponsive, seems like a brick. Power and volume down restart it into the sad face once again.
There was very little space available, is that what may have caused it? Battery at 100%, etc.
What can I do now? Where can I find a backup?

No, storage is on a different partition.
Did you try a hard-reset ?

Hard reset as in wiping the phone? Does that erase everything, or just the phone partition? I see photos backed up to SkyDrive, is anything else backed up?

Sorry for late answer, hard reset will wipe all your data, reset it to factory settings.
If you have your pics uploaded to skydive they will not be affected.
If you have been backing up your device on a regular basis ( text messages, application list and contacts ) won't be lost as you will be able to restore from backup once reset is done.
Lumia 920 spinning gears and sad face
I need your help, I had this bad experience since a month.
I also had limited capacity like 1.5 GB or sometimes 750 MB.
One day when I was taking a photo, I noticed that the camera application closes after I capture the photo and the photo does not appear in my Photos Folder, but when I connected the mobile to my PC, I was able to view all photos.
After that it suddenly gave me black screen but I felt that it is still working.
Then the mobile was working again then it gave me the spinning gears ending with the sad face
since that day I could not open my mobile phone.
I tried charging it (battery) but the only thing I feel that the device gets hot.
I also tried to remove the sim card, but all in vain.
I have a lot of photos, screenshots and messages that are not backed up on my sky drive, does anybody know a solution without having to restore it t factory settings.
I heard that there are softwares that could help recover all your data even if device was formatted.
I appreciate your quick reply.
By the way I visited more than one Nokia Care in Egypt, they are such idiots
Hi XDA
I have a problem I hope you can help me with.
Yesterday, while I was using my phone, the screen looked like it "shorted". It went black and white, horizontal lines apeared, flashing all over the screen. I haven't been able to get the screen to show anything since. The touch function still seems to work though.
I have a lot of pictures of my daughter and such on this phones that I would very much like to retrieve from the phone, if possible, before I send it to be repaired. I fear that, if they have to change the motherboard, I will loose all of the data, since it's located on the phones internal memory.
Now I've not been very smart, I haven't backed up the photos on Dropbox or Google Drive etc. so all of the pictures are placed on the phone, and as an attempt to reset the phone, I've pulled out the battery, reseting and LOCKING the phone in the "enter pin code" screen (Samsungs buildt in security), meaning that I cant "open" the phone and retrieve the pictures from the PC - Kies does not work either, it tells me the phone is locked, meaning I have to open it with the pin, and since there is no screen, this is impossible.
Is there any program or "root" hack etc. that I can install on the pc and force the phones USB data sharing to open, so that I can mount it on the PC and get the pictures?
I've googled around, but nothing I can use, has showed up.
Thank you in advance!
try adb from recovery, but if the pin encrypts the phone, it won't work. nothing will, actually.
what you have to do is hook up a tv out and use yout tv as a screen

Recovery wont work.. how do I hook it up to a tv? The phone only has usb...
Nvm
I'll go buy an mhl cable !
Well that didn't do the trick.
The phone wont send picture to the tv, so I guess I'm screwed
but once you've got your phone screen on tv, you could upload photos to drop box/google drive?

Hello,
My friend's Z2 was faulty and the screen died while taking a picture underwater.
The device appears to still be running normally but the screen is completely dead, no display, no touch response.
The device has a swipe lock code set which is preventing her from accessing the data when the phone is plugged into a computer.
Sony is saying they can't fix it without clearing the data and local fix-it shops are saying they can't fix the screen.
Is there anything that can be done to remotely unlock it so we can access the data from a computer?
Cheers for the help! :fingers-crossed:

Hm, quite a conundrum.
Well it depends what you mean by "data"
If you mean the files on the internal drive and not contacts or any user data at all.. You should be able to flash a new ROM using fastboot mode. How to do that is here.
Important information to avoid formatting internal sd card: This process will delete the internal SD Card if WIPE (USER)DATA or any PARTITION option is chosen.
After doing that, when the device restarts you should be able to simply connect (or keep connected) the microUSB cable and it'll show up on your PC the files on the phone.
Provided of course you have all your drivers in order, if you don't... Well here's a few links: 1 2
Hello to all genius mind.
I am writing here, to find a solution for my problem. I will start from beginning, to be as clear as possible.
This summer, during my vacation time, while diving, I found SG J5 in the bottom of the lake (sorry for the person who lost it like that...). Since I never had android smartphone in my hands before, I was wondering, can this device still work, since I have no idea how long it was under water and what can I learn from this process.
After opening it up, cleaning with 96% alcohol and drying it, devices finally showed some signs of life. Actually, almost everything was working, amazing...
Once I got this device running, I started to deal with software. Following some tutorials online, I was on the process to bypass RFP, but could not finish it, since I had other important matter to attend to. After I was back, and turned device on, for some reason, it booted into safe mode. I have been tried again SideSync method, but it was not working, since device did not reacted, after I plugged in to PC. Computer can recognize device and I can even browser the files in it. Weird thing is, that lower volume button stopped responding (I had theory that it could be jammed, once I removed it and cleaned contact, no changes was in the system, still in safe mode, so its not jammed button...), it was working before and all other buttons are working fine. Because of that, I cannot load recovery mode.
OTG method also did not worked, since nothing happen when I plunged usb into phone (safe mode block all external apps). I have tried to flash new ROM, with a help of "Samsung 300K Tool" I can launch download mode, but new ROM did not gave any result either, and RFP blocks all custom ROM's, that could modify system.
ADB do not find the device, since USB Debugging is probably off, and I don't know a way how to activate it from PC. The trick to disconnect WiFi, when it checks info for google account, did not worked either, since its not possible to select a text for sharing it.
After trying all the methods that I could find, I hit the brick wall. Phone works fine, but its completely locked. I am thinking, that new Samsung protection system is designed like this, to force phone in to safe mode after one hard reset and lock all posiblities to byass RFP, not sure though, it could be hardware problem to, but no idea where...
Does anyone here could help me out with this case
THANKS!
Best regards to all,
HG
Ever since a few days ago, my LG G5 became very unresponsive. I can only turn off my phone by taking out the battery (which is probably not good) and when I turn on my phone, it only stays responsive for about 10 seconds before I cannot do anything; I can't turn off the phone using the power button (nor hold it down for a hard power off), I can't turn up or down the volume, I can't touch my screen anywhere. At first I thought this might be a hardware problem, and it might still be, but when I turn on the phone it stays perfectly responsive for 10 seconds. No problem turning on and off the phone, volume works and I can touch the screen. Then the phone freezes. The screen is still on and working as notifications are popping up and the wifi and service bars are still going up and down. All I am trying to do is turn on file transfer to send all my photos and videos to my computer. My phone is cracked pretty badly at the top and I do get a static line through my phone but giving the fact that it works for the 10 seconds, I wasn't sure if it had to do anything with the screen and power button becoming unresponsive.
P.S. I am getting a new phone but I would really like to get the photos and videos off this phone. If there is a way to turn on file transfer without using the screen then please let me know too.
EDIT: I think that there are some spots on the screen that are ghost touching as the pull down menu seems to shake and the phone occasionally turns off on its own (double tapping same spot)
Hi, if you have TWRP installed (or USB debugging already enabled) you can use the ADB PULL command to retrieve the photos from the phone. You can also simply use the MTP transfer by just connecting the phone to the PC with the cable.
If you have an OTG USB adapter you can connect a mouse to the phone and use it instead of the touchscreen to do what you want.
Then, when you have retrieved you photos, you may try to factory reset the phone by booting in stock recovery (if you don't have TWRP) or wiping system partition and reinstalling the ROM (if you have TWRP), to check if the unresponsiveness is caused by the broken touchscreen or maybe by some virus.

So I did figure out a way to connect my phone to my computer by using Vysor. Because Charging only was enabled, I couldn't transfer my files. So when using Vysor I turned on File Transfer which then got the phone to be able to transfer files. Fast forward to today I remembered that I also need to save my contacts so I tried using Vysor again but now because the phone is on File Transfer only I can't use it. Do you know of a way to switch back to original settings?

Maybe the contacts are saved in Google Contacts, try logging into the website and see what shows up.
