S2 very hot - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
recently my s2 died (wednesday). I suspect it was due to condensation.
anyway, today i put a battery in it after leaving it in rice, and it turned on.
however, the phone was hot, very hot actually and the battery life didnt seem consistant. eg. id put a battery in, itd say 80% then turn off the phone, turn it back on and itd say 9%. this is in the space of a couple mins.
ive got 3 batteries, and all showed similar things.

the above photo shows where the heat is coming from. its too hot to touch. it wasnt like this before.
it doesnt even need to be turned on for it to heat up. once a battery is inserted, its almost instantly burning.
anyone know what that is which is circled, what the possible cause for the excess heat is, and any solutions?
thanks

Hi, I believe the IC you have circled is for battery charging/control which in the s2 is a max8627. The IC could have failed or maybe one of the caps near it (which do look like they have some sort of residue on them).
Short of replacing them there might not be much you can do i'm afraid. If you are feeling adventurous and have a good soldering iron (a steady hand can help too ) give it a try.

Hi, thanks for the reply. makes sense why it gets so hot now.
should of mentioned, thats not my photo. i found it on another thread, but its the same place thats heating up on mine.
i think i might give cleaning that area with isopropyl a try, although not sure if thatll make much difference.
edit- using the ic part number you mentioned, i came across this thread http://samsunggalaxysforums.com/sho...age-overheating-u503-(USB-OTG)-and-Workaround
which is exactly what is happening to mine.

Good find there. Sounds like this IC in particular is prone to failure after being shorted out. Will you be attempting this fix?

yeah, no other option really. getting a new phone soon, so thisll be handed down to a family member if it works fine after attempting the fix.

update-
just used a dremel with the smallest diamond tipped bit i could find, and wore the chip away.
the phone still turns on, and temps are not only feel different, but are reported as 31c (was 80c when the chip was present).
so a success!

Sorry for late reply glad it turned out to be that component and you managed to fix it.

So i need to "hard boot it" in the volum up-power - menu area...
Anyone knows what to do and how to fix it?
But when the cable is in and gives power to the unit its starts normal and turns off normal.... and that rly starts to piss me off
So pls help a noob
that is the battery temperature warning.
For some reason the contacts on the battery may not be making clean contact.
Take the battery out and with a tooth brush clean the contacts on the phone and the battery.
reinsert and see if that solves the problem.
nope it didnt help anything

The usb/charging port that is so i got my phone back. they didnt wanna touch it couse they told me it would die sooner or later.. they could change the mainboard but they didnt wanna do it.. So i need to fix it my self. so i ordred a new usb/charging thingy and gonna replace it when i get it.. Ill update if it works or not (sry my sucky english)
Bro dunno but have I tried using a new battery? The symbol is a temperature/battery warning. Did I get it wet??

nope. has not got wet at all... Even tho the repair dudes says it "water" damaged.. .Anyhow.. i ordered a new battery too. so first gonna test that before i change the usb part.
Get the battery cover, hold each of the sides with you're fingers and bend so the middle of it is going in ward, bend fairly far, now try, fixed my battery problem which was similar to this, also it would alsol think it's charging when it's not and constantly vibrate, I had been bending the back before and just realised when the phone was screen down it was fine so realised was loose, hope you fix it

just changed the usb port and now it works perfect again... even samsung people couldnt do that.. lol

well, you are the first person who actually fixed the problem. No one in all the forums I've been reading was able to identify or fix it.
Could you please tell how you replace it? are there any instructions or ¨comprehensive guide¨to do it?' I'm having the same problem too.
Thank you
No one like my fix? Worked for me? Also adding a bit of tape to the back of the battery worked
well. wasnt hard tbh. Just take apart so u get inside the phone. take of all "screws?" so mainboard is loose. then take out the usb board and replace it.. .should be doable without taking out the entire mainboard. i just "tipped" it upwards so i got the cable thingy out... sry about my sucky english.. U need proper tools to do it. cheap tho but the "screws" is so damn small. And yes.. my phone still works perfect.
hmm thing i posten a guide to it somewhere.. give me a sec..

Phone randomly shuts down, powers off

A few weeks ago my Evo 3D started to turn off on its own at random times andwon’t turn on until took the battery out. I did some searching around andnoticed that many people are having the same problem. Also, I have noticed thatmany suggestions were that some app is killing the phone. Well after diggingaround in my phone and un-installing all apps, the phone was still doing it. Inthe last few days I accidently shut the phone off by just moving the batterywhile it’s in the phone. After some more messing around, the phone does shutoff when I push the battery away from where it touches the metal prongs on thephone. If anyone else having the same problem can test out my fix, it would begreat.

If you search around, a lot of people did have the same issue you had. Your solution should work and has already been confirmed by others.

that sounds good, but i couldnt find this anywhere.
I guess I should have said "a few" people. I think a loose battery or bad connection can cause random reboots and shutdowns. If you search for those terms you may find some more threads. Here is the one I was thinking of.

i was having the same issue but i read on some posts that the radio was an issue
so i had the old radio on my phone i only flash the newest radio and since then i haven't got no reboots...already a month and my phone is working fine...
My problem is related to ambient temperature. If it is above 90 out it restarts randomly. I go inside and it is fine. This is related to nothing else.
I went to the park with my kids this weekend and had no restarts because it was 70 out. I was at the same park doing the same things a few weeks ago...it restarted every 5 minutes.
After 2 weeks of cool weather, it restarted today because I am wearing black jeans (it was in the pocket) and it is 80 out.
I am going to exchange it AGAIN--I had the same problem with the last one.
I had that problem with my 2nd EVO and they replaced it at the Sprint store. That was a couple days after my 30 days

[Q] Internal Switch in my S Tablet

Hi,
Ok so I decided to fix an annoying little rattle I had with the battery today. I opened up the 2 screws, slid of the cover and placed a little foam between the battery and chassis. Job done. Then I spotted a switch here

}
So I switched it (Yes the Tablet was off) and then I switched it back the other way. Put it all back together and attempted to power up. No good. Dead. Held the power button for 10 secs and still nothing. Plugged in the charger and lights flashed then could power it on. The battery was already fully charged and also indicated this when successfully powered on.
SO what did I switch ?
Sony Tablet S 16GB Wifi - rooted
Any one any ideas ?
Do you mean it works when plugged in? but not on battery? If so what percentage charge does it show - maybe try measuring voltage on battery - preferably direct if you can open the case again, or try some soft first - I saw som widgets etc measure voltage, temp etc - I don't use any of them so cannot recommend. I believe setting menu has battery status too but I believe it's just stating its state or something simple like that not the voltage.
It works perfect now, it only didn't switch on the first time till i plugged in the charger. Now it works fine all the time. If you look at the picture the word OFF is printed on the PCB next to the switch. I'm really just curious to know what it switches off.
wtf... could this be like a manual s-off switch?
Would you be able to re-post the picture? It's not showing up for me (could be the work computers though) Or a link perhaps.

I wanna check this out myself when I get home, but firstly, how deep did you have to go to get to this, and did the rubber feet go straight back in easily and stay inplace well? Don't wanna have them falling out all the time
Here you go
or here too
taking the rubber feet off was a little tricky. I used 2 nail files , one to push the rubbber from the edge of the hole and the other to lift it out. They are quite sticky and go back easily.
Check this out as it might help
http://www.techrepublic.com/photos/cracking-open-the-sony-tablet-s/6301055
I had a look at the pictures on the link above but still no mention as to what this off switch it for.
There is a switch inside the asus transformer that kind a looks the same and it is for the batery, when your device does not see your batery anymore than you can use the switch to deconnect and connect your batery again without removing it.
When the batery drops under a certain voltage the tablet wont reconize it anymore and than you need to do this.
I think when pulling the switch you"removed" the batery, that is way you had a scary startup after that
Is possible to add a better battery?
The battery is completley removable so it can be exchanged. Its only a matter of waiting for one of the after market battery makers to come up with a bigger battery to install.

[Q] Heat/Battery issue?

TL;DR
I got a new replacement in the mail about a week and a half ago, and the first couple days that I used my phone I had absolutely no issues. After those two days, my phone started acting up. What it does, is get really hot and shuts off. The battery is also wack.
EXPLAINED
I got a new phone because the motherboard in my old one was fried, but the screen was broken on it. I took the motherboard out, called Virgin mobile, and they sent me a new phone. I ordered the white housing for the phone, and took the new phones motherboard out and put it in the new housing + a new digitizer. I assembled the phone correctly, and it works, then it overheats. I thought to myself that maybe I forgot to put the thermal tape back on the housing, but I pulled it apart, and the housing had it on there. SO I think that maybe my battery is causing the issues I am having? I don't know. I didn't get a replacement battery so yeah. What do you guys think?
Also, I need to root, I will see if this fixes the issue I am having.
Here is a picture of my battery use.

Root won't fix anything if it's battery issue. What battery do you use (name, voltage and mah values)?

It is the stock battery that comes with the phone. I have looked at a few replacements already.
It is 1720 mAh.
I also discovered, when the phone needs to be charged (0%-14%), then I plug it in to charge all night, I wake up and the phone's motherboard is like, BURNING hot, and the battery isn't. And suggesting that I root, I was implying that I would go that route if it wasn't a battery issue. I am pretty positive that it is a battery issue however.

Ill be seeing today weather it is the battery or the board. Someone told me that the voltage regulator on the board maybe what is causing the issues. I didn't disagree, since it does use something like that to regulate voltage.
you should get a new battery off of ebay or amazon

System services battery drain le max 2 x820

So i was using happily my le max 2 for amost half a year, when this thing kicked in.... System services.... for no reason what so ever, it jumped to the top of the list in battery consumtion. It was devouring entire battery in less than 5 hours! + it made phone red hot (~41*C) with no apps running.
So i started to look for solution.... and i found that factory reset may help, and it did!.... But for a week... After that, guess who's back on top? This time is even worse, some days, it outruns screen in power consuption.
Now, I'm out of ideas on what to do, so Please, help, i really don't want to do factory reset every week or so

Which ROM do u use? I have stock 26s by C. B. G. And this is my System Service usage.
I use stock room, the one that came with the phone, and in 5 hrs. System services ate 1052 mah. I'll upload pictures as soon as I become normal member
Okay, looks like phone decided not to eat battery, system services is now really low on battery consumption and battery will last approx 1 day 16 hrs... Dunno what fixed it but it fixed itself overnight :v
How can I fix the same problem?
System service exploits too many batteries.

factory wipe helps, also you may try to toogle gps on and off ( i noticed system service was going crazy when i launched gmaps and it could not locate my phone on map) or plug in charger and wait, maybe it will end.
For more permanent solution, i recommend to change system, there are plenty roms on this site so pick one and go for it

Google your issue, maybe someone already had this problem and found the solution. If no luck, try changing rom to different one.
I have a theory of what this could be. I have the same problem but my phone also vibrated in short intervals. As if I'd try to unlock it with the fingerprint but it was denied.
So I just disabled the fingerprint-unlock and it ceased vibrating already.
It was really unrealiable anyways so I unlocked it with the other method more often than not.
Just while writing this the phone also already cooled down and a check at the battery-drain shows that the steep downward-dive is now almost flat. So I guess I found it:
An error with the fingerprint-sensor reporting someone is trying to unlock all the time.
