Lightest, slimmest, fastest and most cut down ROM? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone advise what is the current lightest, and fastest ROM?
Coming from linux, it's pretty easy to pick a light weight distro, there are a tonne of very small but very fast options, with android it's much harder to tell what's light weight / fast, and what isn't.
I don't want to retire my S3, but it's getting a fair bit of lag on CM 11.2 (March release) 4.4.4.

Bump for interest

So no opinions?

i'm using axuan's (4.4.4 - AXUAN i9300sksukni3 - s5 - note4style - V2 TW ROM) debloated rom further improved by zuziemanis (kopet huan 416mb - best or kopet note4 542mb - themed), so far i find it the lightest. i can run CoC, spirit fm/music, torrenting without one of them being killed by lmk.
2 issues:
1. gps not working in power saving mode.
2. only spirit fm radio works
other tw roms:
1. back-to-noot 4.4.4 ported 694mb - no theme, plain, vanilla-like
2. [4.4.2] QSBased SmartDroid Simple KK 426mb - heavily debloated (have a bloatwares pack available), stable, ram management still can't beat 4.4.4
for aosp, cm, etc i'm not happy with the keyboard predictions & auto spacing (google, swype, emoji, etc), i can't recommend any.

[Q] Resurrection Remix ics v1.0 PRO or v1.1??

Which one better?
As long as you dont want any of these changes/updates, 1.0 is better.
LP7 kernel
LPE modem
contact widgets fixed
call recorder added
CM9 AOSP apps and T9 dialler
font issues %98 fixed
new remix ics bootanimation (thanks to vreestyle)
new lidroid statusbar and settings
battery performance improvement
system performance improvement
APEX launcher updated
fast wifi browsing and gps
digital ics clock widget added
phone dialler performance improvement
deep sleep works perfect
best ics experience
device twice fast and twice fluid. (this rom ll make u addict )
I suppose it is a valid question, as there have been many users having trouble going to the newer ROM... but I think it's because many didn't install properly or skipped procedures and didn't keep up with any bug fixes. That's why I posted a more detailed installation guide HERE.
As far as performance goes, I was happy with 1.0 and believe my battery was slightly better - but it could be because I'm trying out the Siyah 3 kernel now on v1.1.

[Q] Which rom do you use and why?

Hi, guys.I'm here with a question.Which rom(s) do you use?And why? What makes you keep using gb, ics or jb?What do they have special? For instance, I'm sick of lagging ics roms and i installed cm10 and i returned to ics.And what i realized is especially Sony's stock camera app and other portable apps makes me use stock-based ics.(You would know how ugly the camera app of cm stuff is if you tried cm9/10.)'Nuff said. What are your reasons?
I was MIUI ICS for long and changed to pacman 4.1 and CM10 (4.1) all these ROM are not daily drivers. So now just wondering which is best config and Android version gives optimal performance on aging Neo Hardware.
I have Xperia Neo V with locked boot-loader and stock kernel .587. After trying several ROM I have settled on 'Ice Cream Pureness', with a few of my own changes, like Cyber-shot camera 7.1.2, Walkman, stock calendar, etc. This is very smooth ROM, with no bloat ware, and lots of free Internal memory.
MIUI
MIUIv2
based on CyanogenMod 7
I am Using MIUIv2 MultilangV4.6.2 because:
Lot's of Free Ram -> Up to 230 MB
Lightning Fast
Nice Battery Performance
No Errors like FC & etc (Only FC in Sync Settings)
Bright User Interace Easy to use good-feeling
Lot of other reason
I suggest everyone ti try it once;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599516
In my opinion MIUI v2(GB) is houndered times better than MIUIV4(ICS)
I use Codename X by eman
Why?
-Stable
-Fast
-Options
-Free Ram
-Nice design (but keyboard sux)
-And CyanogenMod is comercial for me
For now i using MIUI Australia v 2.11.30
After try other rom,for me this one is the great rom for my device.
Coz not so many custom rom for Neo L :crying:
Hi,
I used Sony ICS on my Neo V and I was all the time thinking to downgrade to GB. Now I have installed CM10 and I am quite happy. It is true that it is not stable and there are some features missing, but I have quite a good performance. I miss mostly the camera features, but there are some apps on the market that are really helpful (Vignette or Pano/360 for panorama).
Mine lol
im using my first rom BRABUS NXT for Neo V based on GB
1) lots of free ram [265mb at first reboot]
2)smooth interface based on Xperia Z
3) great battery when overclockked on stock 1024 gHz
4)nice performance
5) most beautiful launcher/systemUI/framework
try it if you like it
ROM Cooked On My Own. (Basically Stock Based, ICS)
Reasons:
-Able to choose selective apps & mods
-Able to theme the way I want it
-Stock base because it is bugfree.
-ICS because there are more mods & apps available which are not compatible with Gingerbread.
-Finally, don't have to wait for the updates!
Cheers

For now I'm using Gin2JellyBean ROM (based GB 2.3.7) by vokal1992. All I want just stability, no lags, music, and camera. And I think I got thats all in this ROM :victory:
Using Legacy Xperia 10.1 (2013/09/08 release)
1/ Its stable, havn't had any FC or restarts.
2/ The ROM is nice and smooth / no lag issues.
3/ Its Jelly Bean - maybe its a personal preference but I tend to like JB better than ICS.
4/ Quite a good amout of free storage and no issues with RAM either.
1 con is that my battery tends to last me about 12h I feel that the battery drains rather fast even with the screen off. However so far the above pros does negate this one for me.
I have been using the ZellyCream 3.0.1 with Stock ICS Kernel
Pros:
1. Nice look and feel
2. Install Apps directly to SD card - built in feature
3. Kill apps via back button, 30 Step volume, Skip tracks via volume key and many such small but useful features for day to day use
4. Very much stable for daily use
5. Good battery life
Cons:
1. Initially used to give quite a lot of free RAM, but after a few days and installing the regular apps, the amount of free RAM went down
Xperia Ultimate HD 5.0 with Alliance kernel.Fast, stable with unified and pretty design. Before this one I used Gagan's Zelly Cream 3.0.1 as my daily ROM,that one was good too but UHD 5.0 is faster and prettier.Dont like Jelly Bean ROMs because they have crappy camera and are often buggy.
I use CM 10 ... I used to run on MIUIv4 ... but sice I ve tried JB everything has changed ... ICS is slow for me and GB is old. I think it s worth of HDMI and 720p recording.
I just moved from STROID to Xperia Z Jelly Bean purely for 'beauty' reasons. I installed the ROM last night and have been really impressed by its beautiful GUI. I don't plan to play a lot of games so I don't know whether it can perform well for heavy games.
It's always a question of Performance or Appearance
I use 4.2.2 Mike's rom with few Xperia apps to get stock feel it's pretty stable also latest rom we can enjoy latest features... Only thing i'm missing is camera quality

MegaFire V23: brought performance and speed optimizations learned while developing PopRocks lp n4 build...also a rebuilt camera taking incredibly high res shots...enjoy the new update
MegaFire V22: while I wasn't even planning on doing another MegaFire as I honestly thought that was the end of the road...but I've been going thru some other rom builds updating them this weekend as well an found this huge leap in snappiness and immediacy that i couldn't not build into MegaFire and truly complete this build with the best possible rom imo possible...i hope you all enjoy v22
V20 Basically Took v18 and polished it, increased the touch response, animation and transition speed, and fluidity of the build as a whole...also enhancements done to the screen for sharper detail and punchier colors...sharper still photos and higher detail...improved call clarity/sound quality...and optimized the battery/run temp...if you follow the optimized setup I posted in op2 on a clean flash of V18 your mega will feel like a brand new, much more powerful kit...enjoy
V20 is the culmination of over 40 roms of jelly bean on the mega, with newer stuff pulled from Megakat and firekat note 3 roms...
V20 kept the performance and battery life of classic MegaFire roms with increased screen clarity, call quality, photo/video quality, streaming speed and video quality...i basically wanted to flush out the rest of the build to be as optimized as the performance...enjoy
New in v20 builds: mainly rendering, debugging, performance, and battery life enhancements and Optimizations...refining this rom to the absolute is the goal plain and simple...pulled every new trick I could think of

Extensive modifications to build prop, system, and Xml files make this rom extremely fast and smooth. I took all the tweaks and customizations from the previous 10 roms as well as from tweaks pulled from my other device's roms'
There is a stock rom V20 with all added features and Samsung Apps
A second stripped build V20X comes super stripped and streamlined with only Chainfire's SuperSu Apk

Since V18X is extremely stripped down i left V20 more stock for this build...
All Knox apps are removed
Elm Agent Removed
App Mobile Print Apks Removed
Story Album Removed
V20X Features
All background and system tweaks for speed, performance, and battery life just like V20
No additional apps except SuperSu and Viper4Android
Significant Amount of System and Stock Apps Removed: 86 in total
SuperSu by Chainfire only added app
Extensive Xml tweaks, edits to the source code, and various other system and background optimizations
Cuts to the system and removing a lot of useless apks and apps
Main focus of V20X is optimizing speed and battery life
V18X is completely stripped: 750 to 900 mb of ram open and 10 running system apps total
To use the Xposed Mods: open Xposed App and go to Modules
Make sure a check mark is visible beside the apps that you want activated
Reboot.
Upon Reboot go into the apps that you activated and set them up however you want them.
**** For any mod that you do not want to use or keep on your phone simply uninstall from Application Manager like any other up.
**** I Included several mods but there are a ton more mods available in xposed downloads section for you to choose from.
I always highly recommend Wanam and use it myself for a ton of things
Known Issue:
The one and only issue that I've found has been the Stock Samsung Video Player which is still included in both Builds as it works in certain regions MX is not included in V20X so if Samsung doesn't work you'll need to download a video player if necessary
*** The problem with Samsung Video is certain regions csc codes are incompatible with this application and will open but force close when attempting to play a video, so I included the much higher quality MX Player for everyone. If you have this force close issues with Stock Video use MX, if stock works you have the option of either video player but i still recommend MX as its far far superior to Samsung player
**Just make sure to download the codecs for MX and Viper

How To Optimize Your Setup: my personal method to the absolute best possible performance and battery life...combined with v16 will take your mega to another level...enjoy
Ive had a bunch of pm about my setup so here ya go...for the absolute mlst optimal experience on Mega fire V15 follow this setup. ..
1. Uncheck Force Gpu Rendering in developer options...about phone, click MegaFire V15 10 times to unlock dev options
2. Use Wanam and Xposed to deactivate Dvsf under Advanced in Wanam...dramatic boost
3. Change Animation and Transition settings in developer options...set all 3 from 1.0x to 0.5x. ..another huge boost to responsiveness and speed of any launcher
4. Greenify all downloaded user apps...Dont touch system app/don't activate greenify xposed mod
5. Disable the follow apps
Samsung Push Service
Google Chrome
Google Books
Google Magazines
Google Music
Google Hangouts
Google Plus
*obviously unless you use any of the above
6. Install latest Google Play Services apk...def seems to have lower battery drain that previous few apks...thanks to pierriotis for the apk
https://mega.co.nz/#!6JpBAaYZ!xyyIchYpDHrS-1IzZjK2_OHVilzkihb-U1960ZaLhaQ
7. Disable google location history and location reporting...doesn't affect maps or g now at all only stops a ton of data mining and wake locks
8. Never use power saving mode with my roms as I rebuild the Ps controller
Enjoy the new build...literally for those who want v15 on crack and steroids...use multicore controller or setcpu to max throttle the cpu lol then you're head will be spinning

Sorry bout the delay...I wouldn't have made the op earlier had I known mega was gonna fail several times and upload super slow...it's about 35% done and shouldn't be long...I'll post the link for the rom as soon as it's done loading...it's just at 1 gb so it shouldn't be a long download...hope you enjoy it...I've been testing it right about 20 hours...still 40 percent battery after some seriously brutal heavy use to try and break my rom...haven't come across a single stutter or lag even right after flash...hope you dig it.

I based it off an mh2 stock tar build that I had...I used that since it was the last one prior to any Knox. Selinux just began on the latest update. My other mega is on stock mj2 and it has no selinux either. I was just going to start de compiling the ml1 to deodex that build like I did the mh2 and start to work on the kernel then I saw your thread.

Oh I totally understand believe me ....I'm sorry you had problems with those aosp ROMs as I had none at all.
Never had a reboot or dropped call or wifi ...if you go back to cm try a clean install if you didn't already and no data restoring ...I start fresh with each flash and make a backup once completed ..I have every ROM backed up for whenever I wanna change ... But sorry back to MegaFire ......waiting for upload to finish cheerz:beer:

Thank you bonuzzz and Valera1978. This OmniROM directly built from source is out of the box the smoothest and reactive ROM I've seen on the T-900, and it's also fully Open Source AOSP. I have been fortunate to run this version in alpha and beta over the past 4 or 5 days and I have not seen any extraordinary issues with the release., on the contrary it's the most reactive ROM currently existing for the T-900.
Note for v.2 - Be very patient in flashing v2, from that system format starts in TWRP until extraction kicks in there's currently a delay of up to 3 minutes
Just as under the SM-T900 cm11 tread, I have performed some functionality testing of the device and some extra features, they are shown below as working, not working or not tested. The functionality grid was developed based on weaknesses in earlier AOSP builds and ports for the large format Samsung Tab/Note Pro family:
- mtp - to activate go to Settings/About tablet/ and tap 8 times on Build number - The menu will now have Settings/{ } Developer options/ activated. Check mark USB debugging notify.
- adb
- External SD - working out of the box
- Ext4 SD card mounting on external SD card - Unfortunately, I don't have a free SD Card to test with, if someone is interested in performing the test and report back it would be great, but theoretically it should work
- USB OTG including USB storage
- Off-mode charging
- Encryption - failed restoration of encrypted backup data in TWRP 2.8.1.1, but this must be a TWRP issue - Encryption process in ROM takes about an hour to perform, if someone is interested in performing the test and report back it would be great, but theoretically it should work
-----------------------------------------
- Lid sensor
- IR blaster - I've used IR2.0
- OC settings - located in Settings/Performance/ if you swipe right between the grids a"power menu" is shown where a multitude of performance settings and information is available, most of them currently not used.
- Advanced reboot - to activate go to Settings/About tablet/ and tap 8 times on Build number - The menu will now have Settings/{ } Developer options/. Check mark Advanced reboot.
- Screen Rotation only seem to react if the app has a default setting. You can use the Set Orientation, or the Ultimate Rotation Control app to pick the rotation you desire.
-----------------------------------------
- Play Store
- Google Play movies download and playback
- Google Play streaming Movies & TV
- DRM - tested with Audible, Google Books and Amazon Kindle
-----------------------------------------
- Zona
- Popcorn Time - need upgrade to latest version 2.3 beta, includes built-in VPN and Chromecast support with subtitles, earlier version timed out
- YouTube 1080p playback - 1440p will work w. v5.9.0.12, but I believe this to be a false positive
- Netflix
-----------------------------------------
- Chromecast with #MirrorEnabler hack, allowing for screen cast
- MHL connector
- Miracast
-----------------------------------------
- Capacitive lights - I assume this is the backlights for the capacitive buttons
- Capacitive keys
- Home button - correct function performed
- Brightness manual + auto
- Vibrator
-----------------------------------------
- GPS lock and voice directed navigation
- WiFi both 2.4 GHz & 5 GHz are working
- Bluetooth
- Microphone
- Audio on both speakers
- Headphones
-----------------------------------------
- Camera - in progress the camera "works", but does not allow for single shots to be taken, and crashes in video mode, but panorama shots are working
- Torch as of v2
- Camera Sensors as of v2
-----------------------------------------
- Xposed Framework and modules - need re-initialization after each boot (common to all cm ROM's)
- Superuser - installation of SuperSU from TWRP is recommended - make sure to enter into SuperSU settings and execute "Install SuperSU backup script", under the CUSTOM ROM label, before re-flashing a ROM update.
- Hangouts Dialer phone calls via Hangouts
-----------------------------------------
All fixes are in progress and will hopefully be sorted out in the new upcoming release
The following are standard limitations and options for OmniROM:
Write access to your external SD-card works out of the box, but just in case i suggest to d/l JRummy's SD KitKat Fixer
init.d support also works out of the box, otherwise d/l Uni-init by Ryuinferno.
If you think to much heat is building up use Performance/Governor set to ondemand, or conservative and I/O Schedduler to bfq, in addition to increase battery time you can set Wi-Fi/Advanced/Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep/ to Only when plugged in and make sure the Wi-Fi/Advanced/Wi-Fi optimization/ is checked and reduce Display/Sleep/ to below 1 minute. You can also use some apps to improve battery eg Easy Battery Saver, or the more sophisticated AutoCon+ Save Battery & Data and and to put hanging apps to hibernation Greenify that I believe require Xposed Installer. To improve charging time, you can use an app eg Faster Charger. Finally, I have also used PurePerformances in order to further improve the performances and VIPER4AndroidFX to allow for louder speaker sound and enhanced listening experience.
new version is released. sensors are fixed. camera is not working yet
I have read about, and been curious about, omnirom for a long time now. I love this tab smt 900 but have not had a lot of luck with development so far. I am a tinkerer, i like to flash a rom, tweak to my satisfaction and run it for a long time. I will stay here for a few days to see if it gains speed and these issues are fixed. If so, it looks like a great daily driver. Currently running the cm build that @arcadia2uk helped with. THANK YOU ALL for your efforts and contributions so people like me can have so much fun. Looking forward to it.

Personally, I'm using XHaloFloatingWindow together with Floatifications and it works very well in landscape mode (I have not tried in portrait).

That is the exact setup I am using on the SM T900. XHalo and Floatifications. It is close to halo on PA. I am on the cm 11 ROM but I am confident the ROM is irrelevant as to functionality.
I'm a huge fan of OmniROM and very happy to have it on my T900.
I'm shocked this project hasn't gathered more interest, CM is becoming convoluted while Omni, strictly IMHO, is generally a lighter/cleaner ROM.

Good question... There is nothing to release. Onmi L is very unstable for this tab because it doesn't have support of exynos platform. I dont have enough time and patience to port everything to omni. So I recommend to take a look to CM11.

Man, I'm sorry to hear you say that.
I'm running Omni on my T900 and love it. Everything runs fine for me. The only problem I run into, frequently, is the sensor issue. Basically I can't get the screen-rotation working with any consistency. Every now and then I can play with display auto-rotate settings (disabling, running an app while in a certain orientation, then enabling auto-rotate again .. things like this) that will prompt a rotation. However, 95% of the time I can't get the screen to rotate.
Other than that, I have zero problems with your port to the T900. It would be great if you would stick it out, it's a great alternative to CM!
Thanks again!

I have been thinking about trying this OmniROM instead of CM12...the only thing holding me back is the lack of camera.

That is good news. From page 1 it states backlight & camera not working. In this case, will give it a test run. Sounds like fun & thanks!:good:
P.S. Isn't the T900 the SWEETEST tablet you have ever put your hands on?!?!?
Reporting back...
Hi,
I installed OmniROM and was immediately pleased with 1 thing in particular...OmniROM's brightness level (on the brightest level), seemed to be brighter than CM12. I liked the status bar mods (network in / out counters), date / time mods but would nice to be able to adjust colors indepently and also support theming. The camera works fine. I do have issues with auto rotation and hard keys backlight don't illuminate. Other than these 2 items, the ROM boots very fast, stable & responsive. Great job & will keep an eye out for updates. I am happy to be a test / data point and will be running OmniROM as my daily driver for the time being.
Kind Regards,

Any reason why T320 is not have this ROM? Its Snapdragon based so I would have thought it would be easier.
The camera stopped working for me or perhaps wasn't working fully before. Any chance on an update that will fix camera?
Appreciate it...

Appreciate the tip.
I actually went back to CM12 but miss a lot of things about OmniROM. I am rather surprised there are not more custom ROMs available in general for the Tab Pro 12.2" (SM-T900) [Beanstalk, Slim, PAC, etc.]. You would think there would be given the greatness of this tablet regarding size and performance. I keep patiently hoping and waiting with optimism.

General Rom Review/ Kernel Request

i have tried 3 roms for this device since i got this phone, in my own observation and satisfaction here's my review
Stock Rom(Miui 12)- a bit laggy for me and not fully optimize for multi tasking or gaming, ram eater but very good battery life thanks for 33 watts charging
Pixel Experience- still has bugs like camera video and I also dont like that it doesnt have built in gallery app, only google photos. its good for gaming and multitasking, efficient ram usage I guess. good battery life, fast charging works
EvolutionX- this is my currently rom and im loving it no bugs so far, but also dont have built in gallery app, but thats ok gaming is superb here and the ram usage is all so good. bad news is fast charging doesnt work.
My conclusion is, there is no perfect rom this device yet, lets wait for our beloved developers and support them.
I would love if someone made a kernel that supports 33watts fast charging, optimized ram usage for gaming and multitasking.
I've tried Pixel Experience as well and am now on dotOS (vanilla with microg).
There's a Gcam mod working perfectly, see other threads.
I consider both are very good - and I prefer to install a gallery app of my liking, so it's good there's no preinstalled one!

I found and set the functional camera to select the lens.
Gcam7.3.018_Greatness.Build2.3.apk (camera)
main[1].xml (my config file)
1) Install the camera. Uninstall the previous GCAM if you cannot install.
2) Start the camera and go to the settings. Config>Save>"a" (SAVE).
3) File main[1].xml copy to /sdcard/gcam/Configs7/
4) Start the camera, double-click this place (photo below) select main file>RESTORE
You get the settings, Wide, Main, Macro lens.
Video works only in normal mode. Slow doesn't work.
So everything will work in this GCAM!

Excellent
Developer from dotOS comes with Bliss.
Tested Bliss ROM 14 (vanilla) with a clean flash, but cannot recommend it at this time.
It doesn't have signature spoofing, so no easy installation of microG.
Also it wrecked the ADB connection, the phone was not recognized by my iMac anymore and I had to reflash MIUI Stock Rom from a windows computer to repair.
Also some UI glitches.
Needs more development, so I'll stick with dotOS in the meantime.
