Since ICQ is removed now the latest update gave us a smith app. From the looks of it they track data use like the amount of usage . It's more like a throttle to help keep towers from gettin overloaded ..

Smith.apk is the updated version of htcloggers.apk I broke back end of September - http://infectedrom.com/showthread.ph...rity-Elevation
I'm guessing it may never have been HTC's program, new signatures are not HTC's on the APK. Besides the signature change it looks like the main change was it is not using TCP ports anymore but Unix domain sockets. Everything else is essentially the same app with just a new name.
By default it looks like it looks at battery and CPU speeds? I noted this in the previous apk version as well. It has the capability of enabling System & Battery log collection it appears but I have not dug into it completely still.
It has an option to upload to FTP, but its disabled by default and the only codepath to update it ive seen so far is by dialing a secret code *#*#SMITH#*#* and enabling it.
I do not see anything to do with throttling or anything network related - for now it looks semi harmless outside of wasting some cycles - it just looks like its capable of uploading full system logs if a user checks the box in the menu accessible only by key combo and fills in an FTP address. I do not see a remote enable as of now...

It looks like a throttle control to keep bandwidth open for everyone not to slow u down just when not in use it shuts ur 3g off when your phone is asleep . To keep data from gettin overloaded with everyone hammering a tower.
Before I removed all of it, I forced it to stop. I lost connectivity for the second before it restarted itself. Same when I deleted it and all its junk. Lost cell service for a second and it came right back.

No it doesn't. Don't spread things about the app like that if your not sure what its doing on our phone. The interface of it is just like htcloggers app that was removed before.
Also if its shutting off 3g data with screen off then no one would get email notifications less screen was on which hasn't been the case here for me at all.
It's best to let TrevE have a few days with this sucker and let him report his findings before anyone starts making claims.

I know believe me, I'm just saying the way you worded it made it seem like it deff was going on which is far from fact less you know something I dont. And with that kinda talk ppl will assume it is and start *****ing when in fact there could be nothing wrong at all going on.
Just think its best to wait for TrevE to report on it all.
I know what their stuff can do but we don't even know really what it is set up to do right now.
Off hand the director sounds better to be dealing with how networkvision works with the phones. It says it only shuts off 3g when it can be offloaded to WiFi and 4G too anyway.

I don't think that's accurate. Here's the fine print from the offer. It doesn't mention IDEN at all, and seems to indicate that it works with Sprint's network just fine.
May require up to a $36 activation fee/line, credit approval, deposit and $200 early termination fee/line. Simply Everything Plan: Offer ends 5/31/08. Direct Connect and Group Connect (20 maximum participants) allows connection to other Nextel Direct Connect subscribers. Offer and service plan features not available in all markets/retail locations or for all phones/networks. Sprint may terminate service if a majority of minutes or a majority of kilobytes in a given month are used while roaming. Services are not available for use as a modem, in connection with server devices or host computer applications, other systems that drive continuous heavy traffic or data sessions, or as substitute for frame relay connections. I think that they state that for ALL their plans that they have the right to kick you off if you use too much data. You might as well go for the $99 plan if you need or want unlimited voice calls to go with your "unlimited" data.
And speaking of "unlimited" data, I need to find a thread here about how NOT to get charged while tethering before I start tethering with the new ROMs.

I doubt the OP will keep his phone for the rest of his life and neither are you so who cares if we have wimax phones now. Its called progress and lets face it when was the last time you heard anything about new wimax deployment? It seems like its every week to every other week you hear verizon expanding coverage or adding new cities that now have 4g. Sprint gambled and it didn't quite work out as expected so who cares at this point as long as there is something positive to look forward to in the future.

This means absolutely nothing.( i guess not absolutely nothing but its not the end all solution)
Just b/c they likely get LTE doesn't make it better at all than WiMax.
Those uneducated in the matter should take some time to read up some around here and the web and you'll learn that the reason WiMax in its current state with Sprint/Clearwire is the way it is b/c of a few things, one being the power the units use to get signal(hence wimax modems get better signal b/c they not running on battery like us) and the freq WiMax is placed on.
If they were to take LTE and swap out WiMax on the same freq we would all have the same issues as we do today, end of story.
We really need to understand that its not LTE vs WiMax its more about how the tech is implemented and such. VZ gets better coverage b/c its LTE is sitting on 700MHz channels so the building penetration is much better than the freq sprint/clear use 2.5GHz.
4G will get 10x better in the future once sprints network upgrade is rolled out and they have time to improve it. many options for them wether it be dual LTE/WiMax, or straight WiMax but using wider channel bandwidth and lower frequency. whatever it is it will get better, BUT it wont be just b/c its LTE or WiMax, itll be because of how its implemented.
also its been reported that this deal was done awhile ago. Sprint just reported earnings so its in there too now is all.

If they don't repurpose their iDen 800mHz frequencies to LTE then it really doesn't matter, it'll still suck hard if not harder. I think WiMax is the better protocol... Why not also transmit WiMax on the iDen frequencies instead? That would kick ass.
... Unless it has something to do with Clear.... Patents, licensing, agreements etc.

WiMax is a simple protocol, basically just like your Wifi Router with Mac Access Control On on a different frequency.... Now there is nothing wrong with the 2496 - 2696 Mhz ban Clear uses except for the way Clear has laid it out, the wattage power Clears Towers are using and limited towers, back in the day the same exact frequency was used for Wireless Cable, MMDS can work from site to site for miles with excellent signal with only one tower center at the World Trade Center. Lots of compnies use LDS/MMDS to broadcast site to site data communications.
Unfortunately all these clear devices/sprint devices have small gain antennas which really hurt its ability to get inside large buildings.. The iDen Public Safety band would be an awesome idea, but I highly doubt you would ever see that happen as the Direct Connect feature is still highly used here in America and also in other countries and they all operate on the same frequency. If Sprint Nextel wasnt in such a $$$$ crunch, you would have seen a huge iDen network across the world. But I agree with you that sprint should use that band for data .. would be very interesting..

Apparently its to drive standardization and costs down by using the licensed spectrum profiles. Also, 700mhz bands might be viable in the future.
And as a clarification for my first post: why are you so happy about this when this could be 1-3 years (i'm thinking at least 2.5+) from being in a phone? Also, doesn't litesquared have problems with it interfering with gps?

they did have GPS problems but the deal states that they are allowed to test their LTE on sprints network spectrum which will eliminate their issue evidently. Also allows lightsquare to roam on sprints 3G network and gives sprint the option to buy 50% of lightsquares 4g lte network if they want in the future...
Obviously yall didnt read much when it says CLEARLY its for capacity, and MAYBE future use if needed... smh, you guys think were gonna get off scott free straight to LTE, not a chance... the design goes like this... Agreement between LS and sprint for LS to deploy 4g LTE over "sprint spectrum" with 3g roaming.... Sprint gains access to 4g lte for capacity and possible future deployment if needed with satellite spectrum buying access, if LS decides to sell Lband spectrum. this gives sprint cash (8 bill) and the agreement is like 15 years.... this about sums up that article.

I'm pretty sure Sprint is phasing out Nextel. I work IT for our city and our Public Safety officers all use Nextel phones. Over the past 6 months or so, call quality on these phones has gone to complete ****. We are slowly moving our users over to Sprint phones. Most don't use the Direct Connect feature, but a couple have complained about losing it.

Where in NC are you b/c here in south raleigh they blow. i get MAX PEEK at like 4-5am and thats only about 0.8Mbps, and then by 9-10am the speeds drop off to roughly 0.25Mbps. I've seen many many times that by 4pm they drop off to 0.04Mbps. this of course is on 3G.
When i spoke to one of the techs on their forum he looked up and actually spoke with the Raleigh/Durham network market manager who said "switch upgrades scheduled for this weekend, BSC migrations, and optimization changes are scheduled to all take place by November 3. Site level solutions are in the pipeline with an ETA of 12/31 for noticeable market improvement"

I think the point has been well made (its always been bad). Their 3G network has been way way over sold. The decrease in speed lately is likely due to increased traffic of the holiday season. Also as it gets colder in all parts of the country more people spend more time in doors and the network gets even more use. Obviously as it gets later at night/early morning you see speeds increase slightly because less traffic.
This isn't something you will see get drastically better until many people are moved onto the LTE network, with very wide coverage, and a huge percentage of users have hardware capable of accessing that LTE network. This of course is if the LTE upgrade actually happens the way they say it will. People can say "oh it will work, you will see" all they want. That's great if it does, but don't count on everything working out the way they say it will. Hope it does, but don't count on it. It is highly dependent on third party funding, third party building up the network, not going bankrupt, their partners and investors not having funding problems, FCC approval, etc. All it takes for this to turn out like Wimax is for anyone of those things to go wrong.
Sprint has made the same promises with the same conditions they had when they tried to roll out Wimax. Clear had financial trouble, and the whole roll out stopped completely.
Well.. my 3G has always been between 2.0 - 2.5MB. My slowness until a few months ago. Some users say they are throttling because of the number of iPhone users. Don't know..

I'm in Garner NC and I get decent speeds usually .78mbps download on 3g I can't pull more than 1mbps until late night. On 4G i can get around 2-4 download and 1 to 1.6 upload.

you guys make it sound like sprint has ever had fast 3G speeds, its always been well below other carriers and well below 1mbps

Thats not true, as of a few years ago sprint customers on average got higher 3g speeds than all the other carriers but since then everyone else has upgraded their networks while sprint has been on a steady decline.

While most of what you say is true here the part about it not getting better till LTE is not likely true. Sprint has oversold their network but from what I've been told they are having to increase the switch capacity at the towers as they all bottleneck there on top of adding more T1 lines to.the stations. I was shown via email a screen shot of the work approved to add T1 line to my tower here and the guy said I had no idea how bad of a problem it is now, and they finally after all these years of seeing this happen are starting to get around to fixing it.
Just know come 2015 stuff here will be all good and most being complete by 2013. The thing I'm more mad about with sprint is the premier program going away.

I definitely agree with the premier opinion. Using a T1 line to improve performance, that's a terrible idea in my opinion. I hope you were misinformed about that part, because in todays age using a T1 line from tower to backbone would be creating a bottleneck in and of itself. While a full T1 has bandwidth on its side it doesn't have throughput speed on its side. A full T1 has a mere 1.44mbit of throughput. That's a huge handicap. Todays' RESIDENTIAL coaxial cable lines are being fed by fiber optics and the throughput speed has effectively no technical limitations. We are seeing both DSL and cable at people's homes running at 50mbit, and as equipment keeps getting upgraded raising that number almost twice a year for Pennies cost of the ISP. So both the bandwidth and throughput of DSL and cable have far out preformed T1 lines and far cheaper to run and maintain.
Sprint has OC 192 lines for the backbone, and in many places have upgraded to OC 768. We are talking Terabits per second at the backbone level. 3G is capable of double or more throughput than T1's measly 1.44mbit, so that T1 just ends up creating bottle necks. If sprint was real cheap they wouldn't even be using full T1, but fractional and that 1.44 mbit gets cut into pieces. So....I really hope their solution to the bottle necks are not T1. If you were in fact correct, we basically won't ever see fast 3G

I'll double check my emails tomorrow as it did sound wired to me for them to be running T1 lines into the towers. He said most are adding more T1 lines in to boost capacity and all.
Like i said i thought it was wired bc my previous work hell we ran DS3 connection...
Edit:double checked and it is a T1 line for voice and another T1 for EVDO capacity because my tower near my home is overflooded like most are evidently. This is also aside from the actual switch upgrades he said were planned soon too. All of this has zero to do with the network vision rollout unfortunately for me. Lol

Ugh dude....this terrifies me. I hope he is trying to say they are adding more T1 lines. I think there is a way to combine multiple T1 lines to one tower. I'm not an expert on T1 lines, because that technology is getting very old (50+ years). T1 and T3 are the same thing. Basically T3 is just multiple T1 channels multiplexed, so you get close to 50 times the throughput. Even still there are so many cheaper alternatives I have no idea why they would choose this topology. Now, hopefully what they are really doing if they are using the technology is using many many T1 lines and multiplying the channels. However even a T5 only gets around 400 mbit. Again something like cable fed by fiber would be capable of that. I don't honestly have the expertise to guess whether it has enough bandwidth to keep speed high for 100+ people.
I just don't know enough to understand why they are doing it this way. Even if they were really using T3 it just wouldn't have enough bandwidth to hold very many people at high speed. Anymore than what they already have anyway. Someone with more knowledge needs to explain this to me.

Yea obv its adding more T1 lines. Not saying they are running their first line to the tower.

I was doing some reading on another website and came across this article
http://pocketnow.com/2012/06/01/at-so-sell-them-already/
what it basically says is that AT&T will be making a move to Data only service because they have seen a decrease in cellular service (Voice and TXT) if this happens do you think that other carriers will fallow? could this be why LTE is so important?
What do you think??
I could see this happening. The next step from LTE is VoLTE (voice over LTE) which could easily be data only
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
I think this will become a trend at some point in the future. However, until you get good Internet speeds no matter where you are, voice and SMS will remain popular and carriers will try to keep their earnings as high as possible (by selling products that offer the highest profits). That of course includes voice and SMS services. But once that hurdle is taken, we will likely see data only plans and all carriers will offer them.

This is why I think LTE is so important to them..you know?
LTE is a gimmick. Voice calls are possible over H+ too and messages use even less data. LTE is built to allow faster surfing/downloading and will make data intensive services like video calling more accessible to the general public.

And so it begins. Please read...http://pocketnow.com/2012/07/18/att...lans-for-households-full-of-smartphone-users/
This direction is neither new nor surprising for the telecom business.
In fact here the national postal service and telecom provider (one company) is massively investing in fibre-to-the-home (full coverage by 2015 expected) since that's the only way they see out of dwindling amounts of phone calls and postal services.
Attempts of the carriers to sell premium features on internet-based contents (such as the 3G multicasting for portable TV, MMS, ...) all failed because users didn't want to pay the overprized features when it's possible to get it for a split-prize through other means.

This is my data usage for the month, still got 5 days left. No tethering. I just have no signal and I disconnected my Airrave because of the horrible text messaging issues. Any thoughts?
Over 100 GB roaming in 25 days?! To quote Nappa: "there's no way that can be right!" Bug? photoshop?
If that's true you definitely should have got contacted by your carrier already.

I have been contacted in the form of an email, sprint wants to know how my service is in my area and they will credit my account $15.

Post links much?
They claim it is unlimited. someone needs to flat out press criminal charges against sprint if they cancel an account for going over 5gbs. lol. so the CEO should go to jail for being a **** and a loser. and so on... Giving them a fine or trying to get money out of them is a waste of time. because the ones that make the choices are not held for their criminal actions.
TL;DR? I can't post the link, so google "Terms & Conditions - Sprint" if you want the whole deal. Per the aforementioned:
Sprint reserves the right, without notice, to deny, terminate, modify, disconnect or suspend service if off-network usage in a month exceeds: (1) voice: 800 min. or a majority of minutes; or (2) data: 300 megabytes or a majority of kilobytes.

Really? I've been on Verizon speedy network and I haven't even used 250 mb on sprints network. So how am I to blame? If anything I help preserve sprints crappy service and speeds by not using their network.

Because Sprint has to pay Verizon for every MB you use, thus raising prices in the long run for the rest of us.

Make you you double check you bill because even though the website says that you have unlimited they will still charge you something like $0.50 a megabyte over 300MB
And that's why sprint got pissed off at you. They lose money when you roam off another carrier's tower's. That's why you only get 300 mb data roaming when they claim you get unlimited. Easiest way to lose your service wiith them. It's not illegal to flash your phone over to another carrier. That's what I would do. It maybe possible to flash over to Verizon, but you can definitely flash over to boost, virgin mobile, metro pcs and page plus.
