Hi folks of XDA!
I'm from Canada and I just ordered my Nexus 9 on Sunday through Amazon.com as it is the cheapest way to do it. My question is, will I be obtaining a November-made Nexus 9 rather than the October-made Nexus 9? I'm only asking as most of you may know, the power and volume buttons may have been slightly "fixed" from minor altercations made in the November-made Nexus 9's. There also may be a bit of less light bleeding in these Nexus's and I don't want to have to return it or have a undesirable experience with this tablet.
I understand I can check once I get it but I won't be getting it anytime soon because I chose the cheapest way to get it delivered

A replacement should arrive on Friday (12/05).

Ah... I praise the all mighty nexus lords that I won't have to deal with extreme light bleeding or recessed power and volume buttons...
If anyone has ordered on the black friday deal, can they let me know if their product is OCT/NOV and how their buttons and lightbleeding (if any) are?
I ordered nine on Friday, got it Monday and it was made November 4th. Bleed problems is terrible, the buttons are recessed, the back pops badly, and it gets extremely hot. I'm definitely going to return it. I have until Jan 15th, so I'm going to push it and then return it then so hopefully I get a later run.

The "code":
1) find your serial number (either on the sticker on the back, sticker on box, or in settings>about tablet>status>serial number).
2) Note the first 5 digits. Also note this super secret magical key:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31
Where 1-Z corresponds with the numbers 1 through 31. This is how the date is encoded in the s/n.
3) Third digit is the year. It probably is a 4, meaning your tablet was made in 2014.
4) Fourth digit the month. It probably is an A or B, meaning your tablet was made in the 10th or 11th month.
5) Fifth digit is the date. For example, if you have a s/n that says, HT4B7, that means it was made on November 7th 2014. If it says HT4AW, then it was made October 28th, 2014. And so on.

Just got mine this afternoon, ordered Saturday with two day shipping. Got one made in Oct 17th. Pretty bad light bleed in corners and asking left side of screen, but no mushy back. Volume down is tactile but volume up had no click. Also processor gets very hot and tablet charges very slow actually discharges during use with provided brick and cable. 16gb white.

Thanks guys for your input! I decided to go with the white Nexus 9 (32GB) and with the slowest type of shipping due to it not being free for us Canadians (it'll ship within 7-12 days). I hope I don't get anything with huge defects...
If anyone else sees this and got their Nexus 9 through the black friday deals from Amazon.com; I'd like to know how their tablet is! :highfive:
For reference, the newest one I got from Amazon, shipped on Tuesday, 12/02, has the janky power button and doesn't respond to the magnetic cover properly. Sometimes unlock the display results in it relocking instantly (as if it had a magnetic cover on it). Closing the cover on the case doesn't turn the screen off nor does opening it turn it back on. I'll likely request another replacement once the last one reaches Amazon's RMA department. This one was made on 10/21.

Got my Transformer Prime on Monday, and just started playing with it today. Right off the bat, I notice that on white screens there is a blank white 'dot' that takes up a couple of pixels. It's almost like there is a hole in the screen, but you can't see it when the pixels are black. I attached a picture (to the right of the word 'medicine' - more noticeable in person).
Here's the conundrum - if I return it to Amazon, I will probably have to wait another month or however long before I get the tablet. If I keep the tablet, I'll probably be irritated with this white dot hovering on all my screens.
What to do! I'm assuming this is a hardware issue? Does anybody know how to figure out what it is?
UPDATE: Talked to Amazon. Only recourse is to send the tablet back. Estimated delivery date for a replacement is Jan 25th - Feb. 8th 2012.
UPDATE 2: Spoke too soon - an Amazon representative has placed an order for another Prime at $0, so that I can return my current one when I get the replacement. So I'm not without a tablet for months. Have to say, I'm impressed.

My OCD would never let me live with that. i would suggest you return it once the stock is up. most stores give you 2 weeks for returns.
Play with it for now, you might find other defects too.
I'd live with it and write it off as part of the perils of an early adoption.
Looks like some stuck pixels and you can try the following:
-Massage the area with light pressure.
-Grab or view a animated stuck pixel image (google it)
-or...it can go away on it's own after a little time.
other then that swap it out or just wait it out and see if it doesn't just go away.

I'm OCD for sure, but this is definitely noticeable. Not a catastrophe... but even my wife noticed.

Light pressure doesn't work, at least for the minute I did it.
Trying JScreenFix app for 10 minutes. Will keep my fingers crossed. <--- Didn't work. Still there. But maybe got better?
pressure on the screen wont help. thats a manufacturing defect. It appears amazon offered you the best possible solution.
Now you can enjoy your prime, while the rest of us wait for stock

FWIW, I have a dead pixel on my nook color tablet. It bothered me a lot at the beginning, but now I don't even notice it. But great that Amazon is taking care of that.
BTW, a swallowed pen in her stomach for 25 years!? I'd like to know what she was thinking when the doctor didn't believe that she swallowed the pen: "Hmm... well, OK, I'll just deal with this pen in my stomach." Lol!
Go Amazon! And this is why I like them. Far better to deal with Amazon than anyone on eBay. I wonder how many of these tablets will have little screen quirks like that. I hope it's extremely limited. I know ASUS doesn't make the screens themselves.
Either way, Amazon is hooking you up. I can't believe everything is pre-order right now. I think by the time I get my prime ICS will be available on it.

What are you gonna do about it? It's irritating me to see this little white dot all the time. What's weird is that it's not visible on black, and worst when it's white.

Gonna exchange it in-store in a few weeks if it doesn't somehow go away on its own. I can't simply ignore this. It's exactly the same as you are saying... very frustrating.
Mine came in today, just opened it and of course it has zero charge, ugh.
When plugged in, the screen turns on for a split second to show the charging icon, then turns off... but in that split second, I can already see one dead white pixel, and a blotch that looks simaler to the OP's... I'l have to wait until it fully charges so I can really examine it more, but not looking good... and I ordered mine from BestBuy, bah!
Just curious if anyone who was experiencing this issue has seen it improve. Didn't have a chance to check mine before I left for work this AM.

I just returned mine at Best Buy. I will wait until next month to try my luck at a Prime from another batch. Such a bummer. I didn't want to keep it too long and end up getting stuck with it somehow (read: accidentally damaging it).

Just got my Prime from Best Buy. I haven't seen anyone post this but I noticed with the screen on or off, I can see miniature tiny dots all over the screen grouped in about 32 columns and 60 rows. Is this normal or do I have a defective screen? It's quite noticeable when I tilt it around with the screen off and a light on overhead as you can see the dots in the reflection.
Didn't notice that on mine for the few hours I had it man.

Yep, all was well for 22 days. No glitches on updates, WIFI was not exceptional but on par with my Droid X, GPS worked pretty good. Tiny little bit of light bleed under the virtual home and menu buttons area, but nothing that was bothersome. But, that all changed tonight when I noticed a big light bleed at the top and then I noticed the screen separating from the top of tablet for a good 3 inches or so. The tablet shipped on the 27th and I got it on the 4th. So, I called Best Buy and they said the 30 day return window would begin on the 4th. So I get to go return this thing tomorrow and hope the store agrees to the return window. I know this could be a fluke, but I am really leary of getting another Prime now.
Edit...really tired... I meant 25 days.....

It is 30 days for all xmas purchases made between like nov 26 and dec 23 i believe, no matter electronics, tabs, computers, etc. That 30 days starts from date of shipping.

Wow I finally got my third one last week and it seems fine right now. I hope that doesn't happen to me. Such a great tablet when it works.
Well, I don't know what will happen. I am a reward zone member. It is past the 14 days, but at 25 days the screen starts to seperate from the back and now is almost seperated all the way across the top with the glass actually bent slightly as if 3/4 of the glue did not hold. I have never dropped it, always keep in the case when not in use, and no one else has touched thing.
I noticed it last night as I finished up a session of GTA 3 when the screen had a big light bleed at the top all of sudden. As I went to investigate, I heard the screen creak, then I see the gap. I called Best Buy and they said I could take it back to a store today and get another....I have my doubts...but it's worth a shot.
I don't want to RMA it as I have not heard good things about the process and I sure as hell don't want a repaired tablet either. I think they need to replace it. But, I have a sinking feeling that I will be mailing the thing to a service center today. I taken all kinds of pictures of it.
Has anyone who sent theirs in and had to pay the postage, gotten the postage refunded it if turned out to be a product defect? I think paying for postage for a defective product it bull****. That's like buying a car, having the door or wheel fall of a month later and then having to pay the towing bill. I can understand paying upfront, but I think you should get reimbursed if the issue is due to a product defect.
Can you post a picture of where the screen is "separating"? Mine is doing that too but it's only at a very sharp angle I even notice. Like 170* angle

Best Buy shot me down as I figured...so now I get to send it Texas. Hope they don't smash mine like they did that other guy. I did get them to give me prepaid shipping.

I have this same problem not as extream as the OP but its there i can feel the screen depress back into place when i put my finger on the spot. I talked to support they are going to ship it out and fix it (got them to pay). Not sure if it will ever get worse but i'd rather take care of it before it gets as bad as the OP. I am sending mine out next friday. I hope i have better experience then that one guy. I took plenty of pics with dates and stuff so hopefully in the event of any problem i'm covered.
Yeah, I obviously took pics too after seeing the smashed prime thread. I just don't get it either....one minute its fine, and then boom, it's seperating. No gradual seperating, just all of a sudden.
Could it be that the battery inside is bulging up/expanding which is causing the two halves to seperate?

That's exactly what I was thinking when I look at the pictures, weirf it would seperate in the middle and not an edge.

Well, you may be right, but since I am trying to get it fixed and not void the warranty, I'm not going to investigate it too much by trying to get better view inside. I never noticed it being hot during use or charging though. Though I will say the batter did start declining much more rapidly the last couple of days.
Do you not have any consumer protection laws in your country? In the UK, this would be the store's issue to fix.

Not so in the US. Best Buy washes their hands of tablet issues after 14 days. Then you have to the manufacturer. Some retailers have different policies but this is pretty much the norm. I am hopeful ASUS will replace the whole tablet. I don't have warm fuzzies about a repaired unit, but we will have to see. I will be sending it off in about an hour. Shame, because I really liked using it.

Just so you prepare yourself. This will prolly take a month at least before you get it back. I sent mine Jan 8th and still not fixed. Gary's team is sending me a new one as we speak. Hope it goes much faster!
So, back in Nov-2011, ordered the rezound.
and since then ..........
1. New, Nov 2011 rev XA overheating constantly
2. Refurb Spring 2012 rev XE wifi stopped working
3. Refurb Nov 2012 no rev # touch screen stopped working
4. Refurb Feb 2013 rev XA overheating constantly again
5. Refurb Mar 2012 rev E lcd looks like CRT that is warming up- lines from top to bottom 24/7 & LCD at full bright is still dim.
6. will be here on monday.... we'll see how this goes.

Exactly the reason why I'd rather overlook an issue (like pinkish capacitive buttons or some light leakage) and stick with the one I got new rather than ask for a refurb. Any issues I may have w a new device hopefully show up in first 30 days of purchase so I can still request another new one. Had very bad luck myself with droid 2 clnrs. Sort to hear about your troubles, hope the next one will be solid.
Oh man, I'm getting my 2nd one today and I'm starting to regret it already...hopefully we'll all magically get perfect phones from now on.

I'm pretty sure they don't lose too much money from the clnr's and shipping. I mean the casing for the phone doesn't cost much and all the internals are refurbished generally. Plus they have a shipping agreement with Fedex and use ground now for return shipping as opposed to 2 day. If they were losing considerable money from the CLNR program they probably would be much more stringent about how many devices they hand out.
I'm on my third.
1st one randomly lost ability to connect to CDMA networks.
2nd one was stolen.
3rd (current) one heats up a lot, but I'm not going to return it unless it becomes an issue.

Got my one-and-only before that. Black Friday sale @ Costco online... ZERO issues.
Got my 3rd today....top of the screen is loose, no data (3g or 4g), and proximity sensor doesn't work. I'm not holding my breath for #4 to be up to par. I don't like being jerked around...
I'm on my 4th Rez.
My 1st was a CLN to replace a series of Droid Charges that had all sorts of problems (Which was a replacement to cover my LG revolutions that would brick themselves in the middle of the night while charging).
That developed issues with charging port
2nd replacement had bad screen.
3rd replacement was fine, but it dropped and screen cracked.
Replacement for that had a non functioning compass.
This one seems to be fine. Everything works and GPS is with 9 feet when I'm outside. Hopefully this is my last Rezound.
I think I've had 7. Still on number 2 though because it has far less issues than any of the other ones did. I had a camera problem that doesn't appear to exist anymore, and my speaker is a tad weaker than some of the other ones I've gotten. But no issues otherwise. Never gets hot either. Light bleeding is also less on this one than any others I've gotten.
My replacements ranged from dead pixels to screen burn (or some kind of shadowing under the display), borked proximity sensors, hot pink keys, over heating and shutting off on the charger... Basically a fail all around. Shame shame. I'm still not sure what I'm going to have them do for me, they've given me 2 months of service for almost nothing with me asking for or accepting it... That was a nice surprise lol. I know now though to be more thorough about inspecting my phone when I get it so I get brand new replacements and not clnrs. Of course this is the only phone I've ever had a problem with other than my first blackberry curve glitching out. And I had a really old Nokia phone that the keys wore out on after a few months (it was a cheap one though, one of the first flip phones with 2 displays) Lol.
Got my #4 and it works but the screen is loose on the top (again!) so that messes with the proximity sensor..
I also had a lot of drama returning my 3rd one today. I left out the package for the mailman (apartment complex with a gated front door). It has build date Nov 22, 2014 (HT4BN) This should be one of the newer builds, right?
But I'm also worried about light bleed and if Office Depot will allow me to return it. They claim to have a 100% satisfaction guarantee but I've never tried to use it.
I bought it in the recent online sale. But I'm concerned about getting involved in this light bleed mess.
why buy if you're not gonna open it. if it's 100% satisfaction then just return if you don't like it. no questions, nothing. if they ask why you don't need to answer or just say you're not satisfied. i've never had problems returning stuff.. except to bestbuy when they blacklisted me (but there's work arounds for that, lol).
I bought it on a whim, and then started over thinking it. Opening it now!

I can already see the light bleed in the lower left corner while it's installing upgrades. LOL

Yeah, that's exactly where I get the worst light bleed too. I also have a white N9 16GB that I ordered from Amazon Dec. 12 2014, S/N HT4BB. Mine also has the button problem.
BTW - where do you find the build date? I don't see it on the box or the tablet.

I've seen brand new N9's, including sand, that have recessed buttons and some "light bleed", and I've seen old ones that are nearly perfect. I've determined that there is no such thing as a magic date after which all Nexus 9's are flawless. I personally have a white 32gb from the first few weeks of production and it's nearly perfect. The volume up is a little more recessed than I'd like, but it works perfectly fine. The only time I can see this light bleed is during a reboot before the screen dims, or when installing updates when the screen is brighter than the max brightness with the OS booted up. I never notice it during regular use. My advice would be open the thing and love it. Cause it's an awesome tablet, even with it's quirks!

I completely agree. If you have lightbleed that is TOO much to handle, you really shouldnt have too much difficulty returning it. Lots of people had issues, they are expecting it by now.
Uh, you bought it to use it.... you should probably open it... I'm not sure what the alternative is for you.
My 6P arrived defective today *UPDATE* perfect replacement received < 24 hrs later

Google overnighted a replacement unit i received yesterday and all is good. was just one of the unlucky ones!
The screen was not installed correctly. it is pushed too far to the bottom leaving a large gap in between the top of the black plastic and the metal frame. at the bottom the screen is pushed up over the metal lip and no flush with the device.
now i wait until next week to get my replacement...hopefully

tell me about it. i used to work retail and we sold the cheap Huawei prepaid phones so I was concerned about them making the 6P...then all the reviews about how premium and well built it is....now this

It happens with every manufacturer. My wife had her MacBook sent in 4 times until they finally just replaced practically everything, and now her power button on her iPhone is unresponsive.

Not true bro, there's always a finite number of devices in every release that have had issues. Happens every time. Even after the initial batches.
Got my Nexus 6P and starting to think that there is somthing wrong with the colour? like the top half is more pinkish and the bottom half is white...

Yeah, I agree with the first/early batch statements. My Nexus 6 was a fi3st batch and had burn in issues and my LG G4 is a first batch and has the infamous touchscreen issues.
I promised myself to fight off impatience and never buy a phone on release again. I'll wait a month or two so they can work out any possible kinks.
First batches can be more problematic than later ones, but it's not always the case (as Tony_stark said earlier). In my 1st day Nexus experience:
N4 (x2 16gb), perfect;
N5 (x5, 16gb & 32gb) 4 perfect, 1 with dodgy charger, replacement perfect (and no button issues on any, although the lower volume than later ones was noticeable, errrrm... later, once they were released);
N7 (x1 16gb) faulty with screen lift like yours, the replacement the same, 2nd replacement perfect.
N7 (2013, x1 16gb) perfect.
Early adopters are guinea pigs, and our issues and feedback do add to the later device. It doesn't mean the first batches are bad, just more likely to show issues, in part due to the relatively small numbers of very focused buyers.
Still, it's always unsettling to receive one that's not perfect. Hope your replacement is perfect!
