On Device Encryption
Play it safe with a security solution that enables the protection of mobile data without the need to sacrifice speed and functionality. The Samsung GALAXY S II is the first Android smartphone to adopt powerful encrypted hardware, minimizing the use of security software and applying encryption technology to the hardware itself, greatly accelerating security protection and achieving superior performance

this looks like a bit of a deal-breaker given samsungs poor update schedule.
I really hope they're not talking about an encrypted bootloader, although I seriously doubt they would state that as a feature.
sold my n8 1 month back and waiting for s2 with nokia 6300 and 3120 classic in my hand. so its better to wait buddy

This is about the functionality targeted at improving security for integrated business applications.
However, The issue as I see it is that if they do not also lock bootloader and ability to install custom root-level stuff out using hardware encryption, then any hardware encryption of user-space stuff is pointless. I predict they either lock it, or if they're clever, to diffuse hackers and modders interest in cracking the encryption they might allow you to unlock it at cost of removing the ability to integrate with business apps. (or other way around or poss with a sandbox of some kind)

of those two options, which one offers the fastest turnaround to market, so therefore cheaper to produce and faster to make money from? i wouldn't doubt samsung to completely lock this.
which imo goes against androids openness. you may as well have a custom crappy samsung operating system on it that's semi-compatible with android.
i thought google wanted to clamp down on skins completely? or is that just for tablets?

It's true that it's probably cheaper, but at the same time not as many will buy it, so in the end it might be a loss to them.

Guys could it be possible that s2 might have nand lock plus encrypted bootloader? Any ideas?
If it is the case then it will spell lotz of trouble for us as then even rooting will be a trouble....
And if by encrypted hardware.....does that mean that it will be difficult to find suitable drivers which will make cheating the bootloader difficult and also voids the kexec method employed in bypassing the x10 bootloader?

I gave a look at xda threads of those two phones. Everything you can dream of is availlable (last RC4 of cyanogenmod 7, among a lot of other roms).
For what I understood, the only real issue is modified kernels?
If this is the kind of limitation we are talking about, that's fine with me.

No custom kernels is a HUGE problem. Kernels are written for specific android versions. You can't run Android 2.3 (or even 2.2) on a 2.1 kernel (we had this problem with the motorola milestone). This means you have to wait till the manufacturer starts developing or else you are STUCK. So really, it is a huge limitation. Also, if the manufacturer doesn't support things like a swap partition, you will never be able to get it.
Hey all, I am bandroidx, a bravo developer. I ported CWM bootstrap to the bravo and recently released the first bravo rom. In the process I was sick of having to re-enable unknown sources all the time using the current methods and decided to make an app and I recently put it on the android market since it works for all att devices including the atrix. Most of the people who have bought the app so far arent bravo users but atrix users so I figured i'd post it here.
its not free but at $1.69 I made it paid in the hopes of supporting my future android development, I would like to purchase an atrix from ebay (as i did with my bravo) so I can do atrix specific development. Its also much cheaper then buying other apps to do this on your phone if you dont already own them. Either way, I find the app to be a time saver and have heard positive feedback from many atrix users. All you need is temp root to enable the unknown sources, then you dont need to be rooted. you can turn unknown sources on and off via the checkbox. The app also has a return to stock function incase you need it
you can get it from the android market here: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.bandroidx.nmaenabler&feature=more_from_developer
you can use the market contact developer link or pm here if you have any suggestions. I have heard att might stop this on future devices as it should be, lets hope that holds true. Of course for those of us with an already blocked device, I fear a workaround like this app will be our own choice till we upgrade to a newer device
thanks all

thanks, but we already have batch scripts that does this for free. It's not as quick as downloading an apk, but all you have to do is download the gladenable batch script and run it.
it would be nice to see other stuff from you though. hope you get the phone
ditto...if you're serious about getting atrix custom rom going i'd rather send you a virtual beer in the form of paypal...hopefully my sentiment is shared by others
edit: just donated to put my money where my mouth is. it will be nice to have you onboard the atrix efforts. cheers!
Nice app!
I applaud your effort, none the less, as someone already pointed out there are free alternatives that are truly not that much more of a hassle.
Most custom PsuedoROMs already do this by default and this non-market apps only applies to ATT users as all the other Atrix users out there dont have to deal with this at all.
Just a heads up!
still cool though, thanks for the app, i am surprised no one has created something this stupid-easy before, not that current methods aren't already pretty stupidly-easy, i am all for supporting good development but i too prefer to diy when free, thanks for the info though
Great app!!!
Moved to proper forum.
thank you for the app
I also like when is free, but some times you have to support. Its not because is free or not. Is because what the developers has done and is planning to do for the comunity. It wont hurt nobody donate a few bucks from time to time. Thanks.
thanks much for all the kind words, feedback, comments and gripes. I appreciate them all
Yeah basically I thought I could release this to compliment my free/donate versions of the apps and I know many people will do it the other ways, but I heard feedback that people wanted just an easy apk to do it, and I had the idea so I went for it.
I gave away my other apps for free (my recovery app is coming out for free soon too) but found that ads dont work well with rooted apps (something with rooted users and ad free lol). I will continue to do mostly free apps, thanks for understanding.
The app has actually gotten pretty popular, I am up to like 120 installs (about 70% atrix users and have added support for non-moto phones like the galaxy s (captivate). Today i noticed the app is #62 on the top new paid apps list thanks for all the support guys.
I dont have the funds yet but I am hoping to build up some more to check out some atrix's on ebay. I am not sure what they are going for, but I am expecting close to $500. I may see if I could get one with a cracked screen or some cosmetic damage that would still allow me to use it as a dev phone. As a matter of fact if any of you damage your atrix and it works but dont have insurance (liek a cracked screen) let me know

Hi! I am a fairly seasoned root user, although I have a lot of research to do for ICS. I am running the IceColdSandwich ROM and thus far only one crash, to be expected! I have the CPU oc'd to roughly 1.76ghz with smooth results. my question is... are task killers, any to speak of, safe for ICS? I realise that a solid killer is built in but...always curious. all comments welcome and NICE to have ALL features working on my Inspire 4G with an ICS 4.0.3 ROM.

This. The only time a task killer MIGHT be warranted is on a device with only 128mb of ram or less, and in that case it wouldn't be able to run ICS in any usable way at all. Android is efficient enough, dont fight with it for the sake of fighting with it.
Yep
is it any good i found this thing called avast for android antivirus that is a good program for finding your phone lots of good **** for rooted users
I guessed that, but went ahead and got system tuner pro for root users and therein lies the difference. It doesn't seem to interfere with data and phone calling capabilities. I am uploading a ss of my screen of root apps to indicate a bit of my endeavours...but one thing I know for certain is do NOT install AV apps...bad news. So avast is a bad thing indeed.

I've tried using various task killers. Back in the dark days of eclair/froyo I felt like advanced task killer actually did something.
Nowadays, whenever I've tried out a task killer it just slows my phone down loads and make everything run badly. Some people seem very attached to task killers, they're not worth the trouble.

Antivirus for Android is pointless. There are NO Android viruses. Don't think of Android in Windows terms. It's not Windows and so does not have the same vulnerabilies as Windows.
Antivirus companies depend on the fear and ignorance of their customers. Companies peddling antivirus for Android (or Linux) should at least be honest that it is only useful for scanning files to be transferred to Windows machines.
This doesn't mean there is no Android malware - there is. And a virus is a type of malware. But not all malware is a virus.

Do NOT use a task killer. It's uneccessary and actually causes problems and wastes battery. Android handles running processes and memory automatically and efficiently for you.

I agree as a basic cheap task killer does more ill than good...kills all without leaving the user much say in what he/she wants done. I previously posted that I use System Tuner Pro, which you may know has a pretty advanced task manager, not just straight killer (among many other features) and have found it to be quite invaluable as an addition to my root tools arsenal. Would you agree that an advanced manager for a fairly savvy user is advantageous? Thanks for your input!

Under NO circumstances is a task killer a good idea. The ONLY time you should kill a task is if an app is misbehaving and you need to force it down so it can restart. In those cases, just use the built in task killer in settings.
I seem to be getting the same info from a number of reputable xda members, and I have definitely made up my mind about killing tasks through an app. Thanks especially to you for adding specifics to your adamant claim against a task killer, that made up my mind indeed.
Kudos!
Sent from my HTC Inspire 4G using xda premium
Killing tasks isn't actually a big deal. Sure, if you use an app regularly then it's better to have it still in memory for when you next use it, but if you use it once a day then killing it after use does absolutely no harm whatsoever and does free up resources.
Task killer apps though aren't just for killing tasks. If they were we wouldn't even be having the discussion, due to the most excellent native task manager already in ICS. Task killer apps run in the background and use system resources, always checking the state of the system and any running apps, deciding the "best" way to handle your device. That's the bit that is pointless and you should avoid. If you run one of those apps then you're basically draining your battery and system resources on a totally unnecessary app.
In short - kill tasks? Up to you. Task killer/monitor - bad.
Why don't you look it up and find other threads about it, rather than hijack this one
Edit: Thanks, mystery mod, for deleting his posts.
Firstly, its not recommended to use task killers on your Android device, coz it drains up battery starting the app u killed all over again.
Although, if ur phone gets really slow, or else ur running out of RAM, the best task killer is :
Auto Task Killer
Look for it in the Market.
I used it when I had a Galaxy Spica. But after getting the S2, it doesnt really matter.
So...I just got an Android ~5 days ago. My friend told me to root the phone and get plain Android on it instead of HTC's bloated modified version of it. I'm not a newbie to SSH and managing linux via prompt (I assume rooting the phone is what that means?..) Anyway, I have no clue what I'm doing. I've been an iPhone user for...~2 years. I'm completely new to Android.
Can anyone start me on the right path, maybe give me some explanations as to what I'm actually doing? Does this void my warranty with Best Buy (probably...jailbreaking the iPhone does, but recovering from that is easy-peezy..)
I'd like to tinker with my phone, but it seems so much more complicated to fix the phone if I make an oops than doing so with an iPhone does.
Thanks in advance.
Assuming you have the DNA, as that is the section you are in, there is quite a few helpful threads already. Check the sticky posts, they usually link to helpful threads.
With the speed of the quad core phones, debloating isn't needed as much as before, but rooting does have it's ups and downs.
I found that AOSP (pure android) based roms compared to sense (HTC software) are a little mote buggy and not as fluid. They feel snappier, but really aren't.
Try some sense based roms before going full aosp on this device. Take it from me. My old devices, I would run only AOSP, but after usi.g sense 5 on this phone, it has so.e good HTC only features.
Sent from my DNA using my mind.
I'll echo Uzephi, give sense a try first. If you really want to tinker make sure to make a nandroid in recovery. You will probably need to use either moonshine or rum runner to do what's called s-off your phone first. That will also root it. I've found the easiest way to do that is to boot to a live USB Linux, then you don't have to deal with driver issues. If you have windows 8 or 8.1 64 bit there have been fastboot issues with drivers seeing the phone for some users, myself included. Give us some more info on what your PC set up and phone OS versions are and we can help some more when and if you want. Have you gotten the latest OTAs.

Android 4.2 is the base operating system and HTC customized it to their liking, which they call Sense, and you have version 5 of Sense.

Android phone manufacturers like to give their phones a specific look and feel, which is why android phones can look so different. This modification/augmentation of the base android software environment is commonly referred to as a UI (user interface), or Skin.
The term 'skin' is a terrible over-simplification, but it gets the point across. The vanilla Android software environment is, for many, quite boring, and not as powerful as it can be. Companies like HTC and Samsung incorporate cool animations, graphics, and sounds effects, as well as software that takes advantage of their camera's capabilities.
HTC's UI is called Sense
Samsung's is called TouchWiz Motorola's used to be called Blur (don't know if it still is)

If you're brand new to Android, I would just use the phone as it is now without rooting or putting a custom ROM on it. Once you're comfortable and familiar with Android then you can decided if you want to root and rom.

Rooting is akin to jailbreak, gaining control of your phone. You can root your phone (get root directory access) and still remain completely stock for your Rom.
I personally have had the best experience with sense based roms. Your experience may differ depending on what you use.
If you want to use mobile hotspot on your phone without paying subscription then rooting is a must.
Linux used to be a must to root. Now there are windows based options, I used moonshine.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure you don't have to pay extra to use your phone as a mobile hotspot if you're on a capped data plan. I think only unlimited data folks are expected to pay extra to use that feature.

That might be right. I've got the unlimited data. My co workers with company phones also have to pay for the hot spot.

Yes, correct, capped data is forbidden by law to charge for mobile hotspot, unlimited data is chargeable.
Edit* At OP, Sense is the king flavor of android, stick unrooted for a while as you won't really see a need for it yet, unless you want to go and throw on different ROM's and try them out, which in that case def. go and try viperDNA (best sense ROM avail.) AOSP/CM based ROM's are still a WIP and are ok to use but you will miss out on everything sense (sense apps, widgets, features, and even some hardware features)
Gaining root is becoming the sys admin of the phone, you would be able to read/write to the system partition of the phone and execute system privileged commands that are more for the hacker/modder/enthusiast (not normal user, you really wouldn't find a use for that type of stuff, the only app that would serve you good is "Titanium Backup" that does require root but it basically backs up all of the apps and their data)
To give a little background info: I'm complete noob as far as android is concerned and I just bought moto e to get me started with android world.
I don't know about others but I certainly feel overwhelmed by shear magnitude of this world and feel little lost >.>
So, put it in one line, I wold like to get help from experts and maybe other people who also bought this phone or something similar to make my life little easier as going all gung ho in app store doesn't seem like a good approach to me, especially with low bandwidth net I've.
As I mentioned, this is my first Android phone and I would like to know about the ''free'' apps which I should install for following things.
Protection from virus/spyware/theft?
File browser if it can extend the capacity of default browsing system.
Web browser which performs well on low bandwidth but is also decent.
Social networking apps (I've already installed Whatsapp as it was known to even gadget challenged person like me)
Ebook and PDF file reader.
Caller ID and call as well as voice recorder.
Those reviewers were not kidding when they said camera sucked on this phone, so if there any app to make it better/more useful?
App for sketching and drawing.
App for navigation (if there is need)
Small time games like racing and pool/snooker etc. I'm not really a game seaway so things on youtube looked too much for me .-.
Any other useful recommendations are welcome as well.
PS:
I did look for some other thread like this but I didn't find one so forgive me if this doesn't really live up to the forum standards, and feel free to delete/move it, if it doesn't. I apologize in advance.
Cheers!

Sorry about the section thingy, I saw the ''theme and app'' thing on the section header(?) so thought this would be the right place to go.
About the playstore, I'm browsing it, but its kind of difficult to separate whats useful from what not (being a newbie and all plus slow net kind of makes it difficult to try out everything, sorry if that sounds like an excuse). I guess, I was just looking for people who already use these and suggest the best.
I'm browsing the thread you linked so thank you for that.

Actually, anything that has human factor involved is a security risk, Linux or not. While Android OS itself might be very well secured, what you install on it makes world of difference (hence my reluctance), depending on sources. It is true that I'm noob to android gadgets, I'm very well familiar with Linux as that is what I use more than 90% of the time. On the Linux forum I'm frequent at, this topic usually causes ton of debate and after few good points it end with exactly what you said, so I wont fan that fire.lol Just wanted to know if there is one. And by the way, Virus=/=malware, virus is just one of the many forms of Malware. And even Linux is not ''that'' secure/immune from latter, its just less of a riped fruit to pluck, something contrary to its child; Android and hence the question.
When I said making cam better/more useful, it was more aimed at making its stock camera UI/app (w/e you may call it) a little more useful by adding more quality/functions or simply make came more easier to use with different UI, this has no bearings on camera hardware in question. I do apologize for wording this wrong in initial post though.
I'll install all your other suggestions, thank you very much for your patience. I appreciate it!

The only way you can be affected by a malware is if you install an infected/malicious app. If you stick with Play Store, the chances for that are minimal. Do not download apps from anywhere else and let Google verify it for you. Still if you're concerned there are plenty of antivirus apps on Play Store, use search button.
Also, try and read the description of an app before you install, see if it has the features you need. The ratings and reviews also help. Thats how learned it when I bought my first Android.
As for the camera UI, trust me, this is one of the best camera apps amongst stock ones. Its clean, simple and efficient. Still, if you wish to check some more, there are plenty on play store. You can try those. Camera 360, Perfectly Clear, for example. They will change the UI and have some cool after effects to apply.
@.glen First and foremost a warm welcome to the Droidland...
Antivirus> Not required at all/Avast
File Browser> ES File Explorer/Astro File Manager
Web Browser on low b/w> Opera Mini/UCBrowser
Video player> MX Player
These are the only apps available for your purpose and free...
No app will make your camera better...
Also try Nova Launcher...
Games> Angry Birds, Temple Run2, Subway Surfers, Jetpack Joyride, SSG2, Hill Climb Racing, Into The Dead, Cut The Rope2 to name a few...
Btw don't worry, we all were n00b at first...
But don't get overwhelmed, we're happy to help...
BTW, don't forget to click the Thanks button below my post if I helped ya... :good:

Welcome to the fabulous world of android!:highfive:
I've compiled a list of apps along with their respective play store links. I hope you'd find them useful.
My two cents worth:-
File browser: I use CyanogenMod File Manager. Root Explorer(Paid), ES File Explorer, etc are decent options.
Web browser: Dolphin Browser-It supports flash. If you want to conserve data you might look into Opera Mini
Ebook and PDF file reader: Moon Plus Reader-IMHO this is the best app for this purpose. Free and Paid options are available
Communication: Viber is a good option. I prefer it over LINE,WE chat, etc
Some other apps I think you should have:-
For optimizing RAM usage/hibernating apps: Greenify
Ad-blocking: AdblockPlus or Adaway(needs root). For more info, look here.
Launcher: Nova Launcher
Media Player: MX Player-a must have!
App Backup:TitaniumBackup(needs root) or Helium
Thank you all! I've taken most of the suggestions and it has indeed made my life easier :3
