What should my network mode be on? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I'm running jellybeans build7 and I noticed the network mode was on global, should I put it on LTE/CDMA?

it shouldnt matter i have ran it both ways....however if you flash a rom and have no data try switching to lte/cdma.

Doesn't really matter, by default from Verizon they come in global mode. You can probably guess why.

Just leave it on global. If not when you go to a low signal area it will keep asking to switchto goal

Force 4g radio, ignore edge

Hello,
I am coming from an Inspire 4g phone have been using the Not since its release date. I am having a similar issue with my Note that the Inspire had, but I am unable to work-around the issue the way the Inspire did.
My issue is that while my phone has great cell tower signal, my phone drops into Edge connectivity constantly. Prior to my Note upgrade, my Inspire would do the same thing, but I had a couple of work arounds I could do to lock back into 4G (HSPA+).
A) I could reboot the phone and the overwhelming majority of times it would go back to H+.
B) I could turn the mobile data radio off and then back on and again, the majority of the times, it would go back to H+.
C) The fix I used most often was to go into the phone dialer and dial *#*#4636#*#*. This brings up a back door to the testing screens and I could access the phone information section. In phone information, I could change the preferred network type and I would change from the default WCDMA preferred to either GSM ONLY or WCDMA ONLY depending on the area I was in. This not only work with near 100% success, it also locked the signal into H+ for longer periods of time.
Now that I have my Note, I have the same issue with the phone dropping to Edge service. However, when I try each of the 3 methods above, including *#*#4636#*#*, my phone stays locked into Edge. I can not get it to change.
I called AT&T about the issue and they explained to me that the phone will lock into the stronger signal, so if Edge is stronger, that is what I will get. I told them about my workaround with my Inspire and they could not give an explanation why it worked with that phone. I did talk them into re-sending the network information to my phone while on the call. They sent the information and while I was sitting still with full bars of signal strength, the phone miraculously popped into 4G service. I asked why it would change from Edge to H+ when they sent the network information since I didn't move to affect the signal and they could give me no explanation.
Does anyone have an idea how to make the Note ignore Edge service if H+ is available? If I can't figure this out, the Note is going back and I will stay with my Inspire 4G for now.
Thanks,
Roger
Flash the Rogers modem(I think)..its got RAT access or whatever its called.

(I don't have a Note yet but...) Settings- Wireless and Network- Mobile Network- Network Preferences. Maybe you can force it there. Keep in mind this is an LTE phone, and SIM, so a little different than our Inspires.

As stated, this is not available in stock rom nor TPC Note 2, which I am currently running. However, based on what I remember seeing on other Samsung phones, the *#*#4636#*#* feature I reference is supposed to do the same thing.
Thanks for the replies. Looks like the RAT feature is locked. Using the Rogers Radio seems to fix the problem, but breaks video playback at this time.
I found it an other thread, so I don't take any credit for it as someone else posted it, but I have confirmed it works on my Galaxy Note
*#*#197328640#*#* > debug screen > phone control > network control > band selection
You need to do this after each reboot though as it does not stick.
To work around this I have made a contact and only left out the last * in it, so all you do is use that as a speed dial and you are good to go

2g/3g switch for atrix 4g.

Any one know of a way to force the atrix to stay on 2g. I have tried the switch Widgets, in settings, selecting GSM network, and entering the *#*# stuff. I have 2 of these phones. One rooted and one is not. Neither will work. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

I was gonna suggest that you move to a remote area like Alaska... I see that you've already tried that.
I can get mine to switch in the network settings, but after a while it always goes back. I'd like to know the answer as well.
That was the first one I tried. LOL.
But honestly that's why I want to do this, because 3g network isn't the best here.
I might be as good with carrier pigeons, or better yet eagles.
Thanks for the thought.
What rom are you using?
In CM7 there is an option, but I don't know if its in the stock rom.
Wireless & Networks -> Mobile networks -> Use only 2G
In my experience, you have to have an unlocked and a rooted phone. Using clockwork mod, you have to load a different radio rom. I used N_01.100.00R_gb_retail_22sept2011.zip. But my atrix is on att. I believe att's radio roms are locking us out of the feature to manually switch bands.
Same here at&t atrix using n 0.100.00r
And in alaska

I've tried cm7 and other roms, build prop tweaks, etc... I thought it was the network, but several of my other phones switch over just fine. I have 2 atrix phones, one bootloader unlocked, rooted etc.... the other is factory, brand new. They both do the same.

Flashed this radio, and can now switch band with no problems.....n 0.100.00r
Android services menu (be careful) on froyo and ginger bread stock roms, Dial *#*#4636#*#* Here you will find a setting to change bands. Make sure you note the default (cdma/prl something, something) . The terminology would make you think Verizon (cdma) but that is not what cdma, means in this context, means. However gsm, in this context, does mean 2g. Cdma means "prefer 3g and drop down to 2g".prl means "preferred roaming list" which does not mean roaming, but what are the nearby towers to flip flop between. Anyway, this is all from memory and am hoping this is enough to address you request.
or look under settings (if not running stock), data, and 2g is there, as devs have enabled this in the native user ui.

Yeah l, that's right, but with the original radio, that process didn't work. Thanks for the response.

[Q] Force 3g or disable LTE?

I was wondering if anyone can confirm if there is a way to disable LTE? I just came from the OG Razr and I was able to use the app "Phone Info" to toggle the LTE and CDMA radios. Is this app specific to Moto devices and will it work with the Samsung Radio? Or is there a better way to turn off LTE?
I'm in a non LTE area at work and want a way to keep it from searching for LTE and draining my battery. Thanks!
Edit: I guess my question is, can someone in a LTE area confirm that it is in fact working? Not being in a LTE area, I do not know how to confirm that the radio is being shut off. Thanks!

It should work...I know it didnt play nice on some of the gs3 roms. Try it and report back.
I'm in LTE coverage and I've disabled LTE with the Phone Info app. Worked like a charm.
Yep, use the Phone Info app from the Play Store. Once installed, open it up and select "Device information." Scroll down a bit to a the box labeled "Set preferred network type." In the box, select CDMA auto (PRL). That will turn off the LTE radio.
Each time you reboot your phone, it will reset, so you'll have to go back into the app to change things.

I did this and now my phone will not change back to use 4g, I have tried setting it to Global (that's what it was first) to LTE/CDMA and to LTE only. Anyone know a fix. doesn't matter if you uninstall the app and reboot or even just reboot with the app installed, mine stays stuck.

I can change back and forth without any problems. After changing back, it sometimes takes a little bit for the 4G to pick back up. Are you trying to change it back in the phone's settings or through the Phone Info app?
You really dont need phone info. This phone you can change between lte and cdma. Go to settings *more settings and then mobile network. You can change between both there. If I remember correctly you can even put it in global.

Same problem. I turn off 4G with the Phone Info app but the only way to turn it back on is in Android Settings and not the phone info app.

Not true anymore. You can't switch it CDMA in the phone's stock settings . Verizon stopped having this option in the settings for any LTE device around the time that the ICS update went out for the RAZR and RAZR MAXX in the spring. It's not in the settings for the Galaxy S3, the DNA, or the Note 2. Verizon wants to move people off the 3G network and onto the 4G network. The only options in the stock settings for the Note 2 are Global, LTE/CDMA, and GSM/UMTS.
Since it can't be changed in the stock settings, that's why people are asking how to put the phone into 3G-only mode. There's a menu that can be accessed through the dialer, but an app like Phone Info makes things a little easier.
Yea, this option works great. I know each one is different, but with mine I had to go into the settings to get it to move back to LTE. Now that I am sure I can get LTE back then I will have qualms about using this. Thanks to the OP for this. Great IDEA!
I've always had luck setting it to "3G Only" in Phone Info, but have found you have to switch back to LTE in the actual Phone Menu.
I'm just disappointed this phone won't do "LTE Only". Was really hoping it would.

If you put the phone into LTE-only mode, you wouldn't be able to make or receive phone calls and texts. You'd only have data (and only when in LTE areas).

The phone info app only changes the data mode. Even on phones with LTE only, you always are able to make calls and receive texts.

Not true. The Phone Info app changes the entire network connection, not just data. Going into LTE only disables the CDMA radio, which is used for both voice and 3G data. It doesn't separate the two. This is well documented across forums online from people who have tried it. I've also previously tried it on other devices.
On the Note 2, if you select LTE only in the Phone Info app, it doesn't seem to actually put the phone into LTE only mode. If you exit the app and then open it back up, you'll see that it's reverted back to the previous mode (either Global or LTE/CDMA/EvDo). So that would explain still being able to make/receive calls and texts if you tried going into LTE only mode on the Note 2.
But if the phone was truly in LTE only mode, you couldn't make/receive calls or texts.

On this phone you can't choose 3G only by default without an app or other manual commands. Options are for GSM/UMTS, LTE/CDMA, and Global.
Doesn't seem to be turning off the LTE radio
Nonrooted, completely stock.
So, I got phone info, and chose cdma (PRL) only as discussed above.
And, I'm seeing NO improvement in battery life.
Measured anecdotally, over the last several days and from battery monitor widget.
I'm always at approximately 40% by 6pm (after unplugging at 650am) with average usage.
Isn't LTE a power hog? If it's disabled, shouldn't we see a measurable difference in battery life?
Any input greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
F
It does seem to be good at lowering the quality of netflix though so as to save me from running over my data limits.

The LTE versions of the Note 2 are getting battery life that's on par with the international 3G-only version, even when LTE is in use. So I'm not surprised that you're not finding there to really be a difference. Significant strides have been made over the past year that have made LTE much more energy efficient than it has a reputation for being.
The only time that I'd really think anyone would see a major difference is if you're in a fringe LTE area where the phone is constantly jumping back and forth between LTE and 3G. In a situation like that, disabling LTE will probably lead to a noticeable increase in battery life. Outside of that, the battery drain will probably be pretty similar.
Interesting - thanks for the info!
Seems counterintuitive that turning off a radio and denergizing it would seem to have almost nill effect over several hours - especially in light of the article the other day about how VoLTE was such a huge drain (approx 140%) of regular CDMA voice traffic - due to the peculiar nature of CDMA+LTE with simultaneous voice and lte data.
Odd, another data point, on mine, disabling wifi as well seems to have no substantial affect either.
Maybe this is due to the Qualcomm ?gobi? chip? Supposed to be pretty badass iirc.
Hate to necro-bump this thread, but is there a way to do this still? For whatever reason, LTE at my desk at work gets almost zero data while 3g works fine (albeit a little slow). The app mentioned previously doesn't seem to have any way to change settings.

[Q] Global Mode Prompt

So when I switch my phone to 3G Only or LTE/4G, basically anything other than global mode and lose signal like in the NYC subway it constantly pops up asking if I want to switch to global mode. This is probably the most annoying thing about this phone. Anyone know of a way to prevent the prompting?
global mode

nope, it seems like the phone still searches for a GSM signal or wifi even you have options selected which would otherwise make you think those radios are off. can get annoying but I must say with all those radios on in this phone i am surprised at how it still has amazing battery life.

LTE issues

Hey guys,
I've noticed that I haven't seen 4G on my phone in forever. I get at best 3G and at worst 1X (surprisingly often). At present I'm in the middle of midtown Manhattan, somewhere that should definitely have solid 4G coverage but all I get is full bars of 3G. I don't think I've seen my phone connect to 4G in weeks. I'm thinking the problem is on my end.
My phone is:
- unlocked bootloader
- cwm recovery
- rooted (latest viperDNA ROM)
- s-off
First thing I'm going to do is flash the latest radios (which I can do in recovery because of s-off right?)
I'm just wondering if anyone else had noticed similar 4G issues, or if it could be because I've blocked the OTA update? Surely VZW does have the largest city in America blanketed and it's my phone that's not connecting.

You may want to go to the "Phone Info" screen and make sure you have the right network selected, maybe set to LTE only and see if you get anythink like 1 bar and the 4G icon. LTE, CDMA should actually get you some signal, and LTE+CDMA auto + EvDo is the full Vzw automatic network

Can you explain this a little better? Looking around I've only found the ability to set the network preference to "Global" "LTE/CDMA" or "GSM / UMTS". The Quick Settings toggles in ViperDNA let me toggle between CDMA only, or CDMA/LTE. I can't seem to find a way to turn off only CDMA.

Right, in the bootloader, that's what I meant.
Edit: I was trying to figure out the "LTE only" mode, and in doing so, toggled the other modes noted above, and airplane mode a few times. Now I see glorious 4G again! Finally. Still going to upgrade the radios, but it's nice to see that familiar icon again in my task bar.
Edit2: So since yesterday I've pretty much only had LTE (and the speed tests confirm it). Literally everywhere I get 3-5 bars of LTE signal. I don't know what changed, but I'm certainly much happier!
