Battery will not Charge Safestrap still installed - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I have a Kindle Fire HDX 7" that I purchased a couple of months ago for my son. It was rooted and running Thor with Gapps. He plugged it in before going to bed and when we looked at it the next morning it had the Google X showing. We unplugged it and now it will not power up unless it is plugged into a wall charger. It will boot into safestrap, but bootloop before it gets into an OS. I bought a ChargeDR to up the power output on the USB, but as soon as I try to switch to sync it will turn off again. My theory was that if we could get it to fastboot with sync on then we could ADB, but that is out. Not sure if there is any way to salvage this one or not. What is odd is that safestrap still thinks it has 67% battery, but calibration must be off, which is why this happened to begin with.

If I read you correctly, you are assuming that you have not developed a hardware problem, but that the software is preventing the battery from charging. That seems highly unlikely.

Sorry for the confusion, I would say there appears to be a hardware issue as well. I am concerned that since it has safestrap installed that if I were to return it to Amazon for repair it would not be covered. Without being able to access it from a computer, I cannot remove safestrap. I have thought about force charging the battery by opening up the case, but it sounds like a complete disassemble would be in order. I cannot find any information about other occurrences of this problem.

Not to worry. If it's still under warranty, tell them it's broken and they'll send you a new one. They don't ask about the software you may or may not have installed.

Thanks. It should be under warranty, it is nice to hear Amazon isn't taking such a hard stance on development for these devices.

Atrix won't boot - even with factory cable

I have a Motorola Atrix 4G on Bell Mobility. Currently the phone will not boot at all. The phone is out of warranty.
When this started I began by searching through the xda forums and found several similar problems. Most pointed to the sleep-of-death or a charging adapter problem. I have tried charging with the Motorola adapter that came with the phone, a USB cable and the Motorola Lapdock. None of these have provided any happy. Each time I tried, I left the phone overnight, when I checked on it, the phone and battery were cold. I tested a known-working battery from another Atrix and the phone would still not boot.
Some other searches point to a factory cable. I bought one on Ebay however the phone will not boot. I tested the cable on a known-working Atrix and it works fine. I did notice that when I plug the factory cable in to my phone and in to my Windows 7 PC, it detects *something*. Under device manager I see an unknown device called "APX". So far Google and xda searches haven't been able to provide me with a correct answer.
When I plug in the regular USB cable the green LED turns on for a while, if I touch the power button, the green LED goes out. RSD Lite does not detect anything, I assume this is because the phone is not in RSD mode.
I have tried combinations of volume buttons/power button as well, both with the wall charger and with the factory cable. Nothing displays on the screen at all no matter what I've tried. The phone had the stock install from Bell however was rooted with SuperOneClick (obtained from xda forums and installed many months ago) and had no third-party apps on it.
This death seemed to start slowly, at first battery life was at times terrible, then it moved on to not wanting to power on for a while if the battery died or the phone was turned off when the battery was low. Removing/re-inserting the battery several times typically helped. Eventually the phone got so bad, when it booted it would just crash repeatedly with a message about motorola.home.something (sorry I don't remember exactly what). Hitting force close would just bring the message back up again. I left the phone off overnight and the next morning, R.I.P. my Atrix
I have access to Windows XP or 7 as well as Linux.
Any help would be appreciated. Also I apologize for the long-winded post, I'm trying to provide as much information as I can.
I had this problem to, I freaked out, what I needed to do was to get another Atrix (in this case my Uncles) and make sure that the battery in it is FULLY CHARGED, then I took out my battery (in the broken phone) and put in his, then I got a solid green LED, then I had to leave it on the charger overnight, after that the M would show, but that was it, so I then went into fastboot and flashed the ICS Leak, and ta-da.

I've tried that with no luck. I should also note that the factory cable bypasses the battery, potentially eliminating any battery problems.
It's possible that your phone is finished. The 'motorola.home' error is usually caused by something you've updated (google search?) but I would doubt that it would cause your phone to not even start up.
At this point, I might be inclined to open the phone up (http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Motorola+Atrix+4G+Teardown/4964/1) and see if you can see anything obvious?

Nothing obvious when I took it apart, no visible damage or problems. Any other thoughts? I've been told to try ADB from a Linux box and see if it will do anything. I've started installing ADB but looking for more insight.

Update. I found this ... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11901016&postcount=75 and now instead of "APX" in Windows device manager, I have "NVIDIA USB Boot-recovery driver for Mobile devices".
It looks like NVFlash might be something I need next. In other news, the phone when plugged in via the factory cable, is actually very slightly warm. It's the first new sign of life I've seen in this thing for a few days.

I've had no luck at all since my last reply. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046994 seems to have something to do with my problem, but I'm not able to dig up a solid answer. As best as I can tell, I manged to hard brick the thing and I'm up the creek without a required paddle.
Any other thoughts on this would be great. Even if I'm able to ensure the device is wiped, I could send it in. There are work files on there (I know, I know, I'm an idiot) I can't have out in the wild.
Just bought a replacement Atrix for $100. It included three cases, three batteries, wall charger with cable, car dock and a metric ass-load of screen protectors.
I do want to thank everyone for offering help and ideas, it was a good learning experience!

Updated "Please help: VZW S4 not charging..." (The refurb/replacement is busted)
First of all, big thanks to this whole community and the wealth of info that led me through my first time rooting and flashing ROMs. But now on to the sour part (search didn't bring up anything useful to my situation).
Short history of phone in case it helps:
I've been rooted since June (rooted on MDK). I've been on the CM 10.1 and then 10.2 nightlies ever since. I've followed all directions, and am glad to say that I had a great experience (a few hiccups from dirty flashing a few times, but nothing that couldn't get sorted). Last ROM I was on was CM 10.2 nightly from 2013-10-11.
Anyway, last night my battery gets low, but I didn't charge it right away. It got down to about 8%, and then I try to charge, but the battery icon doesn't indicate charging. Indeed after a few minutes fiddling, the % drops to 7%. Trying to charge it while powered off caused the phone to vibrate once every 5-10 seconds or so, but no LED or on-screen indication it's charging. I tried my wife's S4 charger and cable. Same result, not charging. I restored to a previous CM nightly backup I had from September. Same result, still not charging. I restored to my rooted stock ROM backup made right after I first rooted in June. Same result, not charging. Charging from the wall or PC doesn't make a difference. I ended swapping batts with my wife, using her stock never-been-rooted S4 to charge my batt, which worked just fine.
The USB port on my phone does work since I could see the device in Odin. Tried reflashing the stock kernel. Still not charging. I spent the rest of last night restoring to out-of-the-box stock. Now I'm back to a completely stock, unrooted S4 (still on MDK kernel, haven't accepted update to ME7), and it still won't charge. No notices or anything that the charger is connected. Except this morning, for no reason discernible to me, I now get the following warning message when I connect my or my wife's charger:
"The connected charger is incompatible with this phone. To prevent damage to your phone, charging has been stopped. To continue charging, use the original charger and cable that were provided with this phone."
Thoughts, please? And thanks in advance to you all.
Update 1 at 2013-10-13T17:30EDT
So I did some more digging and came across what looks like a similar problem (that's what I get for not using Google for search anymore). Sorry, can't post links yet.
forums.androidcentral.com/rogers-samsung-galaxy-s4/297925-samsung-galaxy-s4-not-charging-grey-battery.html
The biggest difference is that I don't get the grey battery symbol when plugged in while powered off, just the cyclic vibrating. And mine doesn't charge at a reduced rate at all (I lost 7% battery in 45 minutes while plugged in and powered off due to all the vibrating).
Further, my "incompatible charger" warning has ceased. I'm just back to the phone not recognizing a charger is plugged in at all. Phone still talks to my PC just fine though.
Is it likely I need to replace the USB charging port flex cable as suggested in the Android Central post? Thanks for anyone reading and pondering.
Did you try to flash back to stock?

Yes. I flashed via Odin back to unrooted stock (MDK kernel) and stock recovery, which is the phone's current config. I haven't yet done the ME7 update, but it auto-downloaded today, just haven't installed it.
How long have you had the phone? My suggestion would be to make another backup and put it on your computer. Then restore back to full stock, no root or anything. Take it to Verizon / Best Buy and tell them it's not charging. Hopefully it's not water damaged.

I've had the phone since the end of May (so I've owned it 4.5 months). Since I've already restored to full stock, I'm thinking tomorrow I'll take it to a VZW store near me to see what they say. Is Samsung's manufacturer warranty handled through VZW? Or do I deal with Samsung directly? Note, I have no extra insurance/warranty on the phone.
That should be manufacture warranty and you normally have1 year from purchase. Good luck and again just ensure you completely wipe it off all root and custom Roms. They'll try to blame it on that.

Back to VZW to replace the replacement phone
Update:
I went to my local VZW store on Monday and they tried cleaning the USB port. No luck, so they shipped me a refurb since this is still under the 1 year hardware warranty. I paid the extra for overnight shipping. My refurb phone arrived yesterday. I moved over my sim, micro SD, and battery from the old phone to the refurb/replacement phone, and plugged in the wall charger. BOOM, battery starts charging no problem :victory:. I spent last night getting my phone all set up. I also checked and this phone has the ME7 update so no more CM or any other ROM for now :crying:.
But otherwise, everything looked good with the replacement device...until this morning. I had the phone powered off all night, tried turning it on this morning and it won't turn on. Won't boot normally, won't boot into recovery, won't boot into download. Tried a battery pull...no luck. The phone had like 95% battery when I shut it off last night. Now, when I plug in the wall charger, the phone buzzes once, the grey battery icon with the circle shows up for 10-15 seconds, then the screen goes blank, then that sequence repeats.
Back to VZW today to get the replacement phone replaced .
dang...you have some bad luck. I had some similar issues and the phone seemed to fix itself?? Did not want to lose custom recovery, so actualy ordered an external charger and two batteries and of course the day the batteries came, the phone started charging normally again. Anyways...good luck...hopefully the new device wont have the newest update (which i dont think it's ota yet...just over wire). Dont let the store update anything at all or you may not even be able to root!

Hey guys, im a regular over on the htc forums but not very used to samsungs and was wondering if i could get some clarification
Got this tablet from a friend to repair if i could. the tablet was in possession of my friends mother who is 60+ and careful with her tech. never drops it, always charges it on time. then device was never flashed or rooted in any way. It was handed to me already in apx mode and the back story was simply it wouldnt turn on any more. i asked if it was powered off while updating, or fully discharged or anything but was told no. it was just placed onto the charge when she went to bed and was non functional in the morning. as stated the device is in apx mode, i looked into it and the bootloader is locked so NVFlash is non functional. i have been trying the battery drain method but ive had the power button taped down for 3-4 days now with an otg cable plugged in and other stuff like pen drives etc connected to it to try drain the power to no avail. i got impatient and i tried the disconnect and reconnect the battery method (as the op stated that the battery drain and the battery pull method should have the same effect), but to no avail.
Im beginning to think that its seen its last days as the battery pull method has consistently failed, and i cannot seem to find a j-tag method anywhere.
so, am i correct in thinking that its just spare parts now? device has been OOW for quite a while now and given that the battery was fully charged prior to me obtaining it, it could take weeks to discharge.
If anyone with experience on this issue could chip in that would be great! cheers!

My P7510 is acting like it is bricked. It will not start. I tried the power button and volume combination and nothing works. I connect to my Windows 8 PC only see it in Device manager as "Other Device" as a APX without the drivers loaded. I have charged the device for hours on two different chargers.
It had 50% charge when my nephew was playing Angry Bird and he returned it in what I thought was just sleep mode. I tried turning it on 4 hours after I got it back and it would not come on. I figured the battery was dead so I charged it but to no avail.
It is not rooted and has the stock 4.0.4 Android version.
I cannot ask my nephew what he did because he is autistic and would be scared to deaf it he though he broke my tablet.
Any help is appreciated.

I think the reason nobody has replied because it looks like you did your homework and tried everything that would have been suggested. Unfortunately the battery disconnect is the last resort if it's not hardware. If it was software issues the battery disconnect should have worked AFAIK.
I had to send mine (GT-P7510) in for repair when it went into apx mode. Fortunately for me it was under warranty.
Just a thought, but have you left the battery disconnected for a day or more? Wondering if the tab is holding a charge some way with the battery not connected. Maybe connect something with the battery disconnected to drain all possible remaining charge from the tab. For a day or more even. I've seen stranger things happen even a few who where they said it just started working out of the blue. Not likely to help but might be worth a try.
EDIT-Just had another thought I remember one tab I fixed that was stuck in apx mode and removing the battery didn't help. I diconnected the battery and plugged into the charger held the power button and it booted. I let it do a full start before connecting the battery.
Can't remember for sure, but I may have held power+volume down. Could be worth a shot.

[Q] Soft bricked(?) DNA, can't get into bootloader... Please HELP!!

Hey guys,
So I've had my DNA for almost 1 1/2 years, and just recently decided to root and flash CM 11 and CWM recovery onto it. Now, everything went fine, except a month later, I was listing to music on Pandora, and my phone crashed (it has a few times before since it wasn't a stable release, but always boots back up in like 5 mins), but this time it never booted back up. I let it sit in the charger over night, but got nothing, not even an orange light. So I decided that, since it was broken anyways, to go ahead and take the entire phone apart and reassemble it. And after the second time, it turned back on (by plugging it into my computer at the same time of holing down the power button). But an hour later, the battery died, and I couldn't get to the charger in time, so it shut off. Now, I've tried everything that I have before, and also took it to a repair shop, but never got any life out of it again. Does anyone have any ideas about whats wrong? Is it fixable? I've also herd of a type of USB jig for Samsung phones that can put an unresponsive phone into 'download mode', is there some kind of equivalent of that for the DNA? Any help is appreciated!
Thanks!

It's your recovery. Try the most recent twrp instead. I've had this issue with my rezound and DNA and it's scary for sure. If you find a way to power on your device immediately change recoveries. Some are touchy on charging a dead phone.

Would maybe trying to charge the battery outside of the phone work? If so, how would I go about that? A friend of mine has a Lipo charger for RC cars, could I make some kind of jig to charge the DNA's battery with that?
EDIT: Found out he has a supper high end lipo charger that is programmable, so could I charge it with that if I can get the battery hooked up right?

You could to irreversible damage to the battery if you do the settings wrong, or hook it up incorrectly. You can get a replacement battery online for pretty cheap. I suggest that than possibly having a small explosion from charging a battery in a way not suggested. After you get the phone back on, immediately fastboot flash a different recovery as @iHateWebOS said.
New batteries come half charged (40-60%) out of the box as that is the suggested storage capacity for batteries to ensure long shelf life.

Okay, just ordered a new battery, should be here between the 10th and the 20th. Hopefully this works
HOLY ****, IT WORKED!!!!!! My DNA booted!!! Thanks so much guys!!!! Which recovery would you guys recommend?
EDIT: So I flashed on twrp, and it won't charge with the original battery in it, so does that mean if the new battery dies, my phone won't boot again? If so, which recovery should I flash to prevent that?
Okay, update. So I tried updating my DNA to the latest snapshot of Cyanogen mod (was at m6, going to m11), and the recovery failed, so now I'm soft-bricked... I'm trying to flash on the old m6 snapshot I have on it, but it keeps failing. Also, the recovery won' t support external storage, so I can't flash on m11 from my flash drive... What should I do?
EDIT: Okay, just found out that I was running the 2.4 beta of twrp, so I'm trying the latest 2.8.0.2, Ima see if that does anything
EDIT: YAY, flashing the latest recovery worked!! so now everything is working properly, except the digitizer, since I ripped the ribbon cable a little, but I already ordered a new one
Okay, so I accidentally let the battery drain, and now I'm at square 1 again. Does anyone have the pin-out schematics for the battery on the DNA so I can make a jig to charge it?
Thanks!

Hi. Please forgive me if the answer's out there and I've missed it. I've been looking but don't see an answer to my problem.
My unrooted Kindle HDX 8.9 was on whatever the newest software was as of two weeks ago. One day it was fine, the next it wouldn't start up. I can get it to boot into recovery occasionally. I tried factory resetting it from recovery. It said "erasing" then rebooted and said it was updating, then nothing. The screen turned off and nothing else happened.
Sometimes it will power on and the first two kindle screens will appear then it goes black and nothing else happens. I can still get it into recovery sometimes. Mostly it just says "kindle" for a few seconds then goes black.
Is there a way for me to reinstall/flash stock kindle software?

As you probably gathered there is no easy answer to your problem. It has characteristics of a power problem (bad battery) where the device will only run for a few min/sec before shutting down. It could also be overheating. I would engage Amazon if the device is still under warranty.

Interesting, thanks for your input. I was actually wondering about the battery but wasn't convinced that was the problem.
It was at 60% battery the night before the issue, and then next morning I plugged it in. I took a shower, got out, the battery icon said 100%, and then it just stopped working. It wouldn't connect to wifi, so I shut it down to restart it. When I restarted it, nothing happened. I tried to restart it several times. It would occasionally boot to the first "kindle" screen then go black. After that, it ran down, I assume because of rebooting/hanging on one screen and then no battery icon would appear when it was plugged in. After a few days, I plugged it in and a big red battery did appear on the screen.
This stupid device was ONE WEEK out of warranty and Amazon would do nothing but offer me $20 off a new $400 Kindle. Fool me once, Amazon... Luckily, I bought the kindle with my Mastercard and they have an extended warranty policy. They sent me a check for the cost of replacing the Kindle and I bought an Ipad. Eff Amazon. I'll never buy anything from those jerks again.
I still have the Kindle but am no longer invested in trying to fix it. Maybe someone will give me a few bucks for it on ebay. It's in perfect condition other than the not working thing. Never been dropped, rarely left my house, no kids, no smoke or pets, etc. I'm pretty pissed at Amazon. There are 20 or so HDX reviews in the last month that say almost the same thing.

Agree with the shoddy treatment from Amazon. Although technically out of warranty (by a week!) one would hope for more than 5% off retail. Enjoy your ipad.
