Should I get a Nexus 9? - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im looking for a tablet to replace my laptop and nexus 7 (2012)
My work load will be videos (On occasions) youtube, some light gaming, word processing (With keyboard) web browsing, spotify.
I am a student so it will be for work mostly with it all backed up to google cloud, for films I will OTG them over to the device so I don't use onboard storage.
I was looking at the Tab S 8.4 but I love Nexus and been very up to date.
So what is the battery life like for the Nexus 9 under a medium work load using office stuff, when I am gaming I will be near a plug.
So should I get a Nexus 9 or the Tab S?
Many thanks!

I only used Word on my N9 for a short time, but it works okay. Many 365/2010 features are absent on the Android version, so I'm not sure if it would replace your laptop usage. With my light usage 8hrs was the max I ever saw, when using it frequently 5-6.5hrs of SOT was typical. One thing you should consider is the battery life of your current laptop, as well as compatibility with whatever programs.

My usage for word is light, using google docs mostly and the battery life on my laptop on light use is at best 4 hours so nothing amazing I never feel truly portable

I would go with a surface pro 3 instead of a nexus 9. I own both.

Well the N9 will be able to last more than that for word.

A Surface is more expensive AND larger than a N9, don't think he wants such a device. The experience of using either as a tablet differs too, since Android is a lot more user friendly in that regard.

I would definitely recommend getting a Nexus 9. However, something to keep in mind is that it was released about 8 months ago and the two previous Nexus tablets, namely Nexus 7 (2012) and Nexus 7 (2013) were released about 1 year apart. This means that there may be a new Nexus tablet in about 4 months. Of course, Nexus 9 was released 4 months "late" so if Google does that again you may have at most 8 months, so Nexus 9 has already reached its half-life.
Whether you care about this or not is your choice, but it's something to keep in mind. I personally never buy or recommend anyone to buy a product that's reached its half-life.

You can find a decent surface pro for $400 or so. A Nexus 9 will run $300.

I tend to end up rooting my devices within 12 months so cyanogen mod should keep me floating for a few years, Google updates will do fine for a while, but I was also recently looking at the nvidia shield while it is cheaper, it also has as card support, hdmi and the other game things, so what would be supporting argument for n9, I love the nexus line but nvidia just seems to offer a bit more, but I love the Denver processor in the n9 also the screen and Google support
Thanks

performance and battery life are pretty poor for such a beast of a device. i haven't tried M, so i can't say if it'll help. spend $200 on a lenovo tab 2 a10-70. they're not top of the line but seem to be good bang-for-the-buck devices. the ONLY reason why i haven't gotten one for myself is b/c they don't make the multiangle slim folio cases for it yet. i won't buy a device that doesn't have one made for it, lol.

I never said he couldn't use Windows - just that the experience of each device differs, which is true. Both devices have been operated by me, and I wouldn't suggest each to the same person, nor do I encourage iPad users to buy a Surface either.

Surface pro also has a 10" device. A Nexus is far from replacing a laptop, but a surface pro can be used as a tablet, computer, note taking device (student), and run Android apps (bluestacks, myandy, etc..). I own a Nexus 9 and only use it for entertainment. I own a surface pro 3 (12 inch), and I do all of my school work on it. I write and record my lecture notes, highlight keypoints on pdf and other type of files, type (surface keyboard) documents on Google drive, use split screen to watch YouTube videos while I finish a document, and save my videos/pictures on a microsd card. The surface pro is such an amazing and productive device for a student.

if you're referring to the one i won't buy b/c i can't find a case... it's the lenovo tab 2. i've got the nexus 9 with a slim folio case.
the lackluster performance and battery life are the nexus 9 remarks. 5.1.1 did address the ramping up of the gpu and cpu to full speed when touching the screen, but it's still ramping up pretty high compaired to my galaxy note 10.1 2014. you'd figure being a more powerful device wouldn't have to draw so much power when interacting with it. using a custom rom and tuning the cpu and gpu down does yield better battery life, but at the cost of performance - it starts stuttering. i haven't tried undervolting or even checking if that was an option with the rom i'm using. that way i can keep the performance without sacrificing battery life. as it is, i get 7-8hours of use depending on how much i touch it. reading a book or watching a video can get me almost 10hours since i don't touch it much while doing those tasks.
just to clarify, the performance isn't from the cpu or gpu, but with the memory management. it just doesn't seem to get it right... i get screen redraws when i change tabs while browsing, i have to use a memory killer in order to not have it lock up daily... it's issues i had when i used a device with only 512MB of ram.

So would you say get the shield tablet over nexus 9

The shield is powerful but has issues of its own. While it has a mSD slot, you have to jump through hoops to get it to barely work. Apps cannot write to it directly. Nvidia is not very good yet at getting the basic features working properly. P.S. I have the shield tab.

Why get the nexus 10 ?

I am a uni student and I need a nice tablet to make notes, record lectures, and read documents with. I am into games too but barely have time to play. I want something that will be useful two years from now. I am big on performance and graphics.
With no potential to attach a keyboard, is it really worth the money for a student ? How long will it take before this becomes out dated ?

You can attach a keyboard. Buy a bluetooth keyboard. It'll hook right up in less than a minute.
I can't guarantee the quality of this thing, but bluetooth keyboard cases exist.

Nice...I hope by DEC 26 I'll be able to get it in Toronto.

e Nexus 7 is a powerful enough device with 1gb RAM which only sounds insufficient due to the 2gb devices that have come out(nexus 10). You could also consider the Asus Transformer series as you can get a keyboard dock with a built in battery and a full sized USB port, also a micro SD card slot but you won't get the vanilla android experience and timely updates like you will on the Nexus. It depends on what you prefer. Hope that helped.

Most tablets don't have specific keyboard attachments made by the manufacturer; Asus is the exception, if you think you need a keyboard, check out the Transformer series of tablets. I owned an Asus Tf700 tablet w/ the keyboard dock and IMO found the keyboard too small for accurate/quick typing. Instead, I use a Wacom Bamboo stylus and digitally "handwrite" my notes using two apps; 7Notes & Evernote. 7Notes is a keyboard replacement for handwriting text and actively converts your writing to typed text; in combo w/ Evernote, I love it. At the end of the day I have clean, organized & typed notes saved in the cloud on my Evernote account.
Me? I have a laptop w/ normal sized keyboard for typing; I bought my tablet for just that..a tablet lol.
My reasons for getting the N10:
- Pure Google/Android experience & almost instant updates. (2 yrs use is absolutely achievable w/ a Nexus device)
- Great specs & design doesn't look anything like an iPad + the display is gorgeous.
- And of course school; this includes taking notes as I'm also a college student.
Also, Highlighting text is pretty straight forward & easy for copy/paste actions.
I said to 1gb referring to the nexus 7. And using Bluetooth as a keyboard would kill battery. I'm on my phone will get to my desktop soon and research. I love the bonus power from the Asus tho.

I have the exact same requirement too. I plan on reading docs, books, making notes and watch movies/tv shows occasionally. I plan on getting the nexus 10 seeing as it has the best screen res amongst all android tablets, thereby making reading books like harrisons medicine more convenient.
That being said, I will probably sell the N10 and order a Note 10.1 2 with a full HD display the moment it becomes available(at some point in the future). From what I've seen, the productivity on a note is unparallelled amongst android tabs.

Waiting game is hard, but be strong and wait till CES comes around. For a student, having a Wacom stylus is a must and N10 simply doesn't fit the bill. Like a previous poster said, lets hope they release higher-res followup to the Note.
May be just may be ASUS will wake up and add stylus to the Transformer line (TF1000 ?
The jury is out on Windows 8 RT - it is DOA ... darn shame, as MS Note is the best note taking app ever, period. Sammy has 2 Windows 8 tablet out (Ativs) out, but too many folx are complaining about quirky stylus, battery life doesn't even come close to android tablets or Ipad ... Surface Pro will suffer from the same short @ss battery life.
It is sad state of affairs in the tablet market, as far as students are concerned ... will probably take another year for the ultimate tablet to emerge.

Exactly..I plan on buying the N10 when I go to the US in Janary. I won't be taking it if there is an announcement of a new Note at CES(which is unlikely, considering its only been a couple of months since they brought out the Note).

Battery life is fantastic. And in regards to "not enough apps for tablets", there's really nothing Google can do about that. That's up to app developers, not Google.
Not to mention, that Android tablets never reeall had the issues other tablets had.. most scale perfectly, and you wouldn't know they aren't for tablets (this goes for things like many games, web browsers, office aps, etc) . Those that do have problems are normally quick to get updates... frankly, the the issue is really overrated ..
I'm a student and I have been using it to study, although not take notes. I would not recommend this for taking notes because of the lack of the palm guard. Makes it very difficult and awkward to take notes on. As other posters have said, get the Galaxy Note 10.1 if you would like to take notes seriously. However, the Note 10.1 I ultimately decided against because the screen resolution got terrible reviews and I am huge on that, also the vanilla Android experience was too much for me to say no to. I really enjoy my Nexus 10 so far, and can get over the fact that there is no palm guard. Its a great device for the price overall

I think I'm going to wait then.. since its only good for studying. No network connectivity is an issue too since most of the apps I use need the net. No stylus.. Sucks the N7 only has 1gb of Ram which means lag. No tab for me then.. at least for now. Screen reviews are amazing tho ...speed and screen size suggest longevity. Bluetooth keyboard is attractive but I'm not sold. No SD, and No Network. Hard to spend $400 plus on it.

Is definitely hard to beat for many aspects but this tablet just isn't right for you, I can respect that although you may ultimately be displeased with other tablets for reasons that the nexus 10 excels in. Nexus 7 to Nexus 10?

Considering selling my nexus 7 16gb to glyde.com since there willing to give me $147 and some change. Not a bad loss on it considering its now selling new for $200.
My current situation is I have a note 2 which I love and a nexus 7 at home to use. It is a noticeable jump, but still not that crazy of a jump. The new android version on the nexus 7 is a bit annoying, hate the newer style lock screen and some lag since updating.
What should I know about making the jump? Is there any others that came from a nexus 7? What's your feelings on the switch?

I ditched my Nexus 7 two weeks ago.
It is the same buggy 4.2.1 version of Android that the Nexus 7 has. Like the Nexus 7 though the ROM and kernel developers have tamed it.
The screen is like night and day, and it is a lot faster.
I do miss my Nexus 7 a lot though. Even now I still reach for it by reflex when leaving the house.. The portability and small form factor was awesome for out of the house.

N7 is a great device but I love my N10, no regrets! You gain HDMI out, rear camera, speed, screen resolution and lose some portability.
I did kind of like gaming on my N7 more than on my N10 (holding the N7 is a bit easier for me anyway), but I love the way games look on my N10 more than my N7
My mom got gifted the nexus 7 and I loved playing with it. I got the nexus 10 but it was a tough decision. The price and the form factor for the 7 is amazing.

I went from the seven to the ten, and I'm not gonna lie, although I do miss the seven, the ten definitely bests it in pretty much every area, except foot portability. I took my seven with me everywhere. The extra size on the ten is nice for watching movies, and I would hate to take a loss in performance, but I'm honestly thinking of returning my ten and saving $250 bucks by just getting another seven and waiting to see what comes out in the following months.
Buy if you've decided to spend the money I seriously doubt you will regret making the switch. Definitely an upgrade in every area except for portability.

I have both,
N7 is now used to read books (couch, stationary bike, sauna), play Pandora or tunein radio in my speakers, check emails.
N10 I use it to browse internet mainly, it is much much faster than the N7.
Nexus 4 is just a communication device(lot of sms, calls, whatsapp, viber, quick emails, stocks, weather)
I'm glad I'm able to use the 3 of them. They all have areas where they shine.
If i would need to choose between N7 and N10, I'll probably choose N10.
The N7's size is both a blessing and a curse. As much as I like the portability having a larger screen is worth a little less portability and ergonomics IMO.
I thought about going with an N7 but every time I used it I was left wanting more from the screen. I couldn't be happier with the N10 at this point.
Rear-facing camera is the biggest thing that basically ended my debate on whether to get a N7 with 3G, or N10. I rely on my N10's rear camera a good bit

just out of curiousity. did you guys go with the 16 or 32? I have a 16 now that I havent filled up, mostly because i dont leave all my games on it at the same time. With the N7 the 32 seemed to do better in performance when closer to being filled.

All depends on your tab usage. I don't store anything on my tab other than PDFs and pictures taken with the tab camera. So 16 GB and a $100 saved is money saved as I don't see an extra 16 GB worth the price difference. But if you have a lot of apps and games and what not of are just plain weird to use the tab as an mp3 repository then 32 should be a minimum.

Very interesting to see different opinions, having the ipad and 7 I find myself to always bring the 7 everywhere I go, the portability is hard to beat
Figured I'd ask here rather than start a new thread. I've already got an Acer A200 (which my girlfriend gave back to me after she got a HOX) and an N7. With the N7 and an N4, I feel a little redundant already, but adding the A200 in, it feels a little much. But! It doesn't bother me, and I reaaaaaaally want an N10..
my question is this: anyone who has an N10, N7, and N4 (or similarly sized phone), what do you use each for? Or do you find yourself using one more than the other? Looking more so for testimonials I suppose.

Apples to oranges honestly. Chrome books are typically very cheap netbooks with very limited software and hardware. Sort of a very cheap version of a macbook air without the form factor, slimness or software. The one time I used it I was amazed at how limited you are.
The chrome book pixel on the other hand is the single sexiest bit of industrial engineering I have ever seen. Unfortunately its still running that chrome OS. Honestly, I can see paying $250 for a chrome book even with how limited it is because its so affordable. The pixel on the other hand I can't see being worth it at all. As beautifully crafted as it is, the OS is just too limited to be worth the $1200. If it was running something like Mac OS or Windows 8 (touch input) I could see myself wanting one.
Hell I have both. Its not a computer replacement but it depends what your looking to get out of it. If your primary concern is work I'd say chrome book if you are using it for play then N10 hands down. It is apples to oranges but they're both great devices

Thanks for the very informative response.
I've had my 10 for a couple of months now & have yet to find a decent keyboard so I can use it as a semi-replacement for my laptop. I just want to use it to access files on my network occasionally to edit, etc, but not lose the tablet experience, if you will.
I purchased the Nexus at Staples & I have the option of returning it, no questions asked, if I chose to do so.
Bottom line, based on what you've described, it sounds like the CB is much more limited than the Nexus in terms of usability, correct?

Hell I have both. Its not a computer replacement but it depends what your looking to get out of it. If your primary concern is work I'd say chrome book if you are using it for play then N10 hands down. It is apples to oranges but they're both great devices

Please see my response to "NickTheMajin". I'm not looking for a total laptop replacement; just a nice tablet/laptop hybrid but not for all of the things one might get in a fully loaded laptop.
That said, I do love the Nexus. I think the issue of a very powerful keyboard is what I need to retain it.

For your use I would really recommend two things. Either the Microsoft Surface or waiting and seeing if a new Transformer tablet comes out. At this point I would not recommend the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity, its really not that good of a tablet and has a ton of performance issues. But Asus will likely release another tablet in its transformer line this year.
Based on what you said the best for you is a windows 8 tablet hybrid. I would not get surface I tried both RT and Pro and its OK but keyboard sucks big time. I would suggest you get the lenovo thinkpad helix. It is similar to Asus transformer but much more powerful and windows 8 coming out in April.

Not sure if it was mentioned yet or not, but Chromebooks (afaik) are "open", as in, you can install any compatible OS. ARM-based Chromebooks are a bit more limited on other OS options, in comparison to x86 Chromebooks.
Issue is the hard drive space is crap on chrome book most have 16gb not enough IMO.

I was not aware of this. Could you theoretically put Windows 8 on the Chromebook Pixel? Because that would actually make me consider getting one to supplement my desktop. $1200 is steep but the build quality of the thing is more than worth it if I can put software in it that is useful.
I love my nexus 10 and I was going to purchase a Samsung chromebook but the only thing that stopped me was not being able too run adb and fastboot and hook it up to my phone ....so I replaced the hard drive in my old HP lap top and installed Ubuntu 13.04 on it ....unless something has changed when I was looking at the chrome book about a month ago there wasn't a way to install the platform tools without having to do a million things I wanted something simple but oh well :good:

N10 and the Samsung Series 3 ARM Chromebook are nearly the same in speed.
Look here for more info: https://plus.google.com/communities/105678482604512626671
You can also install Ubuntu on this machine and run it simultaneously with ChromeOS.

You should be able to. I have a beta version Chromebook (cr-48) and I was able to install Windows 8 on that. Google even had a tutorial on their development site, so I'm sure you can do that with the newer Chromebooks.
Thanks to all for the great advice! At this point, I think that I'll hold onto my 10 & get a really robust keyboard. Speaking of, I've seen several. Top 3? May at least drop by a store to see a CB for the heck of it.

Can Chromebooks ADB connect to phones? That is my only sticking point on pulling the trigger on a Chromebook.

Since you're going to keep the Nexus 10, I recommend this keyboard:
http://www.amazon.com/ZAGG-FOLZKFLE...&sr=8-1&keywords=zagg+flex+Bluetooth+keyboard
The stand it comes with is terrible and mine was torn out of the box. I bought it for the keyboard though and could care less about the stand since I'm using a case with a build in stand. To keep things nice and portable without going with a full size keyboard is say this is one of the best options, especially for the price. Other options were up to twice the cost.

No idea on ChromeOS (although with Linux at the base, I imagine it should be possible to some extent), but if you load another OS onto the Chromebook, then yes.
I have a Samsung Series 3 Chromebook and I just ordered a Nexus 10. I know I can't speak from experience, as I don't have the 10 yet, but I plan to use each in conjunction with another - the 10 for light browsing on the couch, reading (I.e. Flip board, pocket, ebooks), playing games (I have ps3 controllers so it should work out well) and since I'm also a student, using it as a notebook with a stylus, going through PowerPoints and reading textbooks.
The Chrome book, as mentioned by someone earlier is moreso a work machine. To be honest, its fairly slow in my opinion, but that's essentially a given with the current price point. However, both the track pad and keyboard work extremely well, and are comparable to that of a Macbook Pro.
Honestly I'm questioning how I will use the Chrome book, now that I have a Nexus 10, a case with a stand and a great Bluetooth keyboard (apple keyboard), but I still think it would be nice in terms of actual browsing or doing work
Also, I don't feel limited at all with the Chromebook. All my document needs are taken care of by Google Drive (with 100gb of extra storage when you buy a chrome book), I have both Google tasks , Google calendar, MightyText (SMS from from computer) and Chime (notifications extension), and if theres anything I desperately need to do, I have Chrome Remote Desktop. I don't know if ADB is possible on the Chrome book , as I don't use it. But, you can always sideload Ubuntu. Finally, the chrome book has amazing battery life and has Netflix support so there's not much more I could ask for $250
Just my 2 cents

Not sure what people mean by "wish they would make this for the nexus" but it's just a good, solid keyboard overall. Granted, I don't have a lot of experience with a lot of other keyboards, but I'm not searching for another since I got this one. My case came with a cheap keyboard (I have the Poetic case/keyboard combo) and it needed replacing, that's when I looked at reviews and decided on the Zagg.

Nexus 10 over the Nexus 7?

Hello,
Simply as the title says, is the Nexus 10 worth it over the Nexus 7 besides the extra screen size (price not an issue)?
Thanks,
Crazysah
Yes
And the Nexus 7 will be getting a whole new model in 3 months. It will have a Snapdraon 600 processor, probably get an upgrade to 2GB of RAM like everything new does now days, and hopefully will also get a resolution bump. Once it gets this new model upgrade the choice between these two tablets might become harder.
My main reasons for liking the Nexus 10 more are:
- Rear-facing camera + flash
- Vibration
- Screen Resolution
- Specs
Imo, totally worth it The only downside that bothers me is portability, but meh.
The only thing that may concern me is how fast it runs while streaming and playing games and battery life on the Nexus 10.
Otherwise it looks to be the tablet for me definitely.
A real-world non-technical comparison:
My wife and daughter each have a Nexus 7, and they're both very envious of my Nexus 10 that I've had since last week.
They both like the bigger screen, and my wife commented that she likes the colours on my Nexus 10 better. Her Nexus 7 looks a bit washed-out when side-by-side with my Nexus 10. She also thinks it feels faster, but that's just her subjective view obviously.
As a Nexus 10 and 7 owner.. get the 10..
In my family we have two Nexus 10's and a Nexus 7. I was the one using the Nexus 7, with my wife having a Nexus 10 for months. I became envious of her Nexus 10 and got my own several days ago. My daughter uses the Nexus 7 and is in love with it. It's the perfect size for her. If i had to choose between them (and I just did), I'd get a Nexus 10 because of the screen. The Nexus 7's screen isn't bad necessarily but the 10's screen is really good. I love reading PDFs on it now, couldn't say that with the 7.
Scott
I personally think that they are too different to simply ponder which one should i get. To me they both have very different uses due to their form factor.
My N10 is absolutely fantastic, one of the best uses of my money in a long long time, but that said, due to it's size, it is either for home use or for when i'm on a coach or sat in the car for an hour waiting to pick someone up. The N7 would not satisfy me in these situations, but with a N7 or similar small tablet, it could feasibly slip in a pocket, be taken to the shop with me (i use my N10 a lot as a cookbook) or just generally out and about without having to consider lugging an 11" device around, i'm not the type to have a backpack or such, it's pockets or nothing.
as such, i love my N10, but am also considering selling an old computer that's not doing anything and using some of the money to buy a smaller device to complement my N10, just gotta decide which smaller device to consider. I do rather like the notion of a good stylus.
So yes, for me it's a question on usage, not which is better based on technical spec.
I think the 10 might just suit me better. Two questions:
1. How is the battery life?
2. How is streaming videos from a web browser?

Battery life seems to vary from user to user, 8-9 hours being normal it seems. Some seem to only get 4-5, not sure what they do with their tablet, while some using different roms are getting 10+ without an issue. I've never tested mine although i watched an HD copy of the avengers on a coach, using headphones, and wifi off, and i was at 76% battery life about 2 and a half hours later, so good enough for me I played a game the other day for the first time, Arcane Legends, and while i didn't play for very long, it seemed that my battery was dropping at an alarming rate, as in mere hours of play time before running out of juice.
As to streaming, hit and miss. As you know, there is no longer any proper flash support. I've found most sites do not work for me, however this might be fixable through a different browser but i have not tried as the youtube app is all i need, anything streamed will be done on my computer.
No Android device will officially support flash anymore, so both the Nexus 7 and 10 fall into the same category here as "hit and miss" with finding a stable web browser than has flash integrated into it.
Nexus 10 for me but nexus 7 is definetly easier to carry around. But that is not even a factor for me.
It's basically if you want to carry it with you all the time vs if you want to use it in more stationary way. Or have very weak hands that can't hold it for long.
Can someone check if firstrowsports.eu works? That's what I most care about. Check if you can view any matches.
Couldn't seem to watch anything using chrome browser just now.
Ah damn. Maybe I can use OnLive Desktop like I did for the iPad.
You need to root and flash AOKP pub... it comes with the stock browser... Then go to Google and look up adobe flash hack and boom... everything streams

You don't need root to flash a custom ROM, nor do you need that particular ROM either.
You need at the very least, a custom recovery. TWRP and CWM are the only options in this regard. Next, you can either:
- Install AOSP's browser on stock ROM
- Install a custom ROM that has AOSP's browser
And there's plenty of custom ROM's that include AOSP's browser. Next, you'll need to grab the legitimate flash player from Adobe's archive site for ICS, install it, and bam, done. No idea what that flash hack is you mention...
That's just the Keywords I remember putting into Google and the flash thing was like the third page
Quick question before I go out and buy this tomorrow...
Can the Nexus 10 store and play video files? .avi? .mkv? Or music files? .mp3? .flac?

The Nexus 10 is a little limited. It handles MP4, and M4V fine but a no go on MKV. It'll play but jerky and stutters. It also has played some WMAs without issue. As for audio I am not sure, of course mp3 is fine and I think flac works as well

Nexus 10 performance

I posted this in the Gpad 8.3 thread but not everyone there will have a nexus 10 so i figured id better hands on experience here.
I'm debating a gpad 8.3 or a nexus 10.
Long as the screen size is greater then 8 inches (hence the two options im ok).
I was wondering if anyone had/has both and could tell me about performance.
Specifically the snapdragon 600 vs the exynos of the nexus 10. Ive heard the Nexus 10 having bad stuttering as the cpu/gpu cant handle the screen rez.
I can get a used good nexus 10 on eBay for the same price as the gpad and trying to decide which.
I only do light / moderate gaming. My primary purpose will be video watching (thinking front speakers will be great for it), comic and ebook reading, surfing web, etc..
I've used both for several hours, but I own the Nexus 10. The Nexus 10 seems quite a bit faster doing normal activities, but the LG was 4.2.2 LG compared to my 4.4.2 with pure Android.
That being said, the LG is about one half the weight and thinner with not quite high end camera of the Nexus 10 although I never take pics with my tablet except to look at how good or bad they are. Both are stomped camera wise by my Nokia 920.
I like them both and might buy a LG 8.3, but really they are quite a bit different.

I watch HD videos I copied to internal storage on my N10 and I never seen any stuttering. I watch Hulu with some episodes in HD and no stuttering. I've had no performance issues and its crashed once in the 4 weeks I've had it. I'm on stock 4.4.2 with Franco kernel.

Very similar to my needs, the primary advantage the N10 has it is just plain easier on the eyes on a 10". I also do things like mine on the BBC TV streaming whilst I work on a laptop and the forward speakers are wonderful. For me the biggest weakness of N10 is obvious - its lack of pocketability, something like my N7 does that better, I imagine gpad would be somewhere in the middle. If I were buying new now (I had the N7 2012 first then the N10) I'd go with a used N10 and a new N7 and grab whichever for the day, which is primarily N10 when stationary and N7 when moving, you can use stickmount with both stuff it with videos. I bluetooth tether to my android phone and bluetooth fast enough for non-HD type streaming.
I know you said they are the same cost roughly (new gpad vs used N10) but probably if you bought and sold that gpad you'd be more out of pocket than if you bought and sold the N10 as new-to-used is quite a drop vs used-to-used tends to be less so.... on a per-day of ownership basis you're probably going to find it cheaper with a used N10. Good luck whichever you go for there's always some risk with any purchase whether new or used.
Well I think the lag thing has been fixed for a long time but the stigma has kind of stuck with the device

I did flash stock of 4.2.2. 4.3, 4.4 4.4.1 4.4.2 doing no "backup and restore" so its pure vanilla each time and did the most performance heavy stuff I frequently use. 4.4.2 is the fastest and most stable (others may find different conclusions). Don't do OTA and don't do any Google backup/restore they cause issues. The fact that OTA leaves legacy performance and stability issues is the most worrying because most people do stock and most people do OTA so they're holding in their hands something slower than if they did an ADB flash stock and writing opinions which aren't fair.
My N10 is faster than my N7 2012, my N4 is faster than both but that's because N4 has less than quarter the number of pixels than N10.

I think you're asking the wrong question there. I'd focus on which size is best for you. The extra 2+ inches makes them very different devices.
If you sit with the tablet on your lap and type with one hand, the Nexus 10 is pretty good. But if you prefer to lie down and hold it like a book and type with your thumbs, an 8" tablet is a much better choice. I returned my Nexus 10 and moved to 8" tablets for this reason. Same for watching movies lying down. Your arms get tired eventually.
However I do hate non-front-facing speakers. That does make the 10 stand out for movie watching. And if you're going to set it on a table or your lap, the bigger screen is better.
