Google Nexus phones won't run stock android anymore. - Nexus 6P General

http://bgr.com/2016/06/02/2016-google-nexus-phones/
This could be good or bad.
It could be bad and me might have something like Samsung or LG and never get updates. (however, i dont think it will come to this as i feel that would take almost everything that makes a nexus a "nexus")
It could be good and the "Nexus" line might turn into something more along the lines of "Google Play Edition" or more like a Moto X style rom.
To me this makes much more sense. We still get the essence of pure android with a few cool tweaks.
If this were to be the case the number 1 thing i hope that comes out of it is that the OEM would provide the camera app instead of the garbage one Google has.
This was such the case with the HTC One M7 Google Play Edition (or was it an M8?)
And with HTC rumored to make the next set of Nexus phones we might just get that. Hopefully they dont use a garbage sensor though like HTC has recently been known to do.
What do you guys think this could mean?

We don't run "stock Android" now. All that article means is that the stock rom on Nexus phones will get more built in features.

Nexus phones aren't selling well so they need something to give them more selling power. The average consumer sees Samsung phones etc with "amazing" feature so will buy that over a Nexus. The fact Google tried to market the 6P more at the mainstream shows that they're truing to get away from a developer type of phone and more features in the software shows this.Im not entirely happy with this, I'd rather have a pure Android phone and be able to the devs cook something better up rather than have a phone with unnecessary features which ultimately slow it down.

This.
I welcome new, proprietary features in Google's Android. I trust them not to bog down the OS like other OEM's do. After all, it's their OS.

This is great news and what might bring me back to a Nexus phone in the future. Stock Android is way too boring and feature thin imo. I definitely wouldn't mind features added by Google all while not bogging it down and keeping it lean.

Uhh how about no. The reason I stick with Nexus phones is for the pure android experience. This just says they don't understand their customer base at all, and are instead focused on the people who buy other phones (let them have their other phones).

Read this. It will help explain. Nexus phones are Google's Android complete with their proprietary apps and services. I happen to love it, but it is what it is.

I don't see it that way at all. I just see this as the next step in the evolution of android. Naturally more and more features are added. The current form of android is much more feature packed than, say, the version that came on the galaxy nexus and previous. Those earlier versions didn't even have quick settings tiles, even though the galaxy s phones did. Would you prefer to be that way still? I sure as hell couldn't do without QS in the drop down. So, if you prefer having those over not having them, then you need to accept the next step. Besides, quick settings are one of MANY features added since the start. Go back to an unmodified galaxy nexus, I'm sure you would hate it after having what you have now. Face it, features get added as the OS matures.

Right but those are now base features of stock Marshmallow. What I don't want is Google building their own Touchwiz or something else that only the Nexus phones get. That's hardly what I see as the answer. I hate what Samsung, LG, etc. do to the OS on their phones. But I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Interesting article, but it seems more like a semantics issue than anything. I guess I fall into the group of "Stock Android" meaning as shipped on the Nexus phone by Google. But specifically in that it felt basically functional versus flashy and bloated like the rest of the manufacturers tend to shoot for. I don't want iOS, I don't want Touchwiz, I don't want any of the other variants. So to me it's like AOSP and Stock Android have blended and become synonymous to me. *shrugs*

I really think you're reading way too much into this. All the article says is that Google will be thoughtfully adding more features. Four years ago the quick settings tiles would have been one of these new features. Two years ago the fingerprint reader would have been one of these new features. This year with Android N multi-screen will be one of these new features. These have all been steps forward for Android, adding functionality and improving the UX. Adding new features doesn't mean they're going to add a skin or some of the bloaty crap that Samsung add, it just means new features.

This thread is just a huge facepalm..
Really if Google wants to slap a custom skin over stock android then who am I to care? Google always designs their devices to be customisable. So say you don't like it then you could flash a custom ROM built off of AOSP and you have what you wanted.
The Nexus line has always been built more for the developer crowd, but I have a feeling they're trying to reach out to your average consumer by adding "Features" while still appealing to the developers with the openness that they've always had.

These assumptions don't make sense and you are reading too much into it. A custom skin? After all the money they spent and researching and developing Material Design? They won't change anything, they will add new features as times goes one. Android N is already an example of this. The design paradigm will change eventually, it will be an evolution to Material Design, just like Material Design succeeded Holo.

There's always custom ROMs, as long as the bootloader's still easy to unlock who cares if they add more to stock rom, people will always create custom ROMs. If you don't know how to unlock and install a custom ROM then maybe a nexus just isn't for you.

The next change will be a huge one. Too many people complaining about the way MD looks. Even app developers are starting to refuse to use the MD guidelines. Can't say I blame them when people would rather pirate older versions instead of using the MD versions.

I wouldn't count on there always being roms. Google has even began not pushing fixes to aosp. Many developers are seeing this. Google will fix something in the release builds but never updating the code to aosp. So aosp stays broken.

Sources? That's doesn't seem right to me. MD apps are increasing day by day. If anything, only a niche of people complain about MD, and not because they don't like it, but because they tend to prefer apps not to change the design they have been used to for ages. Recently even Google said Material Design is being adopted at a really fast rate. It won't change any time soon, that is certain.

Go look at the Google groups. The people that don't like it just really don't like it. It's not that they don't want things to change. MD is a running joke that people say should have a fisher price copyright to it lol
Me personally. I don't update any app that updates to the MD guidelines. I have like 15 apps with updates that will never be updated

Well considering the people here are the same percentage that mod their devices that is alot of people. I wouldnt call anyone that uses MD a designer. Not hard to find inspiration from a pre-K kids class lol.
I make my own themes and theme the apps on my phone so I personally dont have to worry about MD at all.
Its nots a surprise that alot of people like it. When their first thought of a phone is getting 5hr SOT (losers lol) and their first device was an iphone. What I and many devs find funny is that people were making fun of apple with the fruity design and yet its ok for google. And people wonder why devs dont take the average person seriously.

You can find them around. They are all for personal use and I only share them with a few other devs and users on the site. Just have a look for Zelendel and gotham and you will find some older ones easy enough.
I never share my themes with normal users for reasons.

[Q] Why de-sense?

I have always been a little confused by some people that by and HTC phone. You see it in every HTC phone forum. People by the latest and greatest HTC phone just to get rid of Sense. You know going into buying an HTC phone it has Sense but you don't like it. Why not just wait for the GNEX? I had an ERIS. I understand trying to get every inch of speed out of your phone. This phone doesn't need that. With the Eris I even ran a Sense based ROM because it just seemed to actually be the smoothest thing to run on it. This phone was built for Sense. It just needs to be optimized and tweaked a little. On my ERIS I flashed pretty much every ROM made for that guy. Always went back to Sense. Just felt right. But if I didn't like Sense, I would have never bought this phone. I am just trying to get some feedback from the rest of you guys/girls to get a better understanding of this trend.
Well in my case I got the sensation because it was dual core. Solid screen size and it was out about 6 months before the gs2. I never had much of a problem with sense other than the fact that it's a ram hog. I would imagine people buy HTC products because of the hardware.
Sent from my Sensation 4g using XDA App
So that you have less programs taking resources from other programs.
HTC makes good hardware. Up until they started being strict about locking the bootloader, you get the phone for the hardware, design (prefer theirs over Samsung), you could buy the phone and put other roms on there that are faster. Nexus phones are good only because of the software, but hardware wise its usually a little behind. So if you could put the same software on better hardware, its a better option.
Because HTC has some decent phones, but Sense is an abomination. We want the hardware, but not the ****ty software. It's a pretty simple concept.

Replace sense with a different launcher and watch how much more battery life and snapper the phone runs and you'll understand too.

What do you find an "abomination"/"****ty"? I just find that most people end up running a CM ROM then re-sense it with second had apps or built in features of the launchers they are using.

I have run different launchers. I actually did before I my OP. I personally didn't feel like that phone was super "snappier" or that battery changed much. Battery has been more of a screen/radios issue. I have been averaging 16 hours with normal use on the regular battery.

I could rant for hours about why I hate Sense. It breaks compatibility, removes features, generally looks completely fugly (not so much now a days but on my Evo 4G, it's terribly ugly), performance issues, battery issues, closed nature is against my GNU ways, severely ****s up contacts (embeds notes into your Google Contacts in the cloud, often times doesn't sync properly etc), spams you about some ****ty HTC Sync option every time I plugin to my PC which is 300% useless as I run Linux on my desktop, and the list goes on and on.
CM7 is overall just a huge improvement. I love not being tied to HTC's garbage, being able to build and tweak my own ROMs *from source*, getting updates for newer versions before 99% of phones have them, etc.

That's like buying a new car for the the power train only. There is going to be something comparable to the rezound in no time. If you hate HTC's twist on android why support them by buying there phone? Business see numbers, if they are selling their phones like hot cakes they think you pretty much like the overall phone. They are gonna just keep expanding and refining sense.
HTC isn't suddenly going to stop using Sense because I didn't buy their phones (which, btw, I've already stopped doing, samsung > *), and if we think that sense is total **** (which it is), why shouldn't we remove it? We're not paying for the OS, we're paying for the phone.

I understand the whole being able to fully customize to your liking. That's why I am asking, iF you have such a hate for Sense why would you financially support what they are putting out? I also understand your a dev so you love linux and the more pure android experience. Would you buy and iPhone if you like the specs on it? I hate apple products personally, if their specs on somthing was awesome and I could change their OS to my liking I still would not but and apple product!
Hrmm... Let me see if I can figure this out.
Post a message on a developer-centric website.
About an Android Phone.
Wondering why people would want to customize the software to their liking.
I smell Troll.
It's not only the internal hardware, but the overall quality of HTC phones is great. Compared to Samsung phones, these are much more solid. Also, until this phone, HTC has been extremely friendly for devs. Nobody expected this phone to be locked down for this long.
And don't even start with apples way overpriced locked down phones.

I think we can see where you are coming from, but it's really not as simple as you are making it out to be. There are really only a few choices out there, so there might not be one that fits exactly what people want as a whole. So we make do with what we can, like buying an htc phone for the hardware and updating the software to our liking.

Your question was why buy a phone that had sense on it, knowing it was there, rather than buying another brand and supporting HTC Financially when you didn't like the software.
For me, I didn't really know if I would like Sense or not. Having not run Sense on an Android phone, I was at least interested to try. I had Sense on an old Win-Mo phone, but had not had a chance to try the latest/greatest.
I suspected that I wouldn't like it (and I don't ... I'm not into social media, and I like to tweak my launcher bar, screen size, etc .. things I can't do with Sense), but this particular phone is still the best you can buy at this moment. Best screen, CPU, etc. While the G-Nex has some appeal, I had hoped this phone would give me the best of all worlds (Try Sense, if I don't like it, unlock, go AOSP, etc.).
My 'dig' at you was simply that on this type of site, in this type of environment, we aren't just 'users'. We are tweakers at a minimum, and some even hav dev skills. So the concept of taking ANY phone and not 'ripping it apart' doesn't fit. If it was a Samsung phone, we'd be trying to get rid of Touchwiz, if it was Motorola, we'd want free of MotoBlur.

If you have never had a sense phone I could understand trying it. Thanks for posting what you don't like about it too. I am not against switching ROM's customizing to your liking. I am totally for it. Like you said if we are here we are tweakers at minimum. I was more questioning the people the first day it was out wanting s-off to get ride of sense. Then recently the desense utility came out. It just sparked my interest. Who knows when ICS comes out if I will still want sense myself.

Pretty good article from PCMag.com about Google's Android Update Alliance

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2397729,00.asp
Essentially saying that it's pretty much dead already.
I never bought the hype around it. Unless Google lays down the law..they will always half ass give updates.
They don't make money upgrading existing devices when they can just crank out new devices with minimal upgrades.
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D using xda premium
Yeah I'm surprised they even bothered agreeing to such an 'alliance' when carriers would have to sacrifice their bloatware and faster phone turnover. On the plus side it seems like HTC will be focusing more on quality over quantity. A few mouths back there was an article on them using better camera hardware, another article discussed better sound I believe, and last week I read how they are slimming down the number of devices so they can concentrate more on a smaller lineup.
That being said I would like to see a pure Google phone from HTC/Sprint. Sitting around waiting for them to release OS updates is a joke, not to mention the hoops devs jump through in order to bring us ROMS.

I'm a huge fan of HTC and Sense, I just don't see HTC making a "Google Phone" with Sense. It'll be another Nexus One.
Truth of the matter is Google can't force OEMs and Carriers to update older devices to whatever is the latest and greatest.
OEMs are not compensated for their add ins (TouchWiz, Sense, etc). If there was some direct compensation by Google they would feel obligated to bring out timely updates.
As some of you know, the OEMs do this to differentiate themselves from the android pack.
Also from a marketing standpoint, it hurts sales if their older models had the newest OS. There would be no incentive to upgrade your handset if it runs everything you already have.
Fragmentation is here to stay unless Google makes OEMs release two different updates for each phone. One with vanilla (working drivers etc) and one with the add-ins.

+1.
This is why I love teams like CM who create AOSP roms from source...
Android being so "open" is actually why everything is so fragmented. It won't change...it may even get worse as companies continue tap-dance around it and consumers get tired of asking why. Eventually we'll just accept it.
Sadly, if you want all the updates then you'll have to move away from android.

My options of getting a Nexus
1. Leave Sprint and buy a Galaxy Nexus, Can't and won't do it..especially for a craphole like Verizon.
2. Buy a terribly dated Nexus S that was getting old when Sprint first started selling it. No thank you..

Which still falls under option 1.
I happen to be under contract and overall happy with what I get from Sprint. Never any nickel and dime surprises on my bill that I got relentlessly from AT&T and Verizon.
We are basically stuck, but it is what it is. Money makes the world go'round and we should be happy we get updates at all I guess..

Very true. I'd rather be in this situation than be in the iTunes world, that's for sure.
I personally think that CyanogenMod should release their own line of phones.
Why wait and hope for someone to make exactly what we all really want? Just build it.
I do think I would honestly move ASAP to any carrier that allowed a such a phone on their network.
I can only imagine all the hurdles to get over to make it happen, but, wouldn't it be sweet??

I hope this never happens. Cyanogen would just become another OEM, and would need to make decisions about what phones to upgrade, when to upgrade those phones, and which ones to leave behind. Plus, Cyanogen also needs dev support from members of each type of phone they support. So, if a dev goes to a different phone, the support for that phone will either need to be transferred to another dev, or support may be dropped. Right now, the cyanogen team is on top of the world. I want them to stay there.
What I would like is for manufacturers like motorola and htc to treat their boot loaders more like Samsung, and LG. They don't need to be encrypted.

DNA and Kit-Kat....Sounds dirty

So looks like it will be out soon...but not to soon. Hope we get some nice ROMs when it launches. Love that 4.3 has trim support. Wounder what 4.4 will bring us.

Great more bloatware, wonderful. I can see it now, Hershey inspired games like candy crush flooding the market.
It should come in chocolate brown.
The deal between KitKat and Google wasn't really based on advertisment. They used KitKat as the name for 4.4 because not many people actually eat Key Lime Pie. KitKats are more relatable.

I don't eat froyo, gingerbread or doughnuts, doesn't mean advertising for another company is a good way to relate to me or users. Key lime pie was a perfectly acceptable name, everyone has heard of it at some point, even if they haven't tried it, like me. Its advertising, plain and simple, I don't care what Google says, by using a company / product name they're advertising them, period.
I don't eat kitkats, either. Twix and snickers are more my thing

Well, money is money, why would they turn it down? But no, you got it backwards, they're advertising kit kats, we're not talking kit kats with Google on them. You yourself even said it was recognition, more so then key lime pie would afford. That's ....advertising. Unintentionally done or not, Google is advertising for a product.
Tapatalked from my HTC DNA - Carbon
Yesterday i read an article saying that Google did this so the new Android version would be more recognizable among phones instead of being referred to as TW, Sense, or Blur. That's kind of a warped connection but it makes more marketing sense than the official reason Google gave; not many people know what key lime pie tastes like. I've never had a froyo or honeycomb although I've had honey. Google also said they made the decision within a couple hours but i would think it would take days of negotiation between such huge companies as Google and Nestle.

No! I'm sorry if that came off wrong! I just found it funny that there actually are going to be android kit kat bars. I didn't mean to offend!
Here's an article i just ran into referring to Android being "forgotten" by Samsung

I'm still confused as to how the name of the OS will make the OS more recognizable.
Article mentioning the name change is for the OS' brand awareness

I hope so. Right now, it's just sappy commercials and rumors. 4.2 had aesthetic features, 4.1 was project butter, 4.3 seemed under the hood with nothing crazy. I expect big things out of 4.4 and hope it's not two doh's in a row.
Something I am expecting for in 4.4 or 5.0 is full-color emoji support. Freetype, which Android uses to encode text, now supports color bitmap icons in text (emojis) with freetype 2.5 so we might see it. I know most of the people here couldn't care less about emojis, but in complete honesty, the mock emojis in 4.1+ are just horrible. There is also a surprisingly large number of people who stick with the iPhone soully because of the lack of full color emojis.
To those of you who don't know what I'm taking about, these are emojis: ???☺??????????✌???❤????✈??????⚠??♨?????❇©®™?✔???☀?❄??????????????????✏??✒????✂???????????????????
On iOS devices, these show up in color with much higher quality icons.

[Q] A good "first android phone"?

Jumping ship from iOS to come to Android but with all of the latest great Android phones out there, it's hard to choose which one to pick. I'm familiar with Android already so I know what to expect. The question is, which of the latest and greatest Android smartphones would make a good "first android phone" to really get a good feel of the Android OS.
Edit: Woops, forgot to mention my carrier. I can go with Sprint or T-Mobile.

Which carrier are you planning to use for service? As this will depend which phone you should look into. If you really want to get a good feeling for Android the Nexus 5 is an excellent choice (Not available on Verizon) with the fastest updates, pure AOSP Android and great development support if you want to get into customization. The Galaxy S4 is also a good choice (Available on all major US carriers) it runs Samsung's Touchwiz on top of regular Android, Touchwiz adds many of it's own features to stock Android. However it has slower updates then stock Android and not everyone likes Samsung's customizations. Let me know if you still have questions.

Yea, I have been looking into the Nexus 5 a lot. I actually already ordered it but with the 3 week backorder, I have time to cancel it and pick something else if I decide I like something better. Thanks for the advice.
I'm wondering, do you have a Nexus 5? Because I'm reading reviews about a "washed out" screen but I'm not sure what they meant by that exactly.
I'm thrilled with the LG G2. I spent the past couple of years on the Galaxy Nexus and I don't mind the additions to the UI that LG brings, including some great camera software and extra multi tasking options. The screen is arguably the best on the market, it comes with 32gb, tri band LTE capability, world phone functionality, a 13mp camera that is neck in neck with the iPhone in reviews, and it's only $99 with contract at Best Buy on all carriers. I believe you can get it online or in the store and get some kind of $50 gift certificate deal too.
Those that prefer pure Google Android can argue, but, like the Moto X, there really is no bloatware and LG adds functionality straight up Google doesn't have including better camera software. AND, in about a month it will have Kit Kat.
Totally worth a stop at Best Buy to play with it.

I don't personally have a Nexus 5 (I have a Verizon Galaxy S3), but in general reviews have been positive. What they mean by "washed out" is colors may not appear to be as sharp or vivid or blacks might not appear deep enough, keep in mind what appears "washed out" to someone may not be to another person as result this can be somewhat subjective.

Lollipop Rant

I just wanted to rant a bit, just because I was so excited about Lollipop I could hardly take it. Now that I have tried it on my G2, I was expecting more of the cool animations that Google showed off. I was more or less expecting anything that was updated to the latest version with gapps, there would be a big difference on how the app functioned and presented itself.
I do realize it is an alpha build I was testing, but I was expecting to be wow'd. The dialer was the only thing that actually had the cool animations that were really similar to what Google showed off. I can actually say that I will wait now until there is more things designed around Lollipop and I hope I can still be wow'd.
I guess I don't understand how Google can come up with all these great ideas, but fail to execute them properly. I am certainly no Apple fan boy, but at least Apple can showcase what they have and everyone gets to use it right away. I feel like Google says, this is what are OS can do, but the developers need to do it. Why not show what can be done with their own stuff. I tried Google Music to see if did what the demo showed and nope, just not there yet.
I hope that I am wrong, and Lollipop will mature to something awesome. Mind you, what I did like was how smooth it felt for an alpha build. Something did startup much quicker, but I guess I will have to wait and see how things play out.

Well may be you were over excited about it but for sure your opinion is wrong acc to me.
Apps has been designed well I like most the calender app and dialer.
I am not expecting some kind of magic in animations but they are cool.
I bet if the awesome devs didn't get us LP this would be a rage thread about not having LP instead of nitpicking LP. TL;DR count your blessings and be happy that you have the latest version on Android on your device.

I agree. Simple actions like choosing your google accounts from the sidebar aren't even animated. When you tap on the arrow, your accounts simple appear out of nowhere; you would have thought that Google would have at least put in a sliding down animation, or maybe even the slick animation in chrome when you tap on the overflow menu.

I did enjoy using Lollipop in it's alpha stage on my device. So my post was nothing in regards to the dev's, it was Google. I'm sure over time things will start coming together, but this was their biggest release, and I guess I was over-hyping myself.

There's now 2 different ROMs available for the D803 (AICP and CM), and a separate D803 kernel (from Render) that can be flashed onto D802 ROMs. And Rev3nt3ch is about to release a separate kernel as well, which should support D803.

Do you know what, what ever happened to Google Wowing everyone, everything they used to do made people sit up and take notice, but the past few years everything had been under whelming, since ICS nothing has really changed, colours are dark and flat, icons look dated and boring, they don't pop out at you, after using my nexus 10 since getting official lollipop Im not impressed. And as lg g2 will be skinned you won't tell any difference, you'll get the placebo effect "Omg its rapid" "it's so snappy" yawn everyone says this after every update.
Lollipop is making me happy. Different enough to feel new, but not changing things just for the sake of change. Of course my only experience with it is on my nexus 6, I am still waiting for an official update for my g2 since I need the Wi-Fi calling on T-Mobile. I never watched any of the preview videos from Google, only from tech sites that reviewed it and I didn't notice any differences. Either they showed something drastically different or the alpha builds for the g2 aren't complete, hence the alpha.

Well. At least Google is leading the race in new design compared to iOS and Windows Phone.
I can't believe I'm going to say this but here goes, ios is starting to look more fresh and clean compared to android, it's vibrant, bright and very good looking, the icons are complex and are very detailed. If iOS had widgets like android does I would jump ship.
Which icons are you talking about? If it's the app icons then complain to the app developers, not Google. Colors and theming are a very subjective thing, I personally like the direction android is going, others don't. The good thing about android is the ability to change it to suit your tastes, install another launcher or a theme changer.
