No new CM for the Atrix. - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

No more CMXX for Tegra 2, at the very least not officially. This is due to the lack of Neon support on our chips. Just wanted to let erybody know.

If some one want to read it:
https://plus.google.com/117962666888533781522/posts/8wcuSVkr7zR
Well, it's not exactly that. CM10.1 doesn't have anything with NEON, but the keyboard, and it's easy replaceable.
But, as they suguess, probably, we won't get anything beyond CM10.1 - At least working at 100%.
It's a sad notice in did. But we will have Atrix for a while. Don't get upset. .
EDIT: If you read the comments, they said that maybe it's posible to emulate NEON instruction set. That might kill some RAM and CPU/GPU power, but if worth it, worth it. .

Well, since there are no official CM releases for the Atrix beyond CM7, I don't see how this is relevant. Besides, it's the Gapps that will explicitly require NEON support (for now). If KLP runs using the current Gapps, then we're in the clear. If not, well, this phone is getting to its 3rd year. That's, like, ancient in the tech world. And JB already brought a massive amount of improvement over Froyo anyway. Sticking to CM10.1 isn't such a bad idea, methinks.

I didn't mean to come off as complaining. And I think it is relevant because this is a Tegra 2 device, one that soon could earn official CM releases since we'll have an appropriate kernel. Just wanted to share some news. All I care about is PlayStore and GMail myself, so not a huge loss here.
EDIT this is general. Why WAS THIS MMOOOVED?!
Nah but seriously.

I agree with quetzalcoatl2435, this is a 3 years old device, and ok, some of us have get the device late, maybe less than a year ago, but still a old device.
But, even that way, even if we stick to 4.2 - There is some hugh progress about that. Android 4.2 is like Android as it should have been always.
Plus, if you can notice, Google is moving to release the system apps in Google Play, it start with Keyboard, but I keep hoping they release Contacts, because it's the best contacts app.
Yeah, you could miss something, we are not losing, we won already. We won because we are a community, and we could made it beyond what motorola said that we could.

I wish I knew why people keep saying it's a 3 year old phone. It's not even two and a half years old yet in the US, and barely a tick over 2 years old in the UK.

I don't think it matters how old it is period. 1) That wasn't the point of the thread, it was to share the news. and 2) If it can run future versions, it can run future versions. Time is not a huge factor.

I bought a Viewsonic G-Tablet. Did I make a good choice?

What do you like or not like about your G-Tablet?
For 299.99 shipped I couldn't pass it up.
Did I get a good deal? Should I have picked a different tablet?
Is there anything beside viewing angles that I should have to learn to put up with?

You should have spent another $100 and bought an asus. There are multiple issues that don't exist in the asus and are well worth $100
Asus got its own perks... and besides viewing angles this tablet is doing what I need. I see no other issues unless you have to have HC OS.

How does this help him? Buy an Asus, ipad, xoom or whatever the flavor of the week is?
The dev community and the price tag make the g tablet a win. If you were forced to run stock that's a different story.

Hardware accelleration is hacked at best.
Quality control is less than stellar
Viewing angles are horrid
You have about 50% chance of soft bricking your device whether you customize it or not
You have about 5% chance of hard bricking it doing the exact same thing everyone else does and they have no issue
This product is most definitely at the end of its life
The newer tablets work with the market out of the box
The newer tablet have hardware acceleration
The newer tablets have better screens
The newer tablet have support from the manufacturer
He asked for opinions. IMO spending $100 for way better viewing angles, newer software, support from a proven laptop/netbook manufacturer, google market out of the box, and official support from app devs as these tabs are authorized to have the market.
BTW.....most of the top devs are either moving to the asus or something like it. As well as all the top devs who haven't jumped into the tab market yet are gettting the asus or something like it. If you want to follow the dev community then buy what they are buying not what they are putting down

If you bought this tablet to screw around with, it's teh awesome.
All tablets are obsolete about 5 months after they're announced, let alone shipped. That doesn't make any of them any less useful. Android support from the manufactures is currently the thing that is most horrible compared to that other tablet OS - where you get an update, and - well - all of the devices are updated. Android updates? Yeah... up to each manufacturer. Good luck with your 3 - 6 month old tablet, the new OS will be on the next tablet. Welcome to Android, it's Open! And Free! Yay!
You made a bad choice if you think you did. If you're happy with your choice, you made a great choice.
If you have doubts or regrets already, and you can still return it, DO IT. Get something else. Maybe even a different OS.
I'm quite happy with mine, and I've had it nearly two weeks I'm learning a lot, and the price was right. Personally, for $400, I'd still NOT have an android tablet, but that's just me.

All nice...but...none of this is what the OP asked. He/She wanted to know was this a good purchase at a good price. I'm sure he/she saw other tablets on the market and shopped within budget. There's always a step up you can spring for, show me a better tablet at or under $300.00 and I'll recant.

is a huge deal IMHO. I don't recommend anyone buy a Samsung phone because their support sucks (even Google Android devs can't stand them and hate working with them). While their hardware is great.
HTC is the best smartphone maker out there - hands down. The continued support they provide the community and their phones is second to none. Look at how many of their old phones are still getting updates? My Evo is almost a year old and is about to get Gingerbread direct from HTC (even though CM7 is out for it).
So that's another thing to look at. You don't want to drop $300 every 6 months in order to maintain support - you want to find a device made by a manufacturer that has a proven support track record - and Asus is one, Acer is another. Viewsonic is not. We're in an age where, while there is new stuff coming out daily, the existing hardware is still viable due to the community and the manufacturer support (when you pick the right one).
I think it's often overlooked.
Quality is everything to me, my Xoom does everything I need and it's stable, plus it will most likely get regular updates to issues and featurees. Still, it looks like a great tablet compared the Galaxy Tab.

That's a good point and the reason I chucked my Captivate in favor of the HTC Inspire. I admit that I didn't realize how bad Viewsonic's support was going in, with that said, I still think this is the best choice at or under $300.00 Now if the OP wants to fork up the extra cash I say go for it, I looked for the Asus myself and may infact purchase one whenever they become available.

I didn't seriously consider any tablet when they were 400 dollars or over. I would buy an Asus down the line (when it is close to obsolete) when it hits 299.99 or lower.
However I was not aware Viewsonic did not support the G-Tablet very well. Is support in this forum from developers going to dry up in the next year? If I could get year out of this tablet I would be happy. Obviously I hoping for Gingerbread. Or Honeycomb rather? I am a newbie. (can't you tell?)
Its hard to say what support is going to look like, but the older this item gets the more development its likely to lose, its the natural order of things.

There are different factors too.... Look at the Nexus One. Still getting updates (albeit it's Google's), but TMobile is still pushing updates for the myTouch.... The Evo is 1yr old. Others are older and still getting development from the community at-large. A company's willingness to be open to the community contributes as well....

[Q] Probably a noob question but...

As I was reading through the Q&A section about the different ROM issues everyone is having, I came to realize that what everyone wants is to be able to run a a trully stable version of Honeycomb and be able to have all the treats that come with it. My question is that since the Motorola Xoom is the tablet by which we all measure our gTablets, why can't we just load the firmaware that it's running? I have just enough knowledge about this to be dangerous but from what I understand, the hardware on the two tabs is nearly identical, so why can't this be done?

like the cameras are different. we gots a 1.3 and i think xoom has 5 or 8...not sure. lcd's are different. gsensors might be different. and many more
its like trying to install mac on windows computer you gotta do so many patchs to get it to run.
people have said a new update from viewsonic is coming which might help us. but no recent news.
ok thanks, I didn't realize the difference was as drastic as that. I just figured to use the software that's necessary for the basic operation and discard the parts that operate the peripherals. I didn't realize it was a package deal. You learn something everyday. Thanks

Well, the differences aren't as drastic as what's described, even thought it might as well be. Just think of it this way. I remember about 5 years ago there was a news story about this couple who had a couple kids in an attempt to save one of their children. They had already had 3 kids. One of the kids had a degenerative disease that required bone marrow transplant. The problem was not a single person in the extended family was compatible. So, they decided to have another kid in hope of compatibility. Nope. So, they had another one after that. Luckily, the 5th child in the litter was compatible with his brother. And his brother's life was saved.
They were all families. The genes were there. But just some genetic differences and nothing about them was compatible.
When we're dealing with softwares and hardwares, little differences might as well be huge differences.
The gtab has the tegra 2 processor. So does the xoom. The tegra 2 in the xoom is ventana while the tegra 2 in the gtab is harmony. They're supposedly 2 lines of productions, even though the specs are almost identical. Driver for one doesn't work with the other.
The Xoom was actually the first port that was attempted on the GTAB, back in February - we were stuck on the framebuffer until May, when MrGuy over in Tabletroms.com managed a fix for it. But by then there were ACER and ASUS images.
I've also heard that 3.1 is a different animal than 3.0.1 (think 2.2/2.3 differences), so it's been slow going for them to get that working. And the other big issue with the Xoom firmware is the size if not deodexed - it was ~300MB and there's only 192MB assigned to /system on a GTAB. If was just too big to use. The Adam and especially VEGA devs managed to get the ASUS image down to a reasonable level.
Just a message of thanks

Is the GTAB dead?

Is the GTAB dead (or more so the Android)? The development of new ROM's have slowed and the long wait for video drivers and the release of more code so we can run HoneyComb one has to wonder. The very thing that makes Android product so great begs the question to be asked. It makes one wonder why a supposed open source code appears to be the held from it's users. The day of Android may have peaked too early with the stagnation of it's OS and failed promises. I have never been an Apple fan, but they do work and well. It has made me wonder if it is time for a change.
I don't think its Google withholding the source. It is the manufacturer of the product/device that dictates how long their product/device will be supported. Viewsonic would need to work on getting it working or ported to the G-Tablet and release the drivers etc needed to for devs here to work or create custom roms. So far the only way to do it is to build it from scratch.
I don't know much about development, so I apologize if I am incorrect as to the process steps. Don't give in to Apple though. All of their stuff is overpriced crap that gets replaced the next year or less than a year later, then they expect you to pay for the newer product to get their newer features. They haven't even released a 4G device or try to rework with Adobe for flash support. If you look at Android devices, popular manufacturers try to emphasize on releasing hardware that is ahead of its time, they won't make your device obsolete by the end of the year.
Afaik development is still going. This thread keeps updates with the status on having a properly working honeycomb kernel. last updated a few days ago.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1231577
And the Flashback team has Froyo, Gingerbread and Honeycomb roms that they update regularly, Caulkin/Clemsyn updated their rom to v7, and there is Cyanogenmod for GTab, so no, not dead.
I am running Flashback 9 (released last night), while eagerly awaiting the GTab Kerneldev team to finish their port of the 2.6.36 kernel so native Honeycomb 3.2 should run.
Plus if Google holds true to their words, Ice Cream Sandwich source should be released about a month after the Galaxy Nexus, and I imagine Cyanogenmod will shift to that.
There's a heck of a lot more going on for the GTab than for the stupid HP Touchpad I bought for $149 (I got 32mb version), although Cyanogen team says it'll be out for Touchpad in a few weeks...

Excuse me for asking, but what in the world is a person doing on the XDA developers forum talking about development being stalled? And, to make it even worse, why would you go in the direction of the most locked up system in history?
If you are unhappy with the speed of development, then get going and do it! And, if you want the simplicity of a toaster and only want to make toast, then, by all means buy an apple product.

It's fanboy answers like that, which do nothing for the Android argument.
Let's not be ignorant here, Apple makes great products and their software/development is tight.
But anyway, let's stay on topic. Like everyone else said, the G Tablet is far from dead. I just started using C+C this weekend and its amazingly fast! It has breathed new life into my G Tablet , especially with Skype working.
Check this article out: LINK this is exactly what I was trying to talk about... it's not necessarily my option, but the way a lot of people are feeling.
That's the way a pseudo tech journalist who is a closet Apple fan feels about a buzzword using data that's out of date.

[Q] Has Canonical Waited Too Long?

*Note: This is a multiple choice poll*
Did anyone expect the development cycle to take so long for a public release?
Where is the dedicated hardware?
Have they changed too much from the original UX promised?
Since Ubuntu Touch was announced many things have changed and many, many months have gone by. How many version updates for Android and iOS? Firefox OS made it to market, Jolla's Sailfish made it to market, Samsung dithering around with Tizen is the only thing taking longer than Ubuntu Touch. Heck, OpenMobile finally delivered an Android Compatibility Layer for HP Touchpad running webOS for crying out loud. And Nokia released an Android phone; so Hell has already Frozen Over!!!!!
What gives?
How do you people feel about the loooooong wait for maturity of this OS?
I first tried and got excited about when I had a nexus 4. Which I sold as soon as the nexus 5 came out. I pledge for a couple Ubuntu edges. Remember that?! It seemed like they were on track to release something in a decent timeframe.
I would still put money down to try out a phone released with Ubuntu touch if it has great hardware.

The point is - Doesn't matter how many people say 's'wonderful, 's'marvelous IF IT NEVER MAKES IT TO MARKET in almost 18 months. People walk away. There is patience and refining. Then again there is just fiddling along and wasting people's time.

It sounds like you've already made up your mind. I just leave it installed on my Nexus 4 and start it up every couple of days to check for updates and review the progress.
I'm sure some phone manufacturer will put their toe in the water sometime soon, and as long as Canonical continues to support the Nexus models that's a pretty good base for potential users. End users will choose Ubuntu Touch because it came with their device or they like the capabilities and won't be concerned about its history.

You got it, although my preferred response would probably have been more like "No - It's not dead yet so let's see what happens", but please don't add it.
LOL.

no...but
Since none of the multiple choice answers accurately reflect my opinion, I'll give my own. No, canonical didn't wait to long, but they should focus on developing a kernel that supports hardware for a wider variety of mobile devices, a unified bootloader for smart phones and tablets, and usb installation.

I'd put that as a "No - I still have faith, a public release is close."

It is just that I don't believe in faith, and I don't know for sure if a public release is close. But nevertheless, If a release comes out I'll definitely try it. Better late than never.

So, clearly, Huawei is delaying until the 11th hour

Huawei informed us last year that they'll be releasing Lollipop in the second quarter of 2015. 5 months and 3 days have already passed and if wasn't for a glimpse they provided some months ago, I would have found it difficult that our HAM2 will ever be updated.
I received my 1+1 about a month ago and tried Lollipop on it. I am not particularly impressed by Lollipop. I had to reinstall kitkat. Lollipop is over-simplified and has lots of white.
Clearly, Huawei is slow at deploying Lollipop. That is true. It sounds like you really don't care though. You seem to prefer KitKat. Not sure why you started this thread.

Huawei had promised to release Kitkat. They retracted. Then they promised Lollipop. Even though I'm not a Lollipop fan, it provides the option of having the latest android OS on your phone. So, there's no harm in that.

I got ya. I agree. I am still hopeful they release Lollipop soon. They aren't the best at this kind of stuff though. Their track record is fairly poor related to supporting existing devices. I think they are trying to be better, though. Time will tell.
Android L is meant to be released on the Asian Mate 2's on July 2nd. I think it is unlikely that it will be released for the US version before this, but if it doesn't come out for you guys on the 2nd July, I would contact Huawei and moan like Hell. Unfortunately I have seen NOTHING about a release date for the MT2-L03.
I asked them on Instagram and got the usual "Thank you, we don't know anything, we'll tell you something when nothing does everything." kind of comment.

The Asian HAM2 is a completely different phone internally, there is no reason to believe the development paths or release schedules would be in any way similar for both devices.
After over half a year of vague promises (and a worthless 'beta program' website) from Huawei USA I wouldn't expect an upgrade to Lollipop for the MT2-L03 - I honestly think they were just stringing everyone along and trying to quieten the uproar among HAM2 users that was happening at the time. I'm hoping I'm wrong, but I bet I'm not.
In the meantime I'm still trucking along on my HAM2, but I am looking at possible replacements. Most notably the new Alcatel Idol 3 looks really really impressive for the price.

Yes, thanks. I'm well aware that they have different hardware.
I said to moan as US customers were told an update would be released in the first quarter of the year..... That hasn't happened.
I'll get flamed again, but even if they did release an update, it would be hard for me to upgrade unless some feature of software took advantage of the update. 4.3 WORKS. Turn it on and use it, don't have to reboot it. Yes, if there are security bugs, that's one thing, but if your device works as delivered, I'm more of a leave it alone, new doesn't always mean better, just new type of person.

Man, the main theme of all your posts is "4.3 is GREAT". In fact, all your posts contain the same information in different wording. We have UNDERSTOOD your preference. I don't understand why you keep repeating it. Its a little bit tactless to be repeating the same post in every thread.

He said he'd get flamed. At least he wasn't disappointed.
There isn't a ton of activity in this forum so I think we can tolerate multiple posts from p51d007.

I've got the latest and greatest lollipop on my nexus 7, I've also got a rooted samsung s3 that has a custom ROM on it. But I must say this phone
the mate 2 is by far my favorite, the battery life is unreal, love the big bright screen. It may not be the latest and greatest but for me it is a great phone.

I actually bought the 1+1 after reading rave reviews about it almost everywhere. I initially intended to keep the 1+1 and give my dad my HAM2. For some reason, the mate 2 was too good to give up. It has everything I want in a phone; large screen, very long battery life, fast, smooth transitions and most importantly it doesn't get hot like a stove. Anyway, at the end, I kept the HAM2 and gave my dad the 1+1. Seriously, I gave up the 1+1 with all its laudatory specs for the HAM2 and I have no regrets.
This phone's screen is too freaking big for me. I already have a tablet, don't need another one thanks. Unfortunately I can't afford to upgrade it right now so I'm stuck with it. And now Xposed broke so now I'm stuck with the ugly grey nav bar and enormous DPI. (EDIT: Nvm, I fixed that.) Seriously, why did Huawei artificially raise the DPI, the native 240 looks so much better than the stock 320, makes everything look much smaller and crisper and gives you more real estate.
I just want Lollipop. Then I'll see if it's worth keeping this phone or if I should make upgrading a priority.
At least the battery life is nice, but that's about all I can say is going for this phone, and I'm willing to bet in part that's because of the lower res (720p) screen.
