[Q] Noise Cancelling Headphones / STM10 Microphone / 5 pole error fail bah! - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK so this is my second Z2 which was sent to me after SBE Ltd (Sony's repair partner for Three UK) lost my 1st Z2 after I sent it to them for the repair of the above error. I own both the noise cancelling headphones & STM10 microphone and after using them for a couple of weeks, they fail. They first of all stop being recognised, then on the right side of the sound/recording there is a repetitive click and no noise cancellation at all. Both phones were not immersed in water, both phones have never been rooted, as such both phones are stock. In the case of the 1st one it ran .52 this unlocked version (ex-review unit!) Runs .314 yet both have failed in exactly the same way. I was recording my girlfriends grandma's 90th birthday in 4K for future generations and guess what, click click click all over the audio. This phone is so annoying. Anyone have any ideas wtf is going on? I've tried factory reset/software repair and nothing works. I'm loath to send it back to have the same **** happen again. Thanks in advance.

I dont think there is a fix for faulty hardware you may have to send it back or just switch to another xperia, Z2 has some problems and non faulty units are slowly becoming more common, not very fast but slowly.
I had a simular issue where when i sent the Z2 to the repair centre the phone wss stolen from the postal company, eventualy sony sent me a unit that was checked for not being faulty simply because i told them so
I dont know how sony can mess up 1 phone so bad yet the rest never faced a manufacuring error
Lol new stuffs always break

I got the same click sound when I plugged regular headphones in after having had the phone immersed in water. I believe its the phone trying to determine what is plugged in to the port. Mine would plat for 5 secs with a quiet clicking then stop. I repeated it a few times and the problem reoccurred . After i let the port dry out completely there were no further problems.

Never been in water, so not water related.

Call audio quality

Hi
Me and my Mom both have Lumia's.
When I'm talking, no one is complaining about my outgoing call quality - they hear me very well, but my Mom is getting very poor call quality(but not always). I can hear her like she has mouth in plastic glass. It's really strange. We were playing around with our phones and sim cards (different providers), to check if it's problem with phone, but with my card it worked good on both phones, also audio loopback in diagnostic is good. Next we exchange our sim's and I give my phone to Mom, so we can check how it will be if she phone me with one and another from hospital (because my sister is there), and... both gave me bad audio quality, but here is the best part, when she hand the phone to my sister it went to very good quality as normal. It blow's my mind. I don't know what is going on.
Anyone have some ideas what can make it?
I forgot to add, that my Mom's signal is a little bit weaker on this phone, but even with 3 straps it should be good.
And with her old k800i signal and audio call quality was better...
Do you not cover the microphone?Lumia has two,the main is on the left lower grille..second is under the led..
I think it's not the problem, my Mom use this cover that is with Lumia, and it would be hard to cover microphone, but I will check it. And I think that second microphone is only for camera/conference talk?
But you can cover it with your hand..the second microphone is for the interference..
OK
So I find my problem similar to this:
http://discussions.europe.nokia.com...blem-sounds-like-a-speaker-phone/td-p/1310137
And Mom said, that I have this problem too (but not too often). I will just try to replace both phones.
Btw. I found my Phone to make clicking noise while pushing to the right side of the screen...

Same problem.
Very low volume when making phone calls and recording video.
Hardreset did not help.
Yesterday, I did send the phone back for repair and i'm alread missing my lumia 800 :crying:
After two months after getting this fixed, this problem has re appeared. Its very frustrating, ok going to have to take it to the Nokia care centre again, last time it was fixed the guy said it was a "loose wire" and he fixed it in a day. This time I will make sure it gets sent to Nokia for repair, and not repaired but some guy who probably has no idea what he is doing.

Interferences in earbud

I have a pretty annoying problem because from the earbud (under the wrtitten SONY) comes interfecences while i'm speaking with someone using the mobile line.
The interference is like that of the speaker near a mobile phone but from the earbud.
someone has the same problem or mine is a isolated case?

I think you mean earpiece...not earbud.
If you hold the phone near your ear you can hear a very high pitched hiss sound while you are talking? The sound has a pattern to it. If so, then I have tried 2 of these phones and they both do it. I don't now if they all do it, but it seems to be common. Some people who don't have such good high-pitched hearing will not hear it at all. You will never hear it if you are outdoors...only if you are at home in a quiet room.

I hear it too. It's the usual GSM "cellphone interference" sound.
Hi i have the same i hear that xd
But what i have noticed this is only in GSM mode ...at WDCMA its ok..i cant hear this .
I have the same problem. Got my first phone replaced and the new one came today with the same problem.
Try only with WDCMA (3G) and See if that help.
Sent from my LT26i using XDA
Now I did some tests,
I tried only GSM mode and there's no problem, only WCDMA -> the same thing
Good also WCDMA/GSM..
sometimes the problem seems to disappear
Yeah I too have the same issue.
Its not everytime but sometimes,
Its like a electronics interference noise.
Don't know what's this all about ://

I think it's for the bad isolation of earpiece, but someone think the problem come out when the XS switchs GMS/WSDMA

i can hear that hissing too, i ve searched about it, and it looks like latest smartphones have that kind of problem, the only solution i could find is not to place your ear directly on the earpiece, fortunately this phone has a great in-call volume...
earpiece hissing, crackling, buzzing - problem solved
well amigos, the problem finally has been solved for me, reading this forum https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3414732?start=0&tstart=0
so i turned off my phone, i removed the sim card, i cleaned it using a soft cloth, and then i inserted it back, making sure the sim card was placed correctly in the tray, i tested it several times and guess what, there was no more hissing anymore, so the problem is the micro sim-card, those sim-cards must be placed correctly otherwise it will make that hisssing sound
i hope this works for you too
greetings from colombia...
Had my first two calls today, same problem. Interestingly, it gets louder/more noticeable when I'm actively speaking, not when the other party says something.
Sim-Card is fresh from the envelope, so there shouldn't be scratches, dust or fingerprints on it, but I'll try cleaning it up tomorrow. Got the phone set on GSM only, since I've got bad 3G/UMTS signal at home and I'm pretty sure constant "channel-hopping" would drain the battery.
Hi,
got xperia S yesterday. Great phone... only problem is GSM interference in the earpiece. It is there every time when phone is set to 2G. 3G is free of this issue. As I can hear at every call it's a bit irritating.
I don't know what should I do: sent it back to the store (bought from amazon), try to repair in the service centre or learn to live with it?
Can any of xperia S owners make a siple test: put the phone in "only GSM" mode and make one or two calls. Put earpiece close to the ear and listen to it. I wonder if it's design flaw and every xperis S have this issue, or only some of them....
Anyone who got his phone replaced and the new one came WITHOUT the same problem ???

Piotrze, im having same issue and till now i thought its a problem only of mine phone. And till now ive wanted to send it back to service but if everyone has the same issue it might not be accepted at service, idk.

You are absolutly right, however I am very carefull with my phone it is always in a cover and when in a cover a phone should survive a 15-20cm drop without a scratch.
All my other phones ( all SE mostly Xperias ) are ''as new' after one year of use, this phone is not strong enough.
This and all te reports of yellow teint and loose bottoms shows that the XS is not as strong and solid as it feels and has it should
feel sorry for ya .. i know how it feels when a brand new phone keep giving problems. i have always used sony products. my 2 televisions (one lcd and one led), 3 laptops, 2 sony mobile phones (neo v and xperia s), 2 camcorders, playstation 3, walkman, are all from sony. in the neo v, phone security is a built in feature. but in the xperia s, its that ****ti mcafee security that handles the security locking in case ur phone is lost or stolen. that mcafee security is a 7 days trial. what nonsense
sony is getting greedy!

I dropped mine more than a foot onto thin carpet. My phone survived just fine. I am betting it is a fluke or something. You might just have bad hardware.
So far i dropped my phone twice and once from the dining table almost a metre above the wooden floor
Nothing is wrong so far but maybe because my phone has a poly jacket case.
Feel sorry for you. Maybe you need to request a phone change
I think bad hardware to, I sent a mail to sony but so far no reply.
When I get an answer I will post it here, I trust sony to fix it and this time for good.
Hope my phone will be fine... i have no varanty in Russia coz i get Europe phone

20 cm drop is nothing.
Mine dropped from like 40 cm height, and landed on its back. No issues at all. That was two weeks ago, and in any case i noticed longer battery life span :silly:
Must be a problem with the headset itself.

[Q] Xperia Neo Speaker not working

A couple of days ago I updated my Xperia Neo from 2.3.4 Gingerbread to the newest ICS.Well today I woke up with 6 missed calls, because apparently the back speaker stopped working. Not even the slightest bit of sound comes out of it.
Headphones work, "call" speaker works, but the back one just died.I haven't physically "abused" the phone.I dropped it lightly a month ago, but I doubt that's the problem.
Repaired software via PC Companion - still not working, so it must be hardware.I haven't rooted the phone.Haven't tried any speaker mods/apps only the stock Xloud.
The phone is 1 and 1/2 months old and the speaker died already...what the hell is with hardware quality these days...
Any ideas guys?Please help.

most probably a hardware problem.. give it a service ASAP.
The problem is no SE authorized service in my country and sending it to another country just to get the speaker changed...I don't know.
Would it be expensive to find someone who knows what he's doing and get it changed?

yeah..maybe..you could try some help from the recognized contributors.. if its a hardware problem, try finding someone nearby..or just ask for an exchange where you got it.
Have you already tried the service test menu (*#*#4636#*#*)?
So music playback etc also doesn't work, how about touch feedback sounds?
You can also try going back to Gingerbread with flashtool.
Same thing happened to mine a couple of months ago. I sent it for repairs, and the report indicated that the speaker's metal contacts (?) became loose.
I've found people complaining about the same issue on another forum I use to go to. So yeah, unfortunately it seems that the device is poorly built...
i have the same problem here but not totally..

I've had this problem twice - once I missed my alarm in the morning.
Solution was to gently whack the phone against something hard and it's fine again - I've got a case round it so no damage done. I got the phone secondhand so it could've been damaged before I had it.
try plugging in and out the headphones

This is how i fixed mine:
---This is only for fixing the loose connector problem. Luckily, this was my case.
I need to clarify that you don't need to open the whole phone and take it apart. Just the right side panel (The one without any buttons)
1. Remove the back cover. (of course, your phone should already be turned off by now)
2. Remove Battery, sim card, and sd card.
3. Unscrew 6 screws at the back of the phone. (actually, you only need to unscrew 3, but just go with me now)
4. Remove the two plastic side panels.
Take note: side, not front panels.
(and actually, here, the only panel needed to be removed is the right one, the one without buttons)
5. look at the back of the phone. place it in a table in such a way with the speakers near you and the sd card slot away from you.
6. you will see a fine black wire running on the right side panel (after you already removed the plastic panel)
7. It runs from below the sd card slot to the right side of the speakers.
8. take a tool(preferably not sharp)
---The connectors can be seen because there is a small gap/hole where you can see the connector pins.
9. Now, use the tool (i used a small flat screwdriver) to push down the first connector (the one on below the sd card slot)
10. Next, push down the second connector (beside the speaker)
After that, boot up your phone and try playing some music. It should work fine now, if the problem was loose connection.
I notice that I'm a bit too late but i hope this helps anyone else who might encounter this problem.
BTW my phone is NEO V but i think it should be the same with your NEO's. Cheers! :fingers-crossed:
If u need a picture, you can private message me, or i can give u a link from youtube. Just search: disassemble xperia neo or assemble xperia neo. Both helped me in the process. Find the videos by mobi mobirout. That's it!

Gaps and pops in notification sounds

this is how my xperia z ultra (C6833, 4.4.2, 14.3.a.0.757) plays notifications
http://i.imgur.com/iD4VkhE.png
this is supposed to be a 2 second long 1KHz tone at -3 dB, almost maximum volume. A simple signal so one can see it clearly.
there is a gap near the start and a very very loud pop before it starts. The pop is off the scale, much louder than what the device supposedly allows any sound to be.
any ideas?
Does this happen with all the notification sounds? If so, it's a really weird issue.
Sent from my C6833 using Tapatalk
all i have tried so far exhibit this behaviour.
going into diagnostics and doing the earphone and speakerphone test in succession stops the problem
but after half a minute it starts doing it again.
i do not have time to go to a sony center these days, but after next week i will
I've had the same thing on some stock ROMs (I don't recall which). There's no such issue on Paranoid Android.

there is no such issue in the other android phones i had, either
This happens to me too. ...very annoying.
Don't really know what to do about that.
Perhaps someone could write a script that whenever media server starts like with notification or ringtone, it starts in low volume and max out very quickly or to the volume level that the user has set so that it doesn't become that "ascending ringtone" function.
And if media server is already active. Like if you are playing a game or music there would be some environment function that the script does not trigger it self because when media is played and a notification comes on it only lower the volume of that stream so the problem does not involve these scenarios. And when the notification ends the volume of the music is reset to its original volume.
So the problem from what I have experienced is that the cracking sound comes only when media server is inactive and starts up.
This idea would work similar to the "ascending ringtone"function. But this applies to all notification streams and not only ringtones.
This is one solution I can come up with. But I don't know how to implement this in a rom.
This might eliminate this pop-cracking sound right before the sound of an notification or ringtone plays
One suggestion is perhaps to make this to a module that installs and activates with Xposed framework?
edit: Oh forgot to mention. Im on slimkat rom with pimped kernel. But it does the same with any other kernel or rom
don't want to ruin it for you but the pop *will* happen, no matter if the volume starts low or high.
i measured it with the volume at the minimum (but not zero) volume. the pop is still there, still louderthan the max volume.
i wonder if we can bring charges against sony for this. we've set the volume to a certain level and the phone not only ignores it but it also produces a sound louder than what is normally possible on the device. *much* louder, not just "quite louder". we're talking four times louder.
Bring charges...
God I hate that sort of attitude. If you have a defective device send it in for repair.

few people report this issue, mostly because they do not understand the gravity of it. I'd wager most peoples' xzu do have this issue.
and i bet that sony will not even admit to it being a defect... come friday i will have an answer from them... i bet five bucks to you they will not even consider it to be a problem. Yes, five US dollars, i will paypal them to you if sony does NOT admit that gaps and pops are a defect.

Mine doesn't have this issue, so it's not normal. If ROM flashing doesn't solve it, it's not a software issue - but hardware, SO AGAIN; use your warranty. I'm not seeing the problem here.

wait, the bet should be that i send you 5 bucks if they DO admit it is a defect worthy of replace/repair. i messed it up.

this is how the ringtone sounds from the headphones.
could you hook up your z ultra to the line in of your computer, set the default ringtone to this https://soundcloud.com/tsiros-1/tone , have music playing on the z ultra, record it on the pc and then call your phone? i want to see the behaviour of your phone

I'm not going to bother doing that, but I can tell you right now, like I've already said several times, that I do definitely NOT have this issue. That my friend is not normal.

yes you do, you just don't notice it.
when 4.4.4 rolls out, you will see in the changelog that they fixed an issue with gaps and pops at the start of notification sounds.
