My girlfriends T mobile LG G2 D801 was dropped and the screen cracked and the digitizer only recognizes the left of the screen so she can not input her lock code. Being pretty android savvy I was hoping I could figure out a way to get CWM installed to be able to pull her pictures off the SD card for her. Unfortunately I can not connect to the phone through ADB since I can only assume she never turned USB debugging on because why would she? The phone is stock rom unrooted. I booted into the stock recovery and only have the option to wipe the phone which I would assume will wipe her sd card also. I booted into download mode and upgraded the recovery with the LG support tool for the hell of it. So obviously I'm able to install a new recovery that route but I cant find anyway to install CWM without a working screen or USB debugging already enabled. Does anyone have any suggestions? Bricking the phone trying isnt really a concern since it needs to be sent back to the insurance company anyway. Any help is appreciated.
Hey there. I recommend getting a cheap USB-OTG cable. You can plug a USB keyboard or USB mouse into the OTG cable and Android will automatically detect it. You can also use a USB hub to plug both a keyboard and mouse in at the same time if you so desire. Then you should be able to navigate the device and enable USB debugging.
I just recently used this method to recover stuff from my OPO that had a shattered screen and the digitizer was reading dozens of faux touches all over the screen from it. When I was using the mouse, it seemed to override the digitizer and the phone only paid attention to the mouse so it was a perfect solution. Although, instead of using ADB, I used Xender to transfer all my files directly to my backup phone.
OTG cables and adapters can be bought on eBay from China for less than a dollar and if you don't want to wait a few weeks, you can get them from domestic sellers on eBay or Amazon for just a few bucks.

By the way, if you don't mind me asking, if the pictures are on the SD card, why not just pull it out and use an SD card reader to copy them to a computer? Or did you mean to say the internal storage?

Since your USB port will be taken up, you'll have to figure out another method of file transfer. Fortunately there's apps like Xender, which can transfer files over ad-hoc WiFi to another phone very fast. It can also transfer to a PC over the Internet by scanning a QR code on their website to establish the connection.

Unlike how android phones should be made, the LG G2 only has internal SD not ExtSD.

Haha, ok, I wasn't sure if it did. I figured you meant internal, but when I googled "LG G2 SD card" a video of how to remove the SD card came up, but now I realize that was for the G2 Mini.
Anyway, take another look at my post if you want. I edited it to just say that you can enable ADB with the OTG cable and a mouse. That's probably the simpler solution you're looking for rather than using another app to transfer files. Hope it works for ya.
Thanks for that, im going to ask her how long she has before it needs to be sent back and how bad she cares about the pics. Sucks that theres no way to flash a recovery and mount the storage to a pc.

Hi All,
Was holding phone to head on my shoulder and it slipped off. Fell to hard surface. Back & battery door flew off. Reassembled and while I can hear it and it seems to be functioning as it should, the screen is black and doesn't respond to touch (called phone, screen won't lite up, pressed where "Answer" would be and it will not answer).
So, conceded to the fact the phone needs to be replaced.
BUT
Is there any way I can retrieve my data off the phone to put on the replacement? I've got Titanium Backup installed on the phone, but without a working screen, kinda useless.
Is there some way to operate Titanium Backup (or some other product) from my PC and retrieve/backup my data to be able to restore to a replacement phone?
I can hook up the data cable to the PC and browse the phone if that helps/matters.
TIA for any help!
If you saved your Titanium Backups to the SD card and if you have a recent complete (full) backup, you should be okay. Try reading the SD card by using the micro USB cable connected to the Atrix and a PC. If that doesn't work, use a micro SD to standard USB adapter and plug it into a PC. Your TIBu files should be there.
Good luck
My last backup was about a week ago. I've got a few things that are newer than that which I would like to be able to salvage if at all possible.
ADB
Just mount it with adb and pull everything off with android commander or something.
You can try something more..stupid..
If you have multimedia dock, or a usb hub with voltage, connect it, use webtop with a mouse
Said already stupid
But if you have these and it works, you can make a newest backup with tibu

Try screencast. This will allow you to operate phone without the screen working all other methods mentioned won't work because you have to select something for them to work via the phone. I'll get the link

Here is the link. it works. Make sure too launch the program, using adb commands don't work for me.

I don't think your solution to be stupid at all!
Actually it should work great if the phone still works minus the screen and digitizer.
To the OP, if you don't have a dock or Lapdock, I'm sure you can walk in an AT&T store and ask them to let you hook up your Atrix and external drive or thumb drive to one of their lapdocks and transfer your info. I'm sure they will let you.
I've done it once before I got my Lapdock and wanted to check my hacked Atrix!
Oh and forgot to mention that maybe you can find a screen replacement over at CNN.CN and do the replacement yourself. That is if Motorola does not honor your warranty.
Good luck!
So ive had my galaxy s 2 for a few months now, downloaded hundreds of songs, taken near a thousand photos, and yesterday the digitizer/lcd was shattered after being sat on. I can't replace this phone, and my parents who own the contract didn't purchase insurance for it. I am nearly broke, and the repair costs for this part is over 200$, and my parents refuse to pay for this. All I need to do is copy all of the files from my phone to my computer, but i cannot enable mass storage to access the pictures/music on the internal storage because the screen is out. Does anyone have an idea as to how I could fix this, or move the files off of the phone? A thousand thanks to whoever could help me in this/:

Is Android Debugging on? Then you probably could get ADB to work.
If not, then...
Thats the thing. the screens black on my phone cause its broken, so i cant check if its on or not. idk how to use mass storage w/o this):
Droid VNC server may be an option, if you can somehow get it to work.
You have to download the app on the market to vnc with the computer, it would work if I wouldve already downloaded it.. I cant do anything on my phone at all. Thanks for the attempt though

sure you can, plug it in to your computer and just run adb devices, if it shows up, then debugging is on, if it is off it will tell you no device found
so to pull all the files off your sdcard assuming debugging is on..
1. in adb mount the sdcard (I forget the command off the top of my head, but google is your friend)
2. adb pull /sdcard some_folder_name_in_your_sdk_directory

Assuming I understand this correctly, you can still download apps to your phone by logging in to the market from your computer. This may still be an option.

You could always look around eBay craigslist or anywhere else you can think of and you might get lucky in finding a cheap gs2 that doesn't work but the screen is still intact or maybe if you know anyone that maybe willing to let you borrow their screen from their phone for yours if you know how to. I just haven't pulled apart any phones since I came
To the US in 2002 so I'm not sure if its still that simple to do.
I haven't tried it yet so some of the others may be able to chime in but what about the possibility of using the HDMI adapter. I have looked at purchasing one and they are not very expencive depending on the source. I just do not know if it will automatically output the video when connected or it needs to be enabled.

it automatically works. nothing needs to be enabled
1) If you had USB debugging enabled, you can use ADB. If you're not sure - try it.
2) If you had a custom kernel with CWM installed, you can use ADB from within recovery. Recovery does not normally mount the sdcard but you can do it manually via ADB. I can provide info on this IF you can get ADB connecting first
3) HDMI is another possibility - although controlling the device will be problematic if the touchscreen is also failed. (It's possible that touchscreen is semiworking and main AMOLED is busted.)
For getting ADB installed and running, try Droid Explorer.
Been there done that.
Unfortunately, it'll cost some money to do a diy fix with this phone.
Last summer I dropped my htc aria onto gravel and the glass shattered. I googled around and found an oem digitizer for 30 bucks on ebay, and some great how-to-tear-apart your phone videos on youtube. 5 hours and multiple clumps of hair ripped out later, I got the thing fixed. Granted the light from the soft keys now bleeds onto the screen (thankfully CM7 let me disable them) and the trackpad became recessed in too far to use. But it still got me through until I got my SGS2.
Only thing is, my lcd still worked, it was just the glass digitizer that broke.

I have CWM flashed, but I cant tell if im in recovery after holding down the buttons. And im not sure how to view the pictures after i take them in the mode..
You should be able to plug it in to your computer and MTP should connected automatically allowing you to copy your files
Hi
Sorry if there has already been a post like this, my sgs3 seems to work well with usb otg with mem sticks and different input devices, but when i try to connect any External Hard Drive over 2tb, my phone freezes and crashes, any reasons why???
There might be an problem with the HDD not getting enough power or it might be a problem with the file system. But to be honest, the worst case should be the phone does not recognizing the HDD or telling you that it's corrupted. A crash is definitely out of the ordinary.
It is Externally powered so i doubt it it the power, but my usb powerd 100gig hdd works fine, but thanks for reply
how did you get a 100gig hard drive to work. i cant get my hdd to work with it. only the light comes on but the phone doesnt find anything
Use a Y-usb connector, 2 usb's in one end and a micro-usb on the other. Plug one usb in to usb charger that came with the phone, plug the other usb into tho otg addaptor, and finally the micro-usb into the hdd, and bang it should work.

i have the same problem. i have two different 1Tb drives (one western digital one Hitachi) both formatted as Fat32 and both make the phone crash and need a full reboot. maybe i need to try reformatting the drives.
i emailed samsung asking them exactly what formats/size/specs are required of a hard drive to be supported by an s3 via otg. obviously their reply was not very useful. they told me it doesnt work... which i already knew and had already told them in my email. I replied asking for more specifics but so far I have been ignored. I even offered to buy a samsung hard drive if they could tell me it would work.

I had the same issue with my WD 500gig 2.5 HDD. After some research you have to either 1) the HDD in Fat32 or exFAT or 2) when you are rooted use one of the apps that mount NTFS partitions (e.g. I am using Paragon NTFS&HFS+). At least that brought my HDD to live, before just got the empty flashdrive found, filesystem unknown message, but I also read in different other threats that people have issues with other HDDs.
Ok so I just upgraded yesterday from the HTC inspire and I must say I'm liking the S3. Except for one thing, no usb mass storage mode? Duuuwwwhhhaaaatttt??? This is awful...just awful.. I work night shifts and play minecraft a lot at work
D) and alwayed used my inspire for transfering the save data on my work computer to my personal desktop at home... I NEED this FIXED.!! I have the 16GB sd card I pulled out of my inspire shoved in the S3's ext-sd slot and would love to know how to use it as a usb mass storage like I did on my inspire.. I have tried the easy ums app and it doesn't work :/ so here I am, humbly asking for help from you geniuses...

Not sure if this is what you're asking but here goes...
I just started using the S3 as well, upgraded from an S2 T989 (T-mobile)
On the S2, when I connect to the USB port, I can "turn on" usb mass storage mode to connect to the PC and I'm not seeing that option here on the S3.
However, when I connect the phone to my PC, I get the following options:
- Media device (MTP): automatically checked
- Camera (PTP)
And when I check on "camera (PTP)", my PC would recognize the phone as SGH-T999. And when I click on it, I would have two options:
- Card (External SD)
- Phone (Internal SD)
From here, I can just copy and paste whatever from PC to SD card and vice versa.

Well let me start with this then..on my inspire, I could plug it up to any computer and it would show up as a disk drive and I could transfer baby file back and forth at my will.
Now that I have my S3, I've realised that they've done any with usb mass storage and adopted mtp. Which doesn't work for me. I get a message 'cannot copy "file name" the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected.'
I can also connect through ptp and it will transfer most files, but not all. It will get to a certain point it gives me the good ole 'cannot copy "file name" the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected.' message.
So overall, my question is simply this, is there a way to enable usb mass storage for the external sd card on my sgs3? Either by fixing easy ums to work for a 1747 or by installing another app that I don't know about.
Btw, my s3 is rooted, running stock Rom and stock kernel, stock everything. I've installed busybox as well.

Well add me to the list of: MTP sucks! This is pretty awful, I mean if there is a work-around fine, but we shouldn't HAVE TO work around just to get Mass Storage support.
As of now we are stuck with MPT.
Works ok though I guess, I can move files back and forth. You can also try using a wifi explorer if your on the same network.

Alrighty!! I've done some snooping around and found this!!!:
Here's a thread for the AT&T S3 on Mass Storage, requires some tinkering though.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768752&highlight=mass+storage
So basically if you follow all the instructions, your 1747 will be able to mount its external sd card as a usb mass storage. Tried it myself!!! Amazing!!! Haha!!! Life is good once again...
In addition to the above steps, I also had to do something else. I'm running windows 7, but I don't see why it would be any different for any other windows, and after I installed gscript I had to go to device manager in windows, find your phone (should be under portable devices) and then right clicked and updated driver software. After that finished, the pc had to reboot. After reboot, I ran the scripts in gscript... Aaannnndddd... BAM.! MAGIC.!
I hope this helps those who are frustrated with their 1747 as well... this is a temp fix until a better one comes out... buuuuttt... cheers

I'm assuming SMS & MMS work as well, albeit untested.

Also, i just ran into this problem... the fix i mentioned above worked on my work computer but now that im home and i tried it..it didnt work.. :/
BUT!! i figured out the problem. The difference between my work and home computer? Kies... idk if it was that progam itself or just the drivers that came along with it but regardless i uninstalled kies and all the drivers associated with it. After that i plugged in my phone, ran the "mount" script and voila. MAGIC ONCE AGAIN!
Just thought i would inform the masses on what ive done so far to fix this problem
There is another option....
Get yourself a little adapter:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0027YYMU6/
Then you can plug any USB drive directly into that.. then the adapter into the phone.
Your phone will see it as a normal USB Drive... you can then use any filemanager to transfer files from the phones SD to that USB drive... Unplug the USB, pop it into a computer and you're all set.
I'll admit it's a bit kludgy, but until storage mode becomes available, you can use this on OS's that won't work properly with the existing MTP.
NOTE: Might want to buy a FEW adapters... i bought 1, worked great.. friend bought 2 more.. neither worked.. same brand etc... I have 2 more on the way just in case..but for .79 plus free shipping no reason not to buy half a dozen hehe

The WHY actually is documented around here somewhere... the short version is, with the way the OS is written, mounting the card as USB storage makes it unavailable to the system. Since most of the newer Androids OS use the SD card more heavily (such as A2SD type stuff) it would render applications 'broken' whenever the USB was plugged in.
That's the official story.. I'm not sure I buy it myself as I've seen apps that let you use the SD card on my original EVO AND have USB mode enabled just fine.. granted transfer rates sucked, and occassionally a file would get corrupted, but it worked 99% of the time. I don't know what 'tricks' those apps used to get it to work, but I don't see why Google couldn't use those same tricks directly in the OS.
Another option btw.. is Wifi Explorer Pro. If you're PC is on the same WiFi network, you can run the app then go to a webpage on your PC to upload/download files as needed. It's not as fast as a cable.. but it does work pretty well and is simple to use.
I have read several ways to factory reset the Z-Ultra with the buttons, since my screen cracked and no longer responds to touch.
There an official method? There are like 5 different ones when I Google search and they all fail.
I look in the forums and only found the power + volume up method. Doesn't work.

Wow thats really awesome! Hoping not to have to spend money since I am just trying to factory reset to sell phone for parts on ebay.
I had a suspicion the Z-Ultra was tablet format OS. Since I had options to download "tablet" versions of apps, like amazon and so on.
Thanks for that video though!!! Super cool! I am gonna see if they works with other phones!

I think Google may have a remote wipe but that probably needs to be enabled beforehand.
Edit.. Some phones support otg but don't supply pin out power to micro USB so a y-cable is required ( similar to how mhl adapter needs external power source).

I just checked in Google device manager and it was enabled by default on mine.
Ok I will try it.
Will have to put the sim card back in till it completes if it lets me. I hope it leaves the sim card alone since I think it deletes all data on phone and SD card.

I can see the screen. It shows just fine. I just can't control the phone. The touch on screen stopped working. Can't get passed the lock screen. can't do anything.
The keyboard thing would work. but rather try the google device "erase" phone option. trying to avoid buying things to clear the phone to sell it for parts.
Wonder if a usb coupler would work... use the keyboard and the stock usb cable. Hmmmm.....
Sure you can do a factory reset using adb commands google it.

I am pretty sure you need an "otg" cable with pin 4 jumpered to pin 5.

You should be able to skip the powered part from what I gathered watching YouTube I posted earlier.

I can't access the phone at all. It requires me to be in the OS to "allow" the PC to see the phone. I can see the in the notification area of the phone in the lock screen that the phone is waiting to give permission. But no screen function, no getting past lock screen.
Unless I am mistaken that there is no need to grant the PC permission to see the phone.

Your right.
I ordered the OTG cable from amazon. it is just under $4 and I have prime so I will get it saturday (2 days). I will do the Google erase and see if that works.
Will report both once done. I will test the cable even if the Google method works and let you guys know.
W..wh...why don't you just flash a stock FTF in Flashtool? Kick it into Flashmode (VOL DOWN + Connect it through USB) and hit the road, Jimmy. No need to touch the screen, and Flashtool will wipe everything.
Hey @Wolf-5 ^^^^^ look up there, hopefully you have notifications on.
I Really want to try keyboard approach first. Will allow me to get pics from phone that are in internal memory.
Then curious to try the Google erase phone. Never know when phone gets lost or stole. Good to see how it works.

Alright, but you're doing it the hard way. To get to your stuff, use a OTG adapter and a mouse. I've used it several times just for fun and it works perfect. No need to connect a whole keyboard.
