This is horrible news for us owners of the flagship Verizon HTC phone, looks like they are more focused on what is already in the pipeline.
The story is all over if you search for it, I can't post outside links yet because I've been more of a readers here on XDA. I found the story on GigaOm.

I wouldn't say it's horrible news. Just news. Good things come to those who wait.

I wouldn't be too worried.
The first HTC ICS updates are listed as Sensation, Sensation XE, and Sensation XL in late March. Since our phone is essentially a Verizon branded Sensation XE, I'm sure we will have a fully-functional port soon after that update releases.
Here's a link for those who want it

Who cares when we have leaks?
Better than my old thunderbolt which isn't even on the list, that phone imo deserves it more than us

and the official quote from htc's facebook page, if anyone cares
HTC has been working hard to get its Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades ready, and we’re excited to announce that our first round of ICS upgrades will roll out by the end of March for the HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation 4G and HTC Sensation XE, followed soon there after by the HTC Sensation XL.
In addition, we can confirm Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades will be coming later this year to the HTC Rezound, HTC Vivid, HTC Amaze 4G, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G, HTC Incredible S, HTC Desire S and HTC Desire HD. Stay tuned for more updates on Ice Cream Sandwich releases in the coming weeks.

I thought the same thing, hope so.
Guess it isn't "horrible" but it is definitely par for the course as far as Android updates go.
We will no doubt have a working port soon after the XE releases, if not a fully functional one before that with all the leaks!

Incredible S, thats shocking.
From what someone else commented on , the reason the Rezound and those other phones are " later this year " is because of Verizon and the CDMA proprietary stuff. Makes sense I guess, that Verizon has to ruin ICS by trying to bloat it out to the max and it takes them awhile to figure how to piss off the consumers hence the delay
Blame Verizon for ice now? Htc said rezound will get ics very soon in 2012, now it is later this year. Bloatware works with ics or gb, so that is not an excuse for htc to delay this. Later this year probably means later now. I highly doubt we get it anytime before fall.
Rezound should be a priority for them like they said it should not be included with likes of EVO 3d. Hell vivid is a gsm phone and that is even later this year. So the cdma argument is invalid.

How is any of this shocking to anyone? I didn't expect to get the official release until October, anything sooner is gravy.
What blows my mind is that the independent devs have fully-functional ICS ROMs out for the Rezound already. I just flashed the latest CleanROM ICS version yesterday, and it runs without a hiccough, and my Moto XOOM 4G has had ICS for quite a while. Why is it that teams of hobbyists can be so far ahead of the paid developers?

Agreed. Hold low expectations, that way IF it does come early we'll be pleasently surprised.

I'm amazed that people don't seem to understand the complexity of adapting a generic open source OS to a particular device. This isn't something that can be done quickly, especially when you're a company as big as HTC and have millions of phones out there that will be getting new software.

All we are talking about here is rezound. What did htc say? This will be getting ics soon in 2012, now it is later. I didn't expect anything better but hey how hard is it to just keep your word? I mean they literally just said hey "later".

The fact that they're a big company makes it harder? I don't think so. They do have plenty of phones to develop for, but they should have the staff to support it. And they shouldn't have indicated that the Rezound would be getting ICS soon, then turn around and say "later". I bought mine under the assumption that it would be in the first quarter of 2012. Waiting until October is absurd. Nine months in phone years is like 70 human years!!
Like dbutters said, how can a hobbyist clean up the leaked ROM in a matter of a couple of days, but a mulit-million dollar company like HTC can't get it done with dozens of developers? I don't get it. And if they don't have enough developers, then they've got some hiring to do.

But they don't have millions of different models of phones which is what would make a difference. How many actual handsets are out there is irrelevant.
And as a poster above mentioned, the hobbyists have already taken the leak and made it functional, so the paid devs should be able to be close behind taking into consideration that hey have to have all the bugs worked out before a release.
I'm a little disappointed to not have a fully HTC-made version of ICS before then, honestly.
I bet if this phone were marketed like the GNX was, it would be done much more quickly. Not a lot of Rezounds sold = lower priority.
UK HTC Facebook page says ICS will be out by the end of March.

So the road for me and my Evo 3D has been a short one, i've laughed and nearly cried over updates, parts of my phone which don't work (3D) and i've finally had enough of this piece of sh** and i'm off to grab a nice quad core sgs3 because i've also had enough of HTC sh**ting on me, i'd like some new sh** from samsung please.
On top of that I do like the One X
Does anyone have any relevant reason why i shouldn't make the switch to either of these belters? Besides the fact that i'd be running two contracts at the same time? As my evo has still got around 19 months left on it.

First off, don't blame HTC for updates, they already made it. Blame sprint. HTC gave them the ics update months ago.
And I say that you should get the one x. Because on Samsung, touchwiz is nice, but you end up missing sense afterwards.

I see your in London, is that correct? What is the shooter like over there on your network? I would think all this phone really ever needed was a decent 3g network and a dose of ics. I have been switching between myn's 2 roms (gb\ics) and meanrom and i think it still performs very well. If i had to switch i might lean towards samsung based on this article....http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/08/...s-iii-in-the-us-is-giving-samsung-a-backbone/

He's on GSM; you can't blame sprint. HTC is slow to update on all carriers. Lack of updates aren't HTC's only problem though, their other problem is using ridiculously proprietary hardware (so AOSP based roms are basically impossible) and the fact that they lock down their bootloaders and give you a really crappy alternative unlock.
I've moved on to the galaxy nexus, and I'm never going to get another HTC phone again.

Totally disagree. The Evo 3d is not a piece of ****. 3D works fine. HTC is not to blame here. The phone is as good as it was when you bought it. No need to insult it and HTC and the EVO 3d community now. HTC doesn't owe you anything.
There are other phones out there that are faster, bigger screens and so on. You are welcome to move onto anyone one of them. Go for it.

Heres their reply
Thank you for your interest in the 4.0.4 / 4.1 software update. As of now, we do know that 4.0.4 is in the works but we do not have a release date yet. 4.1 we do not have any information regarding this so I am unable to provide the information you requested. Once it is released, it will be automatically delivered to your phone or you will see the details on www.sprint.com. We value your business and appreciate the opportunity to answer your questions. That's probably generic and even if they were about to release it they wouldn't tell us.
That's a copy and paste template for sure.
lol I am now .0001% more informed than I was 30 seconds ago.
I'm just being a smartass btw but yes that's about as generic as it gets. It's pretty safe to say that if you called Sprint 10 times in a row you might get 2 of those times with people that have ACTUAL information.
But if 4.0.4 wasnt in the works. Why in the world would they say it is. I feared that they would skip 4.0.4 and this says otherwise. We already know worst case for jelly bean is Q1 2013. So this will at least tide me over till then. Even if 4.0.4 comes in oct im fine with that.

SMH!!!! Come on dude, everyone knew the evo 3d was going to get ics so it wasn't a matter of if but rather a matter of when. Sprint didn't have to come out and say anything when HTC themselves made it clear from the end of last year/beginning of this year which devices would eventually get updated to ics. So by sprint stating the obvious doesn't add to their credibility one bit. The evo lte is essentially the htc one x, that phone recently got an update so it is more than safe to assume that a similar update will come to the evo lte. Oh and guess what? When HTC officially release jellybean more than likely the international one x will get it first then the us version one x/evo lte will get it after.
I think you guys are missing out on what the OP got here....He got them to say that 4.0.4 is in the works for us which is NEW news!....before it was a debate if we would mess with 4.0.4 or go straight to 4.1, which was a very valid debate given the timeline it could easily of gone either way...
Now we know we will get 4.0.4 before 4.1, which imho is unfortunate as I would rather them not mess with the minor step before 4.1, since 4.1 shouldn't take near as long to get rolled out to us and I would expect it before years end...us getting 4.0.4 before 4.1 kinda hurts that thought...

I understand what the OP is saying, but even though the email is from some random sprint employee doesn't make it new nor does it confirm or deny anything. Hell, I made a post over on s4gru dated about 3 weeks ago that mentioned me being in a sprint corporate store talking to a htc rep about updates being in testing for the evo lte with no exact eta. I took that information with a grain of salt but decided to post about it because it was an actual face to face encounter with an htc rep which I would say has way more credibility than your average sprint rep. If it was a sprint rep telling me the same information I would have never posted anything about it but in either case I could tell that the guy knew what he was talking about versus a copy and pasted email. Again though, let me stress that I do understand what the OP saying but lets be real here, the evo lte/gs3 are their flagship devices so why on earth would they not be continuously updating their software? That's why I said that the email response to the OP was stating the obvious, which it is.

What you fail to get is that typically they will give you a blanket response saying they are always working on OTA updates and such, or say they can't comment at this time on anything...hardly do they say the specific OS update being worked on through email, unless its been announced elsewhere already they were officially...
Yes Sprint reps typically no little to nothing but there are many times you can read between the lines of things and actually get something useful.
What the OP has done is just that. No way would the rep of said they were working on that less it was actually so...they wouldn't get as specific as that one did at least...
Again yes they usually know little but this is a time where they actually provided some useful informaiton there...so please back off the OP as he was just providing information that was given to him and somewhat valuable...now we know we are not going straight to 4.1...thats news. period.

The phone works really well as it is. I think that a lot of people, although some have legitimate arguments, just want the latest software just for the sake of having the latest software. But I would prefer that HTC take its time as opposed to rushing the update and have a Samsung debacle where the update was released then recalled then released again and blah blah blah. Correct me if I'm wrong but the s3 has not gotten 4.0.4 either right? And even if it had so what. I understand what some people are feeling. The geek in me is screaming for jelly b. It will come when it comes, as it is this is still if not the best, one of the best phones ever produced.

I definitely was not disputing what the OP said and I was in no way getting on the OP for anything. He forwarded information that was a response to his inquiry, I am in no way trying to shoot the messenger at all and in no way have I done so. All I am saying is regardless of what the email said since the one x and the evo lte are extremely similar then its safe to assume that if the one x got a recent update to 4.0.4 then the evo lte will more than likely get a similar update as well, I.E. I don't see the evo lte getting jellybean before the one x hence an update to 4.0.4 rather than 4.1, again another safe assumption which is what the rep responded with which is stating the obvious, so therefore nothing really new.

thats a poor assumption b/c Sprint could very well say no need to bother with 4.0.4 and say just work on JB and when 4.1 is ready even if after the OneX then they will take that update...Can't base it solely on another device...
Still don't see why HTC can't push updates like sense 4.1 and things like that and sprint launches the 4.0.4 kind of updates

Source from China local media. They said ONE S&X have eaten Jellybean and other devices with 1G ram would eat Jellybean as well, but HTC did not confirm when we will receive OTA update. The only thing we can do is waiting.......Just like the days we were waiting for ICS......
Just because we meet the technical requirements to get JB doesn't mean we will. Sprint's EOL'ed our phone, and Virgin Mobile has never cared about updates at all. So why then does HTC have any incentive to give us an update?
http://www.htc.com/www/help/android41faq/
But even if we get official update by that time when it will be released many people will probably have a different phone.
But still i hope it won't take as long as it took from GB to ICS.

Here's a quote from the link you posted:
What devices will not get Android 4.1?
We work hard to ensure each of our products has the optimal user experience and therefore some products will remain at their current version of Android. In general, devices with 512MB RAM or less will not be upgraded to Android 4.1. At present, these devices include the HTC One V and the HTC Desire C. As we identify other devices that will not be upgraded, we'll provide updated information.

There are a lot more HTC phones with 512MB or less, but those are the currently marketed models. Although the FAQ doesn't explicitly say so, I'm sure they are only intending to address phones that are still being sold by the carriers, which does not include the Evo 3D, and I doubt they would include the Evo V either.
They did say they will review their products released in 2011, which includes the Evo 3D, so I guess there is still hope but I think we have a better chance if one our devs ports a Sense 4+ Jelly Bean ROM to the Evo 3D/V.
ramjet73
Ok the Evo 3D will not receive jb, why? For the simple fact that our phones are 3d capable,, HTC will not take the time nor the resources to customize jb for 1 individual phone, it makes no financial sense, HTC is losing money. Why would you wait for HTC anyways when jb is already available for the Evo in a custom rom

Only if you want Sense+ and eventually some dev will probably port a JB ROM with that version of Sense from another device to the Evo 3D/V.

Personally I am sick of sense, prefer the clean appearance of cm10 now, but that's what great about android is you can freely change your rom to your personal liking

For the simple fact that our phones are 3d capable,, HTC will not take the time nor the resources to customize jb for 1 individual phone, it makes no financial sense, HTC is losing money. Why would you wait for HTC anyways when jb is already available for the Evo in a custom rom

But compare to the stock rom, custom rom is not stable. Especially some of custom rom can not offer 3D function......
i think we wont get it..b ecause they will also have to create a new version of sense which they wont

Agreed. We wont get an official JB. Sprint EOL'D our phone (strike 1) WiMAX and 3D are dead and limited technologies now (Strikes 2 and 3)
I think their statement that 512mb RAM phones won't get it is telling. I've been running Disarmed Toast, and Anthrax'ed JB for about a month now and RAM usage seems about the same as ICS. I think the ram limit is arbitrary and more a "we won't because they are old and EOL." Its easier for folks to accept a "hardware limitation" than "its old, but can totally run it if we didn't feel it was a waste of resources"
With the "some 2011" line, I'm assuming the ones that sold well and didn't have any unique features.

dont hold your breath guy's. << penalty for stating the obvious <me>
I find it amusing how some people go:
its EOL by Sprint.
and?
what about GSM?
Its true that its a lot of effort for HTC to go through, but they could just stick two fingers up to CDMA and still produce a GSM version
Besides - if they did release one it'll probably get defunked by the carrier anyway. a bit like it took awhile to get ICS out through carriers while GSM was living the high life.
it does annoy me that people rave about one particular phone/carrier when there are other options available. I have no problem with it in the CDMA/GSM dev forums but in the general one its a bit annoying that the whole world centers around that one persons carrier/phone combination
Just because they are financially not stable and are losing people that use their products is the reason they should make an update so they can KEEP people that are still at HTC side so a good word can be said about them, for example when a friend of yours is on the market for a new phone you can easily convince them to choose HTC because of their good reputation with updates. So I still have some hope to get official JB update.

WOW!
At least samsung has made the effort to get JB to S2....
It's no wonder that allot of us are feeling the sting of no JB on the rezound...
Lego
Even worse they got a leak one or twice a month.

I think even worse is the fact the Droid Bionic is suppose to be getting JB. Wow.
It's because the S2 was Samsung's flagship.. The Rezound is HTC's redheaded stepchild on VZW. Simple enough?
Motorola and Samsung are both updating phone over a year older than the Rezound and HTC is wondering why they are losing more and more customers cause instead of updating phones they are making you buy new phones to get the next operating system. I won't be getting the Next HTC phone for Verizon I am hoping the Google/Motorola phone is real cause that is the route I wanna go.

Ya, I really want the HTC one, but I just can't do it after their lack of support for the rezound.
If the one isn't as big as they need it to be,they will move on quickly to another device. They can't afford to support more than one device at a time I don't think.

SII is getting 4.2 as well. Always get Samsung for good support. Even Ace II is getting 4.2. HTC are terrible on support. Samsung or Google Nexus are the best for updates

I remember a time when Samsung really wasn't that good with updates, boy have times changed. I am close to wanting to drop the Rezound for the Maxx HD, just for the better battery life and better update support(at least so it seems), but the screen and size of the Rezound really has me(it's pretty much the only HD screen on a 4.3in device). HTC is really testing our patients I think.
I was just saying this the other day... Joke's on us I guess. Should have just dealt with moto or samsung and not had the best phone out to get updates. HTC makes beautiful phones but I'm kind of sick of sense and no/really slow updates. I don't see why they don't give us sense 4 and jb. If they did I might change my mind. But we don't even have the latest ICS and sense 3.6 or w/e is worse than 3.5 imo lol. I feel basically forced to get a GS4 even if I didn't sort of want one.. At least I know it will be supported for a couple of years or more. Samsung used to have a bad track record too, now HTCs is even worse than Samsungs was.
Support? We don't need no stinkin' support.
We have great dev's here, like Snuzzo, iHWO, shrike, and Neo just to name a few. A development community even a quarter as good as this one would still be far better than any manufacturer support, save Nexus devices for obvious reasons (and even then, if you're tied to a carrier you're screwed for OTA).

I'm not saying our devs aren't great. But if we had jelly bean from HTC imagine how tits everything would be then... And it would have saved everyone a ton of work just to get something to boot. But no... HTC gnf.
Edit: or even a better sense ICS update for that matter, Smh lol
I agree that HTC needs to support its past phones, a Dev community is only as good as leaks or full releases from the company itself. CM is bad ass cause goggle releases the code and the Dev add or take away things that they like. But as far as giving us Jelly bean on the Rezound with everything working would still take help from HTC. As you can see by the stand still in the development section progress stands still without leaks, OTAs and most important the code itself from HTC. Unless having less phones will give them time to concentrate on updating past phones I don't think HTC will update the Rezound any further. I am hoping July will be the month I upgrade to the Xphone if its real but we'll find that in May hopefully

A high end nexus for Verizon would be a dream come true. Even if verizon didn't sell it directly
I have a Rezound and a RAZR. With the 4.1.2 update for the RAZR it only seemed to perform slightly faster then the Rezound with 4.0.3
Even so, I still don't really use the RAZR for much of anything at all(it's just a backup phone).

Don't forget Chad. I wouldn't even have jumped into the game if it hadn't been for his AOSP RIL.
JB + sense4 for my rezound will be my wishlist
since evo LTE and droid DNA will get sense5
Once my upgrade is here - I'm gone off the Rezound! I have a company iPhone 5 and honestly the battery way outperforms all HTC phones I've owned. Here's to hoping the GS4 has great battery!
An HTC rep shared this article because it says what he can't say. I think there's a lot of truth in it. At least the points logic out well to me.
My opinion is Verizon makes decisions about updates based on what is selling best and Sammy is selling like hotcakes, so they are showing all kinds of love to Samsung. Motorola sucks but they are Googles kid, so they get love. HTC killed themselves by spending too much time being quietly brilliant and making 35 different models. If they kept it simple and spent some money on TV ads, it might have been different... Still might, time will tell.

sooo....besides the risk of info being leaked....y doesnt google release the code to Samsung, HTC, ect, have it all tested...and have everything ready to be deployed and THEN announce the new update like Apple?
We get leaks usually though when manufacturers finish their updates... Even those leaks are really slow or never show up. So I'm still blaming manufacturers. Lol
