I have a 2 year contract with verizon ending in march that consists of free nights and weekends, 450 anytime minutes, 2gigs data blah blah blah... Last months bill shows I went over my anytime minutes by 450+ minutes. Wierd, I dont remember using my phone so much. But I shrugged it off; giving it the benifit of a doubt. Tonight my cycle started over. It is only 1:39 am and already I have used 16 anytime minutes. But I have made NO calls. And even if I did, I have free nights and weekends. This should not be possible. My call log shos nothing except a call made at 4:30ish pm earlier yesterday. Im gonna call verizon tomorrow, I dont understand wtf is going on with this. Has this happened to anyone else?

Something similar happened to me a while back. It was when I had my Gnex. What is was is that I went over my minutes usage for the first time since I've been with Verizon, so I emailed and asked them for curtousy minutes. They gave me 150 courtesy minutes but I somehow managed to go over them too. But once I checked my call details online, I noticed some calls that were in there that were not in my call log and I did not place and they were 30+ minute calls. I called Verizon and they didn't address the problem at all. She was more concerned about the "insane" amount of minutes we went over. We ended up having to pay for a larger phone minute plan that month, but we had no answer to the mysterious phone calls but they stopped after that..

Vzw had this issue about a year ago on a lot of plans. The phone bills were showing long calls to the operator and charging minutes. Very rarely was customer service actually willing to do anything about the billing. It was clear there was an issue and they were in no hurry to make adjustments. Hope you had better luck the most of the customers I tried to help!

This is too odd.....my issue isn't minutes but data. Here's the deal...
I just got my spouse a S4 on Monday, rooted, blah-blah, and once the set-up was completed, I put that sucker on our WiFi. Spouse hasn't left the house Tuesday at all....but for some reason the S4 racked up 450MB of data usage, but it's connected to our WiFi. When the spouse had the S3, this never happened. I checked this morning when we had our morning coffee,m and an additional 100MB of data usage OVERNIGHT while both of us were sleeping...I have NO clue why this is happening. I wonder if it's due to the Rom, but I didn't see anything posted about Data Usages...but if it continues, I'm reverting that bad boy to stock and taking it back to exchange it, in case there's something wrong with the WiFi radio, but it still doesn't make sense.....I use WAY more data on my Note2 (usually), but I've been surpassed by the Spouse's S4 so far this week.
I wonder if maybe the WiFi connection keeps dropping and 3G or 4G is picking up the slack. May want to ask on the S4 forum also, maybe they may know what's up if it's not the WiFi dropping.

I'm having that issue with one of the phones on our account as well. The phone in question has a 4 GB plan, the rest of us have unlimited, and is connected almost constantly to our WiFi but yet each month it shows 2 GB of data used to the MB. It has been 2 GB for the past 6 months while the rest of our phones show the correct usage, which is rounded off but is different every month. I am going to try and find an app that keeps up with how much data is used on both WiFi and 4G so I can prove that they are doing something fishy, there is no way that phone uses that much data per month and no way it would be 2,048 MB every single month for the past 6 months.

Are your settings under WiFi set to never sleep? Otherwise when your screen shuts off it switches to your mobile data. Also are you receiving MMS messages? They require either 3g or 4g data to come through.

I would make sure backup assistant plus isn't enabled... I have seen a ton of customers (work at a verizon retailer) come in with unexplained data usage... backup assistant plus was uploading pictures over cellular data to the vzw cloud... and during the s4 setup screens, they have made it enabled by defualt and most people skip right over it, not disabling it.

Both phones are rooted and the VZW BU is the first thing I remove. Oddly enough, it STOPPED. It went crazy the first few days, but now we're back to normal, with the Spouses phone barely sipping any data and me using the largest chunk (how it's always been). Maybe there was just a glitch last week, maybe my WiFi router at home was hiccupping, don't know, just happy it's back to the way it's supposed to be. I made sure that both phones remain on WiFi when at home, and that WiFi doesn't turn off in Sleep mode.

Warning to all Sprint users!
I was using my motorola Photon while roaming on CDMA domestically, which I have done before, when all of a sudden a popup appeared. This wasn't the normal, "beware of possible data charges, continue?" This popup said something like: "You are roaming domestically off of Sprint's wireless network, to continue you must agree to pay the roaming charges"
You are given the choice to agree or cancel and not be able to use data. I have gotten out of it by pressing the home button but it keeps coming back while I'm roaming.
Did sprint change their policy? If so let me know so I can cancel for free, this isn't going to fly.
Hello,
With the Simply Everything Plan, Domestic Roaming is free. The Warning is just a boilerplate warning as not everyone is on the Plan and the Photon does not know which Plan you are on. If on the Simply Everything Plan, just turn off the Warning.
Cheers,
JJ
As an ex-Sprint employee I know this, but this popup was different than the one I normally receive on the Photon and specifically said Sprint. It also said I WILL be charged.
So instead of assuming, did you call sprint to verify?
Sent from my MoPho using XDA Premium.
I have called about this before and was told I can use up to 300mb of data while roaming, anything after that I would get charged.

I was told the same thing when I signed up for Sprint Service earlier today... I spend a day or so in a fringe area that roams 3G on Verizon, and was told if I go over 300 MB data, or half of my voice minutes on another domestic network, that I could get charged, or booted off.

As a current Sprint employee, I can say roaming is free for both voice and data. Every smartphone I carry at my location has that "generic" warning message. I've been answering that question for over 4 years now. One thing to note though, Sprint does has excessive usage where they can terminate your contract at will. I believe there was bond XDAer who accumulated something like 93GB in a 3 month time period and politely asked to leave Sprint. If you have further questions, call 1-877-775-4886 instead of *2 or 1-800-SPRINT1.

300mb or a majority of data use. If you use 2gb in a month and you roam at or under 1gb for said month then you will not be charged. This us covered in the TOS and can be found verbatim on their website.
Just saying.

Some people just dont really read anymore, nor have common sense, I mean really, you think any carrier would happily let you roam constantly??? If your phone gets a bad signal, call them and (politely) talk to them and see what they can do, if that doesn't solve the issue, go for an airvana, doesn't cost you a dime, if your still not happy, cancel your contract, sprint didn't force you to sign the dotted line, you made that decision....done with my rant for the night

Yes but sense we are all used to roaming constantly, due to Sprint's limited network, and it has always been free. And as you see from a current employee above; we are still being told it is free, it is just ridiculous.
Anyway, not here to ***** about Sprint, just warning those who torrent all the time.

Voice roaming is free, data you get 300mb before you receive any charges. The pop up is phone oriented it is just the data roaming guard i just turn it off.

It is not the phone roaming guard, this one was different than the usually roaming guard. Plus I had the guard off.
I've never seen anything like that and as others have said, I've heard roaming is unlimited and free from Sprint reps. Maybe OP is in a test market for a new crack down on it. *shrug*

Once again, the spreading of more mis-information...
Since no one takes the time to read the Data roaming agreement portion of your subscriber agreement I'll quote it for you all so that you may all 'know it all' ... In case anyone cares to read it, you can find the entire agreement here
Off-network Roaming: The primary use of your Device must be for domestic purposes within the Sprint-owned network. Domestic means use in the 50 United States and U.S. Territories (except Guam). Sprint reserves the right, without notice, to deny, terminate, modify, disconnect or suspend service if off-network usage in a month exceeds: (1) voice: 800 min. or a majority of minutes; or (2) data: 300 megabytes or a majority of kilobytes...

So, if you use a total of 2gigs in a month and you use 1gig or less while roaming, they won't care because you are still under the 'majority of kilobytes' clause.. therefore, no charges, no pissy letters, no phone call... nada.
In fact, I'll post up a screenshot where my wife and I consumed roaming data like you wouldn't believe and they didn't care.
On a side note.. if anyone uses their cellular data connection for downloading torrents they are an idiot... my data consumption was streaming internet radio while force roaming just to test the 'majority of kilobytes' theory.. they didn't give a ****...
proof is in the pic... now can we please stop beating this horse ?

That's EXACTLY why that Guy with 93Gb in a month got the boot!! For the life of me, I cannot understand why anyone would use a phone to download torrents, just can't. And if you READ the contract, (I did down to the fine print), unlimited data has limitations. Torrents were not specifically mentioned, but using Photon as a Server is, and I assume this falls under that.

Glad they booted him.. it's that kinda **** that makes carriers switch to capped or tiered data.. that **** only hurts us all in the long run if it continues..
I stream internet radio while at work all day. Mine is 'normal' usage.. not for torrents and crap.. anyhow.. I just wanted to point out that it's not a fixed 300mb 'cap'... it's 300mb OR a majority of data.... funny how ppl just can't read.
FFS if you are that guy torrenting/hotspotting all your ****, you're an asshole.
There was a guy on reddit a month or two ago complaining that Sprint terminated his unlimited data plan. Come to find out, his previous month's data usage exceeded 100gb because he was using his wifi hotspot (from rooting) for all his internet purposes.
Don't be that guy. Don't be the reason we can't have nice things.

I ditched my home internet and I use my photon as my only ISP. It provides internet for my laptop, desktop, and any other internet connected device in my life. And I have never even come close to 100gb. The highest month I have had since I have been doing this was 12gb.
That guy must have not only been using it for all his internet traffic, but he must have had a ton of traffic too.
I got my EVO LTE Saturday and it has been working fine - minus the wonky wifi signal issues. Until last night when I started receiving voicemails, but no missed calls or calls at all. Texting works fine and so do outgoing calls. Anyone else had similar issues?

How are your 3G speeds? I think you might be having some of the same issues as here

The biggest issue is definitely the inability to receive calls and I'm not seeing too many other people complaining about that. I've only seen one other person and I think his solution was to just get a new phone.
Thanks, though.

I've missed calls. That other thread I linked there's at least one person that mentioned not getting calls and I just read the thread "Lasted one day" and there were a few in there that mentioned not receiving calls at times. It's all the same issue, it seems the 3G radio and/or antennas on this phone has issues.
Same thing is been happening lately! Well at least today. Missed about 3 calls with the phone right next to me and text message appears with a new VM. The phone did not ring at all. Then I have been noticing " Roaming Notices" as well.
My speeds sometimes are 68mps. but sometimes as little a 0.10 mps
I am in northern Cincinnati.
This is probably the best speed so far

Also having issues and have been reading about it since I got the phone.. Nothing has fixed it.
I don't realize I have the issue until I try to send a text message and get an error, then I restart the radios and will receive a couple texts and the message will send.
Hopefully there's a solution soon.
I've had mine for two days now and not been able to receive any calls. Spent time with CSR and they felt it was a faulty phone. Same deal with my wife...we both picked up EVO lte's on they same day. We were thinking how unlikely we had two faulty phones. Either way we swapped both out for two new phones today....still same problem. Neither of us can receive calls. That means we've been through 4 phones now with no luck. I can text and call out albeit with less signal then my og EVO without too much trouble. I do notice less signal than my og EVO but at least outgoing works.
A few hours ago I stumbled on to the fact that if I am on the phone (call out first) that I can receive a call waiting call. This seems to work consistently. Not sure why. I'm hoping to find out soon if it faulty design (poor antenna, bad radio, etc) soon. If it turns out to be the case, I want to be sure to be able to return in my 14 day window. I'm starting to lose faith in this phone.
For some reason I doubt it's the radios. The firmware seems to be a bit screwy. It's not locking onto towers correctly.
Gavia, have you tried updating PRLs and then receiving a call?
Yes I've update all of the phones prl. Still no luck. I do agree there is an issue locking on to towers...I see my signal bounce from 3 bars to roaming to 2 bars to no signal.
I tried to exchange mine at Sprint today, the rep declined doing it without the techs looking at it, the problem is it's only a sporadic issue. I told him that I was within 14 days and I can get a replacement, he said that I can CHANGE my phone for a different one but not swap it without a rep deeming it defective. I could have left the phone with the rep for 2 hours but the thing is the issue only happens at random times and not all calls fail (for me) it's really frustrating me.
I actually came in to ask about missed calls I looked down and saw I had a missed call phone was sitting still I was right beside it. It never rang. Hope thus is an easy fix

I had this problem right after purchasing the phone. I was placing calls just fine so I didn't realize I couldn't receive calls until about a day and a half later. Over the course of that day and a half, I had about four voicemails but I thought I had just received them when the phone was sitting on the table or was turned off for a meeting. Anyway, long story short, I tried all of the user-side updates and nothing worked. I then called Sprint and they fixed the problem. I've been receiving calls just fine ever since.
I'm also having incoming call issues, both on my LTE and my girlfriend's. The first time I try to call it doesn't ring through but on the second or third attempt it succeeds. I've gotten calls from others the first try, but then when I stopped by the doctor's office this morning they said they had been trying to call all week and just kept getting a busy signal.
I stopped by the local Sprint store today and the rep tried to blame it on the tower by my house even though I've had zero issues in the 5 years I've lived here before now.
@patrascu - did the Sprint rep tell you what they did on their end to fix it? And has it stayed fixed?

I've missed a handful of calls which is more than usual.
If you're not getting resolution in the store, call up customer service. Move up the chain. Still no results, select cancel account and when someone picks up, ask for "account services". If you are within your 14 days, and want to exchange, they shouldn't be hassling you like this. In the future, all the more reason to buy from third parties like amazon or BB.

Do you have any idea what they did with your phone? I've spent two hours talking with different people at sprint and none of them have been able to help.
My Evo 3D did this, and this phone does this as well. I've always attributed the "my damn phone wont' even ring" to the fact that the sprint reception near my house and where I work is utter crap. Where the signal is decent I don't have this problem. Maybe I should get an airave at my house :/
Just got off the phone with sprint. The first rep tried some things with my second line. Said she would call back and didn't. I called back after waiting about a half hour and the rep worked on my primary line. Not sure if my primary line is fixed but now when I try to call my second line it tells me I need to dial an area code. Third try and the call went through.
Before I got off the line I was transferred to the floor manager who tried to tell me to go to a store (which I already did and couldn't repeat the problem in 5 minutes and sent me off) to have them repair the phone for $35 or replace it under TEP. She had no clue I was asking about a brand new device under warranty that is 4 days old.
I can't say that I'm happy. Unless I get a call back and make some actual progress I'll probably be exchanging these this weekend.

Yeah.. Call Sprint and ask for an Airave. Tell them exactly what you just said and they will send you one. I have one!
For anyone that doesn't know what an Airave is, Its a mini Sprint Cell Tower that uses your Internet to produce a cell tower like thing. It is FREE from Sprint (however if you cancel your Sprint account and do not return it they will charge you $140).
Long Story shorter the Sprint Airave will use your internet and produce "fake" 3G. It does not produce 4G, it does NOT help your Data speeds what so ever. It will give you full bars. All it does is give you perfect voice quality.
Although if you are in your Airave Cell signal and leave the call will drop. Other then that it is amazing! I love mine.

No one else has a problem with the Airave sending duplicate texts or letting all the calls and text notifications hang for a period of time? That's why I don't even bother plugging mine in anymore
This topic has been talked about quite a bit. There's something wrong with either the software, hardware, or both. These are just a few of the threads I found on the issue but I might have missed some.

As some others have suggested, try and get an Airave. Call (877)775-4886 (Sprint Retentions) and tell them you get no service at home. I have one, it's great for the most part. As for the question someone posted about the random times it text bombs your recipient, it is true. It happens when you send and receive at the same time or send a second before the first has gone through. Other than that annoyance, they're well worth it. Hopefully the phone issue is something that can be fixed and a fix is in the works.

All this is true except for the bolded part. Currently I'm getting around 0.10Mb/sec download speeds with my EVO, connected to my Airave my speeds are around 2.5Mb/sec
If your coverage is really that bad get rid of Sprint..... Trust me that is the best thing to do.... You can try an airave also.... But make sure they give it to you for free....
I really don't think its sprint since I have never had a problem with service. Been with them for 10+ years. Got the phone at Best Buy, think they would swap it out?

I think Best Buy has a 14 or 30 day return policy so they would be able to swap it out for you if you are within the time frame.
I called Sprint about bad signal in my area (both my Evo LTE & Nexus S 4G are having signal problems) and they told me that because I have the new Evo LTE that it should be expected that I will have bad reception until they complete the LTE upgrades in my area (which is rumored to be this fall).
I told them that the signal issue was present on my other phone as well, so they put me on hold to research the problem, said they were going to connect me to a supervisor, and then I was on hold for another 40 minutes before the line disconnected on me.
Guess I'll have to try again later.

I just swapped out my 1 week old LTE at BB this morning and had no problems doing so. If I heard her correctly it is 30 day exchange, 14 day return.
I've been having major issues with SMS, MMS, data drops, and everything else not working correctly.
Basically told BB that I've been troubleshooting it with Sprint for the past week, done reprovisions, profile updates, factory resets and nothing worked (somewhat true to a point) and got swapped to a new LTE.
This new one is running great! The OS seems different than what was on my first LTE (even though it is the same version) and I've had it online now for 5 hours from the time of this post and my signal hasn't dropped, my data is still connected, and messages are coming though very quickly. Even my data speeds are back to what my 3D has that my wife is now pimping.
For me, it seems that I had a defective phone and the new one has fixed my issues (at least for now..)

I had this same issue. Chatted with CSR's etc, all the stuff you listed, nothing fixed it. I could call out - didnt get calls or txts in (texts came once a day or so in a huge properly time stamped group).
After taking it into a repair store - she reinstalled the OS, then reactivated/provisioned it. Been getting 1.5 - 2.5mbs in the evening hours now
I'm sorry but this goes to show any manufacturer can have radio issues and everyone thought Samsung radios were the worst. Now HTC joins the ranks lmao

Im on my second Evo and its no better than the first. Im constantly missing calls, losing data connection, etc. I just called in to Sprint and the stupid CSR tried to tell me it was the service area I was in. Well, Ive been driving all over the place all morning and within a 50 mile radius, Ive missed 3 calls. No notification, phone doesnt even try to ring.. I just get a voicemail notification.
I dont know what to do. I have 7 days left to leave Sprint on this 14 day window. All I want is a phone that works and it seems like everything Sprint has come out with in the last year has sucked.

I have to agree. Its got to be because they just dont do much CDMA stuff. I hear minimal complaints about their GSM devices.
Hello everyone,
I have been a long time Sprint user and enjoyed their unlimited data plan, but lets put it out there, their coverage sucks!! I only receive 4g service about 15% of the time and I know Verizon has the areas I travel blanketed with good 4g coverage. My contract is up and I am thinking of jumping ship to Verizon and this phone. My hesitation is with the data plans, if I have 4g available to me all the time I think I may be using alot more data. I may stream more, tether more, and I'm afraid the bill will go exponential. Not to mention I use my phone as a gps alot and that alone could shoot me through the smaller data plans each month.
My question to you all, is what data plans make sense on this phone, especially if you are sharing it with a second s4. I always put my phone on wifi when I'm home, but when I'm on the road I usually find my phone data speeds much faster than hotel wifis and I will often tether with Sprint. Will this still be possible with a Verizon plan? Which data tier are you guys using each month and how much data do you go through? Should I stick it out with Sprint waiting for their 4g coverage to mature? Any advice would help.

Can you do a usage analysis on Sprint's website? I had an oddball situation where I had unlimited and my wife had some old BS 300 MB plan from the BB days, so we had to move to tiered to get her something decent (we get an employee discount through her, so we do not want to separate plans). I ran the analysis on My Verizon and found that I never even came close to 2 GB anyway, and 4 GB is only another 10 bucks if we feel we need it. I am on wifi most of the time anyway, and I have a separate work phone for work. But both of our cars have navigation systems so we never really use phone navigation (and I have an old Garmin for when I travel), so my needs are quite a bit different.
I came from Sprint, too and I was worried about it. I have 4gb of data per month, but only really use about .5-1gb. The most I ever used was 2gb and that was with viewing a lot of youtube and Netflix. You'll love having the better coverage, and the LTE speeds are unreal compared to Sprints.
Most people are fine with 2gb but it really depends on the person. It sounds like you might want to start out with 4gb though. I am on wifi at home all the time and seem to still go through 1-2gb a month. If I am traveling and tether its easily 3-4gb. I am on unlimited data and don't worry about my usage though and am a heavy user with youtube and video.
I'm sharing 10 gb with the girlfriend. She only uses like 2gb, and 8 is plenty for me.

I have 10GB with my plan but have never even gotten remotely close to using that much.
Even though I stream Google Music and Sirius all the time, per month, I typically use 2 - 4GB.

A lot? Two or less a Netflix movies will kill a 2gb data cap. Ditto for Netflix watching quicker than expected if HD mode. 4G and caps are like oil and water. They do not make a practical mix.

How can you guys stand to watch a whole movie on a phone? I can barely stand it on a tablet...and then is only on a plane where network cap is irrelevant. I will wait every time and watch it at home. Once again I guess us old farts have different usage patterns. Like music...I listen to maybe ten minutes of music per day, max. I am not going to rearrange my life over marginal entertainment.

Hey people I understand sprints network is unlimited etc.... but me and the other person on my line are rooted and we tether he used probably near 15-20gb i used probably about 5 and ever since the 30th of december my 4g connection has been unreliable to the point where i have to turn on 3g to use the internet or it will just hang at loading the website or the app i even did a speedtest with other people that have sprint in my area they easily get over 10mbps while i cant even get 1mbps unless i throw 3g on..... my question is can i do anything about this? we both have sprint note 3s stock rooted i checked the towers in my area all are good! I called sprint they made me do a network reset etc update profile and prl nothing changed! please help
Could be defective but I don't think you're being throttled. Try taking the battery out for a few minutes.

My wife and I are with Sprint as well and we both strongly believe that Sprint throttles 4g LTE at 5 gb download. Every month when I hit 5 gb I can't connect to 4g until the next billing cycle. We are going to see how Spark is this year and if it's as piss poor as the current 4g we are jumping over to AT&T.

Agreed. If you aren't in a roaming area, they shouldn't be throttling you. Make sure that you update your PRL and profile, reboot, then call them. There are a lot of factors, including times of day, towers from which you're pulling, &c. They know this info, so I suggest that have your facts before calling.

No throttling. 5gb isn't anything. I've used close to 100gb with no problems. For years I've easily gone over that 5gb mark. Someone here in another thread used almost 200gb. Just sounds like tower overload. New customers around Christmas time makes sense. Sprint should be able to see that.
Edit: For anyone that wants to see the unthrottled usage lol http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2592679&page=4
I'm having a similar issue. Will have to keep a close eye on it. I thought it was just my phone or the towers acting funny

Ya if data is not fast enough to stream some video in an area with lte coverage I would call and see whats up. Or go take your phone to another of the same model and compare signal strength. You can go into testing settings and make sure both are on same tower and see actual signal dBm.

Yes that is sprint lte at its best I love this phone/service. I cant see me needing spark untill phones have 4k displays and 4k video out. Maybe for really congested/populated cities its needed. wimax never made it here and lte is pretty new for us too, spark is probably years away for me anyways.
