S3 bezel cracking issue - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I'm considering moving from a Note 2 to an S3. I love my note but it feels a bit large and cumbersome.
On researching the S3 I noticed a number of threads (mainly from last year) about the prevalence of the bezel on the S3 cracking in various places (under the volume and power buttons, by the micro usb port etc.)
I was wondering how widespread these issues were. Do all S3's inevitably suffer from them or are there people out there who have had their S3 from release day with no issues?
Thanks all.

Shouldve asked in those threads, and in the correct section not to clutter up the forum

Mine isn't cracked but my gfs couisins is in 3 places but I think that's from being dropped

Its a common problem. Its purely cosmetic.

How long have you had yours for?
@rootSU I appreciate it's only cosmetic but seeing as the only straightforward way to replace the bezel is by replacing the screen too it's not really something I'd take a risk with. On the note 2 the bezel can be unclipped and replaced for ~£10.

You know the problem exists and now you know its fairly common. If this is a concern, avoid the s3

About 8 months til my crack appeared at a guess btw. Its annoying and means I'll probably never be able to sell. I would avoid now if I'd have expected this problem

all depends on the price

Mine is cracked near volume racker. It is only cosmetic. Don'n think it is selling problem for those want to sell it and those want to buy used device.

I wouldn't buy one with a cracked bezel. I can only ever judge a situation by my own standards. So if you would buy one, then I guess you're the same

what about a dented/scuffed bezel? (i have the same thought process as you regarding re-selling)

Anything that clearly makes it look damaged really.

A lot of people buy damaged phones like this to save money

My white S3 that I bought in August 2012 got a crack by the Micro-USB port... doesnt bother me since i have a case on it anyway

Selling a damaged phone gets me less money than a phone is worth to me. You may aswell give up. You'll never get me to sell my phone cheap to you.
But who would buy a phone knowing that there's a chance its resale value will half due to cosmetic faults? They don't get it cheap on the off chance it breaks.
If I knew I could only resell this phone at half its second hand value, I would never have bought it

I'm with you to be honest. I cannot stand buying something that is already visibly damaged and before buying anything second hand I scour the device looking for marks and scratches - even the lightest ones.
I'm still sat on the fence at the moment wrt the bezel. Does anyone thing newer s3's might be better constructed, and I assume there are people who have had their s3 from launch and have had no issues with bezel cracking whatsoever?
For those that use cases what kind of cases cover the bezel? I'm not a huge fan of cases particularly because of the bulk they add, but if there is a slim case available it would at least be a solution of sorts should the bezel ever crack for me.

I recently bought an alu case. Its the only one that covers the crack. It wont prevent the cracking though
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

2 SGS I9300 here and both of them have about 2-3 cracks on the bezel.

My white S3 is still perfect, I keep it in official Samsung Protective Cover or the Slim one.
I am very careful when I insert headphones or usb charger not to scratch the phone.

Its more to do with expansion and contraction than not being careful

This is not right.Go to the store and get a replacement.
But s... happens and 20 mil units sold in less than 2 month some of them will be faulty
I've seen about 20 phones and pretty much all have that problem to some degree. I had a 16gb blue and now a 32gb blue and both gathered dust around the edges and home button. Yours seems to be slightly worse on the side.
Anyway, although I love the phone I can't believe samsung's build quality can be so bad. I also own an iphone and after 2 years it still hasn't gathered any dust anywhere. Shame such a good phone is spoilt by crap build quality.

You obviously have a white model which is why the dust doesn't show up as much as on the blue. Even then it mostly shows in bright light / sunlight.
BTW, my preference of phone is none of your business. Just stating facts. I sell phones for a living and haven't seen 1 yet that had a perfect fit along the edges and back cover for that matter. For a phone with such a big price tag that is pretty **** on samsungs part.
FWIW, I've owned the S1, S2 and now S3 and the galaxy series is my preferred phone. But Apple build quality is miles ahead, and that includes the 3gs iPhone which had a rubber seal between the screen and edging to avoid dust buildup.

You have a white one and since the dust on mine shows as white, it obviously wont stand out on yours.
You can do a quick test. Rip a small piece of paper and run the pointy bit along the edges, front and back. If it can go in, then it will gather dust.
As for your friends blue one, check it while sitting indoors with sunlight shining through a window onto the phone. He will likely see dust around the edges. That's how I noticed mine.

Lol. What part of my comments are based on emotion? Stating that I have physically seen 20 or so units and all had a gap to some degree has nothing to do with emotion. But since you've seen 2 perfect phones means that you are fully informed. My apologies sir.

believe me i tried your suggestion because i know it's a good thing to clean the edges once in a while so that the dust won't accumulate, but using a thin piece of paper and trying to insert the right angle edge did not go in.
so there are no gaps.
btw this is a white gs3.

Thanks for testing. Well its good to know that there are ones out there with no gaps. Pity mine has a small gap at the bottom. Not really noticeable but in certain lighting conditions the dust does show.
After selling my 16gb to buy a 32gb model, was hoping the second one was better but it was just the same. Small gap or not, I wouldn't give up my phone for anything out there. The S3 is pure beauty.

Yes but this phone was never intended to be in or around any liquid substance so if that causes an issue, it's user error.

I looked at one in an ATT store, and the plastic bezel was terrible. Didn't line up, gaps, looked like it was cut with a stake knife. Made me not want the phone. Then went to wal-mart, and looked at a t-mobile phone. It was perfect, so I bought it.
I still would like to see a picture. I'm pretty sure I have one but I just want to confirm. Maybe I'm just too anal.
If you want to subject yourself to the OCD torture of the gap issues, there us a thread in the international One forum that has many pictures of the gap.
Also in the at+t forum there is s thread called gapgate. You'll find more pics there as well.
Some I would say are valid while a lot are being really OCD and nitpicking.

I'm not sure if the gap does affect the seal, but all phones have some sort of seal even if they're not intended to be in or around a liquid substance. Sudden changes in climate cause moisture to form, and all manufacturers use measures to prevent it from going beneath the screen. I doubt the gaps affect this, so my rambling on was basically to say that I understand where the concern comes from.

I have a insanely small gap on mine but I decided to live with it since for the last 2 weeks I've examined the screen every day looking for dead pixels. Have found none. Seems like a lot of people are having them so I didn't want to risk getting one with dead pixels. I think it was a good compromise.

The gap is a serious build-quality defect
Folks, this is a serious manufacturing defect build-quality issue in the first batches of the phone that we have got.
There must be ABSOLUTELY NO GAP between the chamfered metal edge and the plastic.
HTC themselves have claimed this, most recently a few days back in a video that they put up themselves boasting of its ZERO-GAP CONSTRUCTION!!!
Those who do not see it or understand the gap in your phone, please see the videos below.
Here you can clearly see the gap:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwOu5oXpjVQ
And as you can see in the video below, just press your phone at the edge and you can clearly see the gap "closing" (what a shame),
Try it and you will most likely see it on your phone. This is really a shame.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNT1YRcGDL0
Folks this is serious.
I am having this gap too. (I went to the T-Mobile store and even their demo unit had this issue and they said that most of the phones in the batches so far have this issue.)
I am quite surprised by the responses from most of those who responded so far in this thread. Hope I have helped to make aware that these are indeed defective devices that we have got.
You paid a premium price for an expensive device that is supposed to be zero-gap construction and has been been advertised as such by HTC: unibody, precision-cut, diamond-cut, zero-gap construction.
(Here: http://www.htc.com/us/smartphones/htc-one/ and most recently here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiZMhmIWBRU )
This is a serious build quality issue in the batches of phones that have come out so far.
The sad thing is I showed this to the manager at my local Tmobile store and they said that they are not recognizing this as a defect and will be charging restock fees to exchange.

Self Made Phone Cases

Hello people!
I was pretty frustrated with the fact that markets are only flooded with iPhone covers and devices like our L9 barely have any accessories available. I had a Galaxy Mini earlier and faced a similar challenge.
So I resorted to making covers myself!
You can check out the photos over here.
I could make a jacket type or a pouch type, with or without a stylus pocket, with or without camera and speaker slots. I could colour it the way you want and write whatever you want or leave it blank for you to do your own thing. The first few pictures show a one with a plastic pocket on the back to slide in a paper. The photograph in that model can be removed and replaced.
The main ingredient to the covers is newspaper. (Reuse!!)
The covers are decently tough even though they are made from newspapers. They have a layering of cardboard to give them extra strength and fevicol too gives them a lot of strength. The top covering is with a mixture of fevicol and water applied on tissue paper which also strengthens the whole thing.
I paint using acrylic colours because of two reasons--1) They are waterproof. They wont let the phone get wet unless you drench the whole thing. 2) That is what I have at home and I am too lazy to go to the market.
If somebody is interested in buying one, you could Email me at [email protected]
I only have the following phones and can only make covers for these.
Samsung Galaxy Mini
BlackBerry Curve 8900
LG Optimus L9
iPhone 5
P.S. Yes, its DBatraOriginals.
Putting #swag at the end discredited your whole post.

Thing is there is actually a decent selection of cases for the L9 on eBay, you just have to do a little digging. Hell there are Nilkin cases for less than $10 and brand new from various eBay retailers (I ordered one myself last week). Or you can get the S-line cases for less than $4. All of them come with free shipping.
Just search "optimus l9 cases" and you get a lot of results. The main problem is that there aren't enough cases and acessories in local phone shops but it's much cheaper to get it online anyway. I'm never going to buy cases or screen protectors from regular stores again (i've wasted too much money unnecessarily), i'm sticking to online lol.

It's very small. I was able to kind of hide the clear aluminum showing with a black marker. I also just noticed I have 3 dead pixels so maybe that would be enough if they don't really notice the scrapes. I got it from an official AT&T store.

I was within 14 when it fell so I took it back and told them that it was to fragile along the edges, got way to hot (130°) which I screenshot and the headphone jack doesn't work well with FM radio and he said no problem and replaced it and that was that. It was fraud on my end, and I paid good money for a phone that I wanted to keep in mint condition. Haven't dropped the second one yet but I have gaps, which isn't too bad. My advise, go for it and it isnt fraud of there is actually a problem with it anyway.

I ended up trading it in and getting a silver one. I was completely straight with the rep and showed him the scratches which he thought was no big deal and were barely even noticeable. I had to point out the scratch locations since he couldn't even see them at first. I showed him the dead pixels and also the power button which had this awful click sound which drove me crazy. I just had to pay a restocking fee and was good to go.

I bought it. Absolute waste of money imo.
Why you even started a thread and miss titled it without having the product? Really placeholder?

I hot it for less than $1, haven't used it yet. Why do you say it's a waste of money?

I second this, the fit is anything but good. There are rather large gaps around the screen which defeats the purpose of having a screen protector.
It has poor fitting(large gaps on the side). Pretty thick compare to other protectors. Are you sure you got the temper glass protector? I find it hard to believe you got it for $1. I paid $6 and it's a waste.
I paid $16 for a flexible glass protector by iloome. Now that's worth the money. Great fit.
I have 0 gaps on mine, I think it's user error. If fits perfectly & I even have a case on mine. I purchased 10 of these for 10 different devices & good investment.

I have the spartan glass on the galaxy s5, and by far its the best one I've tried! I was planning to buy the same for the G3 but they are out of stock and then I see the negative reviews!
More to the point, the video actually shows the flaw everyone is talking about: Even though you have pushed the glass further from one side, the other side, still has a small gap! even ignoring that, the fact that you have left space on one side but the other side hasn't gone off the screen means the fit is not perfect. Don't get me wrong, it's still a great value but I can see where the complains are coming from.
Thank man for the video review nonetheless.

I saw no issues with it & fits fine for me. But if worse comes to worse, I'll just contact them & get it replaced. Their CS is AMAZING!
The edges of the screen protector don't go over because the gap is very minimal when I attached it, if I would have removed it & put it on again I'm sure it would have fit fine.
I'm just glad you don't even notice it with a case on it & it doesn't lift at all.

I don't know where all these rave reviews are coming from, maybe I got a bad unit from XtremeGuard. The glass protector is very thick, it feels sticky to the touch, it doesn't line up well and there's no cut out for the camera. If I hadn't ordered it a month ago for 90% off I would have sent it back. Now it will just sit collecting dust.

It can't be user error because if there are gaps its a manufacturing error not a user one. A user can't make the protector smaller.

Exactly. If you have room to push the screen protector over and it leaves a gap on one side then it doesn't fit.
All the protectors I've had that have the "gap" makes them case friendly. I prefer that myself, but to each their own I guess.
I have 0 complaints about the screen protectors

I understand your point, my only issue is the size of that gap. On other screen protectors it's almost non-existent, but this one has a big gap in comparison.
