Ok, so I bought a SM-G8508S on craigslist. Seems like an interesting phone and I like the samsungs.
So, clearly the previous owner has messed around with it. A precursory search didnt seem to bring anything up. When I try and go into whats typically a download mode, I get "factory mode" in times new roman, and then the chinese/korean/etc menu I posted here. Can anyone tell me what exactly this is, and if there is an odin recovery for it?

So I'm wondering if I got one pulled over on me on this one.
The BOX says SM-G850F, but the sticker on the phone say G8508S. Also the IMEI on the sticker doesnt match the IMEI in the ROM. The software is also running like crap. Sad day, but glad I didnt pay too much.

if you have that phone, non of the methods that are posted here will help you and i would suggest that you don't mess with that phone unless you get clear instructions for that particular fake phone

After all this comolaining from you on every thread about Galaxy Alpha, i'm begining to think that you were flanked with a fake also. I'm still waiting for another single person to sexond your remarks (besides the screen tone).
I took a small magnifyuing glass the other day and tries to look for dots you mention on the screen and i had to be disapointed - couldn't find any, the images/text is so smooth

sorry about the typo. it seems it got you a bit nervous. it's a typo that you could easily guess from comPlaining. and i see what i'm typing i just don't use spell checker and sometimes things like that slip.
i don't think the display is so crappy as to have someone so mad about it. and for this issue, i suggest you open a polling/voting thread and collect the opinions of other people also. just because someone doesn't find it justifiable to reply to you back on that, doesn't mean they agree with you.
and no, i didn't CAPITO. if you like so much IPS screen, why do you even buy a Samsung device? i know that almost all their phones are with Amoled displays (i've had Amoled since Galaxy S2). everybody knows what are the pro's and con's of Amoled, and colors/tones being not to everybody's taste. i personally think this is why they have the dropped sales this year and i hope they understand this issue and change it

in Samsung Amoled devices there is an option called Screen Mode. did you check the different modes? i use Amoled Basic and i have decent colors/tones. i also turn off "Auto adjust screen tone" and "voila" i'm a happy and proud Galaxy Alpha owner. (voila is a french word used as a synonim to = here it is, unveiled.

man i repair phones , iphones , dont worry i know what screen mode is.. it is about collor saturation and richness .. that wont help have white actually white.. if u have new TVs lg or sony , samsung ull find u can increase degrease color temperature picture below ..

SM-G8508S isn't a fake Alpha but it is the specific model for China market so what you see is the Chinese word.

Ok, so I sold my iPhone 4 in anticipation of the 5. While looking around came across the SGS2. Looked very nice so I got one. My first mistake was buying from pictures and not holding the device in my hand. From the moment I took the battery cover off, it's not been good. This thing feels like it should have cost £50 on ebay, it's just soo plastic and so thin, I'm afraid that when at work (i'm an engineer so lots of bending, squatting, laying etc) it's going to snap in two in my pocket. It's just "laggy" and "buggy" the keyboard is unresponsive, it feels like a resistive device, I have to knock it into and out of flight mode every few hours as it seems to lose it's data connection, touchwiz is just butt ugly, apps are butt ugly.
I love the "openness" of android, I love the "geekiness" and customisability of it. I love the fact I have 48GB of storage (even if the phone refuses to use the extra 32GB in any decent way)
I have had this phone for about 4-5 days and already I find myself picking it up to play with and throwing it back down again without unlocking the screen.
So, I have come here for some decent advice. I couldn't ask this question in an iPhone forum because the responses would be very biased, but, I have found on this forum, you generally get people's honest, unbiased opinion.
Should I get rid of this phone and wait for the iPhone 5? the one thing I miss about the iPhone is although it didn't necessarily do everything, what it did do worked, the apps I used looked good, the device felt well built and was always responsive. Am I expecting too much from the SGS2? will I get used to it? will I grow to love it?
feedback especially welcome from anyone that has came from an iPhone 4 to a SGS2 and can see my point of view?!

From what I read, it looks like you are a real iPhone user. As a friend speaking, I would recommend you to go buy your phone as you will never be happy with another non-Apple device. Is the same like telling a BMW lover that Audi is better, he will still dream of the next M3 model. Asking advice here will not get you unbiased responses as we all love the S2, as well Android.
For example, I don't think at all the S2 feels like a cheap device. In fact, it contains top technology that blows any current phone on the market. Personally, I believe that Samsung hardware is better than iPhone and even if iPhone 5 is released it will not beat the current S2 at any level. Not to mention that Samsung will release another model that will make iPhone 5 look like a cheap toy.
What matters most is your opinion, not ours. Who cares if we like better the S2, what matters is what you like to use on a daily basis. If the iPhone makes you happier, go for it.

Just wanted to add my recent device history is, htc hero>htc desire>iPhone 3gs (binned it and went back to desire)>iPhone 4>SGS2
so if anything, I've spend a LOT longer on android that ios I'm not a "real" iPhone user, I'm a "realist" be that on android or ios

For a Sammy GS2 you need to be a FlashAholic and be able to handle the user freedom of modding and stuff (this part makes the GS2 for me the place to be and never go for a iphone).
On topic, that backplate is very solid though it look fragile, seen some tests on youtube with tons of extreme bending and folding, it was still in perfect afterwards.
In fairness this poster doesn't seem like your average Apple fanboy who appear on these forums from time to time talking crap i do believe this poster is genuine.
Coming from an iPhone to Android is a bit like having sex for the first time a very new experience and for some it's excellent and for others it's not been as good.
What former iPhone users who have just "graduated" to Android have to understand is that it is a very different concept, not everything is spick and span and ready to go, you do have to take a bit of time out and customize your phone and apply various tweaks,etc,etc,etc, eventually your Galaxy S2 will be absolutely amazing,read up on here extensively, for a start i highly recommend downloading Titanium Backup PRO and freezing all Samsung Apps your battery life will increase ten fold, it goes without saying you should root your phone and apply a custom ROM, there are many good ROM's personally the best ive ever had is the one in my signature, there can be no denying that the Galaxy S2 blows any other smartphone out of the water but don't just take my view for it or people on these forums one only has to read the countless reviews from trusted Tech websites online to tell you this,Android is the way forward why do you think they are continually outselling iPhones, people are finally realising that open source and being able to flash custom ROM's and customize your phone is the way to go rather than be locked down to whatever Apple tell you.
To conclude - OP take a lot of time to read what is on these forums, i spent 3 weeks reading up here before i even had a Galaxy S2 so id would be more clued up and know what to do to make your phone even more amazing.

OP, all the faults you mention, (apart from the feeling plastic bit which is subjective and took me a little while to get used to how light and thin this phone is), are not generally in most peoples phones. Where did you buy it from as it sounds more likely that you have a faulty one to me. You could try factory resetting it and seeing if that helps but if you bought it new id get it swapped asap if i were you.
If you dont like the keyboard, download a different one. I use smart keyboard pro and that has a iphone style keypad that works perfectly well. Not sure what you mean by the apps are butt ugly though. Do you mean just the icons or you cant find apps you like? As for touchwiz, use a different launcher. I like launcher pro but a lot of people prefer GOlauncher.
The beauty of android is you customise it how you wish to, not how apple wishes you to.
But first things first you need to sort out the laggy and buggy aspect as that shouldnt be there.
i was like yourself. sold my iphone 4 which i loved to death and i pimped it up through jailbreaking it and was looking for which phone to go next...The S2 was the one for me. Picked it up when it first came and my first thoughts were what a piece of plastic ****....
But i have grown to love it. with a good case it feels solid in your hands and the size of the screen is just about right. funnily enough i even swapped it in the start for a htc sensation but because i could not customise it with roms i wanted this bad boy back straight away.. now i have it i cant live with out it.
So many new phones are coming out now but i will eagerly await when the S3 comes out. The handset does what i want it to do, it has HD recording and plenty of space in the memory department..
So my advice give it time and you will grow to love it...But if you feel that its not right for you then sell it and get the iphone when it comes out...I for one turned from the darkside to the light

I run the latest KI3 2.3.5 stock firmware and there is a difference from day and night, compared to KG2 that my phone came with. Android evolves so fast and with every new release is so much better that is hard to even keep up with it. Hell, other companies would of probably label that version 2.4.0, not just a minor bug release.
I wish every company would dedicate their efforts in perfecting software like Google does. Let's look at performance differences between 2.3.4 and 2.3.5, is incomparable. Quadrant pushes at 4200+ on S2, the phone is smooth as silk and super responsive while the battery life is further improved. What more could I ask for?

Congrats op, you just described my exact feelings about every Samsung phone I've ever looked at. A little advice: get a HTC phone, root it, and flash miui. You'll never go back to apple.

I also plan on flashing a new rom, to get away from the stock. It may well be what is responsible for the "buggy" experience I'm having (especially seeing as several of you say this isn't normal )
On that subject, is there a favourite rom I can try? I've had a look around and am a little confused, i.e. different kernels, kernels separate from rom's, cyanogen, miui??? I rooted the phone with cf's root, but then that isn't compatible with rom manager? litening rom looks quite good?!
when I had my desire I dont remember having kernels separate from rom's, or having to check compatibility. Anyone know of a good re-introduction type thread or blog etc which explains all this stuff?

if you check on each roms thread in the first page it has all the answers to the questions you have regarding installing the rom on their buddy. have a look and do a bit of research and you be good to go...no point me saying which rom is best and how you install it go into the development sections and go on to the rom you fancy and read through the first pages
just a quick update guys, I installed litening rom and only been using it for 10 mins but the difference if like night and day, now the phone is fast and responsive. I can type a quickly and accurately as with the my ole iphone.
so... seems maybe a lot of the issues were a fault with my carrier branded stock rom. Thanks for identifying this for me guys. I also bought a nice lil case from amazon, it's nothing supreme but built well, with a built in flip out stand so, now the phone feels a lot better in the hand.
Quite a bit happier now, I really appreciate the time a lot of you took to help what probably seemed like (to use a linuxism) YAIFT (yet another iphone fanboi troll)

Lol... I used iPhone for a year, I understand what you're going through, but the freedom is amazing here with android. It's your device, do what you feel like with it, change complete os, launchers, lockscreens, skies the limit
You should give miui a shot as well, I love it and highly recommend it.

I'm an expert in going off topic (especially in the dev section), and i'm getting fairly sick of my own behavior, so i thought, why not create a casual thread where we can chat about every aspect of the Ultra without crashing a thread?

- Talk about whatever you want as long as it is about your device. Rooting, flashing, questions etc.
So, i rooted my ZU yesterday and i'm very happy with it. I installed Xposed Frameworks and changed some DPIs around (i wanted Chrome in tablet mode etc.). Have you rooted your Ultra, or are you waiting? Or something totally different?

Have you tried ParanoidAndroid or CM? I haven't yet, but i guess i'll flash one or both of them fairly soon, but i'm actually very pleased with the Sony ROM. It's stable (if we ignore the few bugs in it), i like the launcher, i love the Movie, Gallery and Music app (never ever thought that would be the case), and it's not heavily skinned like TW or the other trainwreck that is also known as LG.

I haven't yet. I'll do when CWM/TWRP is available for .532
Also, I couldn't agree more. Sony's UI is very pleasing indeed. To say, even my friends with S3s and S4s have flashed the ROMs with Sony's launcher.
I actually flashed the Sony launcher on my Note, but that felt.. wrong? So i went straight back to CM It's a different story now though! Did you get the dock bundled with your Ultra btw? What do you think of it? I wish it was a little heavier so i could just pull the Ultra out of it, but it's so light that i have to hold the dock when i pull it now. I guess i could open it and stuff it with something heavy (like lead?).

I guess I'll unlock the bootloader and root right away when my phone comes back from service.
I'm so desperate to have it back I went to a store today to see and try it and I brought with me a leaflet... :sad:
Anyway, I agree also, the Sony launcher is amongst the lightest I've seen, and it would be a burden to even install Nova or Go or something else.
AND, I was posting the same topic after reading your reply on the kernel one, so you got here first.
I'll share my sadness every single day my device is away, and worst of it is next week I'll receive the watch and SBH52, they'll throw them self out of the window when they'll see their present companion.......... The Mighty LG 2X............

I installed Nova three days ago. I have Prime, so i want to get my money's worth, but it doesn't look quite right? The app drawer looks normal, but the screen of the Ultra is so big, and the resolution is so high that the default app grid is set to 6x7 or something, which looks kind of ridiculous IMO. SO many icons! I changed it to something more normal like 5x6, but that looked absolutely ridiculous. I will choose Nova in the end, but i'm perfectly comfortable with Sony's launcher at this time, so i won't change it yet.

I guess marble would work too, yes. It would've been easy if i had marble floors, and had a piece left some place, but i have hardwood floors, and that won't cut it. I do however have a "piece" of lead, so that might work. I won't start with project Lead Dock today though, since i've had a couple of beers, and i've learned that it's not the smartest thing to start with a new project while having alcohol in my blood "Hey dude, that 1080 on roller skates looks easy! Hold my beer!"
Luvin the Ultra!! Had prime also but went back to stock. I had rooted it earlier on but went back.just waiting for a Rom that has some options for music. Had note 2 with Jedi x and was using voodoo sound..awesome app..i can get the volume up with headphones and keep it clear. hoping eventually something similar.

After 2 days on Sony Rom I was pleasantly surprised (had sgs3 gt9300 before xzu) Now on PA and for a 1st beta its very smooth and stable. One thing I will say is though, I cant shake the feeling that sound (eg music thru headphones) is not a sharp/clear on PA and the display isnt as crisp on PA either . Ive backed up my TA partition stuff so will go back and check at some stage.

I broke my S2 display today as a result of falling from table to the ground :crying: I am thinking of buying a new phone ( which I really dont want to ) So are there any phones with almost same specifications? I am not a fan of big screen so screen size same as S2 would suffice and I want it to be as slim as S2. S2 has a lot of support from cyanogenmod or XDA, so need a phone with similar support. I know its a lot of requirements but I have been so much accustomed to S2 so I need any other phone exactly like it.

Ambient display will not be there for sure.
Also the Flashlight toggle in notification bar. That option won't be there for us as it would be useless.

Exactly...considering L update on moto x ...it has both ambient display and moto ac display... So its quite sure that we are going to have ambient display.
Now the only thing that i fear that how L will perform on our low end moto e , just hope it wont be laggy... Haha

I had seen a review of L 5.0 of n4, in that review the person said that yes , n4 responces quite quickly as n5 does on its L build, hope low end devices, that are going to get the taste of l also performs the same, atleast unnoticeable lags...
...and even 2gb usable internal storage is worrying me alot, u all know abt ART, even though the sd card permissions are back, i don't actually know how they going to help us...

He didnt actually bought me a new one, he just managed my cell to get replaced (and he denying me from telling from where actually he did, :crying

Galaxy S3 previously, now a Moto X 2014 as my daily driver.... E as the guinea pig...
Trust me, ambient display won't be there.PERIOD. It's only for the high end phones... Even if your phone supports it, the OEM won't support it for low range devices.... Take my word....

But it will mak our device battery hungrier because we have an lcd display. Only amoled screens will be benefited with that feature.
I love this phone. I really do, and frankly, **** verizon for making me so scared to hold out on it. I already have the "software status: modified" in the about section, without doing anything to provoke it and a vzw manager tried to tell me my 3 day old phone was out of warranty, thankfully tech-support knows just as little, and they claimed that any non demo model would have the "modified tag" and they marked in my account that the modified status would have no bearing on my warranty. This is the kind of thing I just dont want to deal with around something I own.
BIGGEST CONCERN: vzw V10 marshmallow. do we have any guarantee of when or if it will arrive?
It is pretty sad that a carrier has me wanting to trade in my beautiful phone, for a 6P that is lower powered and less of what I want hardware wise. Thanks for the help guys
The Verizon V10, like all V10s, will be getting Marshmallow. There is no guaranteed date.
You don't need to switch phone but you do need to switch carriers.

While I'm on Verizon also and agree with most of ur points the 6P is actually not lowered powered. It has a 810, bigger battery and better battery life, fingerprint sensor, all aluminum body, front speakers and louder ones, newest software at ur will, while the camera ain't as gd probably it's still very comparable. To be honest I'm getting V10 but have my doubts and probably will end up with a 6P but we will see, maybe LG will win me over.

But the V10 has a removable/replaceable battery,expandable memory,OIS and supposedly getting wireless charging very soon,probably a better camera and is shock/vibration made. Plus Verizon gave me $300 for a Blu POS I had laying around and with the LG promotion with a free 200gb memory card and extra battery and battery charger it was a no brainer. PS and quick charging

Oh I agree very valid points, I'm going with the promo to so yeah no brainer I figured it was worth trying out. I'm not knocking the phone at all, the build quality looks amazing and feels amazing and I'm one that favors LGs skin but I also like vanilla as well. I'm just saying there's a lot of positives on the 6p as well. As far as battery life the LG will get better once it gets marshmallow. I got the Nexus 6 and doze is amazing. I usually charge my phone at night and take it off the charger every morning but with MM the phone sleeps very good, I usually go to bed around 11 with 100% and wake up at 6 with either 100% or 99%. Nexus 6P has quick charging to (not as quick) and USB type C.
Seems to be convincing enough

That was fake, total tech and droidmodderx tried to bend it with no success. Also I never understood this bending issue with the iPhone. How in the hell do u bend a phone? You ain't suppose to sit on the damn thing, any phone that is for that matter. I just never understood the bending hype. U can give me any phone out there and it won't bend cause I use my phone how a "normal person" would.

The V10 will get Marshmallow.. Your biggest concern should be that the Nexus doesn't have a removable battery and if you are like me you want to keep your music on a microsd card! The best part is when zerolemon will release their extended battery for this phone. But if you want to be cool like all those wall hugging Iphone users BE my guest.

What this guy said. Ditched Verizon as soon as T-mobile's uncarrier initiative happened. Had verizon 7 years and hated it the whole time. Gets in the way of anything good that can happen to your phone. Have to say though, reception was great. Extremely greedy carrier

There are tons of threads/forums/reddits/blogs that have info on this phone and other phones..read them just like we did and make your decision based on YOUR needs, not ours.
I had a z ultra which bent in my front pocket after a while. I baby all my stuff but that phone bent because it was too big and poorly engineered.
