I have a Sprint Evo 3d which Boost says they can activate with the ESN. My question is, can this be done while the phone is rooted with a custom ROM? Does it need the stock ROM and if so, is that good enough or does it have to be unrooted too? Right now it's s-off and still hboot 1.4 so I don't wanna do anything to screw that up or have to redo anything, if possible.
If the phone can stay rooted with a custom ROM, can different ROMs be flashed while it's on Boost? Does it matter what ROM? Sprint ROMs OK? Will I need to change APN settings or anything else?
Thanks in advance!
It has to be stocked Based. It can be rooted but as long as it is sense 3.6

Thanks for your quick response. Right now it has MeanROM 2.4 on it which is ICS 4.0.3 with Sense 3.6. Is that good enough? Do you know if the ROM can be changed once it's on Boost and would I continue using Sprint ROMs?
Not new to rooting, etc, just new to trying to take a phone from Sprint to Boost.

Yeahh that ROM is fine. I would flash stock root just to be safe. Yes you can change the ROM once it is flashed to boost. Yes you continue to use sprint ROMs. Just search for the MMS fix for boost.

on my evo 4g there was a zip i would flash and it unlocked my hotspot and i didn't have to use any third party apps. is there such a thing for the evo 3d as well i enjoy the stock rom and i like the concept of everything looking as stock as possible while increasing my functionality i tried searching the forums but to no avail.
any help appreciated
thanks,
eric
Flash Steele H's rom. Its stock but heavily tweaked and has the hotspot unlocked. I've been running it since release with no problems. Especially once I loaded chads latest kernel, the rom just got a lot more smoother.

My ROM is stock, but has features such as Sprint HotSpot and Beats audio unlocked. Also not heavily modified, kept it stock for those who like that.

Without bootloader unlock, you can't even sneeze in /system, much less make changes. Sorry man.

It just says virgin mobile on the banner of lockscreen, I've read people on boost/metro/cricket, have updated their firmware problem-free.
I'm boost to and will be updating firmware this evening once Newt drops new revision of this sense 4 rom

Not me!!!
i was gonna update to the new ics roms, but i had to first downgrade my bootloader so i can s-off... for some reason After I downdraded, and ran revolutionary, it messed up my flash to boost... now i cant get the phone to activate!
Yes I'm EVO 3D HBOOT 1.5 rooted now with S-OFF. I'm on Boost Mobile also. I did the wire trick to get S-OFF and YES this will restore the phone to the original settings. YOU WILL LOSE THE FLASH TO BOOST. Therefore, I lost my BoostMobile flash and had to go through all of that exercise again. Not fun. I wish I had known this in advance as I would not have bothered with getting S-OFF. I did this because I heard you cannot use ICS ROMs with S-ON. Well now that I have S-OFF I was able to get Mean ROM to install but it appears to be loaded with Sprint Bloatware so I didn't want it. I tried the latest Viper Rom hoping it would be better and I'm not able to get past the HTC screen after it is installed. Therefore I'm still on GingerBread using Eternity Infected ROM 1.4.2. I tried upgrading to Infected ROM 2.0 but it had problems everytime so I'm still on Infected ROM 1.4.2. I also have not done any firmware updates so my Radio or baseband is still 97.10.0808
Ok I am almost at the point of trying a Rom. My questions are..
1) being htvdev unlocked ota upgraded are there roms I cannot install? If so how can I tell.
2)again with the ota restriction can I use goo manager to install or do I need to use fastboot flash boot to do it.
3)looking for advice on a good Rom to install. Not sure about going senseless not that I am against it just I realize it is more than just the pretty face. Although the only widget I use is fancy widgets do not think that requires sence but I could be wrong. I would like the rom with the best multitask capabilities. Super user of course and buttons renapped for sure. The fastest most stable Rom woukd be best.
4) I have reset google wallet so will I be safe from bricking my chip?
Thanks for any and all help

Title pretty much says it but just wondering if anyone has not been able to run custom kernels. It started with my attempt with Komodo etc., but I always get some form of screen flashes or massive FCs. Im am rooted with original 1.12 hboot. I have been able to successully load and run ROMs from Viper to AOKP, even CM10.1 but never able to run a custom kernel. I have wiped clean, reset and still no go. I am using the 2.2.1 TWRP so wondering if the newest TWRP would fix that ability? I know some of the EVO LTEs just wont run with a custom kernel but figured I would try.
Thanks in advance for any input.

Are you S-Off or S-On. I would flash the latest recovery just to be safe.

I've had the same issue with Komodo. I'm S-OFF 1.19. I tried on the latest twrp, 2.3.3, and even on a tip re-flashed 2.3.1
I was able to boot after flashing with 2.3.1, sometimes...but it really wasn't stable enough to even try to use. Constant reboots, FC's, bootloops, etc
The device I'm having this issue on is an insurance replacement from asurion, the 4th one to be exact. i never had this issue on any of the previous devices...my first was new via preorder, that was stolen, and the first 2 refurbs were returned due to other hardware defects, although at least they could run a custom f***ing kernel.
as far as I've been able to tell nobody has found the issue that makes some devices not take to a custom kernel.

Thanks for the replies. I am S-OFF, current baseband etc. I haven't tried the voltage mod, but will look into that and come back for questions if necessary. If you have any tips on the voltage mods etc, feel free to pass them on. I have tried to use Goo Manager to download the newest TWRP but kept getting errors but haven't tried today. Will try to get the most recent on and look at voltage mods. Its not a huge deal, I get great battery life and its fast enough but I wanted to at least see if there was something specific that I have been missing to run the kernels. Thanks for all the replies!
The Komodo kernel worked only after updating TWRP to newest and I also had to use the voltage mod as neither would load without it. Great advice and for first time I am running custom kernel on top of PACMAN ROM. I tried capped at 1.7 then 2.1 both work but the 2.1 started to indicate some weird results within minutes of loading. I backed down to 1.9/384 and looks to be the sweet spot. Thanks again!

So I'm kinda a noob, at least for HTC. I have a VM 3D rooted s off. My question is I have tried to install ZR3D rom, but all i can get is a boot loop. my bootloader says juopunitbear 1.57.5757, is this my issue? I was thinking the loop is due to bootloader. I did run factory wipe, and dalvik/cache, installed using 4EXT. Can someone help please?

Sounds like a bad download. The latest version is 3.0 final episode. I used jbear 1.58 hboot for that rom when I had it and it ran great. For you the 1.57 hboot should work fine. Only problem with sense 4 roms is the low volume. Just an FYI.
